P 700,000 worth of ‘Shabu’ seized in police buy bust Man-made bat caves needed to house growing population of fruit bats on Samal island DAVAO CITY -- The foundation working for bat conservation hopes to start the construction of a chiroptorium, or a manmade bat cave, this year to decongest the 257-square-foot Monfort Bat Cave, which holds the title as the largest single colony of Geoffroy’s Rousette Fruit Bats in the Guinness Book of World Records, as the population of the mammals continues to surge.

Norma Monfort, founder and president of Monfort Bat Cave and Conservation Foundation, Inc., told 12 journalists on Day 2 of the “Learning Field Visit on World Environment Day and Eagle Week” organized by the Philippine Network of Environmental Journalists in cooperation with Vera Files and Internews Earth Journalism Network, that several bats could no longer find a spot to rest on the walls of the cave’s packed cathedral during daytime as their population increased to 2.5 million at the latest from 1.8 million assessed in 2006.

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY: An alleged courier of illegal drug worth P 700,000 was collared this morning during a buy bust transaction initiated by operatives of the police Regional AntiDrug Enforcement Unit.

The suspect, identified as Mael Tumao, 18, of Baloi, Lanao Del Sur, did not resist arrest when nabbed

by RADEU operatives.

During an initial investigation, the suspect alleged that a certain “Alimoden” asked him to bring the item to a buyer who was to meet him in a food house in Kauswagan, Cagayan De Oro City.

Tumao said that it was the fourth time that he delivered an illegal drug to a buyer in Cagayan De Oro. The first was 200 grams worth P 1.4 million.

Police investigator Sgt. Johnny Rivera said that the operatives recovered about 100 grams of Shabu with an estimated market value of P 700,000 from the suspect during the buy bust See SHABU, page 5

2 DSWD 10 gives aid to Iligan City fire victims Sat-Sun, June 8-9, 2019

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office 10 aided families whose houses were razed off by fire on Wednesday afternoon, May 29 at Purok Matinabangon, Barangay Ubaldo Laya, Iligan City.

As augmentation support to the Local Government Unit of Iligan City, DSWD Field Office 10 provided 195 hygiene kits, 195 kitchen kits, 195 blankets, 195 malong, and 195 mosquito nets and three family food packs for each of the reported 195 families affected.

Field Office 10 Regional Director Mari-Flor DollagaLibang supervised the relief distribution.

As initial response, the LGU has provided food packs and sleeping kits while some private groups gave relief assistance to the fire survivors.

Other offices and national government agencies particularly Department of Trade and Industry, Department of Health, and Office of Senator Bong Goalso responded and supported these families.

The homeless survivors are temporarily staying at the barangay covered court in Purok Matinabangon.

OZAMIZ CITY, Misamis Occidental -- The city government of Ozamiz observed World No Tobacco Day, an annual campaign that raises awareness about the harmful and deadly effects of tobacco use and second-hand smoke exposure, and discourages the use of tobacco in any form.

Government offices advocating anti-smoking habits joined forces in the city’s observance of the 2019 World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) “Take the first steps to quit smoking

today.”

The observances unwrapped through a fun walk and a motorcade which started from Oxrox Park and ended at Ozamiz City Hall Grounds.

SP OKs MOA with DPWH for flood risk mgmt project THE city government and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) with the assistance of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will implement the Flood Risk Management Project of Cagayan de Oro River (FRIMP-CDOR).

This, after the City Council during its regular session Monday presided over by Vice Mayor Raineir Joaquin V. Uy, enacted an ordinance authorizing City Mayor Oscar S. Moreno to enter into and sign the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the parties for the

purpose.

The Power learned that the DPWH is set to implement the P8.549 billion flood risk management project.

However, in the course of the project implementation, it was found that many public and private properties will be directly affected by the right-of-way.

Under the MOA, the DPWH shall transfer initial funds to the city government to cover payment of ROW claims and allocate and transfer additional funds upon exhaustion of the initial fund, whenever necessary, to cover payments of additional ROW claims.

For its part, the city government shall validate the authenticity of the documents, conduct site revalidation/reassessment of affected properties; and process and disburse the payments to respective claimants, among others.

The city shall, likewise, enforce laws or ordinances and ensure that no structure or improvement will be constructed once the project ROW has been cleared.

