Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. to discuss published reports that the local business sector suffered P200 million losses following the declaration of Martial Law in Mindanao.

During the meeting, Oro Chamber representative Chris Ivan Lagapa clarified that the losses were not only incurred because of the declaration of Martial Law but because of what happened in Marawi City.

He said the figures were based on telephone interviews with members from May 25 to 29. The losses came from the services sector, he added.

Agusan Sur named as model for agro-forestry nationwide

PROSPERIDAD, Agusan del Sur--The province of Agusan del Sur will be a model of the nationwide sustainable agro-forestry program of which Agriculture Secretary Manny Piñol will initiate as one of his flagship platform.

Infrastructure - Improvement and upgrading of the existing waterworks system worth P77 million; relocation and construction of a new police station and a fire station; improving access to electricity in Sitio Banban and Lower Nangka and provision of street lighting; purchase of dump trucks for efficient garbage collection; and 8. Tourism – created the Municipal Tourism Council, designated a municipal tourism officer, initiated tourism activities that would support livelihood in local silk production and additional infrastructure for the town.

“It is also noteworthy to report that in 2016, the local government has a realized local income of P194,688,204.77 of which P73,827,288 is our internal revenue allocation (IRA).

This means that more than P100 million is derived from local revenue sources. It is a good sign of diligent efforts in tax assessment and the efficient collection of real property taxes, business

permits and licenses fees.

As of May 2017, the Treasurer’s Office has a reported total of P106,395,004.65 in income, a large part of which belongs to the School Education Fund that we will use to support our programs and projects in education and early child care and development,” Mayor Uy said in her speech.

I WISH places in Mindanao which are prone to typhoons and floods are now ready for any eventualities since rainy days are here again. I mean the residents should know where to evacuate when their homes are already floating in the oceans amid floods. Let them be aware what to do to avoid panic, hunger and sickness, especially with their young children. It is always better to be prepared to avoid disaster and deaths. If we noticed, typhoons have already struck some areas in the Visayas and Luzon. Our country is located within the typhoon belt and there is no way we can escape from the furies of several inclement weather every year.

000 I see the airstrikes in Marawi conducted by the AFP was wrong since the government had already troops on the ground. I do not blame the military because they were pushed

by President Duterte to move forward and fast to be ready for the flag ceremony on Independence Day in Marawi. Our soldiers knew what to do and I must suggest that they be given the prerogative to decide relative to air strikes. It was so sad we lost 13 soldiers in

Also, these touching hands of my distressed friend, listening to my lonely neighbor; remembering someone and writing him or her a letter or an email. I join others by helping, working, laughing, playing, singing. I listen to love’s melody.

Salt of the earth: Christian life doesn’t always mean possessions or property. Christian life is doing

something, it’s collecting one’s thoughts. It’s giving and receiving. It’s a hug or a smile or comforting talk.

Christian life means having as Christian acting people in my surroundings.

Salt on earth: Of course, as we all know: too much salt is also dangerous to our health. But if we plan to live without any salt, we might fail to survive also. Do you know, that wars have been waged and nations have been extinguished because of salt. Salt is more than a simple stabilizer.

Before the refrigerator was invented, salt was a miracle of daily life. Salt made foodstuff keep well.

Florante, the brother of cabinet secretary Leoncio Evasco, hailed from Maribojoc, Bohol. He grew up as a sociable and playful child of

a farmer and a nurse; yet his strict parents also imposed discipline. He recalls that his brother, Leoncio, was also gregarious and playful, the reason their parents transferred his brother to Saint Vincent at Maribojoc from Holy Name University.

Both his two sisters--Laura and Maridel--were nurses: the former, a product of Celestino Gallares Memo-

rial Hospital; the latter, an alumna of Cebu Doctors Hospital.

MALACAÑANG ASKS CHED TO CONSIDER SUPPORTING AND IMPROVING BSU-ESCs IN MISAMIS ORIENTAL VICE GOVERNOR JOEY G. PELAEZ warmly welcomed Malacañang’s move which asked the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) to look into the benefits of the Bukidnon State University-External Studies Centers to the poor students from marginalized families in the Province of Misamis Oriental and to consider supporting and improving the program.

become successful.” He and his siblings developed a good study habit and work ethics.

Florante appreciates his days at BSAT. The school trains students to become proficient in technical skills like carpentry, plumbing, electrical repairs and installations, among others.

He studied there because besides the emphasis of the school, his uncle, Florentino Evasco--who used to be a teacher, and later, a principal of the academia —influenced his parents. “I did not think what I would become when I went to BSAT,” he said, “but I was thankful for the skills I learned.”

