PH’s biggest port terminal opens today in Oro

CAGAYAN de Oro City--Local government units and private sector organizations in Northern Mindanao have lauded the opening today (July 15, 2019) of the biggest seaport Passenger

Terminal Building (PTB) in the country at the Cagayan de Oro port in Barangay Macabalan.

Lodged in a two-storey building with a total floor area of 5,597 square meters, the new passenger terminal boasts of a 1,176-passenger seating capacity on its

ground floor, and a 1,221-passenger seating capacity on its second floor.

According to Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) General Manager Jay Santiago, the new facility is eyed to boost opportunities for economic growth and tourism, not

only in the city or in the province of Misamis Oriental, but for the whole of Northern Mindanao.

“The construction of this brand new building will greatly strengthen the region as the global gateway to Mindanao. Once we inaugurate this on July 15, we

are opening Cagayan de Oro to the nation and to the rest of the world as we pursue progress for our seaports,” Santiago said.

New uptown district soon to rise in Cagayan de Oro

CAGAYAN de Oro City--A 64-year-old disabled person and an 11-year-old boy was killed in an early morning fire at the relocation site in the village of Canito-an here Saturday.

P20m US grant boosts PH fight v plastic pollution

THE US government is helping the country battle marine debris.

On Thursday, the US government awarded local environment advocate, Mother Earth Foundation, and public interest network EcoWaste Coalition grants totaling some PHP20 million to support anti-marine debris projects the groups had committed to undertake in the country.

“We’re proud to work with the Philippines in finding and funding solutions to the plastic waste problem in our oceans,” US Deputy Chief of Mission John Law said at the grant-signing event in Quezon City.

He raised the urgency for action, noting that plastics’ invasion of marine waters is already harming ecosystems and biodiversity aside from

threatening people’s health.

“Every year, eight million tons of plastic waste are dumped in the world’s oceans,” he said.

Such waste ends up inside the bodies of people who eat fish that ingest this debris, he noted.

The grants are part of the Municipal Waste Recycling Program (MWRP) of USAID, the lead US government agency for international development and disaster assistance.

MWRP “supports solid waste management and water recycling efforts by local and national governments, civil society organizations and academic institutions in the Philippines, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam,” US Embassy in Manila said in its press release.

Earth Foundation chairperson Sonia Mendoza, the group will use the said grant to transform the 30 barangay units in Batangas City into zero waste villages “We’ll do a house-tohouse information and education campaign there to teach people how to achieve zero waste,” she said at the grant-signing’s side.

Achieving zero waste will help mitigate the flow of debris -- particularly plastics -- into marine waters, she noted.

Zero waste is the concept of generating little or no waste.

Mendoza said the foundation will undertake its project during the next 18 months.

of the total grant will fund research on plastics pollution in Manila Bay and waste collection efficiency there.

“Data we’ll generate will serve as baseline for the national action plan on marine litter,” she said.

GENERAL Santos City--Around 2,500 households in remote upland villages in Sarangani province are set to benefit from a P300 million solar power electrification project supported by the European Union (EU).

Jelyn Apura, acting head of the Provincial Planning and Development Office (PPDO), said preparations are underway for the implementation of the project in offgrid communities or areas that could not be reached by power lines under the Mindanao grid.

She said they are currently processing the required documents and assessing the areas that will be included in the electrification project, in coordination with the provincial federation of the Association of Barangay Councils.

The province had been chosen by EU as one of the two provinces in Region 12 or that will be covered by the initiative, which is dubbed Strengthening Off-grid Lighting with Appropriate Renewable Energy Solutions or Solares.

It will also benefit some 2,500 households in Sultan Kudarat province.

Apura said the project’s implementation will be spearheaded by Mahintana Foundation and the Peace and Equity Foundation, in partnership with the Dole Philippines Inc. and the South Cotabato II Electric Cooperative.

The provincial government, led by Gov. Steve Chiongbian Solon, has committed to provide the necessary for its rollout, she said.

Under the project, the official said the householdbeneficiaries will each receive a solar home system unit.

Each unit is composed of a solar panel with a peak capacity of 50 watts, battery and system box that can power a transistor radio, television unit, five lightemitting diode or LED lights and charge a cellphone, she said.

“The project implementers will also provide beneficiaries with livelihood projects,” she said in a statement.