The assistance of JICA will be on the compensation of the affected 150 informal settler families of the Right-of-Way component of the project.(SP)

35 drug offenders complete reformation program TANGUB CITY, Misamis Occidental -- About 35 reformists received their certificates of completion after the three-month stay at Bahay Silangan Reformatory Center in the city, May 30.

Balay Silangan, a strategy of Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), is intended for drug surrenderers who fall under the pushers’ category. It is mandatory for every local government unit (LGU) to have a reformation center based on the Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB) regulation.

The program aims to reform drug offenders into self-sufficient and law-abiding members of the society.

Of the 35, at least 24 were from Tangub City while 11 from the municipality of Lopez Jaena in Misamis Occidental underwent the reformation program at the center for at least three months. One month will be the mandatory in-house and the rest will be a combination of in-house and livelihood training, among others.

The center is vital since barangays classified as moderately affected have drug pushers in their jurisdiction.

In her message during the graduation ceremony, Mayor-elect Jennifer WeeTan expressed her appreciation to the law enforcers for making the city a drug-free

with zero casualties. She encouraged the reformists to do well with the chance at life granted to them.

“Exhale the past, inhale the future, let’s move forward,” the mayor said.

For his part, Misamis Occidental Governor-elect Philip Tan challenged the reformists to help make the province drug-free as he vowed to work for a drugfree Misamis Occidental with the collaboration of concerned agencies.

She dreamed and dared

THIS year’s valedictorian at the Ateneo de Manila University is Reycel Hyacenth Bendana – daughter of a hard-working jeepney driver who lost his job.

This is her inspiring and heart-warming story as only she can tell it.

“When I was 9 years old, my elementary school sent me to Ateneo de Manila for a science quiz bee competition. Although my teammates and I ended up only in third place, I did not go home feeling miserable.

Instead, I felt a renewed sense of hope. Later that night, I prayed to God and told myself, “One day, I’ll study in Ateneo.”

“One night, though, it dawned on me that I could not. I am from a poor family. My father is the most hardworking man I have ever known, but his income is barely enough to support our family.

“I started a small sarisari store that I tended after school on weekdays from 12 noon to 10 p.m, and on entire weekends. I was eager to make the business flourish: I would buy and carry the groceries myself, even the crates of soft drinks, in the hope of saving up enough in the next six years. But I realized there was no way I could do it. Ateneo was simply beyond the reach of poor people like me.

“Three years later, with rising oil prices, my father and I joined nationwide jeepney strikes, demanding that the government raise the minimum fare. The economic crisis reduced profit for most businesses.

For my family, it meant there

wouldn’t be enough food on our table. It meant promissory notes when enrollment time came.

“We moved to Polangui, a small town in Albay, where the most expensive private school was one of the worst in the region. My parents told me we could afford only public education. Don’t get me wrong. I think highly of public schools, but Polangui had a few of the worst ones.

Most high school students couldn’t read and write properly and could barely do complex math.

I was ambitious. I wanted a bright future and I knew that studying in Polangui could not give me that.

With no practical prospects but a lot of hope, I took the entrance exams in all the private schools I knew outside Polangui.

“Ateneo de Naga, one of the best schools in the region, granted me a full scholarship for high school.

My parents could not believe it at first; how could a poor young girl from the farthest barrio in a small town qualify to be an Atenean? Slowly, my dream of studying in Ateneo de Manila was becoming attainable.

“Even with the full scholarship, however, I still had to be a working student.

My allowance per week was P500; I was living on P85 a day, half of which went to transport costs while the other half was just enough to buy me one meal (lunch) a day. For breakfast and dinner, I would usually eat cookies — one packet, halved. I always felt like fainting.

“I would be in my classes from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.; then, from 6 p.m. until 12 midnight, I’d be at my part-time job, helping my well-off classmates with their assignments. Only after midnight would I have time to accomplish my own schoolwork. I would usually sleep at 4 a.m. and wake up two hours later to prepare for the next day.

“With all my activities — as president of the honors class, candidate for valedictorian, and training for varsity debates — those two hours of sleep were sometimes reduced to none.

There were times I wanted to give up. The hunger and lack of sleep was too much for an 11-year-old, but I was determined to prove myself. On days when I felt hopeless, I reminded myself of the 9-year-old girl and her dreams of changing the world through her Ateneo education. I would then wake up with a renewed sense of hope and an even greater determination to persevere. xxx “My success is an exception, not the norm: Rarely do we see a child from the poorest of the poor climb her way up to one of the top universities in the country and become its highest student representative. What was difficult for me is still unattainable for others and will remain so, even with Ateneo’s most generous efforts.

