LTFRB-10 can’t revise taxi fare hike in Oro, but…

CAGAYAN de Oro City-The regional office of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board-10 (LTFRB-10) is ready to receive any request that would exempt the city’s taxi drivers and operators from applying the additional charges to their passengers.

If the city’s legislators, commuters and the transport sector can draw up a petition so that the additional charges to the regular taxi fare could not be implemented, LTFRB-10 regional director Aminoden Guro said he will welcome such initiative.

Guro was reacting to a news report stating that City Councilor Teodulfo Lao Jr., chairman of the public utilities committee, has complained about the new charges and accused the agency of implementing the new rates without holding public consultations.

Inflation no effect on govt projects

FINANCE Secretary Carlos “Sonny” Dominguez III on Tuesday said that the rising inflation rates will not hinder the Duterte administration from implementing projects that will be beneficial to Filipinos in the long run.

“We shall continue to prioritize investments that will improve health and education of our people, enhance security and public order and build a world class infrastructure,” Dominguez said in a press conference in Seoul, South Korea.

“We realized that this is not an easy task. We have to face the short term challenges of the fast growing economy and we must tackle these problems in order to succeed in the long run. The 4.6 percent inflation rate in May of 2018 cannot hinder us from our objective,” he added.

CAGAYAN de Oro City-The City Council has asked the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) to immediately decide on the motion for reconsideration asked by Misamis Oriental-1 Rural Electric Service Cooperative (Moresco-1) on ERC’s decision to dismiss Moresco-1’s complaint alleging that Cagayan Electric Power and Light Company (Cepalco) was encroaching on its franchise area of barangay Canitoan.

Councilor Teodulfo Lao, chair of the committee on public utilities, said the contested area is the profitrich 36-hectare Pontefino Estates which ERC stated in its latest decision is not part of barangay Canitoan.

Situated along Masterson Ave., Pontefino Estates is a complex of high-end gated subdivisions in uptown Cagayan de Oro. On its official website, it doesn’t list its address as either barangay Canitoan or Carmen.

THE Philippines has asked South Korea to lower tariffs on the country’s agricultural exports such as banana and pineapple from the current 25-30 percent to 5 percent, Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez said.

In a press briefing at the Imperial Palace Boutique Hotel in Seoul, South Korea, Lopez said the country seeks to increase the volume of its exports to South Korea by relaxing the hefty taxes on agricultural products that are not yet covered by the ASEAN-Korea Free Trade Agreement.

The official said the 5-percent tariff rate is similar to the tariff level that the Philippines imposes on imported goods from South Korea.

“In other words, tayo po nagbaba na ng taripa (We have already cut tariff rates).

So we are basically asking for reciprocity as to the products that would enter South Korea,” he added.

Lopez said the Philippines is currently South Korea’s largest supplier of banana, but its market share is threatened by suppliers

Too late the hero

SPEAKING before a young crowd in time for the World Environment Day in Cebu lately, Sen. Loren Legarda announced she would file a bill banning the use of micro plastics in consumer products that harm the environment and threaten marine life.

With all her accolades as a self-proclaimed environmentalist, Legarda’s move (read: dream) to come up with that bill is another political grandstanding.

Too late the hero and here’s why.

For a long, long time, Mother Earth has a plastic problem, even before Legarda came into being.

Already more than 9.1 billion tons of plastic of any kind and in any form are produced on Earth regularly and dumped into open

spaces -- landfills, seas and oceans, mountains, plains and plateaus.

Name it, the Earth have it. Plastic is everywhere.

The report in the journal Science Advances is described as the first global analysis of all mass-produced plastics and warns that an even more dire scenario lies ahead.

At the current pace, over 13 billion tons of plastic waste will be discarded in landfills or in the environment by 2050.

This amount -- which converts to 12 billion in metric tons -- is about 35,000 times as heavy as the Empire State Building in New York.

Most plastics do not biodegrade in any meaningful sense, so the plastic waste humans have generated could be with us for

hundreds or even thousands of years.

