Lagonglong evacuees no longer ‘welcome’ in park

THE provincial government of Misamis Oriental on Tuesday warned that the evacuees from sitio Mikamansi in Lagonglong town will be charged with forced entry if they will go back to the provincial capitol grounds for no reason.

TAGOLOAN, Misamis Oriental--One of President Duterte’s allies believes that it is just right for the president not to immediately pick a fight with China over the sinking of a Filipino boat hit by a Chinese vessel in the West Philippine Sea. Atty. Franklin Quijano, administrator and chief of executive officer (CEO) of Phividec Industrial Authority, believes that although it is wrong to use the term “just a little maritime incident”, the president is just right to be diplomatic in dealing the issue.

“You really have to do diplomacy... ang statemanship,” Quijano said in an interview after a media briefing on Tuesday (June 18) at the Phividec Conference Room in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental.

DAVAO City--Pete Maverick Nicole Estudillo, the first summa cum laude to graduate from the University of the Philippines Mindanao (UPMin), dedicates her victory to the UPMin community.

A Food Technolog y major, Estudillo scored a cumulative Weighted Average Grade (CWAG) of 1.1971, the highest record in the university since its establishment in 1995.

For Estudillo, getting the highest average grade is not only one individual’s recognition. “Summa is just

a bonus and summa is really not for me. It’s for UPMin,” she said.

“When the honor was given to me, I felt happy for UPMin. That the hope that has long been in the hearts of the alumni and the profs, that we’ll have a summa, has finally come and I was happy that I get to be the answer to their prayers,” she added.

Estudillo said she did not think of receiving the highest grade in her courses when she got admitted to UP. For her, being in one of the most competitive state universities in the country, passing her subjects would

be enough.

“When I passed UPCAT, I didn’t think of uno, I just like ‘Okay, If I pass my subjects that could be fine.’ I thought that I passed UPCAT, the hardest exam in the Philippines. So it’s okay if I don’t rank that high,” she said.

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Jun. 18 (PIA)--Noting the significant accomplishments of the city, Mayor Oscar Moreno stressed the importance of looking beyond boundaries in attaining such as there are no boundaries in health, education, and peace and order.

Marawi coops receive shared service facilities MARAWI CITY, June 18 (PIA ICCC) -- Eight cooperatives of this city can now start processing their own products after the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) provided them with shared service facilities (SSF) in a simple turnover ceremony Monday, June 17.

With the SSFs, these cooperatives whose members are mostly internally displaced persons (IDPs) will embark on garments and dressmaking for Muslim women apparel, commercial bakery, food catering and halal foods, “baur “ (wooden box inlaid with mother pearls) making, palapa production and marketing and concrete hollow block manufacturing.

A total of 32 cooperatives submitted their proposals.

DTI Undersecretary Abdulgani Macatoman urged the IDPs to utilize the machinery for the improvement of the life.

“Sana yung mga machineries, equipment na binigay ng DTI, lahat ng tulong ng ating pamhalaan, huwag natin sayangin. Gamitin ito sa tama at paghusayan para po tayo lahat ay makabangon,” said Macatoman. (“We hope that those machineries, equipment provided by DTI and other government agencies will

be utilized well. Use it for the better and work hard so that you can recover.)

Jardin Samad of Maranao Collectibles Service Cooperative thanked the DTI and TFBM for supporting them.

Samad also shared that with the guidance of the agency, they seek to reach the international market.

“Salamat sa DTI sa tiwalang ipinagkaloob sa amin. Makakaasa po kayo na pagbubutihin namin hanggang kami ay makabangon at makatulong sa mga kapwa,” said Samad.

Sultan Ali Laguindab of NPC Tree Farmers Producers Cooperative also shared that their “baur” (box) making will contribute to the promotion of tourism in Lanao del Sur. He also expressed his thanks to the agency, which, he said has been helping the IDPs since the siege happened.

Laguindab also appealed to the recipients of the livelihood assistance to utilize it properly.