Once installed, Apura said the solar home systems will mainly benefit schoolchildren and students in the upland communities.

“It will greatly improve the lives of our residents in the far-flung areas, especially our indigenous peoples,” she added. (MindaNews)

How to Catch a Learner’s Attention (Learning Materials)

Nowadays, there are a lot of things that can easily distract a child from listening to discussions.

Although simple repercussions might work for a while, it is not long lasting. Being able to get the attention of the students is just as important as retaining the lessons in their minds.

Learning materials are one way to start grabbing

their interest. The tools that teachers use for discussions, especially when teaching grade school students, should comprise of brightly colored visual aids with quirky caricatures. A fun method of teaching numbers, on the other hand, may be demonstrated using flash cards with fun designs such as animals or cartoon characters. In a more advanced

group of students, using PowerPoint presentations with animations and gifs from popular TV series or movies can also greatly help.

In addition, the teachers should also learn how to avoid overloading the kids with too much information by taking a break once in a while and letting them dance to a tune or sing along nursery rhymes.

“Both ushered the company’s annual observance of the World Environment Day on June 5 and the Philippine Environment Month last June,” stressed Miso.

The mangrove planting was in collaboration with the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG)- Region 10 conducted in Barangay Taytay, El Salvador City, MisOr on May 29, 2019.

PCG 10 Deputy Commander Dexter Torres thanked FDC Misamis for being one of the private entities in Region 10 that responded to their invitation.

The activity, Torres said, was part of PCG’s anniversary geared towards environmental stability and sustainability in Region 10.

Miso expressed gratefulness to PCG 10 for inviting FDC Misamis to join with their mangrove planting.

“Such invite is a manifestation that PCG 10 trusts FDC Misamis in our pursuit in taking care of the

environment.”

Environmental Stewardship is one among the four pillars of FDC Misamis’ Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs and projects.

The other three are: Economic Enrichment, Education for Empowerment and Enhanced Health Care.

Meanwhile, for the coastal cleanup, Miso said, “It’s so nice to see that our employees allotted time to gather all kinds of garbage along the coastline from the plant’s jetty area to the mouth of Tagoloan river.”

“If left uncollected for a period, this littered rubbish will pollute our marine resources,” added Miso.

Heartbreaking for Oca

EVERYONE in a drug user’s family is affected when he or she gets exposed or worse, get caught and jailed, I once heard a health professional who dealt with drug cases said.

So it pains me to read about what happened to Sean Moreno, son of Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Oscar Moreno a few weeks ago.

My heart is broken reading the unkind and harsh remarks and comments from Facebook users who don’t know how Sean ended up the way he did. But just as there are those who judged, there are also those who sympathized and offered their prayers and advice to the mayor and his family.

It’s heartbreaking indeed for the Moreno family. Any parent’s heart

would bleed on seeing their children arrested for one crime or another and for the Moreno family, learning about Sean’s arrest is a nightmare. Reading the mayor’s prepared statement made me cry and one can feel his agony.

As the eldest son, it is expected that Sean would receive a lot of love and attention from parents. Yet Sean is but one of many users in a country still plagued by the drug menace and he just so happened to be the mayor’s son. There is no precise medical explanation on why drug users fall back to their addiction even after undergoing intervention and rehabilation.

As parents, it is but natural for them to dream big for their children and to

work hard to make those dreams come true. Alas both parents and children make mistakes and these mistakes which can be either undone or not often hound them to their graves.

While the public should know anything that may compromise their elected official’s performance, private matters are best left to the family.

Drug addiction and alcoholism remains a persistent menace and while we should go after these drug pushers and syndicates, we should also respect and be compassionate to those families who lost their sons/daughters to drug use as well as those whose children are still recovering from the ill effects of drug use. She said drug use is both a health and mental issue. UNHRC anti-illegal drug resolution stinks, biased

THE adoption of the Iceland-sponsored resolution by the United Nation Human Rights Council (UNHRC), which called for “action against the spate of killings” in the Philippines in the “anti-illegal drug war,” was ridiculous and a mockery of fairness.

In fact, many questioned the adoption of the resolution in the 48-member UNHRC body. Of the 48 members, only 18 cast affirmative votes, 14 negative and 15 abstained. In other words, the vote was not credible. Foreign Secretary

Teodoro Locsin Jr. said that the UNHRC vote did not even represent a “simple majority.” Agreed.