The estimates underscore the need to think critically about the materials we use and our waste management practices.

Researchers compiled their data from production statistics for resins, fibers and additives from a variety of industry sources.

The report found out that as of 2015, nearly seven billion tons (6.3 metric tons) of plastic waste were generated on Planet Earth.

A total of 79 percent of that plastic waste accumulated in landfills or the environment, including the oceans. Despite widespread efforts toward re-usability, only nine percent was recycled. Another 12 percent was incinerated, a process that can also be harmful to

the environment.

Recycling is not much help when it comes to plastics, because they do not dissolve in the environment. None of the plastics in widespread use are biodegradable.

Just over two tons of plastics were produced globally in 1950, when mass manufacturing of the durable material began, said the report.

This arrest showed that it has become a lot easier now to hold those who have committed heinous and gruesome crimes liable, preventing them from avoiding liability for the crimes they so stoically carried out. This should deter would-be criminals or other people planning to commit one crime or another, and make them think twice before doing anything, for it is now a certainty that they would be caught soon after the crime.

At present, many Filipi-

nos are telling me they are actually praying for Avenido to fight his arresting officers, or even try to escape from them, to justify immediate retaliatory action by the police against him. It is said that Avenido, and others like him who have no qualms in killing their fellowmen even for no reason at all, have no reason live further.

Many have even expressed wonder why Avenido is still alive up to this time, after his arrest by the authorities.

But the woman fought back. That prompted Avenido and his gang to repeatedly stab her to death. Unknown to Avenido however, CCTV cameras were filming what they were doing to the hapless lady. Too, there were witnesses who saw the event and who are even now in police custody, giving their statements against Avenido and his cohorts.

Governor Mujiv Hataman on the passage of the BBL

We welcome the passage of the Bangsamoro Basic Law. This recent development, and the processes that have brought us to this point, had been sustained by the strength of generations and the faith of millions.

We express our gratitude to the 17th Congress, and to the men and women who stayed the course to pass this law. We have every confidence that the final version of BBL will remain true—both to the spirit and the letter—of earlier frameworks and agreements with the stakeholders of the Bangsamoro narrative.

We in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao continue to push for a

Bangsamoro Basic Law that is compliant with the previously signed Comprehensive Agreement on Bangsamoro, as the passed measure is brought to the table of the bicameral conference scheduled next month.

The BBL should bring forth an institution that is capable of responding to the challenge of the times and to the aspirations of the Bangsamoro, unimpaired and free of the maladies that have afflicted the ARMM. The BBL is envisioned to codify not only a law, but a history of struggle and sacrifice—by countless mujahideen, their families, and fellow Moros, as well as all of the Filipino people

who were unwavering in their hope and their actions for peace, social justice, inclusiveness, and progress.

A law finds life in the commitment of our leaders—leaders from the halls of the national government all the way to our communities. It needs to be upheld constantly.

While the passage of the BBL on third and final reading is a step forward towards the realization of our hopes for the Bangsamoro, we recognize that the BBL will remain a piece of paper if we cease putting in the hard work it takes to implement the law.

Let us not cease being vigilant. Let us ensure that

this law works for our people, so we will not reopen old wounds, or old fears and despairs that can be exploited by those who wish to take us from the path of solidarity and moderation.

This passage is not the end. Rather it is an encouraging milestone on our journey to peace, our unfolding story of selfdetermination.

Our goal as we move forward is to redouble our efforts to accurately translate the words of the BBL into actions and decisions.

We owe this to those who came before us. Even more so, we owe this to the coming generations of Moros and our fellow Filipinos.

But what truly riles here is this: according to the news, Avenido is a fugitive from justice, he having ran away from yet another murder case in General Santos City. The reason why he went to Metro Manila is to let cool things a bit in GenSan. Unfortunately, because he knew no decent work, he resorted to petty crimes like robbery to earn some money. Imagine, a fugitive having no remorse at all being allowed to roam our streets?

