No covered court? One of the laborious and expensive tasks in preparing for Graduation or Completion Ceremony is the putting up of a tent, locally called as pala-pala or trapal. This temporary structure is usually built by parents, some teachers and even students themselves for 3-5 days but to be used only for 1-2 hours. In some cases, money is needed for the services of carpenters, hauling of bamboos, payment for bamboo and lumbers, purchase of tent, nails, tie wire and other construction materials. So much effort and money are spent on this structure for which the school will only use for a very short time. But instead of trapal, we can use umbrellas in places where there is no covered court, especially in the rural areas. Simply layout bamboo sticks or lumber in a desired distance and tie umbrellas at the top of these bamboo sticks. The distance shall depend on the angle of the sunlight. The length of bamboo stick shall be uniform at 6 feet or taller depending on the average height of all candidates for completion/graduation. It is recommended that bamboo sticks shall also be uniform in color and strong enough that could not be twisted or bent considering the weight

of the umbrella tied at the top and the strength of the wind. I had this idea when I was the School Principal of Mat-i NHS (Claveria) in 2015. We had done this for the first time on March 24, 2015 during the last Graduation Exercises of Junior High School (JHS). We did it again on March 31, 2016 during the JHS 1st Recognition Ceremony. When I was transferred to Hinaplanan NHS, I introduced this to the teachers and we did it on April 6, 2017 during the 2nd Recognition Ceremony of Hinaplanan NHS. Mat-i NHS continues to do the same. This is a simple act of ingenuity that I want to share to other public schools, especially those situated in the rural areas. In using umbrellas, less labor is needed because students can do it all by themselves and there is no need for a pahina or parents voluntary services. It is not an expensive undertaking because umbrellas can be provided by students. Bamboo sticks are readily available in rural communities and can be acquired for free, if not, at a minimal cost. Rain is not a big threat because it is not pouring heavily and not frequent at the end of March or April as dry season starts.

What to do in case of fire

Images of the burning Resorts World Hotel and the Grenfell Tower (in London) are grim reminders of one of the constant horrors we face today. In the case of Resorts World, three cabinet members who had a late dinner at the casino hotel just missed becoming part of the statistics by a couple of hours. As a routine procedure, fire authorities conduct an investigation of such incidents and come up with recommendations to avoid a repeat of the tragedy. A study of the worst fires in the Philippines reveal that tragedies are aggravated by inadequate fire exits. Overcrowding in public buildings adds to form a deadly combination. Both factors, incidentally, were present in the Ozone disco fire in Quezon City which killed 161 teenage party-goers 21 years ago. At the time of the accident, Ozone, which had a normal capacity of 100 patrons had three times the number of occupants. Worse, the club’s main door opened inward and was effectively shut close when

The building’s evacuation plan does not entail exiting from the building during a fire. Instead, the occupants are supposed to proceed to emergency fire proof shelters which are built every 25 floors. The occupants are supposed to ride out the emergency inside these shelters. Carpets such was those which adorned Resorts World are very flammable materials and they emit a lot of smoke. In the case of the fatal Grenfell Tower blaze, fire authorities blamed another culprit for the swift spread of the fire and the deadly volume of smoke - “flammable aluminum composite cladding that lined the exterior concrete walls.” Aware that just as many die from smoke inhalation as from burns, the DOH has issued these guidelines. DOH spokesman Eric Tayag said when people see smoke or fire, they should immediately leave the af-

In a residential fire which killed the daughter of a prominent politician, escape from the second floor was cut off because of iron grills which covered the windows. One can never be totally prepared for a fire. But here are some suggestions that may help mitigate the effects of a fire. The most common suggestion is to be aware of the location of fire exits. It is noteworthy to mention that at start of any public function at the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, the program host normally announces the location of various exits which could be used in case of emergency. It is also standard procedure now for cinemas to show video clips of proper exit procedures to prevent stampede. Even in planes, flight attendants call attention to the exits nearest the passengers. But how do you exit from a megatall building like the