There is the question on how Iceland crafted the resolution, albeit the motive behind its adoption, which call for investigation into alleged violations committed in the anti-illegal drug campaign in the country.

Aside from substantiating the alleged 22,000 victims of the anti-illegal drug campaign in the Philippines, the UNHRC failed to take into account the legitimate anti-illegal drug

operations of the country’s law enforcers.

If the Philippine National Police (PNP) is to be asked, they would tell the UNHRC that the only a little 3,000 people were killed in legitimate anti-illegal drug campaign operations.

The victims were reportedly killed when they traded bullets with the law enforcers. The UNHRC resolution did not also consider the number of law enforcers killed while in conducting a legitimate operation against illegal drug traders/ operators.

Wrapping the good, discarding the bad

AS we come clos e to the fourth SONA of the President, it’s time to wrap up the good and discard the bad.

We have seen the best and worst in the three years of the Duterte administration -- all those things that had brought out the best and the worst as a nation struggling in catching up with the rest of the ASEAN economies.

What is re-assuring however is that even the worst phase in our lives can change into the most amazing one with great optimism.

And what is good news is that the saturation point is not yet felt (not yet, literally!) when it comes to the war on drugs, the anti-corruption drive in the bureaucracy, terrorism in our midst, not counting the burning issues that come

day after day without let up.

The latest of which was Iceland’s successful bid to call for the UN intervention on the allegation that the Duterte administration has a staggering record of EJKs. But half way through in 2019 , the SWS latest survey result had posted a record high for Duterte.

A noted economist had painted good reasons to be optimistic based on the significant positive gains registered by the national economy in the last two years.

This positive economic outcome was founded on D ut e r t e’s prom i s e to eradicate crime and corruption. It brought back people’s belief in good governance, and restored investors’ confidence.

We are now the fastest g rowing e conomy in the ASEAN region and this is mainly due to the resurgence of the country’s sound microeconomic fundamentals and growth prospects.

The country posted a 6.8 percent growth hike— slightly lower from the government target of 7.1, yet it is one of the most robust growth pace in three years.

D u t e r t e ’s C h i n a unprecedented pivot and the forging of an independent foreign policy, all in one instance had debunked long held myths about PH-US relations, and thus highlighted a promising PH-C hinaRussia partnerships.

The peace and order gains represents a decisive effort at ridding the country of specific crime problems never given so much serious attention before.

I found a very nice quotation shared by Dr. John C. Maxwell, the leading authority on leadership, who says, “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way and shows the way!”

“Nearly all men can withstand adversity. If you truly want to test a man’s character, give him power”, stressed already Abraham Lincoln.

Character is what you are doing in the dark. By the way, nowadays, I wouldn’t only mention “men” alone when it comes to leadership.

There are innumerable women holding their own.

And that’s good so... .

Remember and look around: in the past and at present, one can observe someone at any corner offering us to lead our way.

Politicians compete for our vote of confidence.

Athletes and entertainers show us their pictures of success.

A lot of different religious leaders pledge, promise and bind in flock gathering.

Well, what are some of the traits that a great leader must have or develop character? Is character really enough? How about integrity? Are you, my dear reader, a leader? Is what you are saying AND DOING, the same? Are your followers wholeheartedly convinced of your integrity?

the truth in small matters cannot be trusted with the important matters!”

DTI opens 15th Negosyo Center in Bulacan T

HE Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) opened the 15th Negosyo Center in this province early this week to bring government services closer to the people.

The business center is located at the Business Permit and Licensing Office (BPLO) on the first floor of the Government Building here.

BPLO head Myrna Lopez said that with the opening of the Negosyo Center in this town, business-related services will be faster and easier.

Under Republic Act No. 10644 (Go Negosyo Act), micro, small and medium enterprises are given ease in doing business when a Negosyo Center is just within their reach.

The center is a one-stopshop, where business owners can process their business registration and seek business advisory services, and provides business information, advocacy, monitoring and evaluation of businessprocess improvement.

Once a Negosyo Center is in place in a certain community, a local business person may no longer need to line up or go to the nearest DTI office to have his/ her business registered and wait for days to process the registration process.

AirAsia Philippines chief executive officer Dexter Comendador on Friday told the Philippine News Agency (PNA) the airline has managed to sustain a high average on-time performance (OTP) this July.

