Drug surrenderee nabbed in a buy-bust

ILIGAN City--A 29-year old former drug surrenderee was arrested, around 1 p.m.

Friday (June 7) during a joint anti-drug buy bust operation of Iligan City Police Stations 4 and 5 at Barangay Poblacion this city.

LAST May 31, 2019, MV Bavaria, carrying 69 cargo vans containing mixed wastes sailed back to Canada, where the shipments all originated from. Between 2013-2014, 103 mislabeled containers containing waste paper, electronic waste, household waste, and non-recyclable plastic were illegally imported and intercepted in the Port of Manila, and since then almost half of those were already landfilled in the Philippines. Community 2 City to tap agri areas for tourism Monday, June 10, 2019

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- Now is the right time to tap the agricultural aspect to the city’s tourism industry.

Thus said Councilor Jay R. Pascual, chair of the city council committee on tourism aired over a radio program, “Si Bise Mayor Kikand Uy ug ang Konseho,” adding that the city of Cagayan de Oro has a number of agricultural resources.

The councilor cited Sinulom Falls as an example of a possible agri-tourism site with the presence of various plantations like cacao, dragon fruit, banana, calamansi and palm oil.

There are also fruit trees such as mangosteen, lanzones and rambutan and an aviary for honey-producing bees in the area, he cited.

“Ang atong tourism areas makapadani man gud na sila og mga turista sa atong dakbayan. Dako kaayo og ikatabang ang tourism industry kay maka generate man na sya og dugang income para sa atong dakbayan,” the councilor stressed.

“Ships that persist to approach our country despite being told to turn back can be dealt with according to the PCG or PN rules of engagement,” Uy, member of the House Committee on National Defense & Security said.

The solon suggested the forging of bilateral and multilateral agreements on customs measures and intel sharing against garbage and illegal drugs.

MisOcc holds first ECLIP IP Summit OROQUIETA CITY, Misamis Occidental -- Misamis Occidental provincial government hosted the first Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (ECLIP) Provincial IP Summit in a bid to discuss issues and concerns contributory to the problem of insurgency, particularly at the recruitment phase.

The first ECLIP IP Summit likewise aimed to provide IPs an avenue to present their concerns with the national government agencies.

In the summit, Governor Herminia Ramiro expressed her gratitude to the assistance extended by agencies of the government in addressing insurgency and rebellion in the province.

Ramiro said the provincial government has been focused on implementing various development projects including farmto-market roads, school buildings and health centers in remote IP communities

of the province.

She added that the provincial government has been conducting community outreach programs in remote tribal communities to provide IP members with livelihood projects, health services, and educational programs.

“This, as a symbolic expression of our sincere commitment to stay united and work hand-in-hand for the benefit of the cultural communities,” Ramiro said.

The provincial government has undertaken initiatives to implement development programs in IPs communities after the military tagged some local tribal groups as major sources of recruitment for the New People’s Army (NPA).

LtCol John Andrada, 10th Infantry Battalion commander, has noted that IP members have become easy prey for recruitment by the NPA, the armed wing of

Lao wants probe on alleged collection of fees at city cemetery COUNCILOR Teodulfo E. Lao, Jr. is calling for a probe on the alleged collection of P5,000 burial fees at the Bolonsiri Cemetery in Camaman-an.

In his special report during the regular session Monday presided over by Vice Mayor Raineir Joaquin V. Uy, the councilor said he learned about this last week when someone approached him asking for financial assistance for the burial of a relative.

According to the councilor, he advised the person to go to the Barangay Assistance Center for help with regards to funeral services.

“However, they said they already availed of BAC services but what they need most is the P5,000 payment for burial,” he reported.

The amount will reportedly be used to pay for the lot location, labor cost for digging and concreting of the tomb.

P6.8-m worth of ‘shabu’ seized in Lanao del Sur

ILIGAN City--Authorities arrested around 12 noon Friday (June 7) two suspects and seized a kilo of suspected ‘shabu’ in a joint anti-drug buybust operation in Purok 7 Kapigis, Barangay Eastern, Wao, Lanao del Sur. The joint buybust operation was facilitated by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency-Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (PDEA BAR), PDEA 12, 34th Infantry Battalion, Philippine

Army, Wao Municipal Police Station and the Provincial Drug Enforcement Unit (PDEU) of Lanao del Sur Provincial Police Office.