“I am appealing to them to use all equipment for the purpose intended by the government. That will be a

US vows support to PH in territorial row with China

DAVAO City--The Philippine government can bank on the support of the United States to protect its international rights amid tensions stemming from issues over disputed territories in the West Philippine Sea, US Ambassador to the Philippines Sung Kim said on Tuesday.

In a press conference at the Seda Abreeza Hotel in Davao, Kim underscored the need to protect international

rights such as freedom of navigation and freedom of life in light of the recent maritime incident at the Recto Bank in the West Philippine Sea where a Filipino fishing boat was reportedly rammed by a Chinese fishing vessel.

The 22 fishermen aboard the sunken Gem-Ver fishing boat were rescued by Vietnamese fishermen hours after the incident.

“We believe very strongly we all should protect international rights like freedom

of navigation and freedom of life. This is why the US Navy has continued to conduct freedom of navigation operations in the South China Sea. I think it is an important reminder to all concerned including China that the US will continue to take actions to protect international rights,” Kim said.

He said the US government would continue to work with the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) See SUPPORT, page 10

During a press conference at the Seda Abreeza Hotel in Davao City on Tuesday, Kim assured the Philippine government of the US government’s support in the development of Mindanao, most especially the newly established Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).

Mindanao enjoys continued strong interest from American investors who are not “necessarily deterred by our travel advisory,” according to Kim. “Sure they may look at the security situation as a factor in considering whether and where to make investments but I encourage our companies to continue to look at Mindanao as a possible destination,” he said.

On BARMM development, the ambassador vowed the US Government will look for ways to support the region “in any way we can.”

“We have already done some interactions with the Bangsamoro people who are involved in the effort, and we’re hopeful that it will bring long-term stability and benefits to the region,” he said.

Kim also mentioned the presence of a chapter of the American Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines Inc. (AMCHAM) in Mindanao. On its website, AMCHAM exists “to serve the interests of Philippine and American businesses through the participation of members in promoting their long-term objectives, while contributing to the civic and economic development of the Philippines.”

The chamber also “regularly consults with Philippine government officials, agencies and bureaus, as well as business, community and civic leaders.

For this purpose, it maintains standing Committees, each dealing with relevant issues affecting Philippine business and industries.”

Kim added the US government had a long history of both the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and investment activities in Mindanao. He noted American-owned business process outsourcing companies established in Davao City have also contributed in revenue generation of the government and job creation to young Filipinos.

“I don’t have any announce-

ment with regards to travel advisory. But I should mention for any government our top responsibility is to protect our citizens. It’s the same thing for our colleagues in the Philippine government. So, according to the security situation, we will issue a travel advisory and we will continue to look at the situation and see if any updating is necessary,” he said of the travel advisories issued by the US Embassy in Manila.

Last April 9, the US Embassy in Manila warned its people against travel to Sulu Archipelago, including the southern Sulu Sea, due to crime, terrorism, civil unrest, and kidnapping. It likewise advised its people to reconsider travel to other areas of Mindanao for the same reason.

On trade with the Philippines, Kim said the country “enjoys a slight surplus on trade with us.”

“It’s a mutually beneficial economic partnership and has been for many decades,” he said, adding that some US companies – like Coca Cola, Protector and Gamble, GE – have a hundred-year history in the Philippines and continue to do well,” he said. (Antonio L. Colina IV / MindaNews)

Partisan parochial politics still rooted in Tagoloan town WITH a new mayor in Tagoloan town taking over, an outsider may think that divisive parochial partisan politics may finally be on the way out of the municipal hall that was ruled for decades by the Emano clan.

Alas that is not the case with incoming Mayor Gomer Enan Sabio, whose cousin and incumbent Vice Mayor Robinson Sabio is still loyal and in fact is allied with the Emanos.

The acrimonious rivalry between the two men intensified—if it isn’t heated enough already—with the vice mayor’s rumored plans to hold office in either the municipal library or the post office, both of which are outside the Municipal Hall.

