Ceb launches Zamboanga -Cotabato, CdeO routes

he country’s leading airline, Cebu Pacific, has launched its new routes -Zamboanga to Cotabato, and Zamboanga to Cagayan de Oro -- starting July 26, 2017.

The new service routes using the Cebu Pacific’s 72-seater ATR allows passengers from Western Mindanao (Zamboanga Peninsula) to directly fly to Cotabato City and Cagayan de Oro City The ATR 72 will fly three times weekly (Monday, Wednesday, Friday) from Z amboanga City international airport to Cotabato City’s Awang, Maguindanao airport, and four times weekly (Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, Sunday) to Cagayan de Oro City’

Ford Motor Company Appoints New Managing Director for Ford PH Ford Motor Company has announced the appointment of Bertrand Lessard as managing director, Ford Philippines, effective August 1. He will report directly to Mark Kaufman, president, Ford ASEAN. Lessard will replace Lance Mosley, who is repatriating to the U.S. after six years in the Asia Pacific region. In his new role, Lessard will be responsible for continuing to drive Ford’s momentum in the Philippines, which included the company’s all-time best quarterly sales performance reported earlier this month.

Lessard was appointed interim managing director at Ford France in

March 2016 and helped Ford maintain its firm position as the number two imported brand in the market, as well as oversaw the launch of the Mustang, which has become the country’s best-selling sports car.

Prior to this, Lessard served as general sales director, Ford France, where he oversaw an initiative to improve relations with the nationwide dealer network though enhanced process efficiencies and communications. Before his posting in France, Lessard served as general manager, Quebec Region, at Ford Canada for four years, where he was responsible for operations in province, including overseeing a network of 80 Ford dealers.

From 1999-2009, Lessard served in a number of leadership

roles within the Ford Canada organization, including national director of after-sales service, sales and service director for Eastern Canada, as well as led a successful restructuring of the Ford and Mercury dealer networks.

Lessard began his career as a service technician at a Ford dealership in his home province of Quebec, Canada in 1976, and eventually joined Ford at its Canadian headquarters in Oakville, Ontario, as warranty claims analyst in 1984.

In 1985, he returned to the Quebec regional office and served in various roles in aftersales, sales and then as assistant regional sales director. In 1994, Lessard was appointed director of advertising for the dealer network at Ford Canada’s Oakville headquarters

Ford Philippines Kicks off 10th Year of Driving Skills for Life Program Ford Philippines recently kicked off the 10th year of its global Ford Driving Skills for Life (DSFL) program, a United Nations-recognized training initiative that educates drivers about smart and safe driving skills to help minimize road accidents and promote fuel-efficient driving.

The kick-off of this year’s DSFL coincides with the implementation of the Department of Transportation’s AntiDistracted Driving Law, which similar to Ford’s DSFL, aims to promote safe and disciplined driving among motorists to keep roads and passengers safe.

“We’re proud to be celebrating the 10th of DSFL in the Philippines, and to continue helping raise awareness about driver and road safety, as well as the dangers of distracted driving,” said EJ Francisco, AVP, Communications, Ford Philippines.

This year, Ford is planning for at least 1,500 drivers to

participate in the DSFL training sessions. A specific focus this year will be on public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers such as bus, jeepney, school bus, and taxi drivers, recognizing their role as motorists is critical in ensuring that roads and passenger journeys are safe.

DSFL is also expanding this year to cover key areas and locations nationwide such as Rizal, Pampanga, Baguio, Batangas, Laguna, Cebu,

and Davao.

“We’re expanding the program to reach more drivers around the country and instill the importance of driver discipline and road courtesy,” explained Francisco.

At this year’s kick-off, Ford is partnering with Uber Systems Inc. by providing DSFL sessions for around 200 Uber drivers from greater Manila.

According to eyewitness accounts, the full-scale attack was signaled by the pealing of the Balangiga church bells and the blowing of conch shells.