Police Colonel Madzgani Mukaram, chief of Lanao del Sur Provincial Police Office, identified the suspects as Darangji Ombo Angatong, alias Salaudin and Lendi Asiw Mangondacan.

Mangondacan was wounded when he tried to escape and exchanged fire with the arresting officer according to Mukaram.

Police donate school supplies, slippers, water tumblers to pimary pupils

MANTICAO, Mis amis Oriental--The Municipal Advisoy Council (MAC) of Manticao Municipal Police Station distributed last Wednesday (June 5) school supplies, slippers and water tumbler to more than a hundred of primary pupils of Malibato Integrated School in Sitio Malibato, Barangay Upper Malubog of this town.

The advisory council was created to help the Philippine National Police in different activities in the community to bring the police closer to the people.

Every police station in the country has its advisory council as part of the PATROL PLAN 2030.

The giving of school supplies to the children is one of the community outreach programs of the MAC to help the parents of the beneficiaries in buying the needs for their children.

MAC Chairman Luther Asok said the group chose Malibato Integrated School because it is one of the many areas hardly reached with community outreach by some civic organizations.

Arianne, who is diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, had made substantial progress two years after she heard piano music wafting through that same mall and told her mother, my daughter Janice Baisas, that she wanted to play the piano.

On hearing someone play the piano, Arianne wasted no time following the tune with mother in tow. She was headed to the stage when she was restrained from doing so and it took some time and effort from her mother and some sympathetic people to pacify her amid the glances of those who were distracted by her meltdown.

That was two summers ago and much has changed since then. At the time this

article gets published online, she would be walking up the stage for her recital, that same stage she was prevented from setting foot on. Arianne will play among several tunes “Down In the Valley”, “Bridal Chorus from Lohengrin” and the theme from the opera “Raymund the Overture.”

Arianne is part of the CLAZZITALS 2019 Summer Recitals where she is a student. I am overwhelmed with emotion after she invited me and Ronnie to attend her big event, my first time to personally attend her recital. To be honest I am super excited for Arianne; my eyes well up with tears as I write this, to see up close my 10-year-old granddaughter performing to her potential despite her condition.

For those who don’t know Autism Spectrum Disorder is a condition of variable severity in which the afflicted person has difficulty in social interaction and communication and displays restricted or repeti-

tive patterns of thought and behavior.

Amid my excitement, I have my fears like what if Arianne stops in the middle of the song because her mind went blank or some other reason? But I tell you this, there is no doubt in my mind she can do it based on my daughter’s accounts.

She is gifted and she studies in one of the best private schools in Cagayan de Oro City, a school known for academic excellence and character building. I know Arianne is accepted and loved by her teachers and classmates because they understand her condition.

She is accepted not because of her condition but what she is capable of achieving.

She talks in English and finds it hard to communicate in either Bisaya or Tagalog though her Papa Ed is a native Manileno. She loved the 2019 version of the movie Aladdin as well as fried chicken and drive thru meals at McDonalds.

Arianne also loves to draw and loves her toys.

She was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder when she was three years old and she was given immediate medical intervention. To this day I pray to our Almighty God that her condition improves over time.

Years ago, it was so hard coping with her condition especially when she is sick because she could not communicate well yet. Her parents struggled in asking her where she hurt. The Lord answered our prayers and she can communicate to us in English. A little throwback; when Arianne was nearing four years old, we were worried that she may never be able to talk.

And so these troubling questions: Are mobile phones have become too much of a good thing? Are you in panic attack when you forget your phone?

Smart phones have become man’s best friends nowadays, yet for all we know, we are now entrapped subconsciously by the many ‘good things’ our mobile

phones have been providing us.

Mobile phones are one of the phenomenal inventions of man in this era of tech-driven society.

It completely changed the way we interact these days. You can call, send text messages, read emails, play games as well as read and edit documents on the go.

Almost everyone has a mobile phone. Everywhere you go, we see people sporting the latest mobile phone models.

Mobile phones has become part and parcel of our lives. Leaving home without our phones is akin to leaving without brushing our teeth, or combing our hair.

