MEDINA, Misamis Oriental – The Provincial Tourism Office of this province has expressed elation over the recently concluded 3rd Ginataan Festival, calling the performances of the contingents to the Street Dance and Tableau Contest “vibrant, jubilant and resilient” during this town’s 71st Araw ng Medina and 70th Araw ng Parokya celebrations, being held from June 24 to July 5, 2019. Atty. Jeffrey Saclot, pro-

vincial tourism officer of Misamis Oriental, said the festival is “a very good start as the Province of Misamis Oriental prepares for the Kuyamis Festival held every January.” He also conveyed the delight felt by Misamis Oriental Governor Bambi Emano in Medina’s highlighting of coconut (lubi in the vernacular) through its Ginataan (coconut milk product) Festival, aligning with kuyamis’. As a gesture of jubilation, Gov. Emano added up the cash prize

intended for the winners in yesterday’s competition. Saclot said festivals, like the Ginataan Festival, helps in the promotion of the province’s culture and tourism. “Rest assured that the Provincial Tourism Office will support other towns that will venture into tourism developments,” he added. Atty. Saclot, who chaired the board of judges, expressed satisfaction over the performances of the seven contingents that participated in both the street and field competitions, saying their

performances were “vibrant, energetic and resilient with a feeling of never-surrender” despite the rains during the competition. GenSan put on alert for floods, storm surges GENERAL SANTOS CITY -- The city government is closely watching several low-lying areas and coastal communities due to the possible occurrence of major floods and storm surges in the wake of the onset of the rainy season. Dr. Agripino Dacera Jr., head of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, said they have partnered with the barangay councils and other concerned government agencies to properly monitor areas that are highly prone to weatherrelated calamities. He said at least six barangays are being monitored by their office due to possible heavy flooding. These are Barangays San Isidro, Lagao, City Heights, Buayan, Baluan and portions of Katangawan. “These barangays are the usual recipients of run-off water from (higher areas) in Barangays Conel and Mabuhay,” he told reporters. The official said the local government already addressed the problems in some of these barangays due to the implementation of major drainage projects along with the national government these past years. Child laborers’ PWD, solo parents receive DOLE livelihood starter kits CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY --The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE)-X awarded livelihood starter kits to 216 parents/guardians of child laborers region-wide under the DOLE Integrated Livelihood and Emergency Employment Program (DILEEP). Financial assistance was also released to 25 beneficiaries by the Cagayan de Oro Field Office, June 11 at the DOLE Activity Center, 3F Trinidad Building. The same assistance was also given June 12 to 15 beneficiaries in Camiguin, 20 in Misamis Occidental, 25 in Misamis Oriental, 111 in Bukidnon, and 20 beneficiaries in Lanao del Norte. BARMM inks agreement with Save the Children PH

PSA-X to conduct July 2019 survey on labor force, poverty indicators CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) in Northern Mindanao is set to conduct the July 2019 Labor Force Survey (LFS) and the 2019 Annual Poverty Indicators Survey (APIS), July 8-31 across the region. Around 37 hired statistical researchers will be deployed across the region to conduct the interviews to 2,568 systematically and randomly selected sample households identified as respondents. The LFS is a quarterly nationwide survey of households which aims to gather data on the demographics and socio-economic characteristics of the population and provide a quantitative framework for the prepara-

tion of plans and formulation of policies affecting the labor market. Specifically, the LFS serves as a tool in measuring the distribution of household population 15 years old and over by employment status - employed, unemployed or underemployed. It is also used to determine various employment characteristics such as industry, class of workers, nature of employment, and basis of payment. The APIS, on the other hand, is a rider survey to the July round of LFS. It is the 13th in a series of poverty indicators survey conducted nationwide since 1998. MARAMAG, Bukidnon -- After four years of studying in Central Mindanao University (CMU) here; 21-year-old Edy Rose Tayab completes the bachelor degree in agribusiness management recently. Life has not been easy for Edy Rose of Purok 17, Barangay Butong, Quezon, Bukidnon. She was born with a congenital deformity. She has no feet and no left hand. But Edy Rose did not let her disability get in the way of achieving her dreams. She excelled in her class while in high school and pursued her dreams to finish a degree in college. “I want to prove myself that I can do what normal people can do,” claimed Edy Rose who admitted that she couldn’t avoid comparing herself to her classmates. Having no feet, Edy Rose uses her underdeveloped lower limbs without crutches daily. ADS (or IDS) – Alternative Distribution System or Internet Distribution System includes the Internet and other non-GDS electronic channels for hotel distribution. AI (and VR): Not quite hospitality terms, but it is important for hoteliers in the 22nd century to get

