City council asked LTFRB to suspend taxi fare rates in Oro
THE City Council during its 83rd regular session last Monday, presided over by Vice Mayor Raineir Joaquin V. Uy, adopted a resolution requesting the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) to suspend for the meantime the increase of the taxi fare rates in Cagayan de Oro City. This is in response to the special report of Councilor Teodulfo Lao Jr., chair of the City Council commitTAXICABS. DA-10 funds livestock auction market in CDO
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- Livestock farmers in Cagayan de Oro City will now have a place to sell their farm animals as the Livestock Auction Market will soon rise in Barangay Mambuaya, Cagayan de Oro City. The project is funded under the Bottom-Up Budgeting Program of the Department of Agriculture – Regional Field Office 10 (DA-RFO 10). In behalf of Carlene C. Collado, regional director, Lester A. Jaducana, administrative and finance division chief, handed over the check worth P3.57 million to city government representative Hector R. San Juan, DVM, city agriculturist of the Agricultural Productivity Operations Office (APOO). The total cost of the project amounts to P5 million wherein the city government counterpart is P1.43 million. This is intended for the construction of four buildings within the onehectare agricultural lot, for Cattle and Pig Holding Shed, Admin building and the livestock auction facility. Iligan City commemorates 120th National Flag Day ILIGAN CITY -- Flag Day in the Philippines is marked with the raising of the national flag on May 28, and permanently displayed until June 12 (Philippine Independence Day). The local government of Iligan, its officials and city government employees, the Philippine Veterans Federated, Iligan City Chapter, the Philippine National Police force, army reservists, private school, and other national government line agencies, joined the country in its flag raising ceremony held at the Anahaw Amphitheatre, Buhanginan Hills, City hall, Pala-o, Iligan city. During the ceremony, a group of Boy Scouts of the Philippines (BSP), Iligan City Chapter, marched the flag to its pole, with the officials led by City Mayor Celso G. Regencia, and singing the national anthem while it was raised. Part of the program was the reading of the symbols of the Flag and its history, by

It commemorates the first use of the Philippine flag after the victory in the Battle of Alapan in 1898. There is a white equilateral triangle at the hoist with a golden sun with eight rays in the center and a five-pointed gold star at each vertex. The flag was first raised after the Battle of Alapan that occurred on May 28, 1898. The battle was fought between the Filipino revolutionaries led by Aguinaldo and Spanish troops. Trade war or not?
EUROPEAN Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini doesn’t want to use the word “war” when speaking about EU-US relations. It’s true that the EU has to defend its interests, she says, “but we’re not at war with anyone.” Fine. But the fact is, the EU caught between desire for retaliation and calm. No wonder! The EU doesn’t want to just put up with Donald Trump’s higher import tariffs and is mulling retaliatory measures. But German firms, in particular, fear that no one would profit from an escalation of the situation. And that’s indeed true. While being off to Manila due to several events (Philippine Independence Day is just around the corner!), I got this in mind: Is Trump’s Korea policy calculated chaos? As the US scrambles to reorganize a summit with North Korea, positive outcomes are far from certain. Rather than a calculated strategy, the Trump administration’s disorganized diplomacy is leaving the world in suspense. Latest news on my desk: June 12 is final for the Trump-Kim meeting. Who knows? Fact is also: the European Commission is hopping mad, and it’s ready to fight back. For its president, JeanClaude Juncker, the higher US tariffs are “protectionism, simple as that.” The US, he says, leaves the EU with no other choice than to initiate a WTO case. However, a ruling by the world trade body is likely to take months. Also, US President Donald Trump has already signaled his country would withdraw from the World Trade Organization, should it side with the EU in its ruling. In other words, Europeans shouldn’t pin too much hope on the WTO. Juncker said the EU executive would come up
