PRESIDENT Ro drigo R. Duterte urged the Bangsamoro people to take advantage of their abundant natur al resources to expedite the economic development of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).

Speaking during the 121st Philippine Independence Day celebration at the 6th Infantry Battalion Headquarters in Malabang, Lanao del Sur, Duterte said the Bangsamoro were free

to exploit the riches of their territory after the Republic Act 11054 or the Organic Law for the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (OLBARMM), the enabling mechanism of the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro, had been ratified early this year.

In his speech, the transcript of which was provided to reporters by the Presidential Communications Operations Office, Duterte mentioned about developing the 288,000-hectare Ligawasan Marsh, the country’s

largest wetland believed to have untapped fossil fuel reserves.

He asked the Bangsamoro people to find partners to “exploit your territory of the riches” and make their territory progressive.

But he said the riches of the region are reserved for the young Bangsamoro people.

MisOr urges sense of nationalism during Independence Day celeb CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- The province of Misamis Oriental has urged individuals to move in one direction in one voice, to have a sense of nationalism to achieve the dream of change.

Gerardo P. Sabal III, provincial board member, Misamis Oriental highlighted the message of working as one to achieve the desired change during the celebration of 121st Independence Day in Misamis Oriental.

He said, “Change comes with a sense of nationalism, not a sense of individualism.”

“If we continue to be individualistic in our fervour for change, change will not come. But if we move in one direction, in one voice the change that we have always dreamt of will become a realization,” he added.

He explained this change is the development that Mindanao is experiencing

right now.

“The island of Mindanao has been given opportunity to change to also be a part of development,” he cited.

Meanwhile, guest speaker Dr. Lorenzo B. Dinlayan III, professor of Bukidnon State University said we cannot prosper if other sectors are left behind.

He explained, one sector that is left behind is the Indigenous People (IP) or the informal settlers.

In his message during the commemoration of 121st Philippine Independence Day, Misamis Oriental Governor Yevgeny Vincente B. Emano expressed his optimism that the liberation we have gained would be an inspiration in the fight against poverty and the limited opportunities so the poor would be freed from hunger and hardship.

As we commemorate the Philippine Independence Day, Gov. Emano urged the Filipino people to respect and salute our forefathers who sacrificed their lives so we will be saved from slavery.

Thousands have laid

their lives so that we may live with the dignity and rights befitting of a free nation.

The governor further said patriotism and the spirit of the Filipino led our triumph against the shackles of slavery and abuse.

“Kung walay kagawasan, wala kita’y kaugalingong pangalan, walay kaugalingong panlantaw, walay kaugalingong dungog, ug walay kaugalingong nasud,” Emano said.

More than 18,00 jobs offered in CDO Kalayaan Job Fair CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- Some 18,924 jobs were offered to job seekers during the 2019 Kalayaan Job fair held at Limketkai Center Atrium here in the city as part of the 121st Independence Day celebration.

Around 5,890 were for local employment from 63 participating private com-

panies mostly from the service, construction, and BPO industries while 16,500 job vacancies were for overseas employment generated from the 22 Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) accredited recruitment agencies. Government vacancies, on the other hand, totaled 18,924.

Cleaners/janitors, construction workers, and call center officers were the top local job vacancies.

Overseas jobs were mostly for skilled workers such as cleaners, staff nurses, nurses, nurse assistants, midwives, restaurant workers, and baristas. Most of the overseas manpower

services job posts were in the Middle East countries.

The government sector included 1,001 job openings of Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA); 53 for Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD); 750 for Philippine Army; and 10,000 for the See JOBS, page 8

Zaldy Ocon’s malfeasance

Public office is a public trust. Public officers and employees must, at all times, be accountable to the people, serve them with utmost responsibility, integrity, loyalty, and efficiency; act with patriotism and justice, and lead modest lives.– The Constitution, Article XI, Section 1E

THE President’s continuing call to rid the bureaucracy of misfits, the arrogant and the corrupt is aimed at dissecting the malfunctions of governance down to local government units.

Corruption, arrogance and misfits in government service are therefore social evils with long term effect on the moral fiber of good governance.

Like drugs, President Duterte sees corruption, arrogance and misfits in

government as pandemic and needs surgical operation with a sense of urgency.

