Pinays warned of ‘I love you’ scam

CAGAYAN de Oro City-If it’s too good to be true, it’s probably a scam, said a Bureau of Customs-10 (BOC-10) official, referring to the latest scheme from fraudsters who are engaged in swindling individuals of their hard-earned money.

The BOC-10 has warned the public anew not to fall for the so-called “internet love scam” which has already victimized quite a number of individuals in the past years.

Also called as the “I Love You scam,” this criminal activity refers to a supposed romantic bond between a Filipino woman and a male foreigner that developed through chats on social media.

These single or divorced foreigners, mostly Caucasians, are usually seeking a special relationship with Filipinas.

A few weeks into their relationship, the foreigner would promise his Filipina girlfriend or fiancée to send her gadgets and other imported items.

Seized ‘ammo’ in Oro intended for Marawi CAGAYAN de Oro City–– It is very likely that the thousands of high-powered ammunitions confiscated by authorities here recently could be for use of the local terrorist group in Marawi City, a police official said.

Investigators are not ruling out the possibility that the 8,000 rounds of live bullets are intended for the Maute Group whose members are fighting the government forces in Marawi.

The conflict has already displaced thousands of residents while hundreds of civilians, soldiers and insurgents were killed, and has turned Lanao del Sur’s capital city into a warzone.

Contained in eight boxes were 6,000 cartridges of 5.56mm for M16 assault rifle and 2,000 pieces of .30 caliber bullets.

The ammunition cache, which arrived here from Manila a few weeks prior to the Marawi siege, were found by the police in a warehouse of cargo forwarding company in Barangay Camaman-an, this city, based on the information given to them.

PDEA chief: govt nets P82.5b worth of illegal drugs in Year 1

Authorities seized a total of P82.52 billion worth of illegal drugs during the first year of the Duterte administration compared to P4.8 billion seized during the last year of the Aquino administration, Director General Isidro Lapeña of the The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) said Fridaty at the Mindanao Hour Press Briefing here.

Lapeña made a comparison on the achievements between the Duterte administration’s war on drugs on its first year and the last year of the previous administration.

Of the total drugs seized, the PDEA chief said police confiscated 2,446 kilos of shabu valued at P12.62 billion compared to 820 kilos valued at P940 million seized during the last year of President Benigno Simeon Aquino’s term.

Lapeña attributed the increase in confiscations to the intensified anti-drug campaign of the current President who vowed to address the drug problem of the country “in three

to six months” during the campaign for the May 2016 Presidential elections.

Duterte in September extended his self-imposed deadline to another six months and later said the campaign would go on until the last day of his term.

As of June 28, Lapeña said the drug war resulted in 64,397 police operations which nearly doubled from 36,466 operations of the previous President’s last year in office.

drug addicts surrendered and arrested 86,984 drug suspects and 302 government workers involved in illegal drugs.

He said the authorities discovered nine clandestine laboratories, including two mega shabu laboratories, and dismantled 152 drug

dens.

Lapeña reported 57 policemen were killed and 150 were wounded during operations.

Despite criticisms from different human rights organizations here and abroad, the PDEA chief said they will continue the Duterte administration’s drug war, noting that at least 48 percent, or equivalent to 20,126 barangays out of the total 42,036 barangays in the country have been affected by drugs.

He said National Capital Region (NCR) has the highest drug affectation at 97 percent of its barangays but they have cleared 3,677 barangays of drugs in the region.

“Of course these are the figures, what we want to do is to be able to accomplish these figures… translated into something our people will feel in the grassroots.

We have shifted to barangay clearing program because this is where the drug problem thrives,” he said.

He also pointed out that the government’s law enforcement agencies are trying to address the demand side of the drug menace.

He said Duterte administration’s Inter-Agency Committee on Anti-Illegal Drugs has created a fourcluster approach in dealing with the drug problem – enforcement, justice, advocacy, and rehabilitation and integration.

He said this is a better approach because it will deal with drug problem on all fronts, from supply to demand side.

He said the cluster on rehabilitation and reintegration will be handled by the Department of Health and Department of Social Welfare and Development where they are treated and trained on new skills “so that they can be provided with jobs, become productive citizens of the society and join the mainstream society.”

He said the advocacy will be handled by the Department of Interior and Local Government, Philippine Information Agency, and Department of Education to reach out to the vulnerable sectors in the communities like the youth in schools and barangays.

Hate speech

Besides fake news, hate speech is the second big problem with social media.

It has been a long time overdue, but finally German lawmakers have approved a controversial law that would impose higher fines on social media companies like Facebook, Twitter or YouTube for failing to swiftly delete posts deemed to exhibit hate speech.

Under the new legislation, social media companies have 24 hours to remove posts that obviously violate German law and have been reported by other users. In cases that are more ambiguous, Facebook and other sites have seven days to deal with the offending post.