When it was time to choose a course in college, a diagnostic test showed Florante’s inclination to the teaching profession. There were no communication technology courses at that time. Courses on-demand used to be related to education and engineering.

About agriculture because his family had a farm: it could be an option for him, but job opportunities were rare. So, he took a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Education at Cebu School of Arts and Trades.

“Teaching is interesting,” Florante added, “because one is dealing with the young who must develop their character and attitude.”

“Enjoyable because I meet people from different social classes and it is challenging,” he stressed. He was prioritized in selection when he applied for a teaching job because of his technical field . The brother of cabinet secretary had taught for ten years, then became a head teacher for two years, a principal for almost ten years, and later served as DepEd supervisor for eight years until his retirement.

About how he was promoted: he pointed that it was based on one’s experience and achievements like trainings and seminars attended, and management and leadership skills—unlike the current system where one can just take a test for the higher position.

Florante got an offer for a position after his supervisory work in Maribojoc, but he refused it when he entered politics. He ran for a Sanguniang Bayan post at his hometown and became a municipal councilor for two terms (2010 to 2016).

Marriage is usually a choice for one who wants to establish a family. Florante’s main consideration in choosing a wife was being in the same institution and profession. This could be his view: that marriage is a partnership of equals, with neither exercising authority over the other, but, rather, with each encouraging and helping the other in whatever responsibilities and dreams he or she might have.

Florante once thought of a town-mate fiancé who wanted to go to the US—but

a place he did not want to go at that time. So, in 1975, he married Inocencia Dominguez Evasco--a colleague at Cogon Elementary school.

Florante and Inocencia are blessed with two children: Dr. Elva Evasco-Auza, married to Engr. Jerome Auza; and Eldred Evasco whose wife is Miechell Enad Evasco.

As the brother of cabinet secretary, Leoncio, Florante revealed that he encountered difficulties in handling people who seek audience with his brother. However, knowing how his brother thinks, he screens the kind of issue a person brings and decides if it merits an audience.

As a provider for his family, Florante’s meager salary during the Martial Law years was not a hindrance to fulfilling this role. He and his wife did not rely on debts as many did; they had a passive income from the copra and rice from their farm which supplied for the family. When he supported for his daughter’s medical course, however, he and his wife had programmed a loan scheme until she finished.

“There are many children whose fathers are less affectionate,” he said.

“Sometimes, that happened because of my work. Children need affection.” But Florante, as a father, is more than a thousand schoolmasters. Karen Boyer’s poem for a dad fits him: He never looks for praises…

“Poverty Alleviation of Women and Children with Disabilities in Developing Countries”, explained that the presence of learning institutions in areas where PWDs live can greatly affect their school attendance.

The study is a joint undertaking between PIDS and the Institute of Development Economies Japan External Trade Organization done in Mandaue City and San Remigio in Cebu to assess the condition of women and children PWDs in terms of education, labor market participation, and access to health facilities and other social services.

Results of the research show that SPED schools are

often far from the place of residence of PWD children, which can further explain the increasing number of dropouts in their group.

Citing an example, Agbon noted that only 40 percent of children with disabilities from the poorest population are attending schools in San Remigio compared to a higher number of children attending school in Mandaue City. This, according to Agbon, is due to the lack of teaching facilities in poor municipalities like San Remigio.

The study also revealed that while the local elementary school is currently holding nonformal SPED classes, they are only limited to hearing-impaired children.

Agbon said that mobile SPED schools will encourage children with disabilities to continue and finish their studies.

He also urged the Department of Education to enhance its Alternative Learning System Mobile Teacher Program to cater to all types of disabilities among children.

The study likewise advised government to invest in in-service and preservice teacher education to better prepare teachers in handling children with disabilities and reduce inequalities in schools.

by JTF Marawi to the media, there are now about 225 insurgents who were killed either by airstrikes or by engaging the government troops on the ground, while 208 assorted firearms were confiscated or recovered by the armed forces from the insurgents.

JTF said 50 military personnel had reported to have been killed in action.

“Enemy resistance continues to dwindle and enemy held areas continues (sic) to get smaller as troops advance,” the task force said in its update report over the weekend.

JTF said about 26 civilians had lost their lives as there are still residents who refused to leave their homes, although 1,629 of them had already been rescued by a combined team of military, civil society groups and local government officials.