The President reiterated this call during the oath taking ceremony of the elected Cagayan de Oro City officials held at Xavier Estates Country Club.

From his own words, the purging continues. His recent call for resignations of all Philhealth key officials is in effect due to reported mismanagement of the agency’s funds entrusted by the lowly taxpayers.

Indeed, the words of the President are very clear: “they have to go”.

That said, there is now a need for a strong and effective participation of civil society groups to take collective action on the recent spat between re-elected Councilor Zaldy Ocon who

was conspicuously absent during the oath-taking ceremony, and former Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Reuben Canoy, a recognized Mindanaoan icon and supporter of President Duterte.

The Remove Ocon Movement, launched on Independence Day, is an acid test for the thinking Cagay-anons to rid City Hall with corrupt and abusive public officials.

First and foremost, a public official must not be arrogant and onionskinned. Public office is a public trust and therefore, upon assumption of public office, an elected official like Zaldy Ocon must adhere to ethical standards set by the laws of the land.

fabric of this city, the Crusade for Good Government, a volunteer watchdog in good governance suggest that a sensible punishment system must be put in place to serve as the driving force of reforms in the bureaucracy.

In addressing corruption and putting a stop of misfits in governance, the government must create transparency and openness with no arrogance in tow.

The more open and transparent the process, the less opportunity it will provide for malfeasance and abuse.

Welcome developments in Claveria town

MY family and I visited Claveria town in Misamis Oriental over the weekend and I was amazed with what I saw.

As we sped towards Claveria town passing through several barangays of Villanueva town—for travelers it’s a good twohour ride from Cagayan de Oro at a distance of 70 kilometers—I had my fears based on the quality of roads leading to it.

What greeted me on arrival was quite different from my initial expectations.

Later I learned that the road we passed through is known as highway 995 and it can be used as a bypass road leading to Gingoog

City and other towns in Misamis Oriental.

An infrastructure network of roads, bridges and so on is very critical for tourism, agriculture and mass transport and it serves as the foundation for a local government’s development.

Aside from the clean concrete road, the various beautifications made in Claveria town were truly impressive. Villanueva and Claveria towns share boundaries and Villanueva Mayor Jennie Uy and Claveria Mayor Meraluna Salvaleon-Abrogar deserve praise for doing what they can for their respective towns.

Again, good infrastruc-

ture is a platform for development. If there were no good roads leading to Claveria and Villanueva towns, how can we expect more tourists visiting them anytime soon?

Less visitors mean fewer to zero people buying products from sellers in these towns ergo less to zero money pouring into the local economies. As always it is the legislator or the congressman/woman representing said towns that facilitate the release of funds for these infra projects.

lobbying for funds to be allocated to her district for building infrastructure there such as that 995 highway.

If my memory serves me right, then Misamis Oriental governor and now Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Oscar Moreno would always get excited mentioning the Kabulig river and the mountains of Lumot, Sumagaya and Balatucan in Claveria town and the improvements being done there during his Capitol days in the mid 2000s.

Workplace checkup THINK a minute.

Do you like your workplace? Is it a peaceful and productive place to work every day? Just as we need to get a checkup on our body to see if we are healthy, today and tomorrow let’s get a checkup on our workplace, since we spend so much of our lives there.

The first symptom of an unhealthy workplace is frequent complaining. Employees criticize and trashtalk their company, their fellow workers, managers, customers, or their products and services. They also tell their family, friends and others outside the company how bad things are.

A second symptom of an unhealthy workplace is when the employees feel overwhelmed, even hopeless, because no matter how hard and fast they work

they can never finish all the tasks they are expected to do each day. So they must choose either not to do everything, or just rush to get it all finished but not do it well.

Another symptom is jealous competition and conflict between fellowworkers. This gossiping, back-stabbing and bullying is called “lateral violence,” which sadly is a problem in many workplaces.

A fourth symptom of an unhealthy workplace is one in which employees do not feel appreciated and recognized for their work.

The #1 complaint of employees is: “I can do 100 things right and not hear anything about it, but if I do just one thing wrong, they quickly criticize me and make me feel like a failure.” Studies show that most employees

are looking for more than just a paycheck, they want to feel good about the work they do and that they are appreciated at least once in a while for their reliable, quality work.