Talk of a ‘Cold War’ between the Sabios, both first

cousins, had dominated the shops and homes of Tagoloan folk who were usually largely preoccupied more with local radio drama or TV. Instead of a potential Sabio dynasty, what Tagoloanons can expect from the two men—Gomer Sabio’s father Manuel and Robinson’s father Aristoteles are brothers whose parents were Pio Sabio and Kikay Valdehueza Sabio—is a divided Municipsl Hall.

Which means that the Sabio clan cannot realistically expect to see their own hold on to the reins of the municipal government without some measure of influence total or partial from the Emanos.

Such a perception is being debunked by those close to the two men who

contend that everything is civil between them. Only time will tell if their assertion is true or not.

The offices of the mayor and vice mayor are located within the Municipal Hall and it would be a shame to Tagoloanons if both Sabios cannot achieve a harmonious working relationship to say the least.

It would indeed be quite the source of joy for Sabio clan members from Natumolan to Sta. Cruz and as far as Mojon and Sta. Ana if the two officials put aside their personal and political differences and work together for the common good of Tagoloan.

Instead Don Raymundo Sabio, the patriarch of the Sabio clan, may be turning in his grave and even wake up should he learn of what

is happening with the current generation of Sabios.

Vice Mayor Robinson Sabio started as municipal councilman and became a trusted ally of the Emano clan to the disappointment of the Sabio clan. Incoming Mayor Gomer Enan Sabio served as Barangay Captain of Natumolan and allied with reelected Rep. Juliet Uy of Misamis Oriental’s second district for aid in resolving his community’s garbage problem.

As Barangay Captain of Natomulan, Sabio didn’t collect his honorarium and used the amount to fund the social services in his barangay (village). He sought See POLITICS, page 11

Speaking Out

How did it start?

LAST week, as we paused to celebrate our Independence, I tried to recall how National Day or Independence Day started and came to be observed annually in other countries.

From various online sources, I was able to piece together this historical tableau.

We know, of course, that in the case of the Philippines, this happened in Kawit, Cavite on June 12, 1898. Emilio Aguinaldo proclaimed the sovereignty and independence of the Philippines from the colonial rule of Spain. On that occasion, the newly-designed Philippine flag was unfurled and the Marcha Nacional Filipina was played for the first time.

There was a time, however, (between 1946 and 1965) when we celebrated

Independence Day on July 4. The day marked the termination of American rule in the Philippines.

The US marks its own Independence Day on July 4. On that day in 1776, the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence (framed by Thomas Jefferson) signaling the separation of l3 North American British colonies from Great Britain.

France commemorates the storming of the Bastille, a prison in Paris and a symbol of oppression by the ruling royalty, on July 14, 1789. The attack on Bastille initiated the French Revolution.

Canada Day celebrates the British North America Act of July 1, 1867. The Act established the federal government of Canada and united the British colonies

of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Ontario, and Quebec.

Note, however, that the British maintained some influence until 1982 with the passage of the Constitution Act. Mexico commemorates that day on September 16, 1810, when Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, a parish priest (!) in Dolores, Mexico, issued the “Gritos de Dolores”.

After ringing the church bell to gather the local poor Indians and mestizos, Fr. Hidalgo asked them to rise against the Spanish peninsulars, demanding equality of races and the redistribution of land.

Peru formally proclaimed independence on July 28, 1821, and following the military campaigns of Jose de San Martin and Simon Bolivar, and the decisive battle of Ayacucho, Peru

secured independence in 1824.

August 15, 1947 marks the end of British rule in India and the establishment of a free and independent Indian nation. It also marks the split of the sub-continent into two countries – India and Pakistan.

Indonesia formally declared its independence from the Dutch on August 17, 1945, but it was only four years later in 1949 when the Dutch finally recognized independence.