Faced with this gruesome situation, it would be best for everybody who still believe in God to strive to strengthen their faith in Him, through a diligent reading of, and sincere meditation on, His Word, and through an honestto-goodness obedience to His commands. Davao mayor lauds arrest of NPA leader DAVAO CITY--Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio lauded the military for the successful operation leading to the apprehension of Elizalde Cañete alias Ka Jinggoy, the top leader of the New People’s Army (NPA) operating in Davao Region and some parts of Bukidnon.

“I am very happy with the result of the operation of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) we can really see the outcome of their hard work to apprehend the big personalities in the rebel group. I’d like to congratulate them on this

success,” the mayor said on Tuesday.

Duterte-Carpio said that the apprehension of Cañete was a big step in achieving justice for all atrocities involving the rebel leader in the city.

She also asked for the people’s support to the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to continue giving their trust and confidence to the men in uniform to achieve just and lasting peace in the city.

“I’d like to solicit the support of the public in all the programs and projects of the city government of

Davao, AFP, Philippine National Police and the barangays because these institutions represent the government which the people should support,” the mayor said.

The mayor added that the city will support the filing of charges against Cañete to give justice to those people who were affected by the action of the NPA leader.

“The city will help in the filing of charges against him,” she said. “The City Prosecutor’s Office will file charges against them.”

Larry Buenafe, a fish vendor was killed after an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) exploded after the rebels burned the Lapanday Box Plant in Mandug last year.

The mayor called on the NPA and asked for justice for the death of Buenafe.

On May 29, Cañete was turned over to Davao City Police Office (DCPO) after he was arrested in a hospital in Bukidnon.

Cañete replaced Leoncio Pitao who was killed in an encounter with the 10th Infantry Division in 2015.

Investors eye tourism opportunities in Mati DAVAO CITY – Mati City in Davao Oriental province is now experiencing an influx of investors mostly engaged in tourism-related businesses, an official said.

Mati City Promotions and Investments chief Tanya Rabat-Tan said the investors are particularly interested in the commercial area within the 7-km. beachline of Barangay Dahican, which has become a favorite summer destination for its white sand beach.

However, in an interview on Monday, Tan said the booming tourism industry has led to the rising rate of land acquisitions, causing the value of real estate in the area to shoot up from PHP1,000 per square meter to PHP10,000 per square meter in the past three years.

The investors are coming in from other regions and provinces, even from Manila, she said.

Mati City has 17 resorts and hotels and Tan said the city government is still swamped with inquiries from prospective hotel operators.

Tan said the real estate buying frenzy is expected to further swell once the rehabilitation of the Mati Airport is completed.

Since their separation, they had never been communicating or supporting either financially or emotionally to each other, neither minding each other affair’s; Petitioner’s seek judicial decree of divorce, thereby, severing their marriage bond on May 30, 2003, so that they will have free hand to do what a single man or woman could do without marital burdens. Reconciliation between them had already been diligently employed but all proved futile.

WHEREFORE, finding this petition to be sufficient in form and substance, set the initial hearing of this case on June 29, 2018 at 9:00 a.m. at which time, date and place. The video tackles the story of a “Suicide Squad”, a group of about 30 individuals who apparently risked their lives to help save people during the Marawi siege, reportedly wearing little protection, such as construction helmets.

The public and some lawmakers have blamed the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion (TRAIN) law for the increase in the prices of basic goods and services.

The finance chief, however, assured the public that the government is not casting the figures aside and that it was doing its best to assist the impact of TRAIN through mitigation measures.

“We already know that the main contributors for inflation are higher tobacco products, the cost of... the imported cost of fuel and the higher prices of rice, corn and fish. And we are already taking steps to stay ahead of the situation,” Dominguez said.

He also reiterated that TRAIN is not the sole reason for the increase in inflation but also the effect of high global oil prices driven by unfavorable geopolitical events, along with the import quotas on rice.

He said the best way to address inflation is to pass the Rice Tariffication Act. “The estimates are it will bring down rice prices by around

7 pesos per kilo for the Filipino families and reduce inflation to below 4 percent by the second half of the year. We will continue our efforts for our people and for the future generations,” Dominguez said.