“That is because generosity is not enough. The success of one person should not depend on the virtue of another. I may have ex-

ceeded expectations, but let’s face it, people do not expect much from children of poor families. We are condemned by “the soft bigotry of low expectations” (as former US president George W. Bush once put it), and impeded by the hard barrier of unequal opportunity.

“I am an example of the underprivileged gaining the highest quality of education in one of the best universities in the country and achieving their dreams. It is possible, but it will take more than good intentions.

“Mine is the story of a child whose grandmother died because three hospitals refused to operate on her without a down payment, and whose grandfather tilled land that wasn’t ours for 60 years because land reform failed us.

“Mine is the story of a daughter whose father is jobless because the government phased out our jeepney in the name of hollow modernization, even before a policy to that effect was decided on.

“Ateneo may have shown my fellow students the realities of injustice in society, but to me it served as a refuge from my own experience of social inequality.

“I write this essay with gratitude to Ateneo and my scholarship benefactor, without whom this narrative would not have been See DREAMED, page 11

Congress leadership struggle WITH the start of congressional sessions in the offing, politicos are into the traditional leadership tug of war. Until topnotcher reelected Sen. Cynthia Villar gave a smirk at Sen. Manny Pacquiao, the quest for the Senate Presidency seems to be leading to the path of incumbent Tito Sotto who is on his last term.

Manny should be careful about the inchoate hubris that often comes with some victors. On the other hand, all the President’s allies should subordinate their individual aspirations in their search for the Senate leadership if their intention is to support the Duterte’s remaining 3-year rule which will be highlighted by “Build, Build, Build” agenda.

While the old guards in the Senate are saying that the 12 newcomers should first learn the nuances in upper House and should not be demanding of their choice for com-

mittee chairmanship, I think that given the last three years of Duterte’s administration, committees that are vital to the project implementation of the government must be chaired by the President’s allies they be old or newbies.

With only 24 senators to pick a President from, the struggle for supremacy in the Upper Chamber is not as complicated as what is obtaining in the Lower House with a total of 297 members, 238 among them represents congressional districts and 59 from the party lists. Aspiring to be the next Speaker of the House to replace retiring Gloria Macapagal Arroyo are Lord Velasco of Marinduque, Martin Romualdez of Leyte, Alan Peter Cayetano of Taguig, and Davao del Norte Rep. Bebot Alvarez.

Velasco, son of a former Supreme Court Justice, early on was perceived

to be close to the Duterte family, while Romualdez with a kinship with the Marcos clan is no pushover. Cayetano who was Duterte’s running mate claims to have an endorsement from the President but the behavior of sister Pia in a tackless comment on Imee Marcos education had driven a wedge between him and some supporters. Alvarez who was kicked out by 184 lawmakers during his incumbency is gunning for a comeback but he is still being hounded by Presidential daughter and Davao City Mayor Inday Sara who warns congressmen of Bebot being Machiavellian.

Still there are other potential candidates for Sp e a ke rs h ip. Pol it i c a l analyst Malou Tiquia for example hinted that San Juan Congressman Ronaldo Zamora, a bar topnotcher who dedicated the best part of his life to public service has all the qualifications

that fit the Speakership.

Indeed Z amora has an impressive political career.

He was member of the Batasan Pambansa, served as Executive Secretary, a Minority Leader and now re-elected on his third and final term as congressman.

A Marcos technocrat he has, like Speaker Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, a total grasp of economic and fiscal issues. Some critics out to discredit Zamora says that he is an oligarch but I don’t know which mold to place him.

The Hous e and the Senate leaderships matter and we hope that in their struggle our politicians must be wise in choosing who will help steer our country into the coast of progress.

Parents, Students flood at BNHS for Brigada Eskwela 2019

Banglay National High School held its National S chools Maintenance Week, also known as BRIGADA ESKWELA, on May 20 to 25, 2019.

A kick-off ceremony signaled the start of Brigada Eskwela. The presence of different groups of community volunteers, teachers, parents and students was acknowledged. A total of Three Hundred Ninety (390) volunteers rendering at least 3 hours in a day they are present.

One of the highlights of the activity is the Bazar which sold dresses and other apparel in a cheap cost to raise money and help in structuring the school. The Banglay Brigada Bazar also generated an amount of six thousand five hundred pesos (P6,500.00) which

was also used for buying additional materials used for the Brigada Activities.

