CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- A healthy diet, food with nutritional value is still required in emergency situations according to Marissa Navales, regional nutrition coordinator of National Nutrition Council region 10. During Talakayan sa PIA on 12 July 2017 in Cagayan de Oro City, Navales said that the government is still responsible for providing nutritious food in times of emergencies such as what is going on now in evacuation centers in Iligan City and Lanao del Norte where thousands of Maranaos are displaced due to the ongoing fight between terrorists and government troops in Marawi City.

She said that they are coming up with a community kitchen in the evacuation sites wherein IDPs can cook healthy foods. Non government organizations such as the Modern Nanays of Mindanao and Nutritionist-Dietitians’ Associations of the Philippines (NDAP) Misamis Oriental Chapter have contributed to this by providing and buying healthy food to be cooked in Buru-un evacuation center. Further, they are also urging mothers to continue breastfeeding children from 0-2 years of age and beyond. Navales explained that some mothers have stopped breastfeeding perhaps because of the trauma. But they are slowly educating

and providing ways to make breastfeeding possible again. Meanwhile, Sheryl N. Ave, nutrition dietitian of Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) region 10 said that DSWD is continuously providing food packs to IDPs in evacuation centers and home-based. The food pack is composed of six kg NFA rice, four tins sardines, two tins corned beef, two tins beef loaf, two tins tuna and six sachets of coffee (3-day consumption for a family of 4-5 persons). Meanwhile, Navales mentioned that Department of Health (DOH) will provide egg a day in evacuation centers. This is to meet daily requirement See food, page 3