OTP is being measured by number of departures and arrivals that take place in less than 15 minutes after scheduled departure and arrival times, including cancellations.

The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) has been publishing a daily record of lowest and highest OTPs of various airlines since mid-May. AirAsia Philippines landed in the lowest OTP section on several instances. Comendador said that in all of AirAsia Philippines’ hubs, its average

OTP was 63 percent in May, and 69 percent in June.

This month, the carrier’s average OTP, he said, is 80 percent. “On good days, we (even) end at 90-92 percent (OTP),” he remarked.

The executive also noted that for planes leaving Manila, AirAsia’s OTP for July 1-11 reached 96 percent, and 100 percent on good days. “We are able to sustain 90 percent up to the third

wave, on good days,” he added.

Probe eyes links between radio anchor’s death, attack on station GENERAL Santos City--The Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS) is looking into the possible connections between the killing on Wednesday night of a radio anchor in Kidapawan City and the attack on a radio station here last week.

Undersecretar y Joel Egco, PTFoMS executive director, said they are currently determining whether the murder of Eduardo Dizon, anchor of Brigada News FM station in Kidapawan City, and the strafing last July 4 of the Bombo Radyo station here were linked to the same issue.

“May mainit na issue sa area na yan, at alam nyo na kung ano yan (There’s a hot issue in that area and you already know what that is),” he said in an interview over Brigada News FM here.

Egco was apparently referring to the proliferation in the area of various illegal investment schemes, which were tackled almost daily by the concerned radio stations.

These include the “Ponzilike” investment operations of controversial religious group Kapa Community Ministry International Inc., which was shut down by the government last month on orders from President Rodrigo R. Duterte.

Prior to the attacks, personnel from the two radio

stations reportedly received threats that were believed triggered by their handling of the issue.

But Egco said he has asked the Philippine National Police, which is part of PTFoMS, to dig deeper into both attacks and identify all those behind them.

In the case of Dizon, he said he already received

the initial report from Kidapawan City police investigators.

He said they’re also getting some “bits and pieces of information from our friends in the media” that may be used in resolving the case.

Dizon, former station manager of 97.5 Brigada News FM-Kidapawan, was

driving home to Tejada Subdivision in Makilala, North Cotabato around 10:35 p.m. when he was gunned down by unidentified assailants along Quezon Boulevard in Kidapawan City.

Egco said he was deeply saddened by the incident, which happened nearly a year after the killing of radio broadcaster Joey Llana

in Albay.

As in the other previous cases of media killings, he assured that PTFoMS, which was created through Administrative Order No. 01 issued by Duterte, will not stop “until we get into the bottom of this, identify the motive and the suspects, and file cases against all those involved.”

“The Duterte administration is committed to end cases of violence against the media in the country,” he said.

Values is everywhere and anybody could have what it say’s value and education. It is now our task to understand the concept and importance of values education as it is part of the new curriculum. Values education in the new curriculum is an important “thing” to every student’s life. Learners have their own understanding about values and when, where and how they would be able to use and apply in such situation or place they’re into. We as still learners in this institution, we are now playing a huge role in molding and shaping our students or learners behavior and character in the future.

Every learner has their own behavior, experiences, values, and actions being themselves and from what they acquire from their parents, community and from the people that surrounds them. Hence, not all learners think and believe the things in common, they have their own perspective and level of understanding towards learning.

B eing in t his ne w world of te chnolog y, rapid changes, diversions and chaos that had happened which children are involved. So that’s why “value education” aims to instill good morals and values in order to help them to distinguish

what’s right from wrong, simply as that. We believe that learners learn their best when they believe they can learn in different ways and at different rate. Everyone can make changes; let’s just work hand-in-hand in aiming the goal in common good.

Educators also believe that they can make changes in strengthening virtues, values and competencies which are needed for the 21st century learners. The Role of the Teacher in Values Formation of the Learner KARL ANTHONY O. SALISE Carmen national high School

In school, children are members of a small society that exerts a tremendous influence on their moral development. Teachers serve as role model to students in school, they play a major role in inculcating their ethical behavior. Peers at school diffuse boldness about cheating, lying, stealing and consideration for others. Though there are rules and regulations, the educational institutions infuse the values education to the children in an informal way. They play a major role in developing ethical behavior in children. We should visualize education as a whole, having to do directly with all disciplines.