During the Korean War a South Korean civilian was arrested by the North Koreans and condemned to be executed. But when the young North Korean leader learned that the prisoner was not a soldier but the head of an orphanage caring for young children, he decided to let him live. However, he ordered that the prisoner’s son be executed in his place.

So the prisoner’s 19-year-old boy was shot and killed in front of his father.

After the war ended the United Nations captured this young North Korean leader who had ordered such a terrible murder. He was put on trial for his war

crimes and condemned to death. But before he was executed, the South Korean father whose innocent son had been brutally killed, asked for mercy for the man who had ordered his son’s horrible murder. The father said that the North Korean leader had been young when he ordered his son to be killed and had not fully understand what he was doing. “Give him to me,” said the father, “and I will try to teach him a kinder, better way of life.”

The United Nations granted this rare, amazing request of the father to take the murderer of his son into his own home and care for him. The father’s love com-

pletely changed the heart of that young, murderous North Korean leader into a kind and compassionate man.

The greatest force in the world is real, unconditional love that forgives and shows mercy even to our worst enemies. In fact, it is the only kind of love that has the power to change our human heart. A wise person said: “The best way to defeat your enemy is to make him your friend.”

However, it is not natural for us humans to forgive like that, it’s supernatural.

As the saying goes: “To err is human, but to forgive is divine.” The only way we humans can fully and

EcoWaste Coalition Warns against WORD, Toxic Crayons bought in Ozamiz City inTHE other words

A non-profit group tracking hazardous substances in products and wastes has warned consumers against the use of crayons contaminated with lead, a chemical that is dangerous even at low level of exposure, especially for growing children.

The EcoWaste Coalition issued its latest toxic alert after screening “Ultra Colours Crayons” for lead and other heavy metals using a handheld X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) analytical device.

The group purchased two 16-piece crayon sets from a department store in Ozamiz City last Saturday for just P12.50. As written on the label, the crayons were manufactured

by Caloocan City-based Supreme Wax & Candle and supposedly “non-toxic.”.

The g roup re ca l le d that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2017 had warned consumers against “Ultra Colours Jumbo Crayons” manufactured by Supreme Wax & Candle that were verified to contain lead.

For the “Ultra Colours Crayons” purchased by the EcoWaste Coalition, lead was detected in various colors from 126 to 13,700 part per million (ppm) in excess of the maximum allowable limit of not more than 90 ppm.

Out of 32 crayon sticks,

10 were found to be laden with lead. The yellow, pink, yellow green, and white crayons were found to contain 13,700, 5,556, 5,484 and 4,414 ppm of lead, respectively.

“Children’s products such as toys and school supplies should contain no lead as this chemical is known to harm children’s health even in small amounts,” stated Thony Dizon, Chemical Safety Campaigner, EcoWaste Coalition.

“While lead-containing paint and dust are the most common sources of lead poisoning in children, lead-containing crayons and other lead-containing objects in the home and school environment may also expose children to lead posing serious health concerns,” he said.

The World Health Organization has confirmed “there is no known level of lead exposure that is considered safe.”

According to the FDA, “lead produces a spectrum of injury across multiple body systems. In particular, lead affects children’s brain development resulting in reduced intelligence quotient (IQ), behavioral changes such as reduced attention span and increased anti-social behavior, and reduced educational attainment.”

“Their hand-to-mouth behaviors as well as their in-

nate curiosity predisposed them to put objects in their mouth resulting to unintended exposure to multiple hazardous substances such as lead,” the FDA said.

“Accordingly, to protect them from unnecessary hazards, parents, school teachers and guardians are strongly advised to strictly monitor the children especially when children are engaged in activities wherein adult supervision is required,” the FDA pointed out.

To protect children against lead exposure, the EcoWaste Coalition advised parents to discard leadcontaining crayons and to pick safe toys and school supplies conforming to regulatory standards and requirements.

The group also urged the manufacturer to recall their non-compliant crayons, and for dealers and retailers to stop distributing such unsafe products.

