CHED warned against removing Filipino in college subjects In a dialogue yesterday with the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), ACT Teachers Representative Antonio Tinio together with the Alyansa ng mga Tagapagtanggol ng Wikang Filipino (TANGGOL WIKA) called for the inclusion of Filipino and Panitikan subjects in higher education. The solon warned that failure to do so violates a 2015 Supreme Court (SC) Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) and will make CHED officials liable for contempt. Tinio and Tanggol Wika arranged the dialogue after CHED issued Memorandum Orders (CMOs) 13 to 51, series of 2017 pertaining to the policies, standards and guidelines (PSGs) for different courses. Included in each PSG is the curriculum for the course. "The SC via its 2015 TRO stopped CHED from implementing CMO 20, series of 2013, which set a
area,” 602ND Infantry Brigade Spokesperson, Capt. Napoleon Alcarioto said. More than 1,300 residents of Pigcawayan are temporarily taking shelter at the Pigcawayan National High School. Authorities clarified there had been no hostagetaking during the attack, but only trapped individuals. “We have talked to the civilians. It was clear that they were just trapped inside the school,” said Capt. Alcarioto He said it just so happened that the civilians ran to the school when they heard gunshots. Coincidentally the BIFF also went to the school looking See control, page 11
new general education (GE) curriculum minus Filipino and Panitikan. Yet, CHED’s new PSGs still implement CMO 20 and fail to include the mandated 6 to 9 units of Filipino subjects and 3 to 6 units of Panitikan subjects," Tinio explained. "Clearly, CHED violates the TRO." "If this continues, this will earn CHED not just a contempt charge before the high court but also more protests against their antiFilipino language stand," Tinio stressed. "The course syllabus for Batsilyer ng Artes sa Filipino, for example, excludes Filipino and Panitikan units from the enumeration of mandatory subjects. All PSGs also have similar provisions pointing to CMO 20 as basis for its GE." At the dialogue, Tinio and TANGGOL WIKA called on CHED, especially Chair Patricia Licuanan, to immediately amend See warned, page 11