Iligan City- Amid to the crisis that the local government of Iligan is now facing, the local government under the administration of Mayor Celso G. Regencia conducted public hearing regarding the new rates proposed by the Integrated Bus and Jeepney Terminal Management Board (IBJTMB) regarding terminal fees both the East and West Integrated Bus and Jeepney terminals and new charges of violations are as follows: Proposed terminal fees for Integrated Bus and Jeepney Terminal- West (formerly IBJT southbound): FX Marawi will now be paying (P35.00), S ar a o ( 3 5 . 0 0 ) , A r m a c (35.00), D4D (50, 00), Small Bus (50.00), Big Bus (80, 00).

A year after: Duterte scores big in war against hard drugs Monday

DAVAO CIT Y -- The administration of President Rodrigo Duterte has scored big in its all-out war against hard drugs since July 2016 when it hit the target of bringing down the number of users and affected areas in the country.

This was according to Philippine Drug Enforcement Agenc y (PDEA) Director General Isidro Lapena, who reported the one year accomplishment of the Duterte’s campaign against hard drugs.

PDEA is the lead agency in the Duterte administration’s campaign against drugs Lapena said the government hit its target of bringing down the drug affectation by 30 per cent.

He said this has reduced to 20,126 barangays from

42,036 when they took over.

NCR has the highest affectation at 97 percent.

To this date, there are now 3,677 cleared barangays for the first year of the Duterte administration.

The relentless campaign against hard drugs also resulted to the decline in the number of users.

The President last year said there are an estimated four million users in the country.

According to Lapena, the number of users translates to PHP120-billion drug industry.

“If that is not reduced, then ‘yung PHP120 billion drug industry na ’yan will always be something that drug syndicates will always get into it,” he said during the Mindanao Hour at C3 Hotel here Friday.

The drug surrenderers totalled to 1,308,078.

The campaign since President Duterte took over, Lapena said the total number of operations conducted reached 64,397 which is 77 percent more than what the previous administration conducted with 36,466 operations.

The operations resulted to the arrest of 86,984 persons suspected involved in drugs. This is higher by 364 per cent compared to the previous administration which recorded on 18,766 drug personalities arrested.

The drug operations left 3,171 drug suspects who were armed and fought with operatives.

WHEREAS, due to the impending closure of Integrated Bus and Jeep Terminal (IJT)-Southbound at Camague, this body on February 8, 2017 adopted City Ordinance No. 17-6566, entitled; “An Ordinance Temporarily Transferring The Operation Of The Integrated Bus And Jeep Terminal-Southbound Camague To The Football Field Of The Defunct National Steel Corporation (NSC), Barangay Suarez, Iligan City And Provided Funds Thereof.’; WHEREAS, since building a bus terminal from scratch, albeit makeshift one at NSC Ground require substantial amount of time and funding, to accommodate the displaced PUJs, Vans and other passenger vehicles in the IBJT-Southbound, the city government and traffic enforcers, this body on February 22, 2017 adopted City Ordinance No. 17-6572, entitled; “ An Ordinance Establishing The Temporary Routes Of All Passenger Vans And Public Utility Vehicles (PUVs) Plying Marawi-Lanao Del Norte-Lanao Del Sur-Iligan City Routes, Going To And Exiting From The Integrated Bus And Jeepney Terminal (IBJT) Northbound, As Proposed By The Iligan City Bus And Jeepney Terminal (IBJT) Board WHEREAS, City Ordinance No. 02-4256 or the “New Traffic Code of Iligan City” has created the Iligan City Traffic Management and Engineering Board (ICTMEB) or Board whose one of the functions is to: “Recommend to the City Council the routing of common carriers operating in Iligan City in so far as it forms part of a comprehensive traffic management scheme”; WHEREAS, in order to fully prepare the IBJT-Northbound of the arrival of dozens of displaced vehicles from the IBJT-Southbound, the IBJT Board has prepared the traffic scheme inside the IBJT-Northbound; WHEREFORE, on motion of Member Eric M. Capitan, duly seconded by Member Jesse Ray N. Balanay; BE IT RESOLVED, AS IT IS HEREBY RESOLVED, by the Sangguniang Panlungsod of Iligan City, that the following City Ordinance be hereby ADOPTED and APPROVED:

CITY ORDINANCE NO. 17-6575 AN ORDINANCE ADOPTING THE ILIGAN CITY BUS AND JEEPNEY TERMINAL (IBJT)-NORTHBOUND TRAFFIC SCHEME AS IDENTIFIED BY THE ILIGAN CITY BUS AND JEEPNEY TERMINAL (IBJT) MANAGEMENT BOARD Be it ordained by the Sangguniang Panlungsod of Iligan in its session assembled, that: SECTION 1. There shall be ADOPTED, as the same is hereby ADOPTED the Iligan City Bus and Jeepney Terminal (IBJT)-Northbound Traffic Scheme as identified by the Iligan City Bus and Jeepney Terminal (IBJT) Management Board.

SECTION 2. Repealing Clause. All previous ordinance, executive orders, rules and regulations or parts thereof which are inconsistent with this ordinance are hereby repealed and modified accordingly.

SECTION 3. Separability Clause. If, for any reason or reasons, any part or provision of this ordinance shall be held unconstitutional or invalid, other parts or provisions hereof which are not affected thereby shall continue to be in full force and in effect.

SECTION 4. Effectivity.- This Ordinance shall take effect ten (10) days after the publication of a local newspaper.