PRRD signs law requiring clean restrooms in transport hubs

MANILA -- President Rodrigo Duterte has signed a law requiring clean restrooms, lactation stations, and free internet in all transport terminals, stations and roll-on/roll-off terminals.

Duterte signed Republic Act 11311 on April 17, 2019 but a copy of the document was released to reporters on Wednesday.

Under the law, the state

“recognizes that the right of every establishment to a fair return of investment carries with it a corresponding social responsibility to provide adequate facilities for the comfort of its clientele.”

“Towards the end, the State shall hereby require the owners, operators, and administrators of land transportation terminals, stations, stops, rest areas, and roll-on/roll-off terminals

to improve their facilities through the provision of free internet services, and clean sanitary facilities,” the law read.

Among the standards for sanitary facilities include providing separate restrooms for persons with disabilities, male, and female passengers; adequate ventilation and lighting; safe, adequate, and running water supply.

There should also be

a flush system; toilet seat with cover; a lavatory with toilet paper, mirror, soap, hand dryer and door lock; a waste bin; and exclusive space for diaper-changing.

Lactation stations should also be private, clean, sanitary, and well-ventilated rooms where nursing mothers can wash up, breastfeed, or express their milk comfortably.

Health care law a big leap towards reforming health care system: NEDA

MANILA -- The country’s chief economist is pushing more reforms to ensure the smooth implementation of Universal Health Care (UHC) law, considered a big leap towards improving the country’s health care system.

Working together to protect health care across Asia-Pacific Manila (ICRC) – Representatives of health ministries, medical associations, academia, military and aid organizations from nine countries have committed to work on ensuring that health care is safe from disruption and violence in the Asia-Pacific region, affirming there is an urgent need to strengthen the preparedness of health-care systems in this regard.

The first regional meeting, held in Makati City from June 13 to 15, gathered 65 participants who reaffirmed their collective responsibility in a declaration to enhance the protection of health-care services from various forms of violence.

While the process needs to be led by States, there are many opportunities for other stakeholders to contribute to the effort.

“Every day, medical personnel, nurses and health responders are confronted with situations of violence and other actions that disrupt provision of health care to those who need it the most,” said Maciej Polkowski, head of the Health Care in Danger (HCiD) initiative at International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). “This can range from deliberate attacks in cases of conflict, to violent verbal abuse from a patient. These regional meetings concentrate on the ground realities in AsiaPacific and are aimed at moving towards improved protection of health care in a very concrete, defined and hopefully, inspiring manner.”

The HCiD initiative was launched globally in 2011 by the ICRC and the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement to improve the protection of health care. It is a multifaceted initiative that encompasses partnerships, advocacy and an operational approach. The recent

Asia-Pacific meeting was organized by the ICRC in partnership with the Philippine Red Cross. It brought together participants from Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Japan, Myanmar, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea and the Philippines.

In the meeting, the participants discussed and shared concrete experiences in the task of making health-care services accessible, safe and free from violence. By adopting the “Manila Declaration on the Protection of Health Care,” they agreed that: Weapon bearers must strengthen their respect for safe and secure delivery of health care through practical measures such as training manuals and standard operating procedures; Authorities must undertake appropriate measures to train and educate civil servants, health-care workers and the public on domestic laws protecting health care; There is a need to strengthen the resilience and preparedness of health-care systems to face attacks, with focus on the physical security of facilities, training of staff to prevent and manage violence and to strengthen coordination mechanisms.

For the meeting’s host country – the Philippines – protection of health care is highly relevant in the southern island of Mindanao due to decades of internal armed conflicts that presented various challenges for health professionals.

EDUKASYONG Pantahanan at Pangkabuhayan as a course has two streams – the TR-based EPP and the entrepreneurbased EPP. Every private school has a choice as to which stream to offer with consideration for faculty, facilities and resources.

Both streams based on the training regulations but the entrepreneur-based EPP embeds entrepreneurship concepts in the teaching of the various subjects.

