LTFRB-10 urges operators to shift to modern PUVs
C
AGAYAN de Oro City--A ranking official of the Land Transportation Franchising Regulatory Board (LTFRB) in Region 10 has urged operators to shift to modern public utility vehicles (PUVs).
“This is a huge first step to lessen traffic incidents in the region,” said LTFRB-10 Regional Director Aminoden Guro as he reminded them that the government’s modernization program will start in June this year. In a press conference hosted by the Philippine Information Agency (PIA), Guro said that 95 percent of PUVs in the region are included in the group to be phased out. “PUVs that more than 15 years will be phased out starting June 2020. There is a Department Order that we
need to replace the dilapidated PUJ’s because of the accidents that happen on the road,” he emphasized. Meanwhile, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) in Region 10 (LTO) said it will support the program. LTO Information Officer Ferdinand Flores said the modernization will be beneficial to the commuters as well as to the environment. “We do have a responsibility to our environment and we believe that the PUV modernization project is Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Oscar Moreno, Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) 10 one way of fulfilling our director Aminoden Guro and Land Transportation Office (LTO) 10 director Nelson Manaloto lead the inauguration See MODERN, page 11

Resylyn Pardo aka “Jamby” of Guerilla Front 6 (5th right) says they are losing ground because people started to notice the progress of projects President Duterte has done in their respective barangays. The projects include roads and bridges construction; road widening and expansion; setting up of health centers in remote areas; among all other government programs where the poorest of the poor are all counted in. “Our supporters, therefore, started to fall off. Eventually, they [mass base] withdrew their support to our group,” Jamby says in a news conference in Valencia City as they surrender to local government officials. (PIA Bukidnon)

In a press conference, she recounted their ease of recruiting “Lumad (native)” folks in previous years because no government agencies tried to visit the areas involved in their movement. “Previously, we can easily sway our Lumad brothers to join in our group. Mankind’s survival hangs in efficient communication
We write about the coming of the new age as the year 2020 unfolds. At the start of the year in January 2020, everyone is apprehensive when the Iran-US conflict almost blow out of proportion. Fearful of the possible consequences, the community of nations watched the Iran-US tirade with cautions. The angst -ridden doomsayers paint crimson red the Middle East as the horror of a nuclear war circulates around the world. Not an exception, the Philippines banned IranIraq bound overseas foreign workers. The availability of the state-of-the-art communication technology provided the world an updated development as Iran and United States exchanged barbs. The incident was the offshoot of the killing of Iran’s top
General Qassem Soleimani. The US admitted to have perpetrated the killing using an armed military drone. An updated information provides the protagonists an accurate view of the condition unfolding between the two countries. The community of nations also heaved a sigh of relief as the high emotions between Iran and US subsided amid threats of major attacks. Had it not for the accurate and timely information about the real condition of the US-based troops in Iraq, things would have been different. The Iran-US simmering barbs remind us of the various war events that shaped the world. For instance, the assassination of the Archduke Ferdinand of Austria started a chain of events leading to WW1 in 1914,
which ended in 1918. The WWII (1936-1945) was caused by Germany’s violation of the Versailles Treaty. The peace treaty was signed by Germany, Japan, and Italy, which ended WW1. While scholars and war analysts outlined a number of causes that precipitated world war the issue about misunderstanding and miscommunication among diplomats was listed as one of the top causes of war. An accurate and timely information through an efficient and effective communication between arguing countries is an ingredient to prevent the possible escalation of conflict. Certainly, the prudent exercise of timely and accurate communication has prevented the rash and aggressive moves of either