If you realize your workplace has some of these unhealthy symptoms, why not ask God to help you do what you can to help change it into a healthier, happier place for everyone? Ask Jesus to take charge of your heart and attitude, and He will give you His wisdom, kindness and strength every day to make a difference where you work. ***************** Since we spend so much of our life at our workplace, it is important to see what unhealthy conditions we can start changing to improve our daily lives on the job.

COTABATO City--Three women were arrested in a joint anti-drug operation here Wednesday morning, with the suspects bringing with them four children apparently in an attempt to disguise their operations, authorities said.

Joint operatives from the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (PDEA-BARMM), Cotabato City police and Special Forces elements from the 5th Infantry Battalion arrested the suspects Raihana Mamalangkay Macalimpas, Malvina Mokamad Duluan and Dacel Duluan around 10 a.m. along Governor Gutierrez Avenue near the barter trade area and fronting the gate of the BARMM compound.

According to Direc-

tor Juvenal Azurin, of the PDEA-BARMM, the suspects brought four children in an attempt to disguise their transactions, dealing 200 grams of suspected shabu amounting to P1.3 million.

“Upon confirming they brought the item hidden in a mosquito repellent box, the troops immediately jumped to the scene and successfully arrested the suspects,” he said.

The suspects, in an interview, told newsmen that a man has told them to bring the item to a certain person, which turned out to be planted by authorities to pose as buyer.

The women said they brought the children along because they were reportedly told by a man to bring the suspected shabu, and that they had no idea it would eventually involve an illegal drugs deal. They were report-

edly promised that they will be treated to a famous food store after they bring the item.

But PDEA agents are not buying the suspects’ alibi.

The husband of one of the suspects, Raihana Mamalangkas, was also arrested last year in Pigcawayan, North Cotabato for possession of half kilo of suspected shabu during a summit on the Bangsamoro organic law which he allegedly attended.

He is now detained in a jail in Kidapawan City in North Cotabato.

During its regular session Monday, June 8, presided over by Vice Mayor Raineir Joaquin V. Uy, the 18th City Council enacted an ordinance authorizing City Mayor Oscar S. Moreno to enter into and sign the

Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for Work Immersion Partnership with partner educational institutions.

This covers the collaboration of the parties in the implementation of the Work Immersion Program of senior high school students in the city.

Legislators also approved an ordinance authorizing the mayor to sign the MOA for the internship

program of colleges and higher educational institutions in the city.

Mayor Oscar Moreno said this is consistent with Department of Education (DepEd) Order No. 30 s 2017, the Guidelines for Work Immersion and CHED Memorandum Order No. 104 s. 2017, the revised rules for student internship program in the Philippines (SIPP) for all programs. (SP)

200 foreign traders to join Davao investment conference

DAVAO CITY -- Around 200 foreign investors have already confirmed their attendance to the 5th Davao Investment Conference (Davao ICon) slated on June 20.

John Carlo Tria, executive vice president of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (DCCCII) bared this Tuesday, saying the number is increasing and that the total number of domestic and foreign businessmen could reach 500.

Among the foreign delegates who confirmed their attendance are from China, Singapore, South Korea, Malaysia, and Europe.

DAVAO DEL NORTE -- An Inter-agency Task Force against investment scams will operate in Tagum City this week.

Mayor Allan L. Rellon revealed in an interview basing on yesterday’s meeting of the City Peace and Order Council (CPOC) which he said recommended the creation of such task force through a resolution.

Offhand, Mayor Rellon said such task force would determine the identity and the location of the investment scheme offices, and to know their actual operation and activities vis-à-vis their declared transactions based on issued business permit.

The task force is also expected to submit recommendation to the Office of the City Mayor based on findings made on “research, visitation and inspections” made, he said.

Capt. Maria Teresita Gaspan, DCPO spokesperson, said eight died on the spot, one expired while on the way to the hospital, and two were critically injured. Six of those who died were identified as Jhonnyvee Congcong Ustan, Renato Congcong Lozada, Emily Dionela Viernes, Rabbi Kylle Viernes, Carmen Remoroza Saniel, and Danny San Luis.

STATE-run Social Security System (SSS) tapped nine (9) domestic fund managers to manage part of its Investment Reserve Fund (IRF) worth P7 billion to help improve pension fund’s earnings from investments.

