Tons of garbage to be sent back to Hongkong By CRIS DIAZ Executive Editor

TAGOLOAN, Misamis Oriental: Tons of garbage disguised as computer parts would be sent back to Hongkong Monday, a customs official said here. John Simon, the collector of the Bureau of Customs of the sub-port of the Mindanao International Container Terminal (MICT) here, said that the “re-exportation” of the waste materials would

be launched in a send-off ceremony Monday morning. He said that the waste materials consisting of 22 bags loaded in a 40-footer container van arrived at the MICT January 2 on board SITC Fujian, a cargo vessel, purportedly coming from the Hongkong-based company Hin Yuen Tech. Evn. Ltd. Simon said that the shipment has all the necessary papers, which turned out

to be fake and the cargoes was also consigned to a non-existent Crowd Win Industrial Limited company in Pasay City. According to Simon, the shipment was monitored by the EcoWaste Coalition, an environmental group, which coordinated with the Bureau of Customs and joined in the probe. Aileen Lucero, the national coordinator of the EcoWaste Coalition, said

that the 40-foot container van shipment of garbage was reported to be a trial shipment of another 70 container vans waiting to be shipped once the shipment succeeds. Malacañang earlier said that the waste would be shipped back to the China’s administered region of Hongkong. Simon said that the BOC has been on its feet following the arrival of imported

shipment at the MICT since last year when tons of waste materials mis-declared as “recyclable” materials from South Korea were unloaded at the MICT, the port of entry of the Phividec, the industrial zone in Misamis Oriental. About 50 container vans of the waste materials shipped to Misamis Oriental in October last year were already shipped, back to South Korea, while

the remaining 5,000 tons of garbage remain in the stockyard of the Verde Soko, the South Korean company, after the BOC issued a warrant of seizure and detention following the filing of appropriate charges against the South Korean firm. Simon said that the BOC has also recommended the issuance of the Warrant of Seizure and Detention (WSD) against the “trash See GARBAGE, page 11

Bautista, who was the over-all ground commander during the Marawi siege in 2017, earned sympathies from Meranaws who publicly shown their sympathies on Facebook. Tulfo appeared furious in one of the latest episodes of his radio show. “Tinatawagan ka namin para marining ng kababayang mahihirap ang stand ng mga mahihirap. Group encourages Filipinos to raise the flag vs onslaught of foreign waste THE spate of illegal waste shipments intercepted by customs authorities drove an environmental group to call on all Filipinos to raise the flag and make a collective stance against the entry of garbage from overseas. The EcoWaste Coalition, an environmental health and justice group, suggested the move as the country marks the National

Flag Day on May 28. From May 28 to June 12, as per Executive Order 179, Series of 1994, Filipinos are encouraged to display the flag to memorialize the first time the national emblem was unfurled at a battle in Alapan, Imus, Cavite in 1898. “We find it very timely and necessary that we, as one people, take a united stance against the

onslaught of foreign garbage that seems to be invading our shores,” stated Eileen Sison, President, EcoWaste Coalition. “From mixed plastic wastes from Canada, South Korea and Hong Kong to mixed residual wastes processed into fuel from Australia, our country has fallen victim to this insidious See RAISE, page 11