Company C suffered 48 dead and scores were wounded. Only 4 survived unscathed. The survivors fled to Basey.

The Filipinos suffered 28 killed and 22 wounded but were able to capture 100 rifles and 25,000 rounds of ammunition.

American retalation was swift. An American gunboat bombarded Balangiga the following day (September 29). Then, the 11th Infantry in Basey, guided by the American survivors of Balangiga, rushed to the town. They caught and executed 8 Filipinos on the spot at the town plaza. The 11th Infantry then put the church and the whole town of Balangiga to the torch.

The soldiers also took back as “war booty” 3 bells from Balangiga church as well as a 400-year-old British Falcon cannon. One bell, the smallest, is now kept at the 9th Infantry Regiment headquarters in Camp Red Cloud, South Korea. The two other bells and the cannon are now at the 11th Infantry Regiment headquarters at Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

What happened during the succeeding months may have been the pre-cursor of My Lai in South Vietnam decades later.

Gen. Jacob H. Smith ordered his men to reduce Samar to a “howling wilderness” and to kill all Filipino

males capable of bearing arms, including children above 10 years old. Smith’s troops even went further by shooting all farm animals on sight.

American historians place the Filipino casualties at 2,500. Some historians place the death toll at 50,000.

The latter figure, however, appears severely bloated because the 1904 census showed Balangiga’s population at a little less than 5,000. At no time between 1904 and the present did the town’s population exceed 21,000.

Regardless of the true casualty count, the brutality with which the retaliation was waged by the Americans was enough to raise an outcry in the United States.

Smith and his top officers were court martialed. But just like what happened to the perpetrators of the My Lai massacre decades later, Smith walked off with no more than a slap on the wrist. Smith was merely admonished and forced to retire from the service.

Over the years, the return of the Balangiga Bells (never mind the cannon) has become the object of several concerted actions here and abroad. President Fidel V. Ramos made the initial request to his counterpart President Bill Clinton.

To freedom-loving Filipinos, the bells symbolize a huge victory in the fight to defend independence. The bells, thus, rightfully form part of Filipino cultural heritage.

A welcome move was initiated in 2015 by a group of US-based Fil-Ams to rekindle interest in the recovery of the bells. The group – The Committee for the Return of the Bells – has sponsored the production of a very touching video, narrated by Actor Danny Glover – explaining the significance of the bells to Filipinos.

In a surprise announcement, during last Monday’s SONA, President Duterte provided the movement an unexpected and welcome boost.

His demand, in no uncertain terms, for the return of the bells definitely caught the attention of the US Ambassador to the Philippines Sung Kim who was in the gallery.

O ve r- a l l, Pre s i d e nt Duterte’s SONA received mixed reviews, ranging anywhere from 5 to 10. Even if only for sheer dramatic effect, this particular demand, as far as I am concerned, rates a 9, or even a 10.

The Juggler

Think a minute…There was a young man who moved from his home in Italy to live in America.

He studied juggling and soon became famous all over the world. Later in his life, af ter ye ars of success as a juggler and performer, he decided to return home to Italy and ret ire. He s old a lmost everything he owned and bought a big, expensive diamond. Then he boarded the ship for his home in Italy.

One day he was show i ng a b oy on t he ship how he could juggle s e v e r a l ap p l e s at o n e time. S oon a crowd of the passengers gathered around to watch. Then the old juggler got more and more carried away with himself, wanting to impress the crowd. He

ran to his room and got his precious diamond. He showed it to the people and explained how the diamond represented his w h o l e l i f e’s w or k a n d savings.

