BPMC chief gets first COVID-19 dose in Bukidnon’s vaccine roll out

We are getting it first to show that there is really nothing to fear,” Prantilla said on Monday during the first day of its 3-day actual vaccination. Governor Jose Ma. Zubiri, Jr. in a statement said Dr. Prantilla’s supportive gesture of volunteering to be inoculated in public sets as an example to more than 500 healthcare workers who were scheduled to get the vaccines. “We have seen surveys

reporting that significant percentages of the public were reluctant to take the available vaccines. We hope that this act of our BPMC chief will encourage us to be vaccinated so that we can establish the so-called herd immunity,” the governor said. Provincial Health Officer Dr. Gary Guido Tabios, meanwhile, reported that BPMC has targeted 218 front liners to be inoculated on the first day (March 8), but only 202 got their first shots because records showed there were

13 deferrals and three swift rejections. Tabios added that only one of BPMC’s 202 vaccinated front liners had encountered AEAIE (Adverse Event After Immunization Experience). “The AEAIE that appeared in the form of rashes alleviated quickly after taking anti-histamine,” he said. riers like limited internet connectivity and access to technology, the situation has increased the gaps – socially and economically – between the stakeholders to an unprecedented level. Under such circumstances, as researchers who will be entering the teaching profession very shortly, we constantly find ourselves wondering what kind of teachers we will be. Will we be able to bring in ‘Peace, Dialogue and Justice’ into the classroom or more appropriately into the Zoom – room? How do we talk of justice when major sections of society are affected by the

digital divide, especially in a country like ours where houses don’t get electricity for hours, forget the capacity to access internet services! Education in the time of the pandemic could indeed provide us with an opportunity to build a network of teachers at all levels, which would lay bare the strengths and weaknesses of the respective contexts and allow for a friendly database through which they could receive feedbacks, provide suggestions to others in the network and also ponder over the loopholes in one’s own local set up.

Cebu Pacific CEO Lance Gokongwei leans on valuable lessons from his dad

T WAS sometime in the late 1980s, recalls Cebu Pacific president and CEO Lance Y. Gokongwei, when his late father, John Gokongwei Jr. aka "Big John” first toyed with the idea of starting his own airline. He did not possess any experience in running an airline – yet this did not deter the older Gokongwei, nor did the prospect of going against an established goliath bother him. Besides, it was an upbeat period as the local aviation industry was steadily opening up with the liberalization of air travel. Plus, Big John loved to travel and had a fascination for airplanes as a kid. “He was in the United States at that time and read about a low-cost carrier called Southwest. Singapore Airlines first in the world to pilot IATA’s travel pass app Singapore Airlines (SIA) will be the world’s first airline to pilot the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) Travel Pass mobile application for digital health verification, starting with passengers travelling from Singapore to London from 15 to 28 March 2021. This marks the second phase of SIA’s digital health verification process trials, which is based on the IATA Travel Pass framework. Passengers with mobile phones running on Apple’s iOS operating system will be invited to download the IATA Travel Pass app, and create a digital ID comprising their profile photo and passport information. They can also insert their flight information into the app. Subsequently, they can book their pre-departure Covid-19 test at one of seven participating clinics in Singapore via a dedicated online portal. They can then register at the clinic using the digital ID and flight information in the app. They will be able to view their test results, as well as confirmation status to fly, directly on the app. IATA’s Timatic registry will provide the back-end information on the Covid-19 testing and entry requirements. Participants will need to show their confirmed status

in the app to the check-in staff in Changi Airport before flight departure. In line with current regulatory requirements, they will also need to bring a physical copy of their health certificate that is issued by the clinic where they took their Covid-19 test. By consolidating the verification of health credentials into a single app, participants can expect a faster and more seamless check-in process. Participants will have full control over how their personal information is shared, as the data is stored locally in the mobile phone and not in any central database. This is critical given the highly sensitive nature of health data. If successful, the pilot will pave the way for the integration of the entire digital health verification process into the SingaporeAir mobile app from around mid-2021, again using IATA’s Travel Pass framework. SIA will continue to work closely with its partners in Singapore and around the world in the facilitation of these trials, and towards the eventual restoration of a seamless travel experience for its customers. trials helped to support SIA’s drive towards a secure and convenient industry standard for the verification of Covid-19 test results, and the health status of passengers including their vaccination status, in the future. “That gives us the confidence that in the second phase, we can further streamline the verification process for eventual integration into SIA’s mobile application. This will help to provide a hasslefree digital solution for our customers in the new normal, and help to bring about a more seamless travel experience.” Mr. Nick Careen, IATA’s Senior Vice President Airport, Passenger, Cargo, and Security said: “Our partnership with Singapore Airlines for the first full deployment of the IATA Travel Pass will help get the world flying again. In the immediate term, it is the solution for travellers to safely and securely manage their travel health credentials. Hints and Traces