The Juggler Think a minute…There was a young man who moved from his home in Italy to live in America. He studied juggling and soon became famous all over the world. Later in his life, after years of success as a juggler and performer, he decided to return home to Italy and retire. He sold almost everything he owned and bought a big, expensive diamond. Then he boarded the ship for his home in Italy. One day he was showing a boy on the ship how he could juggle several apples at one time. Soon a crowd

of the passengers gathered around to watch. Then the old juggler got more and more carried away with himself, wanting to impress the crowd. He ran to his room and got his precious diamond. He showed it to the people and explained how the diamond represented his whole life’s work and savings. Then, to the people’s shock and amazement, he started juggling the diamond! At first, he was careful; but each time he threw the diamond higher and higher. Finally, he told his

audience that he would throw the diamond one last time so high that it would disappear for a few seconds. The people begged the old man not to do it, but he wouldn’t listen. So with the confidence of all his years of experience, the juggler threw the diamond so high into the air that it actually did disappear, before it started falling back down, shining and sparkling in the sunlight. Then, just as he was about to catch the diamond, a huge wave suddenly caused the ship to move and lurch forward,

Cebu Pacific dominates Manila-Sydney route The Philippines’ leading airline, Cebu Pacific (PSE: CEB) continues to soar high, capturing the lion’s share for both passenger and cargo traffic between Manila and Sydney in the first quarter of 2017. Data from the Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics (BITRE) of Australia showed that CEB carried over 43,512 passengers, representing 42% passenger market share on the Manila-Sydney route, the highest among the three carriers covering this route. The BITRE report noted that from January to March 2017, passenger traffic between Manila and Sydney totalled 104,446, up seven percent (7%) versus the same period last year. The growth in passenger traffic was dominated by CEB, which carried 16% more passengers from the 37,640 reported in the first quarter of 2016. Load factor for CEB for the ManilaSydney route was at an average 78%

for the first three months of 2017. “We are very pleased to see that the Cebu Pacific effect continues across one of our strongest international markets. Our goal is to make flights affordable, accessible and available to a greater number of travellers. These numbers do not only showcase the Philippines as a flourishing destination, but it also shows our strong commitment to remain and further stimulate our key market in Australia,” said Candice Iyog, Vice President for Marketing and Distribution of Cebu Pacific. Aside from the growth in passenger volume, Cebu Pacific also reinforced its leadership in the Manila-Sydney airline cargo service. Different hybrid rice varieties will be planted following the technologies introduced by the Northern Mindanao Agricultural Crops and Livestock Research Complex (NMACLRC) of DA10. The said model farm will also serve as instructional, research and extension for students enrolled in agriculture courses. The project aims to showcase increased productivity and profitability of hybrid rice production technologies in Northern Mindanao.

Harmonization of the implementing guidelines of the project was conducted with the DA management team headed by Regional Technical Director Carmelita T. Bajarla and the CMU project team headed by Vice President Jupiter Casas at the CMU admin building conference room on June 13, 2017.

ome 50 Matigsalug trainees recently completed a series of skills training conducted by AboitizPower subsidiary Therma South, Inc. (TSI) and the Aboitiz Foundation, Inc., together with the Department of Trade and Industry – Region XI (DTI-XI). The trainings, which are part of the ongoing comprehensive crafts livelihood project spearheaded by TSI, DTI and the Aboitiz Foundation, aims to capacitate a group of local residents in producing valueadded products out of their traditional baskets, fashion accessories, and wearables. Duterte is tired, not ill, just resting, says Palace

The Davao City Regional Trial Court Branch 10 issued an arrest warrant against Lascañas last week over the cases of murder and attempted murder over the killing of broadcaster Juan “Jun” Pala in 2003. Before the arrest warrant was issued by the court, Lascañas was able to leave the country last April. Aguirre said that Lascañas has three warrants of arrest issued against him, noting that he has to be brought to the court to face the charges against him. ”Since he is abroad and since there is no indication that he will return, we are constrained to request the Department of Foreign Affairs to cancel his Philippine Passport,” Aguirre said in a statement. ”I will be formalizing a request with Foreign
