UCPB owns P32m cash seized in Oro By Joann Santiago PNA and GERRY LEE GORIT Correspondent

THE United Coconut Planters Bank (UCPB) on Tuesday said the manual transfer of millions-worth of cash within its branches is a normal process, thus, there is nothing unusual on the P32 million funds that were intercepted by the police at the Cagayan de Oro port Sunday evening. In a statement, the bank said it was “aware of the transfer,” citing that “it is part of the normal procedure to move excess cash from one cash center to another.” “The movement of the cash within the Bank’s cash centers is an internal procedure, and as such, it does not need prior approval from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas,” it said. “The Bank’s legal team in Cagayan de Oro is coordinating with port See cash, page 15

Govt wont talk with terrorists, Palace says

Malacañang on Tuesday reiterated the government’s policy not to negotiate with terrorists amid reports that the leaders of the Maute Group has offered to release a catholic priest in exchange for their parents who are in government custody. “Government’s policy not to negotiate with terrorists remains,” Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella said in a Palace briefing. “ The local religious leader-led talks with the terrorists last Sunday is one of that was not sanctioned by government, the military and our political leaders. Any demands made inside, therefore, hold no basis,” he said. Abella’s statements came in the wake of reports that several Muslim leaders met on Sunday with Abdullah Maute, one of two brothers leading the siege of Marawi. The meeting supposedly happened during the Woman warrior. A female soldier is among the escorts of an imam (left) to a conflict zone in Marawi City on Sunday, 25 June 2017. VP Leni appeals for unity in facing Marawi crisis BALO-I, Lanao del Norte-Filipinos should show unity in facing the crisis caused by the siege in Marawi City and contribute everything they can to resolve it, Vice President Leni Robredo said in a visit to the evacuees here on Monday. “Dapat more than at any other time sa ating bansa, ngayon dapat tayong magpakita na nagkakaisa tayo (More than at any time in our country, now is the time for us to show that we are united),” Robredo said. She said she believes the government is doing everything but that there’s no telling when the siege will end. “We can only hope that this will end soon. Because

that is the question that all the evacuees have been asking us. When can we go back to Marawi? When can we go back to our respective homes? It is a question that we cannot answer definitely,” she said. She said that whenever she would ask evacuees about their conditions they would ask back “kailan ba ito matatapos? (when will this end)”. Asked if it’s possible to go beyond a military objective through a political solution, Robredo said the government must push the “peace process for everyone”. But the vice president clarified that she did not mean including the Maute Group in the process. Robredo said that while

the way the administration has been handling the threat of terrorism may not be perfect, everyone must cooperate “rather than criticize tayo nang mag-criticize”. “Magtulungan na lang tayo kasi maraming pangangailangang talagang kailangan sagutin (Let’s just work together because there are plenty of needs that must be addressed),” she said. The Marawi siege started when the ISIS-inspired Maute Group occupied portions of the city on May 23. The group is said to have linked up with the Abu Sayyaf, which is based in Basilan and Sulu and thrives Tents have been put up in an evacuation center for Marawi City evacuees at the Al on kidnap-for-ransom ac- Markazie Islamic Institute in Balo-i, Lanao del Norte on June 26, 2017.