Being a teacher it involves so many things at the same time you become a second parent to the learners, many times a social worker, a psychologist, a therapist, a simple listener, you are also a model for them to follow. There must be no religion involved, just the teaching and review of values like love, integrity, sharing, dedication, responsibility, self-esteem, truth, tolerance… and so on. It is our responsibility as teachers to lead students to success, to a good and healthy life, to a life where hate, defiance, challenge of authority and disrespectful actions are not the answers to our problems dealing with values and moral issues is recognized as an integral part of teachers’ roles. Especially in culturally heterogeneous societies, teachers face multiple values that students and their families may hold.

The challenge now is, how will teachers incorporate values education to the students of this generation, where technologies are at its peak? It is almost seemed

impossible but in so many ways, a teacher can certainly do the impossible. Students will look after their teachers as a second parent, therefore it is easier for them to listen, and a teacher should not forget that it is better for the students to learn values by learning their language first and it is the teacher who will adjust, not the students. The old ways of learning values may not be the same of how students learn values today but let us be reminded that it has the same content and value, only your ways of teaching or strategies is changed to fit into today’s generation.

Teachers are role model for the students. Their actions convey more than their words. Teaching is not just about academics but teaching is all about attitude-positive/negative towards their job of imparting quality education. “We just added that the instances of misuse (of slots), and the immediate recall of slots after a periodic review,” he said.

Globe Digital Thumbprint Program launches module for parents to increase digital literacy

OMING from the success of its Digital Thumbprint Program (DTP) which provides cyber wellness and safety training to teachers and students, Globe Telecom is now educating and empowering parents to become more responsible consumers of online technology.

Globe has created a special lesson, which combines all essential learnings from DTP, and the insights gathered from research in order to educate parents and help them guide and protect their children in this digital age.

The DTP parent module was piloted in Muntinlupa Business High School, one of the Global Filipino Schools, where around 50 parents participated.

The module consists of four parts: online security and safety, digital responsibility and etiquette,

how to think critically when online, and how to be a positive contributor to others through the power of technology.

“We want to enhance the cyber safety skills of

our children and one of the ways to do that is to start with the parents. Informed parents can help their kids become responsible digital citizens who act in ways that protect their

individual well-being while remaining respectful towards other people,” said Miguel Bermundo, Head of Globe Citizenship and Advocacy.

Being an information

and communications technology company, Globe sees the importance of educating Filipinos on the responsible use of technology -- be it through gadgets, website browsing and interacting with social media platforms.

Thus, in 2016, Globe adopted DTP, which was started by its Singtel Group affiliate Optus of Australia, to increase students’ knowledge of digital citizenship and cybersafety by taking a critical look at their online behavior and helping them develop insights into the influences of the online world and the choices they are making.

To date, DTP workshops have already been implemented in more than 200 schools, in all 17 regions in the Philippines.

Many of these schools also committed to share the workshops to their neighboring schools.

DTP has been proven

to increase levels of digital citizenship awareness among the youth as reflected in a 2017 assessment conducted by Nielsen among 275 Grade 7-12 students who studied the modules except for Digital Discernment. The study showed an increase in the number of students practicing at least one security measure to protect their information online, a large reduction in the number of students who have random interactions with strangers online, a significant increase in the number of students who are aware of how their online information is used by websites and apps, and a reduction in the number of students who visit internet cafes for online activities.

San Juan expressed optimism that with a more sophisticated terminal and port, Cagayan de Oro would attract more cruise ships in addition to the ones which have been visiting the city over the past three years.

It has now become a triumvirate of efforts among barangays, LCEs and Philippine National Police (PNP), he added.

There are many potential source of conflicts in the community but before they become violent incidents, police should already find a way to resolve such issues. Under CSOP, Elango said, our police should already get involved.

Police should coordinate with the barangay and initiate finding solutions to the problem.

In the past, with the old policy, Community Oriented Policy System (COPS), the mandate was if there was a crime, then the police must be quick to respond. It was reactionary, Elango said.

Although police visibility helps to reduce crimes to happen, but the thrust now of NAPOLCOM, is not just to take away the opportunity of criminals to commit the crime but ultimately take away their desire to commit such crime.

The desire to commit the crime should be eliminated, Elango said.

He explained, the effect of police visibility is just to delay the commission of crime but the desire of the person to commit the crime is still there.