Out of 96 barangays in Marawi, the JTF has noted only four villages, especially Bangolo and Marinaut, remained as “problematic areas” and where the military has focused its assaults on.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Jo-Ar Herrera, spokesperson of the Philippine Army’s 1st Infantry Division, soldiers are on “clearing operations” in those four villages after troopers managed to retake

some of the strategic points where enemy snipers used to be positioned and inflict casualties.

In these areas, the challenge for the advancing soldiers is the Maute Group’s use of civilians as human shields and mosques as the insurgents’ staging areas and safe havens.

Earlier, the military has assured that they will not attack or destroy the numerous mosques as these are places of worship for the city’s Muslim populace who considered them sacred.

The JTF said General Eduardo Año, the chief of staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, has reiterated his continuing guidance “to put premium on civilian lives, respect for civilian properties during clearing operations and complete discipline among our men in uniform conducting military activities in the area.”

The Speaker said he is not aware what country will fund the construction of the 1,500 - km. railway system, with a cost being placed at $9 billion or equivalent to P445.3 billion but he said, aside from Japan and China, a “lot of countries are offering.”

He said Phase 2 will connect from Tagum City to Butuan City.

The railway seeks to connect all key areas of the island such as Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, Zamboanga, Butuan, Surigao, General Santos, and Davao.

“Just be patient,” he said.

In a press release issued on June 8, 2017, the Department of Tranportation (DOTr) said the first segment will reduce travel time from Tagum City, Davao del Norte to Digos City, Davao del Sur from 3.5 hours to 1.3 hours once it starts operating in 2022.

It said the first segment is expected to not only “make travel faster, but also safer, more convenient and comfortable for passengers as

it will have eight stations, namely: Tagum; Carmen; Panabo; Mudiang (in Bunawan, Davao City); Davao Terminal; Toril; Sta. Cruz; and Digos. A 10-hectare depot will be built in Tagum.”

It added the rail line will be built with a single track, with provisions for future tracks and electrification. It will have six five-car passenger trains with three spare cars, four locomotives and 15 freight cars.

Upon project completion, the DOTr expects the daily ridership of the Tagum-Davao-Digos segment to increase to 134,060 by 2022.

AYOR Oscar Moreno yesterday admitted that his administration is more than ready to take up pressing challenges ahead as he embarks on another year of his second term.

During his annual State of the City Report delivered in time of the city’s Charter Day celebration yesterday at Kiosko Kagawasan, Moreno said that confluence of the growing economic opportunities in the city “have made our efforts doubly challenging.”

“Responsiveness and resiliency demand that the people shall live and work in their community secured with the thought that their city government looks after their welfare to leverage their access to sustainable economic opportunities and at the same time access to improved public service in times of economic growth,” he continued.

Moreno also emphasized that his 8-point agenda for the development of

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Philippines — Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan, Mindanao’s first university, celebrated the 119th Philippine Independence Day as a commemoration of the country’s triumph for freedom and a recollection of its value amid the crisis of terrorism and the consequential declaration of Martial Law in Mindanao.

Within the university gymnasium, Xavier Ateneo students, along with the faculty and administrators,

waved the country’s flag as the hymns of Francisco Santiago and Ildefonso Santos’s Pilipinas Kong Mahal and George Canseco’s Ako ay Pilipino resonated in musical performances.

Wary of Martial Law Succeeding the raising of the flag and the 21-gun salute led by Reserved Officers in Training Corps, XU president Fr. Roberto C. Yap SJ commenced the program by reading the Statement of Five Ateneo Presidents on the Marawi

Situation and the Declaration of Martial Law along with his speech.

“The undersigned wholeheartedly support the members of the Armed Forces and the police who give their last full measure of devotion so that our country may be safe,” Yap remarked.

While this nod is given by leaders of the Ateneo community, they also reiterated the reasons for civilians to be more vigilant and cautious of martial rule.

SM Malls in Mindanao join hands in Brigada Eskwela Monday

ll four SM Supermalls in Mindanao joined hands with the Deparment of Education to help rehabilitate public schools in the island.

Guided by the 2017 theme Isang DepEd, Isang Pamayanan, Isang Bayanihan, Para sa Handa at Ligtas na Paaralan, SM Supermalls recognized its role as a catalyst for development in the immediate communities it serves.

Over a hundred employees from different SM Malls volunteered in Brigada Eskwela, the 14-yearold program of DepEd that aims to improve the learning condition and environment for students for the school year. Brigada Eskwela ran from May 15 to 19 and will recur throughout the year as Brigada Eskwela Plus to ensure continuous community participation In Davao City, 20 SM Lanang Premier volunteers helped clean and repaint classrooms in Lapu-

Lapu Elementary school, while 30 SM City Davao volunteers did the same to classrooms in Kabacan Elementary School.

