ALAYBALAY CITY, Bukidnon— Tribal evacuees at the provincial Capitol ground here decry Provincial Governor Jose Maria Zubiri’s indifference to the plight of the Lumad and Indigenous People (IP) in Bukidnon.
About 78 Lumad families evacuated to the provincial ground in Malaybalay for fear of being caught in the crossfire between the communist rebels and the government forces in the area, a spokesperson of the Lumad said Thursday. Datu Jimboy Mandaguit, the Secretary General of the Kalumbay, an umbrella organization of various Lumad associations in Northern Mindanao, said that the provincial government of Bukidnon has not acted on the complaint filed by
the family of a 14-yearold Manobo girl who was abducted July 17, 2017. Oro Chamber to host Minbizcon 2017
THE 26th Mindanao Business Conference (Minbizcon) set to be held in Cagayan de Oro City in September this year has hit a snag with at least ten USbased companies withdrew their earlier commitments to participate in the 3-day gat her ing of business stakeholders in Mindanao. Ruben Vegafria , chair of 2017 Minbizcon, said the US Embassy has just informed the 2017 Minbizcon organizers that ten USbased firms which are members of the American
Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines begged off citing security concerns. But still, Vegafria is upbeat. “Since we were informed two months ahead of the scheduled event, we were able to secure commitments from other companies to fill in the vacant slots. In short, nothing was lost,” Vegafria said. Private businesses prohibiting their staff to come to Mindanao are not new since the Marawi City siege started in late May. In
June, the biggest culinary competition in this part of the country known as Kumbira cancelled the entire event after Manila-based major sponsors have refused to participate. The three-day conference starting September 6 will be graced by President Duterte on the third day. Other slated speakers include Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez, Agriculture Secretary Manny Piñol, Trade and Industry Secretary Ramon Lopez, Philippine Economic Zones Authority
(PEZA) director-general Charito Plaza, Russian Ambassador Igor Kuvaev. There will be technical discussions and business matchings in such topics as homegrown technologies, building a disaster-resilient e c on omy, p o s it i on i ng Mindanao’s agriculture s e c tor, among ot hers. Sixty buses will also be ceremonially launched as Go Mindanao tour buses during the occasion. Minbizcon is held yearly in Mindanao, alternatively See expo, page 9