with an adequate response nonetheless, as retaliatory measures such as higher EU import duties on US products had been prepared ahead of the US decision. Among the American items to be targeted would be ships and other products made with steel, whiskey, peanut butter, Harley-Davidsons and Levi’s jeans worth €2.8 billion ($3.27 billion). That’s far less than the EU steel and aluminum exports to the US - worth €6.4 billion annually - which are affected by the Trump administration’s decision. EU counter-tariffs could only be implemented after June 20, and it’s unclear whether they will come at all. The bloc’s member states will have to come to a joint decision, but positions currently differ widely. Higher US tariffs on cars would be a blow to Germany’s auto industry. That’s for sure! Of course, some EU states are not affected at all. Good for them. The managing director of the Federation of German Wholesale, Foreign Trade and Services (BGA), Gerhard Handke, told Reuters that not all EU member countries were affected by the higher tariffs to the same extent. He said there are nations that do not export steel or aluminum to the US at all. Handke argues that those nations are not interested in retaliation. Fine, but where is the spirit of UNITED Europe? Yes, I know. It’s gone already - as many Europe critics voiced out. By contrast, Germany is hit hardest. “Against this background, keeping the EU’s ranks closed despite different national interests among the 27 members will be a tall order,” Handke commented. Instead of coming up with comprehensive retaliatory measures, he suggests the EU to keep negotiating with the US. He fears that
Economic nationalism leads to war, and that’s exactly what happened in the 1930s.’ otherwise there may be a devastating, psychologically induced impact on the market alongside the damage that businesses stand to incur. The head of Germany’s steel and metalworking industry group WSM, Christian Vietmeyer, doesn’t beat about the bush. “Any EU response that could lead to a further escalation and more trade barriers would do even more damage — Brussels should stay calm,” he said. German carmaker Volkswagen agrees that a spiral of sanctions and counter-sanctions would see no winners in the end. Donald Trump has already threatened to impose higher import tariffs on cars, which would deal a serious blow to Europe’s powerhouse. So, trade war or not? And please accept by apologizing for using the term “war.” Bernd Lange, who heads the European Parliament’s INTA trade committee, is trying to combine a certain readiness to compromise with what he believes is the need to counter Trump’s latest move with determination and resolve. “Trump is attempting to blackmail us, and that’s why we have to initiate an adequate response without provoking a further escalation,” he told German public radio. He suggested the EU should also raise import tariffs, but not to the

same extent as the Trump administration. And that’s what will most likely happen next. Lange criticized German Economy Minister Peter Altmaier, who he said wanted to strike a deal with Donald Trump at all costs. “But no, we shouldn’t negotiate a dirty deal under duress.” Altmaier himself said people should remain levelheaded. He told German public broadcaster ARD (the first German TV channel after WWII) he hoped a process of contemplation would kick in in the US given that many goods would become more expensive there with the imposition of higher import duties. The minister added that people should not be fooled by Trump’s threats toward German car-makers, calling on Europeans to stand and act together and possibly teaming up with Canada and Mexico, which have already announced countermeasures. But not everyone is willing to stay calm and treat the trade spat as a purely economic conflict. French President Emmanuel Macron took a look back in history. “Economic nationalism leads to war, and that’s exactly what happened in the 1930s,” he said. THINK a minute. In a war rule number one is you must know who you’re fighting. Otherwise, you’ll waste a lot of time and energy fighting the wrong enemy. Our life’s daily struggles are like a battle. But many times the enemy we’re fighting is right inside our own mind! Nothing can defeat and damage your life more than your own wrong thinking about yourself. If you believe that you’re not smart or don’t have any special abilities, then you’ll never succeed in life because that’s just how you’ll live. We become whatever we
