Bloggers are not above libel laws: Poe

By CRIS DIAZ, Executive Editor

AGAYAN de Oro City--A man has bitten a python to death on a classic “man-beast” duel to death on the outskirts of Cagayan de Oro City Monday evening.

Alfredo Edrote, 40, a farmer, who lived in Indahag, a mountain village Southeast of the city, was on his way home Monday evening when waylaid by a two-meter-and-a-half python by the road. A reticulated python (Python Reticulatus), is a non-venomous snake found in Southeast Asia, considered as the world’s longest snakes and longest reptiles.

Edrote said that he has an earlier drinking spree with friends and was on his way home when he noticed the snake blocking his way. “It was pitch dark, and I suddenly noticed that the snake was in front of me, ready to attack. Without hesitation, I grabbed the snake, which bit my hand and tried to constrict me,” Edrote said. See bites, page 11

PCOO gaffes have ‘no malicious intent’ PRESIDENTIAL C ommunications Operations Office (PCOO) Secretary Martin Andanar on Tuesday admitted that his agency had made mistakes in the past but stressed that these mistakes had no “malicious intent.” Andanar made this remark during the second Senate panel hearing on fake news noting that the mistakes should not be the sole basis of the PCOO’s performance. “We have made mistakes in the past and we have been held accountable for

them. But these were honest mistakes with no intention to malign anybody and with no malicious intent,” Andanar said in his speech. “ T h e s e s h ou l d n o t overshadow or speak for the work of thousands in government who work tirelessly to provide the public the right and useful information,” he added. Andanar also told the committee that the agency should not be judged on the personal blog ran by its Assistant Secretary Mocha Uson. See pcoo, page 11

A BLOGGER that passes on false information should be held accountable, Senator Grace Poe said Tuesday. Poe made this remark in her opening statement at the second hearing on fake news, reminding bloggers that they are not above libel laws. “Though we support a person’s right to freedom of expression, once that writer defames the subject of his article, that writer must be held liable in accordance with our laws,” Poe said in her speech. She said that a blogger could not just attack a person without basis, and then hide behind the skirt of free expression. “I think one must have the courage to stand by what he has written and posted publicly,” she added, stressing that bloggers could not claim that their posts were not subject to a journalist’s code of ethics. During the last hearing on fake news, there was a proposal to regulate fake news through legislation. However, Poe and other participants expressed alarm See bloggers, page 11
