Policeman nabbed for ‘extortion’

GENERAL Santos City-Police operatives arrested one of their colleagues here on Monday afternoon for allegedly extorting from a sister of a police applicant in exchange for favorable results in the required neuro-psychiatric and medical examination. Lt. Col. Aldrin Gonzales, public information officer of the Police Regional Office (PRO)-12, identified the suspect as Master Sgt. Arnel Abellera, 46, a member of the Regional Health Service (RHS)-12 based at Camp Fermin Lira here. He said the suspect was nabbed around 1 p.m. by elements from the Philippine National Police-Integrity Monitoring and Enforcement Group (PNP-IMEG) in an entrapment operation at a Jollibee branch in Crossing Makar, Barangay Labangal. Gonzales said Abellera was caught in the act of mulcting P50,000 from complainant Phoebe Maraguit, sister of a police applicant from Makilala town in North Cotabato. Based on Maraguit’s complaint, the suspect supposedly asked for such payment to ensure that her sister will pass the neuro-psychiatric

DAVAO City--Individuals from various sectors have expressed positive views on the fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA) of President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday, even as they voiced optimism that the administration’s visions for the next three years would be fulfilled. Pilipino Banana Growers and Exporters Association (PBGEA) executive director Stephen Antig said “the President’s instruction to certain agencies and Department Secretaries are laudable”. “Hopefully improvements will really be introduced” before the President’s term ends in 2022, Antig said. However, Antig voiced reservations on the creation of new agencies such as the Department of Overseas Filipino Workers,

pointing out that the country already has agencies for OFWs such as the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA). “Creating a new office might just be a duplication,” he said. Dr. Adrian Tamayo, public relations head of the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA), described the President’s plans and programs as “viable, practical, and implementable within the remainder of his term.” “In most of his words and statements, his care for his people is evident,” Tamayo said.
