DOH-10 acts on increased cases in Camiguin via boost in detection, isolation

19 cadavers in crashed C-130 aircraft identified By CRIS DIAZ, Executive Editor

CAMP EVANGELISTA, Cagayan De Oro City: Nineteen of the 49 soldiers who perished in a military C130 cargo plane crashed in Patikul, Sulu were already positively, Maj. Francisco Garello, Jr., of the army’s 4ID here said Thursday. Garello also said that the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) also corrected the previous report of 50 total fatalities citing that there had been a double count. He said that as of July 7, the total casualties were still at 49. Identified were Major Emmanuel Makalintal, Major Michael Vincent Benolerao, First Lieutenant Joseph Hintay, Technical Sergeant Mark Anthony Agana, Technical Sergeant Donald Badoy, Staff Sergeant Jan Neil Macapaz, Staff Sergeant Michael Bulalaque, and Sergeant Jack Navarro from the Philippine Air Force.

Also named were Captain Higello Emeterio from the AFP Medical Corps and First Lieutenant Sheena Alexandria Tato from the AFP Nurse Corps. From the Philippine Army, identified were Sergeant Butch Maestro, Private First Class Christopher Rollon, Private First Class Felixzalday Provido, Privates Raymar Carmona, Vic Monera, Mark Nash Lumanta, Jomar Gabas, Marcelino Alquisar, and Mel Mark Angana. The AFP has already transported 11 of the remains to their home towns. They were Captain Emeterio, Sgt Maestro, Tsg Agana, PFC Rollon, PFC Provido, Pvt Gabas, Pvt Alquisar, Pvt Lumanta, Pvt Angana, Pvt Carmona, and Pvt Monera. The remains of 1Lt Tato was transported via C295 aircraft while seven of the identified cadavers were being prepared for air and

land transport. The AFP Chief of Staff General Cirilito Sobejana said that efforts were still focused on the identification of 30 more cadavers were still in Zamboanga City, and the ongoing investigation of the plane crash. “This is a very hard task since the cadavers were beyond recognition but we have experts supporting our efforts. We are doing our best to expedite the identification and the ongoing investigation without compromising its credibility,” said General Sobejana. He asked for the people’s understanding as investigating teams were still gathering more pieces of evidence to find out the circumstances of the unfortunate incident. “Our people can be assured of the AFP’s transparency, however, the investigation process takes time. All factors were being considered to ensure the accuracy of the findings,” General Sobejana said.

Manobo-Pulingayon tribe suffering extreme poverty? Why? Some one thousand families of the Manobo-Pulingayon Cultural Community are currently living in makeshift shanties along the highway in Quezon, Bukidnon and these families currently don’t have any source of livelihood, safe shelter, basic services and access to potable water. Their current living condition include consumption of kamote at least once a day for sustenance as they are often than not left with no choice but to eat only kamote due to the lack of financial capacity to buy enough food for their families. To make matters worse, the members of the community are drinking water from the very same river where they are also bathing and as a result, some of the children are having diarrhea. Children are also becoming more malnourished and with their current plight, kids are tied up at night so as to prevent them from running in the highway and from getting hit by the passing trucks and cars.

Why is this cultural community push to extreme poverty? Before I zero-in on the horrible social injustice committed against the Indigenous People, may I first dwell on what is really extreme poverty. In the book entitled, “Age of Sustainable Development,” the amazing author, Jeffrey D. Sachs, described extreme poverty as a multidimensional concept. Poverty is typically described as the lack of adequate income, but extreme poverty should be understood in more general terms as the inability to meet basic human needs for food, water, sanitation, safe energy, education, and a livelihood. Extreme poverty as described by Mr. Sachs means “lacking modern energy for safe cooking, such as natural gas, with the household instead relying on wood -burning stoves that cause chronically smokefilled homes and the subsequent respiratory diseases in the children. Extreme poverty often means that households cannot secure

decent schooling for their children.” No doubt, for five years now, the Manobo-Pulingayon Tribe has been living in extreme poverty as they cannot meet their basic needs. For them, life is a daily struggle for dignity and even for survival. Now election is fast approaching. May I ask, what have the politicians done to reduce extreme poverty? Nothing! In fact, it is they who have caused extreme poverty as they cannot moderate their greed in connivance with national agencies of government.