think we are—even if it’s not true to begin with. That’s why the Bible says: “As a man thinks about himself, so is that man.” Your low self-confidence will limit and paralyze you. You may actually have many abilities, but if you don’t believe you have them, then you’ll never use them and benefit from them. In zoos, a baby elephant is tied with a strong, thick chain to a big post. At first, the elephant pulls and tries to get free from the chain. But finally it gives up and stops trying. After that, only a small, thin rope is needed to tie that big, powerful elephant down and stop it
from moving far. The rest of its life, that elephant believes the lie and illusion that it’s too weak to break that little rope. You see, we all can become a bit like that elephant. If I let myself think and believe that I cannot go any further in life, even though it’s not true, then I won’t. That’s the power my own mind and wrong thinking about myself can have over my life. Banana growers hope Duterte’s Korea visit results in lower tariff DAVAO CITY -- The Pilipino Banana Growers and Exporters Association (PBGEA) has expressed hope that President Rodrigo Duterte’s visit to South Korea would result in reduced tariff for the export of Cavendish bananas. PBGEA members were elated when they were invited to join the team of the President, through Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez, PBGEA executive director,
Stephen Antig, said during a press conference at the Apo View Hotel here Friday. The association was given five slots to join the Philippines-South Korea Business Forum and Witnessing of the Exchange of Business Agreement, to be held on June 5 on the sidelines of Duterte’s visit to South Korea. “We are happy that the present administration has taken steps to look into the
series of concerns that we have elevated to the government,” Antig said. PBGEA’s participation in the business forum is an indication that the government is giving importance to the banana sector, he said. “We are hoping that this trip will give importance and focus on the tariff issues that we had been asking long before,” he added. However, Antig pointed
out that the tariff issue is not easy to settle because the Philippines falls under the Asean-Korea Free Trade Agreement (AKFTA) for both plantation products and fresh and dried bananas, which have been classified under Korea’s Highly Sensitive Group E. (CLI) is set to hit P5.3 billion year-end target revenue, 35% higher than last year’s, and invest PhP8.8 billion capex for land acquisition and project development this year. The listed company also reports an outstanding 2017 and excellent Q1 2018 performance during its annual stockholders meeting on May 30 at the 38 Park Avenue showroom in Cebu IT Park, Cebu City. CLI hit a record high 2017 financial performance and surpassed targets with Php 3.93 billion in revenue and NIAT at Php 1.3 billion, both up by 66% year-on-year. With reservation sales expected to rise by 53% to P7 billion, net income after tax is projected at P1.7 billion in 2018 or 31% more than last year’s. The company’s solid balance sheet is positioned to support further expansion

Maritime cop arrested for extortion in Basilan was arrested after he received the marked money from a CITF operative, who posed as a cargo shipper, in an entrapment around 3:15 p.m. Friday at the port area of Isabela City. He said the entrapment operation was initiated after the CITF validated a complaint they received through its hotline number that some PNP personnel are extorting PHP500 to PHP1,000 from cargo shippers in exchange for the issuance of travel clearance to board the ships plying the Isabela-Zamboanga
route. Soil painting: reviving a dying art at CU museum Monday, June 4, 2018

FIVE artists from Bukidnon converged together and decided to embark on a Mindanao-wide tour to showcase their soil paintings. According to art enthusiast Noah Paylaga, soil painting is an emerging medium in Mindanao that needs to be exposed. For this, 34 artworks from the five artists identified as Raul Bendit, Juan Cabaluna, Epoy Eslao, Aljade Roa and Chong Tecson are currently on exhibit at the Capitol University Museum of Three Cultures which will run until June 30. The exhibit is aptly titled as Mensahe Gikan sa Bugta: Kinaiyahan, Kultura ug Kalinaw. The Cagayan de Oro leg is just the first pit stop
island-wide. Paylaga said they intend to promote soil painting because it is economically sound (minimal use of materials), environmentally sound and financially sound. Instead of using the usual coloring materials for painting, the artists use what is readily available and abundant in their environment: soil. Take some raw soil, mix it with a water-based medium and what do you get? Soil paint, you are correct. You’ll be surprised that our soil has rich colors of reds, browns and grays!
