TAGOLOAN, Misamis Oriental--The Regional Trial Court (RTC) in Misamis Oriental has issued arrest warrants to three South Korean nationals suspected of importing 6,000 metric tons of garbage in July 2018.

Graft raps file vs. 11 officials in Iligan City By CRIS DIAZ Executive Editor

CAGAYAN de Oro City-Eleven village chiefs in the neighboring city of Iligan faced anti-graft charges with violation of the “Ecological Solid Waste Management Segregation Act,” Jo Pantoja, the city’s spokesperson said Thursday. Pantoja said that City Mayor Celso Regencia ordered the filing of the antigraft charges against the village officials after defying the order to implement the environmental laws in their respective villages. He said that despite the repeated order, the 11 village officials have also repeatedly

defied the order. According to Pantoja, the city government has allocated P 350,000 to 32 urban barangays in Iligan City for the construction of the garbage bins that would segregate waste in accordance with the solid management laws. He said that the village officials would have no reason to defy or violate the waste management laws because the city government supports them in the implementation of the law. Customs collector John Simon, of the sub-port of the Mindanao International Container Terminal (MICT), identified the South Korean national as Jae Ryang Cho, Sena Na, and Chul Soo Cho a.k.a Charles Cho. Simon said that the Bureau of Customs filed the charges against the three South Koreans for violation of various environmental laws under Republic Act 6969 in connection with the smuggling of 6,500 metric tons of garbage from July 2018 to October 2018. According to Simon, the Bureau of Customs has also

included Filipinos serving as officials of the Verde Soco, the South Korean-owned “plastic” factory in the industrial site in Tagolo-an, Misamis Oriental. Following the issuance of the arrest warrants, Simon issued a public appeal for the immediate arrest of the three South Korean nationals. Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental-The EcoWaste Coalition, an environmental health and justice group, welcomed the agreement reached by the governments of the Philippines and South Korea toward the repatriation of 5,177 tons of illegal traffic waste originating from the latter.
