For NIA 10, even with COVID, water is fluid

Maranding irrigation is completed

MARANDING River Irrigation System is located in Lanao del Norte was constructed by the National Irrigation Administration that started in the year 1974 and fully operational in 1981 with an original service area of 4900 hectares but later during operation phase extension area of 354 hectares was added to make the updated service area of 5,254 hectares and firmed-up of 5,061 hectares. There are a total of 3,863 farmer beneficiaries organized into six (6) Irrigators Associations and federated last October, 1999 to Federation of Irrigators’ of Maranding River Irrigation System (FIMARIS) Ever since it became operational, there was no turning back in the life of the farmers reaping the fruits of irrigation with rice production as the major livelihood activity of the people in the locality. It has contributed much to the economic boom in the once sleepy towns of Lala, Kapatagan and its neighboring municipalities also savoured the benefits of the economic progress. Big business establishments which is present only in highly urbanized cities have sprouted in the area and a shopping mall is now under construction at the province ’capital town.

Unemployed persons in R10 rise to 236,000 as of April 2020

The close coordination between the NIA Regional Office and LAMISCA IMO Management with the Provincial Government of Lanao del Norte led by Governor Imelda Q. Dimaporo, Vice Governor Maria Cristina N. Atay, the Sangguniang Panlalawigan and the Local Government Units of Kapatagan and Lala thru Mayor Barry Y. Baguio and Mayor Angel L. Yap, respectively together with the Irrigators’Associations thru its Federation President James Longcob has reached to greater heights giving high morale of the farmers of producing more rice for food sufficiency thereby developing more viable and outstanding Irrigators’Associations However, the momentum was aborted last year when Typhoon Falcon brought flashfloods due to continuous heavy rains hit the province of Lanao del Norte last July, 2019 with the ground zero at Maranding RIS. The rampaging floodwaters overflowed the riverbanks damaging standing crops and irrigation facilities particularly two (2) units of siphon were severely damage coupled with heavy siltation in the main and lateral canals which cut-off the flow of irrigation water affecting 3600 hectares of the See IRRIGATION, page 11

RESULTS of the April 2020 Labor Force Survey shows that unemployment rate in the region registered at 11.1 percent. This is the highest recorded unemployment rate since 2005. Unemployment rate in January 2020 was reported at 3.2 percent while April 2019 unemployment rate posted at 5.0 percent. In terms of magnitude, the total number of unemployed individuals as of April 2020 reached to 236,000, higher than the recorded unemployed persons in April 2019 at 121,000. In other words, there are 115,000 more individuals who are unemployed as of April 2020 as compared to the same period in the previous year which reflects the impact of CoVID-19 economic shutdown to the labor market. The region’s unemployment rate is lower than the national average of unemployment rate at 17.7 percent. The region also posted the lowest unemployment rate among the 17 regions. Employment rate in the region fell to 88.9 percent in April 2020 from 96.8 percent in January 2020. In April 2019, employment rate registered at 95.0 percent.