SSS President and CEO Aurora C. Ignacio said the pension fund deployed P1 billion each for three Balanced Fund Mandates, three Pure Equity Fund Mandates, and one Pure Fixed Income Fund Mandate. An investment mandate is an instruction to manage the pool of capital or funds, using a specific strategy and within certain risk parameters.

Earlier, SSS opened the bidding to hire nine local fund managers to manage the P9 billion investible funds which are divided equally to three types of mandate namely: Balanced Fund Mandate, Pure Equity Fund Mandate, and Pure Fixed Income Mandate.

Ignacio said the local fund managers underwent an open and competitive bidding and transparent evaluation process. After the bidding process, only P7 billion was deployed to qualified fund managers.

Under the Balanced Fund Mandate, SSS selected the Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation, BPI Asset Management, and Trust

Corporation and ATRAM Trust Corporation who will each manage P1 billion investible fund. For Pure Equity Fund Mandate, BPI Asset Management and Trust Corporation, Metropolitan Bank and Trust Company, and Philequity Management, Inc. will each handle P1 billion investible fund. Meanwhile, BPI Asset Management and Trust Corporation was entrusted to oversee P1 billion investible fund for the Pure Fixed Income Fund Mandate.

“The SSS management believes that it will benefit from the investment valueadded services of the fund managers such as training, access to proprietary investment analysis and information and access to business analytics,” Ignacio said.

Industry Leaders Maintain Bullish Outlook on the Banking System The BSP has published the Report on the Banking Sector Outlook Survey (BSOS) for the Second Semester of 2018. Survey results show that banks maintain their optimism on the country’s economic prospects as 86.1 percent of respondents expect the domestic economy to grow between 6 percent and 7 percent within the next two years. More importantly, the outlook on the Philippine banking system remains stable for 70.2 percent of all respondents, with

the rest mostly expecting a stronger banking system.

Upbeat projections led more than 72 percent of respondents to expect double digit growth in assets and deposits, while 81.0 percent and 92.4 percent expect loans and profits to grow more than 10 percent, respectively. The upgrade of the S&P Global Ratings Banking Industry Country Risk Assessment (BICRA) of the Philippines also contributed to the optimism.

cial banks (U/KBs) are most eager to expand market coverage with 75.8 percent and 84.4 percent of respondents projecting double digit growth in assets and loans, respectively. Are you easily affected by rumors that you wanted to quit and shut yourself in your house? Or are you emotionally stable (emotional stability is the capacity to maintain ones emotional balance under stressful circumstances.)

I’ve met dif ferent people from all walks of life and it made me realize how stability in work and finances do not guarantee emotional stability. There are so many rich people who are so fond of how rich they are. Rich people who can immediately decide to travel anywhere, shop everything or buy anything they want, yet, they go to bed feeling empty and lonely. There are also people on the other hand of whom, though are not financially blessed but happy. Those people who are contented and happy even if they only have the simplest meal one could ever have. Those people who do not have much of things to show off to the world but have friends and family who love and accept them no matter what. Those people who sleeps soundly at night knowing they did nothing to drag down, belittle or embarrassed anyone.

Emotional stability, does not come with how much finances you could earn everyday or every month. Emotional sta-

bility comes from the peace of mind that helps you get a sound sleep at night. It comes from the real love you get from the family you have built. It comes from the genuine hugs, kisses, concern and bonds of your friends.

It comes from the confidence that no matter how destructive others’ criticism may have, you will never be shaken for you know your own capabilities and potentials better. And for the teachers, like me, emotional stability comes from the satisfaction and rewarding feeling of seeing your pupils learn, use that knowledge in dealing with the real world, and succeed in their own.

With the different activities and things to consider to survive the harsh reality of life, we tend to forget that the essence of living is to live a life with a happy heart.

Being happy despite the many adversities we may encounter, taking life to the best positive way that we can is surely of great help to surpass emotional instability.

Prioritizing the most important individuals or group of individuals and putting their best interest in mind is very helpful as well. And lastly, the time you give yourself to relax and have fun despite the busy schedule will help you keep your sanity and happiness. So what are you waiting for? Go reward yourself with an hour of relaxation and happiness, with the people you love of course!