These days of quickies,

everyone owns at least one, if not sophisticated, mobile phone. In fact, even parents have allowed their school kids to own mobile phones because of easy and convenient access wherever they are, anytime, anywhere.

So what are the repercussions of constantly using these devices day in day out? Today, socializing that involves real interaction is very rare to happen. We are reduced to interacting on social platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, or chat applications such as Viber and WhatsApp. While there is nothing expressly wrong with chatting with our friends on these platforms, it can be a problem if it is done at

the expense of face to face interaction.

In a family where every member has a mobile phone and uses it every time they are together, this might cause breakdown of relationships, or worse, disorientation of values within the family.

Ver y often, we hear from colleagues, neighbors, friends or family members and others things they seem to hate. They even criticize other people about their looks or activities during weekends, vacations or off days. Most of the time, gossiping can really easily ruins others’ life.

And where does gos-

sip start? Gossips come about because of envy.

Why not try to love unlovables instead of giving so many negative comments and criticisms? Why not examine ourselves first before criticizing others?

Upon examination of my own life, I’m annoyed when others are late for an appointment and keep me waiting. I really feel angry, when parents speak harshly and treat their children cruelly, when an individual monopolizes the conversation.

Or, when others neglect

the spiritual side of life in favor of temporary physical pleasures.

At such times when I look inward, I hear the words “Thou art the one”.

Then I realize that imperfections I see in others are often my own.

When the Lord looks at us, He sees not only what we a re but what He enables us to become. We can learn not to expect too much from ourselves that we become discouraged.

The grace of our Lord does not change us unless we respond. It can change our

Encouragement is a gift that can literally transform people and circumstances.

Teachers have a lot to do with their students’ motivational level. A student may arrive in class with a certain degree of motivation. But the teacher’s behavior and teaching style, the structure of the course, the nature with students all have a large effect on student motivation.

Students can have increased of motivation when they feel some sense of autonomy in the learning process, and that motivation declines when students have no voice in the class structure. Giving your students options can be as simple as letting them pick

their lab partners, or wherein students can determine their own grading scale, due date and assignments.

If encouragement is indeed the most vital aspects of a child’s social development, very few educators, counselors, and parents fully realize this fact.

Encouragement is desperately needed today. Children and teachers need encouragement like plants need water.

Students perform best when the level of difficulty is slightly above their current ability level. If the task is so easy, it promotes boredom and may communicate a message of low expectations or a sense that the teacher believes the students is not capable of better work.

Thus, teachers play such an important role in a child’s life, sometimes being their only source of encouragement and support. As a teacher, it is important to know the students, their personality, learning styles and academic level, so that it is easy to meet their needs and create the best learning environment possible. The purpose of education is to teach the basics of knowledge and to challenge each individual to learn. The realization that will have the power to make a difference in a child’s life is sometimes overwhelming.

This remarkable fact gives the teachers a stronger purpose – to be a positive role model for the students. Being an effective teachers is truly an awesome responsibility.

A plastics-free school environment

A public high school in Negros Occidental has opened a zero waste canteen to promote a plasticfree culture among its students and teachers.

For me, this is a laudable development. The school’s plastic-free canteen opened on Monday, June 3, the first day of classes this school year. It uses alternative packaging for the meals and snacks it offers to its more than

400 students and teachers.

The wala usik canteen also uses biodegradable, indigenous and reusable materials such as mugs made from bamboo, bowls from coconut shells and plates from banana leaves. Wala usik is a local term for zero waste or nothing is wasted.

The school canteen also aims to promote healthy eating from fresh and local produce and will avoid and discourage processed food

packaged in single use plastic. The transition of their canteen to a plasticfree facility started because single use plastic products are often mismanaged in schools nationwide, posing problems to both the environment and health.

This groundbreaking program equips and empowers students with the tools to create positive, lasting environmental change. Schools are being encouraged to set themselves the target of eliminating their reliance on single use plastics.

Teachers are often the first to spot a learner’s unique gifts and talents while attitude is the primary concern. Becoming a teacher provides an opportunity to nurture and

encourage their learners to appreciate and develop their natural abilities and special interests. They can make all the difference in a learner’s motivation to develop his own gifts and hidden talents.

They help shape a learner’s self-esteem and confidence, as well as helping inspire their career aspirations and attitudes toward school.