Not to condemn, but to save

That’s what is said of Christ. “God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” (cfr. Jn 3,17) If we have to be “another Christ” as we should, then we ought to have this attitude also. In all our dealings with others, no matter how contentious, difficult and unfair to us, we should avoid condemning anyone. Ours should simply be the desire to save, for which we should be willing to suffer, as Christ did. Would this not be tantamount to being inhuman to us? Well, not exactly. Such attitude is not against our human nature. But, yes, it transcends our nature, since for us to have and to live it would require some supernatural grace, a real and vital identification with Christ. There is no way we can have this attitude if we would just rely on our human powers. But let’s always remember that our human powers are open and are enabled to be enriched and elevated to the supernatural order of God, since they are not merely physical or material powers. They are spiritual powers, these intelligence and will of

ours, and as such, they have what is called in philosophy as obediential potency or capability to be enriched and elevated to the supernatural order. That is why as our Christian faith tells us, of all the creatures of God, we are the ones together with the angels who are created in God’s image and likeness, meant to share in the very life of God. While all creatures come and belong to God, we as human persons with spiritual faculties, are meant to participate in the very intimate life of God. This can take place because God himself gives us his grace. It’s this grace that actualizes what we are capable of achieving because of our spiritual faculties. That is why we also need to train our spiritual faculties, our intelligence and will, to develop that attitude of Christ of not wanting to condemn anyone. Rather, like Christ and with Christ, we should try our best to do everything to save a person who may be wrong in something or who may have some problems and difficulties. We have to have the same attitude even when it is us who would be

the victim of the wrongdoing of another. For this, we have to train ourselves to have the same charity that Christ had for all of us. In fact, it is the charity that Christ commanded us to live. “A new command I give you,” he said. “Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (Jn 13,34-35) We really need to expand and purify our heart so that it can channel this kind of love Christ commands us to do. While we can legitimately have our biases and preferences, our personal opinions and taste, we should also see to it that we are not trapped by them. We have to learn how to transcend these restricting conditions so we can have a universal heart, a heart like that of Christ. And that is always possible because of our spiritual nature plus God’s grace that is given to us in abundance.

Misbehavior in the classroom disrupts students’ attention and negatively impacts the learning environment. To ensure the best educational experience possible, teachers must master the art of classroom management. Although this is a challenge for certain teachers, with enough practice, you will find there are solutions to misbehavior in even the most difficult students. First is Prevention. Prevention activities are important strategies before misbehavior becomes a serious and major concern. One specific feature of prevention is the strict and impartial implementation of the classroom

behavior rules from which specific behaviors are clearly defined for all the pupils to uphold. Second is to model an appropriate behavior. As a teacher, let us be careful not to send students mixed messages about the behavior we expect from them. If we are impatient, quick to anger and inconsiderate of our students’ feelings, it is unlikely the class will demonstrate the positive behaviors we ask of them. We should set a positive example by showing high levels of patience, organization, courtesy and enthusiasm. If we expect the children to use quiet “inside” voices, we must speak at that

volume as well. Lastly, as a classroom manager, we should monitor our students closely. Students who feel they are in the presence of an alert educator are less likely to misbehave than those who assume they are not being watched. It is recommended that we should constantly circulate throughout the classroom to check on students’ progress and give them quiet suggestions in the event anyone is struggling with their work. This keeps children focused on the task at hand and keeps them from falling victim to distractions that cause misbehavior.