EPP is geared towards the development of technological proficiency and is anchored on knowledge and information, entrepreneurial concepts, process and delivery, work values and skills. This means that

EPP that works is one which is built on adequate mastery of knowledge and information, skills and processes and the acquisition of right work values and skills. The EPP that is functional is one which equips students with skills for lifelong learning. EPP that is concerned only with mere definition of terms is meaningless and hollow. EPP that is focused on mastery of skills and processes without right work values is anemic and dangerous. An effective EPP is one that is founded on the cognitive, behavioral or psychomotor and affective dimensions of human development.

Therefore, teaching EPP means teaching facts, concepts, skills and values in their entirety.

THE Philippines on Tuesday brought to international attention the need to put people at the center of labor and employment agenda amid transformations in the world of work.

Addressing the 108th Session of the International Labor Conference in Geneva, Switzerland, Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III said that ‘automation in the world of work represents great opportunities, but it can also broaden, if not properly managed, social inequalities and poverty.’

Affirming the importance of human resource, Bello

reiterated that “we want to ensure that no one is left behind and no one is displaced from their respective jobs,” adding that the position is in full accord with the Sustainable Development Goals which the Philippines is committed to achieve.

The Labor Secretary also welcomed the timely release of the Report on Work for a Brighter Future: Global Commission on the Future of Work, a landmark report by the ILO, which outlines the steps needed to achieve a future of work that provides decent and sustainable work opportunities for all.

He also lauded the report for giving primacy to people and the work they do at the heart of labor and employment agenda.

Bello said that the main task at hand is to craft specific policy responses that affirm human incomparability, and assert the importance of tripartism and social dialogue.

“These are among the outcomes we want to achieve and must not overlook as automation, big data, digitalization and Artificial Intelligence and their impact to work,” he said.

As a concrete step, Bello

underscored “upskilling, reskilling, and retooling” as priority strategies to prepare the Filipino workforce.

Bello also enumerated the numerous landmark legislations that the Philippine Congress had passed for the protection of the rights and promotion of the welfare of Filipino workers and their families.

DAVAO CITY -- The recent sightings of a pair of Philippine eagles in the geothermal reservation site in Makilala, North Cotabato, has prompted the Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF) to conduct research in the area.

PEF head for research and development, Dr. Jason Ibanez said the study, in coordination with the Energy Development Corporation (EDC), will run for a year and will be conducted after determining the nesting site of the eagles.

“Our first target is to find the nest and once we find it that’s the time that the research, monitoring, and conservation happens,” Ibanez said over

the weekend, adding the study could potentially expand from three to five years.

Ibanez said they are currently monitoring 37 pairs of eagles with breeding nests in the wild.

The oldest nesting site was found in Mt. Apo in 1972 and in Mt. Sinaka in 1995. These nests are still being used up to this time because eagles are known to maintain the same breeding site across generations, he added.

“The nest must be healthy and intact for the eagles to use because it is important to their reproduction,” Ibanez said, adding close monitoring ensures that nesting sites are protected.

During the last breeding season in 2018, Ibanez said they were able to monitor eight young eagles.

young for two years after the chick is hatched.

Ownership issues stalls Bangkerohan Public Market rehab DAVAO CITY -- The longawaited rehabilitation of the Bangkerohan Public Market will have to wait.

Maribeth Lumactod, chief of the City Economic Enterprises said the city government does not have the proof of ownership of the facility.

She said the Commission on Audit has required the city government to show a proof of ownership if it intends to have the market rehabilitated.

“The rehabilitation of the public market will depend on how fast we can provide its proof of ownership by the city,” Lumactod said.

She said based on history, the lot of the Bangkerohan Public Market was donated

by the Marfori Family to the city government.

However, Lumactod said they do not see the deed of donation.

She said the city can do minor repairs but it cannot do a major overhaul like the Agdao Public Market, in the absence of the proof of ownership.