In the field of academe, a teacher is very important because they prepare and influence tomorrow’s leaders. Every day, learners learn important lessons about sharing, respect, valuing differences and making ethical decisions. Teachers who can enable their learners to feel important and included will create safe classroom spaces, and the children will model

the behavior that leaders should emulate. The wellbeing of planet Earth depends on having educated, ethical and responsible leaders who know how to solve problems, often communicating across cultural lines.

Moreover, teaching is considered a means for which God used his disciple as an instrument to touch everyone’s lives. Aristotle rightly said, “Those who educate the children are more to be honored than they who produce them; for these only gave them life, those arts of living well.” So teaching is a profession that provides an art of living. It is not only a duty but a moral duty. It is not a profession but a noble service to the world to create a more beautiful and peaceful world.

Gulayan sa Paaralan (Vegetable gardens in Schools)

Gulayan sa Paaralan aims to address under nutrition and short term hunger among public school children. The program is a vital part of the school-based feeding program implemented by the Department of Education (DepEd), through the School Health DivisionBureau of Leader Support Services (SHD-BLSS).

Under the program, all schools are asked to establish and maintain the “Gulayan sa Paaralan” as a source of ingredients for the feeding program.

Pupils are encouraged to take part of the program at the schools taught agriculture in their Edukasyong Pantahanan

at Pangkabuhayan (EPP) in the Elementary Schools and also in the Technology Livelihood Education (TLE) classes in high schools. Vegetable gardening serves the hands on training for the pupils in the field of agriculture.

It further enhances their awareness about health and nutritions. As children lacking in proper nutrients have less energy, both physical and mental, hence are unable to fully participate in class.

To ensure that the program will be sustainable, some localities in the country, agreed that every year they will conduct a contest for the best implementer of “Gulayan sa Paaralan”.

Maxus eyes big leap in sales volume

MANILA -- Maxus Philippines expects to double or even triple its sales volume next year, as it introduced to the Philippine market its flagship models of multipurpose vehicles (MPV) and vans.

“We have a modest target this year. Because it’s only six months, we’re looking at about 500, 600 units.

But we plan to double or triple that by next year with new product offerings,” Maxus Philippines General Manager Reginald See told reporters on the sidelines of the launching of these models.

PRELIMINARY data shows that the country’s gross international reserves (GIR) rose to US$85.02 billion as of end-May 2019 from US$83.88 billion as of endApril 2019. This was announced by Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Governor Benjamin E. Diokno today.

At this level, GIR serves as an ample external liquidity buffer and is equivalent to 7.5 months’ worth of im-

ports of goods and payments of services and primary income. It is also equivalent to 5.1 times the country’s short-term external debt based on original maturity and 3.6 times based on residual maturity.

The month-on-month increase in the GIR level was due mainly to inflows arising from the National Government’s (NG) net foreign currency deposits,

BSP’s foreign exchange operations and income from its investments abroad, and revaluation gains from the BSP’s gold holdings, resulting from the increase in the price of gold in the international market. However, the increase in reserves was tempered partially by payments made by the NG for servicing its foreign exchange obligations.

The traditional Westernized constructivist approach to online teaching will need modifications due to the proliferation of multicultural online classrooms. Instructional designers and teachers must uncover their own unconscious biases to foster a culturally sensitive learning environment.

A formal online setting that incorporates synchronous and/or asynchronous learning opportunities for language learners to actively interact with fellow

learners. In this setting, students develop their language proficiency and gain cultural competence in the target language.

An online classroom is an environment created through use of a learning management system that allows students and teacher to connect either synchronously (real time with teacher and students meeting at the same time or asynchronously with interaction between teacher and students occurring intermittently with a time delay; teacher students

are generally separated by location.)

Nontraditional classroom in which learners and instructors are not in physical proximity with each other. An online class can be conducted synchronously or asynchronously.

An online course is managed and communication is conducted through various electronic methods.

A classroom has no face to face component; all interaction between the students and the instructor – both synchronous and asynchronous – is conducted using a combination of online instructional contexts.

Identifying students’ learning styles

Each teacher has their particular style but so do most students. Teacher must know how their students learn the way they can so that the teacher will have the idea how to teach their students and make them interested on learning. The problems develop when teachers and students don’t match.