The same bayanihan spirit brought 28 volunteers from SM City General Santos to Jose Lansang Elementary School where they helped with minor repairs of school buildings.

Dozens of employees from SM City Cagayan de Oro also joined the Brigada activities in full force at the SM and BDO donated one-storey four classroom school building in Lumbia Elementary School to clean up and refurbish furniture and fixtures.

The collaborative efforts demonstrated by private sectors in activities like this pave a bright future for Philippine education.

50 IPs Complete Indigenous Crafts Livelihood Skills Training

ome 50 Matigsalug trainees recently completed a series of skills training conducted

by AboitizPower subsidiary Therma South, Inc. (TSI) and the Aboitiz Foundation, Inc., together with the Department of Trade and Industry – Region XI (DTI-XI).

The trainings, which are part of the ongoing comprehensive crafts livelihood project sp e arhe ade d by T SI, DTI and the Aboitiz Found at ion , ai ms to capacitate a group of local residents in producing value-added products out of their traditional baskets, fashion accessories, and wearables. Members of the Davao Designers Pool of DTI-XI were tapped during the product development process, as well as during the conduct of the trainings.

Your cultural and environmental interventions all these years have been very helpful to the preservation of our tribe as well believe that the moment our culture and environment is lost, the tribe’s reason for existence is also lost,” said MACOEMADDACI President Datu Juanito Mandahay.

“We are very impressed with the quality of these c r a f t s m a d e by o u r partner beneficiaries. We remain committed to help market these products not just here in Davao City and Mindanao, but also nationally and even inter nat iona l ly,” s aid TSI Vice President and Plant Manager Valentin S. Saludes III. The products of the Matigsalug trainees will be showcased during the Mindanao Trade Expo (MTE) in Abreeza Mall in August 2017, as well as during the MTE’s Manila leg in Glorietta Makati and SM Megamall come October.

The project also aims to organize the trainees into a viable community-based

cooperative later this year.

MACOEMADDACI is one of the indigenous people (IP) partner organizations of TSI in the continuing implementation of its Carbon Sink Management Program (CSMP), which aims to plant 1,000,000 trees within 10 years to rehabilitate the ancestral domain of the Matigsalug tribe in Marilog District, Davao City. The planted trees will also help offset the carbon emission of TSI’s 300-megawatt Davao Baseload Power Plant in Toril, Davao City.

“I think we have the responsibility to mirror and hammer our understanding and consciousness for our own people and land, of our own context and situation.”

Designing the stage’s set whereupon performers in traditional garments (reflecting the diversity of Mindanao’s people) danced to folk songs amid a vast array of plants, Savior noted the green props with their roots protruding over their pots as representation of the “uprooted community” that had been displaced from their land due to the crisis.

“The design presents layers of understanding,” he said. As freedom is a

right, he also enumerated several privileges that Filipinos should have apart from the independence gained by their noble heroes. “The masses achieve freedom with the provision of food security, justice, and social welfare, among the many rights they are bestowed.”

Shared responsibility For Senior High School Media and Information Literacy (MIL) instructor Jay Rhen Galagnara, the freedom to post on social media may have its costs.

To practice freedom is also to be considerate of the responsibility that comes with it.

“As an MIL instructor,” he said, “I teach my students to practice [their] freedom of expression and speech by being responsible for what they post online.”

Galagnara further discourages his students to spread fake news which may trigger aggression and the perpetuation of false information, but encourages them to use media to sharpen their knowledge on local, national, and global issues.

Awareness, for XU -

Junior High School prefect of student affairs Joseph Saga, is the key to fully grasp freedom and inspire others to practice theirs.

“Part of my duty is to make them aware,” Saga shared. “Activities like this give the opportunity for the faculty and students to be aware; to be culturally integrated is what we need to inculcate.”

Last month, a significant number of students, members of the faculty, administrators, as well as the university’s alumni volunteered in the Tabang Marawi (Help Marawi) relief operations which deployed more than 3,000 Halal-certified relief goods packed by volunteers in the campus to refugees in evacuation centers.

With the freedom to celebrate the nation’s independence is the opportunity to respond to the call to aid those deprived of this right due to socio-political conflict. As SHS Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) student Jay Edloy put it, “We know how much our freedom means to us and what it can mean for them.”