“There is an allegation that there was indeed a deed of donation but we could hardly find it,” Lumactod said.

She said she has assigned to contract of service worker to focus on the income generating properties of the city government by working on the land titles that the Congressman Manuel Zamora took oath in front of Judge Carmel Grado at the Regional Trial Court Branch 56 in city government owns.

Comval Congressman Zamora takes oath NABUNTURAN, Compostela Valley -- Outgoing Vice Governor Manuel Zamora took oath on Monday, June 17, as the new representative of the 1stDistrict of Compostela Valley to the Congress replacing his daughter and three-term Congresswoman Maricar Zamora.

DAVAO CITY -- The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP)-Davao will have 21 third-year students for its College Education Behind Bars (CEBB) program when the school year opens in August this year, a jail official said Monday.

“We aim to reduce recidivism once an inmate is released from prison,” JO1 Michelle Yian, BJMPDavao community relations service officer Yian said of the program in an interview.

Of the 21 tertiary students, she said 14 are males

and seven are females.

She said two female inmates had been released from jail but were still attending classes held at the two-story building inside the jail facility in Ma-a, Davao City.

ment scholars, have taken up four-year degree programs in computer technology and agribusiness. Most of them were arrested for illegal drugs, she said.

“He has several warrants of arrest for serious crimes like multiple murder and the likes. He has been the subject of police manhunt operation because of his high profile criminal background. Lately, he has been monitored to be engaged in extortion victimizing plantation operators in Bukidnon. With his passing, Bukidnon will be safer,” Santiago said.

Santiago said Lundahan is included in the Philippine National Police (PNP) periodic summary report (PSR), a report containing list of most wanted personalities and their criminal activities subject to immediate police operation.

“A bounty for his arrest has doubled in recent years for the more than a dozen crimes he has committed ranging from multiple murder to robbery,” Santiago said.

He further said, “We have eliminated one notorious criminal with the death of Dencio Lundahan.”

Lundahan leads a criminal group notorious for armed robbery, murder, gun for hire and other crimes whose criminal records fill court dockets since early 2000. “His group have even been monitored to be collaborating with the CPP-NPA terrorists and have recently engaged in extortion,” Santiago said.

Science education and her worldview When asked about how science education influenced her way of seeing life, Estudillo said that it taught her to appreciate the little things and how these make a huge impact. She related this to one’s role in society.

“So I learned that the small things make a big impact and the small decisions you make, make a big impact on other people.

So I learned [that] don’t shy away if you think that you’re doing just a small task because that task may be vital. So be good at what you’re assigned to. Be good at what you’re doing. Slay it,” she said.

Her understanding of science also shaped her beliefs. She learned that life has a purpose just like how every part of an organism was designed for a specific reason and function.

“The body of insects.

Studying these, studying their functions, studying their systems, I realized how difficult it is for life to just happen by an accident,” she remarked.

With her faith, she recognized that every human being has God-given abilities and path to take.

“Every situation that you are placed in, you are placed there for a reason.

Therefore, my worldview rests on pursuing the view of God. Because he’s the one who created me. The one who created us and he’s the one who knows what the creation was for,” she added.

Estudillo’s advocacy In her thesis entitled Antioxidant and Anticancer Potential of Artocarpus Fruit Wastes, Estudillo looked at the possible ways to lessen the fruit wastes generated every year by converting its peels, seeds, and cores into functional foods.

Estudillo will present her study to the Department of Science and Technology – Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOSTFNRI) in July. She hopes that her study will help address food wastage and health-related problems in the Philippines.

In her senior year, she was accepted as an exchange student of the University of Tsukuba in Japan.

Aside from upholding academic excellence, she made sure to get involved in various civic and religious organizations both as a member and officer such as the Rotaract Club of UPMin, UPMin Koro Kantahanay, PSALM Ministry of UPMin, For the Unity and Solidarity of Every Student in UP (FUSE UP), and Let’s Do It Philippines Youth – Davao.