March 3, 2021 was Ms. Janice M. Baldelovar of Don Restituto Central School in Region X for her work in Mathematics education. Honored in the same ceremony was Mr. Don King O. Evangelista of Navotas National Science High School in the NCR for his Science teaching work. They each received a cash prize of P100,000, a trophy, and a plaque of recognition. Spearheaded by the DOST-SEI, the Brightest STAR Award is part of the STAR training program. The award is given to exemplary science and mathematics teachers who have been continuously applying their STAR training in their teaching practice and teaching communities. The citation serves to uplift teachers’ morale cultivate a culture of innovation among teachers. Department of Education officials, Division Superintendents, Principals, School Heads, and STAR trainers from the 16 participating regions also joined in to witness the said awarding ceremony. Briones praised all the finalists, lauding their capacity and flexibility to provide high-quality, accessible, and safe STEM education despite the uncertainties and worries brought on by the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. Balatukan Cluster was chosen as one of the 10 initial Local Convergence Agro-Enterprise Cluster pilot areas by the National Convergence Initiative (NCI). The Mt. The 21-million plant— fully equipped with facilities like a multi-pass rice mill, warehouse power supply, recirculating mechanical batch dryer, five solar dryers and mist polisher—is a DAR project under the Convergence of Value Chain Enhancement for Rural Growth and Empowerment (Project ConVERGE). DAR Secretary John Castriciones who graced the inauguration also distributed P16-million farm machines and equipment to the different farmers organizations of the province. “We have the President who loves the farmers, the agrarian reform beneficiaries, and he has mandated me to distribute the agricultural lands to the farmers as soon as possible. And I, being one of the Secretary of our President believes that the farmers are considered as one of the true heroes of our country,” Castriciones said. Castriciones said President Rodrigo Duterte gave DAR a clear mandate to

deliver all the necessary assistance for the farmers. He disclosed that the President would like to leave a legacy, that this administration helped uplift the economic lives of the people, particularly the farmers of this country. The large-scale dryer and rice milling plant are jointly funded by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the Philippine government as part of Project ConVERGE’s P110-million allocation for the agrarian reform farmers in the municipalities of Veruela, Trento, Bunawan and Sta. Josefa, or what is collectively called as the VETREBUNS cluster known for its rice production, processing and marketing. Local government units in the VETREBUNS cluster allotted 20 percent of the project’s costs as their counterparts. The plant will be operated by the Southern Agusan Seed Producers Cooperative (SASEPCO), which will serve as consolidator of the rice produce from three other agrarian reform beneficiaries’ organizations: Kahugpungan sa Malahutayong Mag-uuma Para sa Ekonomikanhong Kalambuan (KAMMPE), La Fortuna Multi-Purpose Cooperative (LAMUPCO) and Baug CARP Beneficiaries Multi-Purpose Cooperative (BARBMPC). Already, the organized agrarian reform farmer cooperatives have cornered a P16-million rice supply deal with the Department of Social Welfare and Development after winning the competitive government bidding. They were able to secure a certification from the Philippine Government Electronic Procurement System (PHILGEPS) with the technical assistance and capability building training from the DAR Provincial Office in Agusan del Sur. The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology and the D.O. Plaza Memorial Hospital will follow suit in ordering thousands of bags of rice from them. Jamil P. Amatonding Jr., Provincial Agrarian Reform Program Officer II, said the farmers under Project ConVERGE will be liberated from the cudgels of middlemen and unscrupulous traders since they will no longer sell their palay at the lowest farm gate prices and instead become productive rice entrepreneurs.

Maximo Gegato, SASEPCO manager, said 20 of their 200 members stopped planting rice and instead grew bananas because of heavy losses in their harvest last year as a result of declining prices of palay. He said traders pegged the palay prices at P700 to 800 per 50-kilo bag from what used to be P1,000 to P1,400 before the implementation of RTL. But Amatonding assured that the sad plight of the farmers on the bad effects of RTL will be a thing of the past as the VETREBUNS farmers are expected to increase their yield by 30 percent when they will fully benefit from the cost-effective mechanized farming system. Amatonding said the modern farm inputs would boost the production of the rice farms while significantly reducing the expenses incurred, especially during the planting season. Based on the results of their strategic plan with the farmers, Amatonding said expenses will be reduced significantly from what used to be P37,000 per hectare, which drove the farmers further into the quagmire of indebtedness from the traders. He explained that if a farmer yields P74,000 per hectare, with the mechanized inputs that lessen their expenses, a net income will go as high as P45,000 to P50,000 per hectare.