He also cares for the welfare of the welfare-givers. One of the DSWD Chief ’s major priorities is the regularization of Memorandum-of-Agreement (MOA) workers which comprise the majority of the Department’s workforce.

PNP-12 warns illegal investment operators anew problem, following President Rodrigo R. Duterte’s verbal directive last week for law enforcement agencies to put a stop to the proliferating illegal investment schemes.

The President specifically cited the operations of the Kapa Community Ministry International, Inc., a registered religious group that has been soliciting investments in the form of donations at a monthly interest of 30 percent.

In its defense, Kapa argued it is operating as a religious organization that

is no different from other sects that receive offerings from its members.

Agents of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) conducted a series of raids in the past several days against Kapa, targeting the house of its founder Pastor Joel Apolinario in Barangay City Heights here and offices in parts of the country.

The operations here, which were based on a search warrant issued by the Regional Trial Court Branch 20 in Manila, were

Coca-cola launches roadmap to boost recycling industry

MANILA -- Beverage giant Coca-Cola Philippines launched on Tuesday one of its important commitments to help boost the country’s recycling industry aimed at increasing job generation for Filipinos and consequently reduce plastics in the ocean.

At the Blue Leaf Filipinas in Parañaque City, the company announced its comprehensive blueprint towards packaging sustainability, which targets to collect and recycle a bottle or can for each one they sell and to use at least 50 percent recycled content in their packaging by 2030.

This is the cornerstone of the company’s global vision of a World Without Waste.

DOLE-12 releases P5.5-M livelihood grants to informal workers

GENERAL SANTOS CITY -- The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) in Region 12 (Soccsksargen) released around PHP5.5 million worth of livelihood grants in line with the 2019 Independence Day or Kalayaan job and business fairs here on Wednesday.

Sisinio Cano, DOLE-12 regional director, on Thursday said the grants were received by five local government units (LGU) and a group of vendors, which availed of the assistance under the DOLE Integrated Livelihood Program.

He said the assistance will benefit at least 438 marginalized and informal workers in five localities in the region.

The recipients are the municipal governments of Alamada (PHP1.85 million) and Pigcawayan (PHP665,041) in North Cotabato; Barangay Poblacion, Malungon (PHP992,600) and Paraiso,

Alabel town (PHP587,335) in Sarangani; Tacurong City (PHP996,700) in Sultan Kudarat; and Tacurong Terminal Vendors Association (PHP500,000).

Cano said they turned over the checks and certificates of availment to the recipients on the sidelines of the Kalayaan-Trabaho, Negosyo, Kabuhayan job and business fairs held at the SM mall trade hall here.

He said the grants will fund the implementation of livelihood projects that were proposed by the beneficiaries, through their partner LGUs. “The approved projects were for Yacon wine processing, coffee processing, motor parts and motor servicing store, and water refilling station,” Cano told reporters.

Some of the beneficiaries will receive starter kits of basic implements, materials and initial capitalization for various small business ventures, he said.

It was the second Independence Day flag raising since 2016, following last year’s ceremony, but this year is more significant according to Faisal Ronda, principal of Butig National High School, because the old municipal building, where the Philippine flag was hoisted, has been fixed already.

In February 2016, the first military operation was conducted to rescue the six sawmill workers abducted by the extremists as part of the initiation of those who finished their training.

Four of the six victims were freed but the two others were beheaded. Their headless bodies were retrieved by the military troops during the operation while their heads were recovered at the training area in Barangay Poctan.

The old municipal building was heavily damaged by

bullets when the extremists tried to occupy the government building although they successfully hoisted their black ISIS flaglet.

Abu Dar was reported to have replaced Abu Sayaff leader Isnilon Hapilo, the appointed emir (leader) of the ISIS in South East Asia, who led the Marawi siege.

Among the many attractions in Claveria that my family and I chanced on was the now famed Claveria View Deck at Route 995 in Barangay Lanise. The view deck was inaugurated and opened to the public in February this year.

On the view deck one can see the magnificent beauty of the mountain range that straddles Claveria town. It was a bit windy and sunny at the time and the skies later brought some welcome rainfall to cool the surrounding area.

The view deck continues to draw visitors from for and wide and I don’t mind paying the P5 fee for the toilets which I found to be quite clean. I join the residents of Claveria in praying that more development comes to their town.