You may have noticed that even your children learn differently than you do causing you to question why they’re not as interested or not “catching on” the same way you did at their age.

You may also be wondering why some teachers were ‘’better” teachers than

others or why you like a certain subject over another.

These are actually very important observations. There are different type of learning styles which are; Visual (spatial), Aural (auditorymusical), Verbal (Linguistic), Physical (Kinesthetic), Logical (Mathematical), Social (Interpersonal), Solitary (Intrapersonal).

Your students will most likely not possess only one learning styles exclusively but you may be able to see a pattern in their learning preference. For example, a student who is visual but may also be a very social and verbal learner and prefers to learn especially difficult topic using their primary

skills.

Understanding how your students learn is perhaps the most important part of being a teacher.

Another is learning how to provide opportunities for leaning by the use of this identified learning preferences. You just have to observe every students you have and by this it will help you how to help them to easily learn every lesson you gave to them. Each observation will bring you closer to understand their special gifts and will reveal to you more effective ways to teach them using their preferred learning styles. Thus, teachers help students improve learning skills in the learning styles he or she is most comfortable with.

“Wanted: A Friend”

Recently, I happened to meet a Grade 7 student, John (not his real name) who has a physical disability.

His father, the person who personally takes care of him explained to me that John really wants to be at a regular class in spite of the presence of our school’s Open High School Program (OHSP).

While having this conversation, my mind simply drifted to my seminary experience of working with “differently-abled” persons in L’Arche Chicago. L’Arche is an international organization that seeks to create support networks with people with intellectual disabilities.

At the start of my ministry in L’Arche, I asked myself how people with developmental disabilities perceive and relate with Jesus. This question is important because part of my ministry in L’Arche that time was to help core members (people with disability) deepen their appreciation of and relationship with Jesus. Certainly, before I can help them deepen their relationship with Jesus, I need to first deepen my own relationship with Him. This realization brought me to confront two important issues for Christology (the theology that is concerned with Jesus’ nature and works) that I saw in L’Arche. Among these issues, two seemed to stand out.

The first, which I considered to be the very foundation of how I understand Jesus Christ today, is suffering. Undeniably, one of the characteristics of our humanity is the capacity to suffer. Suffering comes to us regardless of our socio-economic status, race, color, gender, nationality, age, educational attainment, health, and so on and so forth. Nevertheless, circumstances in life make some people suffer more than many others. People in abject poverty or are afflicted with a stigmatized disease or doing a detestable and “immoral” job are oftentimes suffering from severe marginalization and neglect by others, even by those who should be able to understand and accept them as they are. Similarly, several of our developmentally disabled brothers and sisters in society are also abandoned, disowned, and maltreated by their very own families and/or relatives.

Moreover, it is unfortunate that most cultures of the world favor those who are strong, smart,

and successful and loathe those who are weak, unintelligent, and a failure. This kind of culture in turn develops biased systems that aggravate the plight of those who are disabled physically, emotionally, or developmentally. In turn, people with disabilities are continuously discriminated, ostracized, and stereotyped.

This grim reality of the developmentally disabled challenges me to think how the Christian notion of salvation can be translated in such a way that these people will be able to experience it in a more meaningful way in the here and now. This leads me to the second important Christological issue I became familiar with in L’Arche—friendship. Of course, like the destitute, hungry, and the least in Jesus’ time, people with disabilities need to be taken care of—to be fed, given water to drink, clothed, welcomed, visited—but these acts of generosity can be simply too mechanical without friendship.

Today, there are many institutions all over the world that provide services that meet the physical needs of the developmentally disabled persons, yet in many of these places of hospitality, I deem that they still remain isolated, lonely, and disconnected because they are not befriended by their caregivers. In many cases, the caregiver is always in the position of providing care while depriving the disabled person the opportunity to give anything in return.

In L’Arche the story is different. Both the core-members and their assistants live and share life together in a community where there is mutuality. The core-members receive the generosity of the assistants while the assistants also receive the generosity of the coremembers—a perfect symbiosis!

This exchange of generosity leads to a real encounter of two or more persons where boundaries are broken down and the “other” is experienced in a deep encounter.

When this thing occurs, salvation is at hand!