Another is, first aid table used for medical treatment.

It is recorded that at least Ten (10) volunteers experiencing head ache, acquiring wounds during the activity and 1 being bitten by a bee. Lastly, the information desk which strives to serve people in getting the needed information. The total generated amount during the whole duration of the activity including the rate of volunteers and donors from partners is ninety thousand five hundred pesos (P90,500.00) The commencement of activities includes cleaning of the classroom walls, ceilings, doors, windows and window grills was conducted. I always enjoy teaching Understanding Culture, Society and Politics (UCSP) in Senior High School. Here, I am able to reflect on many things especially concerning my own Filipino culture. Fiona Bowie (2000) in her book “Anthropology of Religion” mentions about a cosmology that is being dominated by malevolent spirits. She says that this theory of the nature of the universe may indicate an environment which is hostile to human interests. This strikes me because by this definition, I can deduce that the place where I grew up has this kind of cosmology.

Most of the elder people I happened to be acquainted with in our barrio agree about the existence of extraordinary ‘beings’ or ‘spirits’ in our place. They said that they were everywhere and they thrived particularly in abandoned houses, in rivers, hills, mountains, forests and other similar environments. These ‘spirits’ were classified into two, namely: the good and the bad.

Some were considered good because they could help people in their practical needs while others were thought to be bad because they could inflict illness. What is interesting here is that the bad spirits were always taken as bad all the time whereas the good spirits were still seen as potentially evil. Thus, the elders always reminded us to ask permission from the spirits whenever we walked into a forested area.

This was to make sure that we would not disturb, tread on, hit, or hurt any unseen being along the way.

Although this cosmology of ours is likely to limit our interactions with the environment, I also understand that it somehow instills in us a great reverence or awe to nature. Despite the fact that the Church I grew up with along with science consider this particular belief of my elders as a form of superstition or paganism, still it helped us

as children to become less destructive to rivers, plants, animals, etc. I noticed that the most verdant mountains are those areas resided by people who believe in spirits.

Some good examples of these are the Subanëns who have deep respect to the spirits and their sacred territories.

This is a shocking revelation for me. The people whom I considered in my youth as backward, mediocre, and senseless are the ones who really understand and know how to care for the earth.

Conversely, many of those who fail to give due respect to nature are well-educated and rational individuals.

The cosmology in my childhood thus brings conservation to and preserves the integrity of creation. At least it provides us the idea that we humans are not the sole existing creatures in this world, i.e. aside from us other seen and unseen beings also dwell. Moreover, it also clarifies our proper place, limitations, privileges, rights, and responsibilities in this world.

On the other hand, I believe that eradicating the notion of the spirits (in favor of scientific beliefs and religion’s abhorrence to paganism) is not helpful in sustaining a viable environment.

The challenge that I see now as a teacher in UCSP is on how to reconcile this seemingly paganish belief in the spirits with mainstream religion especially in reinterpreting this belief in the light of Christian faith. Another important challenge to me is how to minimize, if not eliminate, the unfounded fear of people from these spirits while maintaining their respect to the environment.

Lastly, it is both inspiring and challenging to encourage Christians to tap the wisdom of indigenous peoples, who are the primary believers of spirits in our country, in using the natural resources correctly, respectfully, and sustainably.

The 25th day of May was the last day of the weeklong activity. Through the unwavering support of the community volunteers, teachers, parents and students, the school is now restructured. Generally, the school is evidently ready for the school opening of S.Y 2018-2019.

Who is not a fan of superhero movies? No wonder, they sprout year after year with huge box office sales.

Though, do superpowers only happen in movies?

We all have seen superheroes but no, not those that wear capes. Their responsibility however may be as big as the ones we see in films or actually, even bigger. They take on the task of shaping young minds and to say that they can change lives is never an exaggeration. Their superpowers include inspiring learners to work harder and push themselves, encouraging them to understand the importance of dedicating oneself to passion projects and endeavours. Success builds upon success. The superheroes help the young ones understand that the more they push themselves to accomplish their goals, the more they realize what they are capable of doing.

Superpower number one: the Power to Empower!

In a parallel universe, they are called by other names, but here we call them by a rather lovely term: Teachers. Becoming one provides an opportunity to nurture and encourage their learners to appreciate and develop their natural abilities and special interests. They can make all the difference in a learner’s motivation to develop his own gifts and hidden talents. Teachers help shape a learner’s self-esteem and confidence, as well as helping inspire their career aspirations and attitudes toward school. All these are made possible by their second special ability – the Power to Spot the Unique Gifts in Every Child!