Then, to the people’s shock and amazement, he started juggling the diamond! At first, he was careful; but each time he threw the diamond higher and higher. Finally, he told his audience that he would throw the diamond on e l a s t t i m e s o h i g h that it would disappear for a few seconds. The p eople b egged the old m an n ot to d o it , but he wou ld n’t listen . S o with the confidence of all his years of experience, t h e ju g g l e r t h re w t h e d i amond s o h i g h i nto the air that it actually did disappear, before it

started falling back down, sh i n i ng and sp ark l i ng in t he sunlig ht. Then, just as he was about to catch the diamond, a huge w ave su d d e n ly c aus e d t h e s h ip t o m ove an d lurch for ward, causing the juggler not to catch his diamond, which fell into the ocean and sunk, lost forever.

What a sad story. To risk and lose everything you own and have worked f o r a l l y o u r l i f e . Ye t some of us are just like that juggler. We’re very c on f i d e nt i n ou r ow n strengths and abilities.

We want to be in control and live life our own way, even though our Maker has clearly shown us that the only way to really live successfully is His way. The only way to stay satisfied and safe is the

way Jesus Christ showed us. Yet, we keep juggling with our own priceless life just one more day.

But we ne ve r k now when our life will suddenly end—and we will have lost our eternal life and suffer forever.

U.S. and PH Gov’t Experts Develop Training Course on Underwater Crime Scene Investigation Manila, July 26, 2017 — The U.S. Embassy sponsored six Filipino maritime law enforcement experts to attend a curriculum development workshop on underwater crime scene investigation training in San Diego, California, from July 17 to 20, 2017. The workshop is part of a larger P25 million U.S. government initiative to strengthen underwater crime scene investigation training programs for Philippine maritime law enforcement agencies, through partnership with the Port of San Diego Harbor Police Department and the U.S. Department of State Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement (INL).

JULIANNE Cobayan of Cagayan de Oro City and Rundy Boy Dantes of Misamis Oriental both celebrated their third birthdays last Thursday.

So what’s so special about these kids? Both were christened as the 100 millionth babies of the republic three years earlier upon being born.

Because of this privilege, the two were checked by a government paediatrician, being handed down vitamins by the Department of Health (DOH) and given nutrition counselling by the National Nutrition Council (NNC) in a ceremony last July 27 at the Population Commission (Popcom) 10 office.

Gupit said it is the thrust of the agency to monitor these babies.

“POPCOM staff are assigned to visit the residence of these symbolic babies so that services on proper nutrition, complete immunization and comprehensive health care and other socio-economic system are provided to them,” he said.

It may be recalled that on July 27, 2014, the population in the country turned 100 million. POPCOM 10 then conducted a regionwide search on the symbolic baby to represent hope and challenges of every Filipino.

Their birth was a call to make everyone count in development by ensuring that each child is able to live a healthy, productive and livable environment, Gupit said.

Build!” program, a sufficient and steady manpower is vital to ensure proper infrastructure building and industry development, the country’s trade chief has said.

During the Philippine Construction Human Resource Forum 2017 on July 19, De-

partment of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Ramon Lopez urged industry players to help the government institutionalize human resource (HR) development in the construction industry.

“A well-designed compensation and benefits plan could be of great help in attracting, motivating and retaining talents in the industry,” said Sec. Lopez.

With the strong demographic fundamentals of the country, DTI aims to utilize the country’s labor force capacity to meet the massive labor requirements in anticipation of the surge of infrastructure projects in the coming years.

Duterte blames rich miners for destroying poor Filipinos’ source of livelihood President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday warned well-heeled miners who supposedly destroyed the environment and suggested that they pay back the poor whose livelihoods were affected by destructive mining.

During the 26th anniversary of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology in Camp Aguinaldo, Duterte at mentioned his former Environment Secretary Gina Lopez who conducted

a mining audit and ordered the cancellation of 75 mining contracts.

“I have to solve the mining impasse. Mining impasse. I’m warning the rich. Nakita mo ‘yung bukid na pagung-pagong na and I do not even see a single tree planted. And the devastation doon sa mga palayan, wala na, hindi na sila makapagtanim. Mga fishpond nila, it’s all poisoned by…” the President said.

Duterte lamented the situation of those who lost their source of livelihood because of mining.