Now going back to John, I hope that his presence in our school will give him the opportunity not only of acquiring good education but also of meeting people who will accept him as he is; consider him as their friend, and allow him to respond to the generosity of others.

Motivating students

MOST teachers intrinsically understand the need to motivate their students but teaching on intuition alone can lead to missteps in student engagement.

Everyone has a gut sense of the importance of a student’s relationship with a teacher. It’s not a scholarly understanding but a human understanding.

Every kid is different.

There are differences in community and culture and

it takes a while for teachers to try to develop a new repertoire for building relationships with kids who are different from the way they were.

That’s why it’s important for teachers to be trained on building strong relationships with students and ways that academic mindsets, sense of belonging and other issues affecting student’s motivation to learn. Cultural divides can hinder teachers who are asked to connect with their

students beyond the narrow confines of the subjects they teach.

A lot of the way that educators build relationships with their students is through their content knowledge. So if you’re a chemistry teacher and you have students interested in chemistry, it’s that shared experience of chemistry that’s helping you build meaningful relationships.

What we think is a much, much better way you build relationships is to understand the elements of purpose that students have.

TLE is one of the learning areas of the secondary education curriculum used in Philippine secondary schools.

As a subject in high school, its component areas are home economics, agri-fishery arts, industrial arts and information and communication technology.

The 2010 Secondary Edu-

cation curriculum allocates 240 minutes per week for TLE which is equivalent to 1.2 units.

However, TLE is required to include practical work experience in the community which may extend beyond its specified school hours.

The technical-vocational TLE is focused on technical skills development in any area.

Five common competencies based on the training regulations of Tesda are covered in the exploraroty phase (Grades 7 and 8): mensuration and calculation, technical drafting, use of tools

and equipment, maintenance of tools and equipment and occupational health and safety.

The specialization phase is from Grades 9 to 12.

The entrepreneurshipbased TLE is focused on the learning of some livelihood skills every quarter so that the student may be equipped to start a small household enterprise with family members. It covers three domains: personal entrepreneurial competencies, market and environment, and process and delivery.

Aside from the Canadian trash, cargos containing garbage from South Korea were discovered in October 2018. And just recently, May 2019, new trash shipments from Hong Kong and Australia were discovered in the port of Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental. The movement of trash is expected to rise as China, once the global recycler, has shut its doors from accepting these wastes in an effort to focus on their domestic wastes.

“As long the Basel Ban Amendment has not been ratified by our government, waste traders will feel emboldened and continue to

view the Philippines’ opendoor policy to wastes as a welcome mat for dumping.

It is high time the country removes the welcome sign to these exploitative waste traders, we urge President Duterte to slam the door shut on waste trade and immediately ratify the Basel Ban Amendment,” San Juan added.

“BAN Toxics believes that preventing waste imports before it happens is equal in measure in the exercise of political will, as is wrestling for the waste’s return. Ratifying the Basel Ban Amendment is a work towards minimizing the risk of rich countries trashing our country. It is the necessary step to further defend our national dignity and protect the nation’s health and environment from waste global trade,” explained San Juan.

She is a sweetheart to everyone especially her cousins Kuya Sam, Ate Tating and Jacob. She is always shielded with our love and attention and now that she is 10 years old she is taught what life could be outside home and school and she is a fast learner.

She adapts immediately and we teach her life skills daily so she can become independent. If I may ask, where are we now as a society in dealing with people like Arianne?

I learned that there are already schools or therapy centers that can handle autism cases and I expect there would be more of them in the future. I salute Mayor Oscar Moreno, the City Social Welfare Office and the local Department of Education (DepEd) for directly addressing the problem.

Years ago, I would invite the group of Mrs. Bobo Abellanosa and Mrs. Layug with the special education teacher at City Central and discuss these issues and matters on autism to create public awareness. I never thought I would be dealing with this later in life. But I think much work remains to level up public awareness and education on caring for children with autism.

I remembered the time when I was with Arianne at a mall and she kept making noise about something she wanted, repeating it enough that she caused a scene and attracted a lot of people’s attention. In the US there are people trained to handle children with special needs.

The funny thing though is that her English advantage is sometimes our disadvantage. I tell you this, while we were at Cogon market to buy fruits and vegetables the vendors would raise the prices every time they hear Arianne speak in English.