DAR turns over P334-M rural projects for farmers and IPs of M’danao DAVAO CITY -- Agrarian reform beneficiaries (ARB) and indigenous people (IP) in Mindanao will soon enjoy greater economic opportunities after the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR), in partnership with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), turned over various infrastructure and crop and food production projects in support of the country’s rural development program. of support services include solar dryers, farm-to-market roads, bridges, communal irrigations, potable water systems, and production of rubber, coffee, abaca, pili, rice and corn. SHANGHAI -- Information and communications technology infrastructure and smart devices maker, Huawei, is bringing in innovative technology to the Philippines to benefit from the application of digital transformation. Vice President Daniel Guo said here that the company is now in partnership with the two telecommunication giants in the Philippines to rollout the 5G technology in the country. Guo added that Huawei is also ready to partner with the new telco player, which include Chinese firm China Telecommunications Corp., for future projects in the Philippines. The focus currently, we are trying to help operators to improve the telecom services for the Filipino. MANILA -- Factory gate prices surged in May, mainly boosted by the remarkable increase in costs of furniture and fixtures, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) reported on Tuesday. The PSA said the Producer Price Index (PPI) for manufacturing rose 2.7 percent in May 2019, faster than the 1.5-percent growth during the same period in 2018 but lower than the 3.6 percent in April 2019. It attributed the upturn to increases of 11 major industry groups with furniture and fixtures and non-metallic mineral products posting a double-

digit increment of 47.9 percent and 11 percent, respectively. L e at h e r pro du c t s , which declined by 13.7 percent, led the nine industry groups that posted annual decreases. Month-on-month, PPI slightly decreased by 0.02 percent in May 2019 from previous month’s 0.4-percent decline. Davao City’s well-loved lensman passes away DAVAO CIT Y -- Wellknown and well-loved Dabawenyo photojournalist Renato “Rene” Bernardino Lumawag passed away early Monday (July 1) evening after years of battling prostate cancer, he was 74 years old. A former broadcaster and radio deejay, Tatay Rene as he is endearingly called among younger media and photography colleagues, first dabbled in photography when he got his first camera in 1979. His photos of the deadly landslide in Mt. Diwalwal in 1985 started his career in photojournalism. He served as chief pho-

tographer of several newspapers in Davao City, in 2016, one of his favorite subjects, Mayor Rodrigo Duterte became President where he served in the Presidential Photographers Division. Apart from photojournalism, Tatay Rene was also active in the local photography community where he was one of the founding members of Camera Club of Davao. He has mentored many established and newbie photographers, hobbyists and enthusiasts. He is considered as an icon in the community known for his selflessness

and passion towards his photography craft. His old photographs of early media coverages in the 80’s and the 90’s is popular for its touch of nostalgia and history. In 2009 along with photojournalist Keith Bacongco they mounted the Remember When Photo Exhibit which featured several historic photographs taken by Tatay Rene in the 1980s and 1990s. You and I live in an age where we’re starting to be impacted but we’ve spent a lot of our lives not really having interacted with AI. We’re also adults that have some volition and agency. For children, that’s different. Whether it’s the learning algorithms powering YouTube Kids content, the smart toys which listen and keep track of every interaction of their little consumers or the educational robots that can soon replace teachers in the

classroom, they are already multiple instances of children being surrounded by AI-enabled products that provide guidance, suggestions, company and fun. By doing so, all these tools and toys collect huge amount of data regarding their behavior – data that can be used in turn by manufacturers and developers to tailor their offering and get kids to use them more and more. To what effect though? Teaching kids at school the basics and the limits of AI technology is also a way of giving them the tools to protect themselves from the excesses and abuses that can happen in that very same educational environment.

The PDEA chief added that Fabiosa positively sold Dimethyl Tripticase worth P200,000 to PDEA’s undercover agent during a buy-bust operation implemented by PDEA against the suspects. COTABATO CITY -- The city government of Kidapawan in North Cotabato province announced Wednesday the start of a bus route that will serve passengers of the Soccsksargen Region and Maguindanao province in the Bangsamoro autonomous region. Kidapawan Mayor Joseph Evangelista said that starting July 5, 2019, the Yellow Bus Line (YBL) company will start transporting passengers from Kidapawan going to General Santos City via M’lang and Tulunan in North Cotabato; the towns of Buluan, Paglas, and Mangudadatu in Maguindanao; the towns of President Quirino and Tacurong City in Sultan Kudarat en route to Tantangan, Koronadal City, Tupi and Polomolok in South Cotabato to General Santos City, and vice versa. “The opening of new public transport route also signals the opening of the city to local investors,” Evangelista said in a radio interview Wednesday.