“So one of these days tatawagin ko ang mga mayaman at ‘yung mga mahirap. Makinig na lang kayo. Tao man kayo, anong tingin mo dito? Sirain mo ‘yung palayan niya, paano sila mag-survive? Ikaw, sige ka diyan kutkot nang kutkot.

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, -- The City Council committees on health and sanitation and health insurance, on education and on roads and traffic management jointly proposed the creation of a Technical Working Group (TWG) that will study the possible partnership between the Department of Education (DepEd) and the city government on canteen management and operation.

This was agreed during the joint committee meeting in relation to the proposed ordinance regulating ambu-

lant vendors doing business within 50-meters from the school premises.

During the meeting, lawyer Laurence Del Puerto, representative of Department of Education, said pursuant to DepEd Order No. 8, all school canteens should be duly managed by administration or by the canteen-operated Teachers Cooperative.

He said school canteens should not sell food items that have high content of sugar and salt such as junk foods and other beverages.

Foods must have Pinoy seal, he added.

Councilor Reuben Daba, vice-chair of the committee on health, asked the DepEd about the possibility of including ambulant vendors in the Bottom-Up-Budgeting (BuB) program, considering that ambulant vendors secure business permits and undergo a series of health training from the City Health Office.

Ayala Corporation’s net income expanded 20 percent in the first quarter of the year to P6.9 billion driven by the robust results of its banking and real estate businesses, as well as the solid earnings of its emerging businesses in power and industrial technologies.

Strong equity earnings from its businesses, which climbed 18 percent year-onyear to reach P8.5 billion, lifted the conglomerate’s performance during the period. This was led by equity earnings from the Bank of the Philippine Islands and Ayala Land, which expanded 27 percent and 18 percent, respectively. In addition, Ayala’s emerging businesses posted higher equity earnings, particularly AC Energy and AC Industrials, expanding 26 percent and 22 percent, respectively.

On a quarter-on-quarter basis, Ayala’s net income climbed 9 percent from the fourth quarter of 2016 on the back of the robust performance of its banking business.

“We are pleased to see our businesses sustain their positive performance in the first quarter. As a group, we continue to search for value-accretive opportunities not only to create new sources of financial growth, but also to remain relevant to our stakeholders. As our core businesses maintain their growth trajectories, we are encouraged by the progress of our emerging businesses. In particular, our power, infrastructure, and industrial technologies units are pursuing strategic opportunities to scale up and over time bring significant value to our portfolio,” Ayala President and Chief Operating Officer Fernando Zobel de Ayala said.

Real Estate Ayala Land posted P5.6 billion in net income during the period, 18 percent higher year-on-year on the continued expansion of its property development and commercial leasing businesses.

Property development revenues jumped 21 percent to P19.7 billion, backed by the residential, office for sale, and commercial and industrial lots segments.

Residential revenues grew

11 percent to P16.6 billion, supported by higher bookings and project completions across all residential brands.

Bookings from Alveo’s Park Triangle Tower and Avida’s Capital House, both in Bonifacio Global City, as well as the Alveo Financial Tower in the Makati Central Business District, drove the 26 percent increase in office for sale revenues to P1.5 billion. Meanwhile, commercial and industrial lot revenues expanded tenfold to P1.6 billion, fueled by lot sales in Vermosa, Arca South, and Naic.

Mall and office leasing revenues continued to improve, reaching P7.1 billion, up nine percent from a year ago. Ayala Land booked P3.8 billion in mall leasing revenues during the period, a 12 percent increase yearon-year. This was driven by the contributions from newly opened malls, namely: The 30th in Pasig City, UP Town Center in Quezon City, South Park in Muntinlupa City, Ayala Malls in Legaspi, and the addition of Tutuban Center in Manila.

Office leasing revenues rose eight percent to P1.5 billion on higher average rent in established offices and contributions from newly opened office spaces. Hotel and resorts revenues were stable at P1.7 billion, up four percent from a year ago.