Teachers are important in society because they prepare and influence tomorrow’s leaders through every day lessons about sharing, respect, valuing individuality and diversity and making ethical decisions. It is no brainer that the well-being of planet Earth greatly depends on having educated, ethical

and responsible leaders who know how to solve problems, often communicating across cultural lines. Thus, this ability of these teachers – the Power to Make Learners Feel Important and Included, will certainly create safe classroom spaces that the very same children will model as behaviours that leaders should emulate.

Above all, their greatest power lies in the acceptance that this is all part of a great purpose from a greater being: GOD, to become instruments to touch others’ lives. This Power to Acknowledge a Greater Life Purpose has long been giving these superheroes the power to endure hardships that come with the profession. The challenges of having to cross mountains and rivers to reach the learners and of having to use personal resources to ensure the quality of service. That also includes challenges that others may not know of, like having to settle with an old comfort room as an office space or having to sacrifice some family time to go an extra mile in the practice of the teaching profession.

These are things that absolutely only superheroes can overcome.

Aristotle, a teacher himself, rightly said, “Those who educate the children are more to be honored than they who produce them; for these only gave them life, those art of living well.” So teaching is a profession that provides an art of living. It is not only a duty but a moral duty. It is not a profession but a noble service to the world to create a more beautiful and peaceful world.

Teachers - superheroes who don’t wear capes, who don’t appear in big screens and who definitely don’t earn an equivalent of a box office sum. Superheroes and superpowers indeed don’t only happen in movies.

According to Rivera, Tumao alleged that a red vehicle drove him to the food house along the highway in Kauswagan to deliver the illegal drugs.

The red vehicle was no longer around when police tried to check its presence.

Rivera said that the operatives has prepared P 28,000 as the value of five bags of Shabu that was agreed to be purchased.

However, Rivera said, the suspect turned out 100 grams of Shabu when frisked by the operatives.

“I am not a user. Although I know that the item was illegal, I was forced to deliver it because I would be paid P500.00 for every delivery. I have no other means of livelihood,” Tumao told the police.

Science and writing

BREAKING into science writing is hard. In my opinion, we need more scientist writers but we also need to be humble. It’s hard work learning how to write again, deal with rejections and work in a new field.

Here’s my advice for those scientists who are willing to try writing. Learn how to write again. The passive and complex style of academic writing – written for and by scientists – doesn’t work for general audiences. Would-be science writers must critically examine their writing and return to fundamental storytelling. The pervasiveness of bad writing habits in scientists is less obvious to writers who began in

academia.

Academic writing follows a reverse pyramid structure beginning with background information and narrowing to a specific idea. By contrast, science writing often spoils the ending by stating the conclusion before the supporting details. These general patterns aren’t absolute but recognizing that general audiences have little tolerance for long-winded academic style explainers is key to getting published.

Rookie science writers must learn the art of communicating the main point without the support of extensive background information.

Sentences can look very different between academic and non-academic writing, too.

Isuzu Philippines holds 2019 Isuzu Service Skills Olympics (ISSO)

ISUZU Philippines Corporation (IPC) held its Isuzu Service Skills Olympics (ISSO) last June 1 at IPC Plant at the Laguna Technopark in Binan, Laguna. On its 14th year, ISSO has been competitive and was definitely a fierce one as each participant evidently did not hold back in showcasing their skills and knowledge in service.

The day’s proceedings started early morning with the assembly and parade of the 75 participants from 25 Isuzu dealers. Each participating dealer is equivalent to one team which is composed of three “Olympians”—a service technician, a service advisor, and a parts staff.

IPC President Hajime Koso congratulated the participants for being the chosen representatives of their respective Isuzu dealers. In his welcome remarks, he said, “Today, you are also called ‘Olympians’, because you represent the best of our dealership networks, and I predict that you will exceed your own expectations. After this

local staging, the world is waiting,” Koso said, referring to Isuzu World Technical Competitions where IPC’s Team Pilipinas, comprised of the winners of the ISSO, has performed consistently and exceptionally well since 2006.

Koso also thanked Isuzu Heart and Smile Project (IHSP) for the invaluable contribution to the development of the IPC Aftersales program through the automotive servicing vocational course program that Mr. Ida started in 2008 in collaboration with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) and World Vision Philippines—an international Christian, humanitarian, advocacy organization.