They assume of course that we were loaded with dollars.

Still today, Friday afternoon, Arianne gets her chance to showcase her talent and appreciation of music to an audience. I have a gut feel that she can do it and this is only the beginning. Every person has the right to be protected against violence and abuse, and your children are no exception. As parents, you do all that you can to shelter and keep your children safe from harm.

But it is a matter of time before these children grow, and you will no longer be able to keep a watchful eye on them all day. Such is the case when they begin to go to school. It is for this reason that the anti-bullying act has been established by the Philippine government.

Among the biggest fears of parents, and one of the reasons why many consider home-schooling, is that their children might be bullied while within school premises.

Sadly, such cases do occur, both in the Elementary and

in High School, and even in College.

As of 2013, with the implementation of the anti-bullying act, schools have become better able to protect their pupils/ students against an act of abuse from their peers.

Below are some of the laws on children and on bullying: · Republic Act 10627 (Anti-bullying Act of 2013) – Signed into a law in September 2013this seeks to prevent and address bullying in Elementary and Secondary schools. · Child Protection Policy – DepEd Order No. 40, Series of 2012 institutionalized Zero Tolerance against any form of violence against the child and provided for the establishment of a Child Protection Committee (CPC) in all public and private schools.

· Republic Act 7610 (1992) or the Anti-Child Abuse Law – RA 7610 r the Special Protection of Children against abuse, exploitation and discrimination. Act provides special protection to children from all forms of abuse, neglect, cruelty, exploitation and discrimination. · Presidential Decree No. 603 – The child and youth welfare code or PD No. 603 was signed in 1974 by then President Ferdinand Marcos.

It states the importance of the child, his rights and responsibilities as well as the role that the state, school and his parents play in promoting his general welfare. · Republic Act No. 9344 or the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act of 2006 by then President Gloria MacapagalArroyo.

Educate special needs of students

Learning disability impact the way the students are able to process and understand information.

An ideal teachers must understand that students with special needs such as learning disabilities needs to be taught differently or need some accommodations to enhance the learning environment. Not everyone learns it the same way.

For students with special needs, maintain a healthy balance of structure and unstructured processes is important. Hearing instructions or following directions can be made difficult. As

all children learn different ways, it is important to make every lesson as multi-sensory as possible. Students with learning disabilities might have difficulty in one area, while they might excel in another. It is also necessary to make your lesson plan creative and students with special needs will appreciated the opportunity to use their imagination or try something new.

Teaching special needs children can be stressful and paper work can make even the most cheerful people grumble a bit. But there are moments that can make the job very

day and were even exported to other countries.

CEST: Empowering Women on Round Mat Production “Bisag kuti ang pagbuhat ani (round mat) proud kayo mi sa among nahimo ug nakat-unan human sa training” – curving a sweet smile, Ms. Molina Bayug uttered these words after the 3-day training on Mat Weaving in Talakag, Bukidnon.

Molina was one of the weavers who attended the training on the innovation on Mat Weaving. With her eagerness to learn, she weaved her own designed round mat made of “tikog” (Sagittaria sagittifolia Linn.) and “sudsud” (Juncus fistulosus Guss.) which were provided to them.

For Molina, weaving is her means to earn a living. She had started weaving mats more than 5 years ago. Traditional mats are the only products they have before, which were sold from Php 137.00 per span (known as “dangaw”). These mats, commonly known as “banig” were sold house to house around their community since they do not have a permanent display area.

From weaving and selling mats, Molina able to support the needs of her family including sending her 3 children to school.

“Kami nalipay gayod nga niabot ang tabang sa DOST kay kung wala pa dili mi makakat-on og buhat ug uban pang mga produkto nga mas nindot pa sa among naandan”, Molina said.

With the project entitled, “Innovation on Mat Weaving: A Project Kasaligan for the Women of Talakag, Bukidnon” under the Community Empowerment thru Science and Technology (CEST) program of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) - X through PSTC - Bukidnon, Molina along with the local women weavers were equipped with the new innovation on mat weaving. The women weavers were able to enhance the mat designs and produced globally competitive and marketable products.

Aside from mats, they learned to weave bags, placemats, hats, among others. A total of 20 housewives attended the training which five (5) were Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from the Marawi siege.