In the first three months of the year, Ayala Land deployed P21.8 billion in capital expenditures. Of this amount, 46 percent was used for the completion of residential projects, while 37 percent was channeled into commercial leasing projects. The remaining amount was allocated for land acquisition and the developments of Ayala Land’s existing estates.

across mobile data, home broadband, and corporate data segments drove Globe Telecom’s topline growth in the first three months of the year, which improved four percent to P31 billion. Mobile data revenues climbed eight percent to P10 billion, with this segment now representing 42 percent of total mobile revenues. Datarelated services accounted for 53 percent of Globe’s total service revenues during the period.

Despite this improvement in revenues, the higher depreciation, interest expense, and costs related to the strategic acquisition of San Miguel’s telecom assets weighed on Globe’s net income, which declined 13 percent to P3.8 billion in the first quarter. EVERY July, Philippine schools celebrate Nutrition Month. Malnutrition of Filipino children is addressed. And it is just timely that DOH and the World Food Programme released new guidelines just this month on how to address malnutrition, including the ones experienced by outof-school children.

The new guidelines are consistent with the All for Health towards Health for All agenda of DOH and is aimed at totally eradicating malnutrition by 2022.

Each year, a typical Filipino consumes 110 kilos of plain rice, 4.3 kilos of eggplant, 2.9 kilos of squash, two kilos of ripe papaya, 9.3 strong partners and contributors in shaping and building Monkayo. He stressed that the warehouse is built ensure the properties and stocks of the municipality are taken care and assure the public that the government properties are not put into waste. The fencing project is constructed to secure the government offices and the children playing in the municipal plaza, said Mayor Gentugaya.

Mayor Gentugaya emphasized that these projects are people centered, as it is his promise of running a government that is responsive to the needs of his people and followed his mantra of “Dayag na Pagdumala” or transparent form of governance.

Mr. Reyes said, Zamboanga city “fast becoming Cebu Pacific’s new hub” in the country from the existing six hubs that includes the cities of Manila, Cebu, and Davao.

“Zamboanga City has most connections within Mindanao. Zamboanga is the only city in Mindanao that can claim to have such connections,” he said.

At present, Cebu Pacific operates a direct flight from Zamboanga City to Davao City, and Zamboanga to Sanga-Sanga in Tawi-tawi.

These are on top of the existing daily flights of Zamboanga-Manila and Zamboanga–Cebu.

Reyes said, as they consider this city as an emerging hub for its operations, and with entry of new 50 brand new aircrafts, Cebu Pacific is looking at establishing new routes to directly connect this city to other Asian countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei.

“As we take delivery of those aircrafts, we will continue to add places and destinations. Nationally, we keep on studying where else can we link, especially dynamic cities such as Zamboanga,” he said.

The move is also to position Cebu Pacific to take advantage of the integration of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN).

In previous years, independent airlines attempted to service Zamboanga Kota-Kinabalu and Zamboanga-Sabah routes. The operations, however, failed to sustain.

Reyes said the 50 brand new aircrafts that will enter Cebu Pacific fleet has already started this year to

“Mercury and other deadly chemicals are poisoning not only residents of Compostela Valley but also nearby areas,” said Pimentel, adding the DENR should stop the use of the banned metal to spare the lives of the people in Mindanao.

Pimentel said he also backed the President’s position to stop the extraction and exportation of mineral resources to other countries for processing abroad and importing them back to the Philippines as consumer goods at higher prices.

He said mining companies should heed the President’s invitation for them to establish manufacturing processing plants in the country so that the raw materials are transformed into finished products with higher sale values.

Pimentel also asked the DENR to monitor the full compliance of mining firms in the quick clean-up, restoration and rehabilitation of all areas damaged by mining operations, especially in areas close to watersheds and forests.

“We want to be the enabler to connect people in Zamboanga. With these new options, people from Zamboanga will no longer travel long hours by land,” he said.