“Through this groundbreaking vocational course, IPC and its partners have been able to give once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our young, less-privileged but hardworking Filipinos to be part of the Isuzu family. IHSP

has been instrumental in improving not only the quality of our aftersales service to our loyal customers, but more importantly, the lives of many poor Filipinos,” Koso added.

In his message, Mr. Ida thanked IPC for giving him the opportunity to have an impact on the lives of the Filipino people. “I have always believed that the best asset of any company is its people. And when you bring out the best from your people, the company is able to perform at its best.

Whole brain teaching technique

A whole brain teaching technique is a brain-based teaching strategy rooted on the concepts developed by Biffle (2013) and Hermann (1998).

This strategy treat every child to have four brain areas that require close attention. The four brain areas correspond to four learning activities to address the holistic needs of an individual. The four learning activities are: lecture; individual work; group work; and practical display. Whole brain technique is a philosophy of teaching and learning that aims to activate students’ brain for maximal involvement in the learning process.

Teachers are always looking for new techniques that can more fully engage their student’s attention and mental capabilities. Improving student’s academic performance requires the teacher’s knowledge on different classroom instructions based upon how the brain gathers and store knowledge.

Learning an effective, flexible approach like this, particularly one that integrates classroom management with effective teaching technique, can give new teachers a tremendous advantage in their ability to deal with the stresses of the teaching profession.

Whole brain technique

is intended to be flexible, adaptable by any teacher to their own teaching method.

The speed with which the teacher introduces these to a class depends on the comfort level of the teacher and the students. Never try to add something new until both the teacher and the class are ready to move on. Teachers really knows what best for Thus, this technique will help to build the learning of the students and by this their whole brain will function in every decisions they encounter. It also improves student’s critical thinking in every aspects of their lives.

By this it helps them to use their learning to achieve their goals in life.

The Teaching Strategies of the Teachers Affects the Attitude of the students in Learning

The emphasis of student centered educational topics is usually on the effect of teachers’ attitude on students’ academically success with a lack of lifespan developmental perspective. A teacher with his teaching method and furthermore with his attitudes and behaviors’, provides his students to gain a mentally healthy personality and to have a new clear world view by leaving unforgettable traces on them.

The teachers, being the focal figure in education, must be competent and knowledgeable in order to impart the knowledge they could give to their students. Good teaching is a very personal manner. Effective teaching is concerned

with the student as a person and with his general development.

The teacher must recognize individual differences among his/her students and adjust instructions that best suit to the learners.

It is always a fact that as educators, we play varied and vital roles in the classroom.

Teachers are considered the light in the classroom. We are entrusted with so many responsibilities that range from the very simple to most complex and very challenging jobs. Every day we encounter them as a part of work or mission that we are in. it is very necessary that we need to understand the need to be motivated in doing our work well, so as to have motivated learners in the classroom.

“Effective learning in the classroom depends on the teacher’s ability to maintain the interest that brought students to the course in the first place (Erikson, 1978). Not all students are motivated by the same values, needs, desires and wants. Some students are motivated by the approval of other or by overcoming challenges.

However, motivating students to learn requires a very challenging role on the part of the teacher. Above all, the teacher must himself come into possession of adequate knowledge of the objectives and standards of the curriculum, skills in teaching, interests, appreciation and ideas. It needs to exert effort to lead students into the life that is large, full, stimulating and satisfying.

By forging strong relationships, educators are able to affect virtually in every aspect of their student’s lives, teaching them the important life lessons that will help them succeed.

Being a teacher, they need to build or prepare their students in building them for the new understandings.

That there might be a changes every day, every mile stone that the students will be on to.

Teacher can also be a trusted source of advice for students weighing important life decisions. Educators can help their students or guide their students to pursue higher education, explore career opportunities and compete in events they might otherwise have not thought themselves able to.

A great teacher makes learning fun, as stimulating, engaging lessons are pivotal to a students who are more prone to a student’s misbehavior, truancy or disengagement are more dependent on an engaging teacher. Making your classroom an exciting environment will hold the student’s fascinations, and students learns best when they are both challenged and interested. It is part of motivating students and building

their self which may not be easy, but which will benefit students immeasurably in the long run and will see the world with their new understanding. Preparing students on how they will interact with the things that they will be facing on and help them to be independent and knowledgeable.

Classroom might have a lot of challenges and competitions but the educators are there to help them, to guide them and to let them experiences new things that might teach the students to be stronger and to have the attitude of positivity that help them to overcome those challenges, those things that are new to them.

Maxus eyes big leap in sales volume

MANILA -- Maxus Philippines expects to double or even triple its sales volume next year, as it introduced to the Philippine market its flagship models of multipurpose vehicles (MPV) and vans.

“We have a modest target this year. Because it’s only six months, we’re looking at about 500, 600 units.

But we plan to double or triple that by next year with new product offerings,” Maxus Philippines General Manager Reginald See told reporters on the sidelines

of the launching of these models.

The industrial technology arm of Ayala Corp., AC Industrials, launched Wednesday night Maxus Philippines and flagship models the G10 family MPV, and the V80 Comfort, Flex and transport vans.

She said she would ask for donations from companies to give two to three recycled container vans to her foundation and get scientists from Virginia University to replicate the cave conditions.

“It’s tough to maintain because there’s no income.

All I have to this day are the ticket sales but these bats are very sacred to me. They always help me in whatever I do because my intention really is to protect them,” she said.

Bats roosting near the cave’s five entrances are vulnerable to the predation of crows while those bats that go down to the ground are vulnerable to lizards, snakes, rats, stray dogs and cats.

She said the population increased partly due to her conservation efforts and to the bats having no specific breeding season. Monfort, who jested to have owned the “biggest brothel” on Samal Island, said her “bats are always fornicating” year-round.

“I see them pregnant in January and December again, walang cycle (no cycle), maybe because there are no disturbances,” she said.

Monfort said the artificial caves are planned to rise at the back of her mango orchard away from the existing bat cave within her family’s 21-hectare estate in Barangay Tambo, Babak, Island Garden City of Samal (Igacos).

She said the construction would be done in the evening, when most of the nocturnal creatures would emerge from the cave and cross Davao

“The babies who cannot be carried by the mother are still inside the cave.. That’s why, one group comes back at 2 a.m. and I think they come back to regurgitate the foods to their babies,” she said.

Collecting guano She wants that man-made caves to be designed with a technology that can allow her to collect the expensive “guano,” the bat droppings known to be potent fertilizers.

According to Bat Conservation International, the guano in caves “support whole ecosystems of unique organisms, including bacteria useful in detoxifying wastes, improving detergents, and producing alcohol and antibiotics.”

“Would you like anybody when you’re sleeping, coming in, getting your stuff there?

So, they would leave when they are more vulnerable to predators,” she said.

Monfort said she does not want to make a fortune at the expense of her “sacred” bats even as heaps of uncollected “guano” are just sitting inside her cave.

“I cannot collect. Everybody collects. That’s why most of the caves in The Philippines are empty. This is the only one you can find anywhere.

I don’t make money out of the guano,” she said. “Will you rather lose babies?” she asked.

Monfort said she forbade anyone from entering the cave to avoid disturbing the inhabitants inside.

She said a team of experts from Tokyo University wanted to conduct a study on bats but later she had turned it down because she did not want a single bat getting hurt for science.

“I was going to allow them first, of course, my questionnaire was rigorous. I asked what happens if you find diseases transferred or people giving anything to the bats because it could work two ways. What they told me was something like ‘we will cross the bridge when we get there.’

I told them I’m not going to allow. I’m sorry,” she said.

Monfort enlisted the help of Bat Conservation International to help teach anything about bat conservation as she had no idea what to do with the bat cave when she inherited the property from her parents.

In 2004, Monfort filed for the conversion of her property as a conservation area for bats after the government attempted to include her land as part of the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program.

‘Night pollinators’ Monfort said the bats, as night pollinators, play a big role in the fruit production in Davao Region.

She said the bats made “Davao life is here,” a tourism slogan of Davao City, possible because of the abundance of fruits here and emphasized the importance of bats in the quest for peace.

“Without the bats, I will always say there will be war.

If you do not have forest you do not have food, we are going to kill each other first, to secure food for ourselves,” Monfort said.

She said the bats are the only pollinators of durian, the so-called “king of fruits,” because their flower buds would open for one hour at nighttime, allowing the bats to pollinate them.

“I will not stop until the region gives the long overdue credit for these bats because you guys are so ambivalent up to now. You eat durian, you eat the fruits, you eat everything, you look at the weather and ever ything, bountiful harvest, no one thanks the bats, because you think they are pests. They are not..