Iran nor US that might have ended in a major armed conflict in the Middle East. With the cooling down of Iran and the US, the world appears to be safer at the moment. In spite of the thaw, the relationship between the two countries remains fragile. In no time, the Iran-US conflict might erupt anew. However, with an efficient communication and adept diplomacy, world leaders believed that a major armed conflict could be easily resolved. The world is fortunate to have been gifted of an advance communication technolog y as the new millennium sits in. In the years ahead, communication technology will dictate the fate of the human race.
Nuts & Bolts
My healthy tips for surviving business travel Travelling on business trips is not as glamorous as it seems and it can really run you down if you don’t plan ahead. Taking simple steps can help reduce the risks to your health. Medications: • Take your meds as prescribed and keep them in your carry-on luggage packed in their original containers. • Have a list of your meds in your wallet with the names of your doctors and any of your diagnosed conditions, • If you are on medications that are time released such as some heart and diabetic meds you need to talk to your doctor about adjusting them especially if there is a time change.
• If you have had a recent nuclear stress test get a note from your cardiologist because the residue on your body may alert security. • Make sure you keep to a schedule with your meals and snacks, especially if your meds affect you differently when you don’t eat • If you are diabetic pack your glucose testing device and insulin on your person, do not pack in your luggage, Ditto for your meds • If you have a medical device attached to your body, metal devices and or something you wear like an insulin pump call the airline or airport security and TSA ( travelling to US ) ahead to make sure you are not subject to any
difficulties at the airports. • Pack over the counter meds just in case based on your past history, ex: baby aspirin to reduce the risk of blood clots. Meals: • Have small meals throughout the day it’s easier on your heart, helps reduce cravings and is especially important to those with diabetes. • Don’t eat fatty foods, or larger meals and alcohol late at night can lead to heartburn • Watch your sodium and fat intake most restaurants use large amounts • Keep healthier snacks available, fruit, veggie sticks, small amounts of unsalted nuts or dried fruit, light yogurt. Have a fridge set up in your room.
JEROME DE LA FUENTE
• If you have food allergies or intolerances research restaurants ahead of time. Fluids: • Keep well hydrated before, during and after your trip especially on planes • Consume mostly water and non-carbonated calorie free beverages Exercise: • Move your body more whenever you can, make sure on flights you get up and stretch several times to reduce risk of blood clots. Insurance: • Make sure you have insurance that covers medical issues while traveling.
Hints and Traces
Up close and personal
THAT gospel episode about Christ healing a big crowd of sick people by laying his hands on each one of them (cfr. Lk 4, 40) speaks eloquently of how we ought to deal with everyone we meet in our life. He just did not say, “All of you, be cured.” No. He approached everyone and laid his hands on each one. Like Christ, we should try to be up close and personal with each of the people we meet, irrespective of who they are, whether they are relatives, friends, colleagues, strangers and even enemies.
We have to avoid a casual and generic dealing that does not go deep enough to show and give the real charity that we are commanded to do. Of course, this will require a lot of effort and sacrifice. We most likely will be tempted to think that Christ is God first of all. He has all the powers. Nothing is impossible with him. We cannot be like him since he is God in the first place. We are only human. But he is also man who has assumed our human condition to the point of
becoming like sin without committing sin (cfr. 2 Cor 5, 21). He has assumed the worst condition that man can get into. Being “the way, the truth and the life,” he is showing us in this particular case how to deal with people in general. The fact that we are simply human beings with all sorts of limitations and weaknesses should not be an excuse from developing and having a universal concern with a personalized approach in our dealings with people. Let us remember that we

have been made in God’s image and likeness, endowed with powers to enable us, with God’s grace, to be truly like God. In other words it’s like we have been given a blank check the amount of which we are completely free to write. And what we write on that check depends on how we correspond to See PERSONAL, page 11

Tulong Taal: GCash enables users to donate to Taal aid efforts
W
ITH the recent eruption of the Taal Volcano, the spirit of Bayanihan became stronger and much more visible with the outpouring of donations and volunteers from the different sectors of the society to help those in need. Various groups and individuals launched their own donation drives to collect humanitarian aid and bring them to the people who are currently affected by the volcanic eruption in Batangas.
All over the news and social media, the whole world see how Filipinos of different walks of life -from government agencies, humanitarian aid groups, foundations, down to individuals -- strengthen one another to help those in need. “The Filipino spirit of Bayanihan is best displayed during these times, and we at GCash inspired with the outflowing of donations and financial aid to those affected by this calamity. We have since added a new
in-app feature to make it more convenient for our users to support relief efforts,” GCash President Anthony Thomas said. To make it much simpler for individuals to support these causes, GCash, the Philippines’ leading mobile wallet, has partnered with several non-government organizations and foundations to enable its users to contribute any amount to their chosen groups or even individuals via their GCash app. GCash users simply have to open their apps, click on the “Pay Bills” tile, select “Others,” click on “Tulong Taal,” and input the amount they would like to contribute. “We at GCash are one with the Filipino people in helping those in need in this time of great need. Through our platform, GCash users now have a more convenient means to aid those who are affected by the Taal Volcano eruption. We have long realized the power of our platform, and we will continue to transform it as a conduit of generosity for the greater good,” Thomas said.
With the advent of financial technology, Filipinos are now more empowered to harness their innate generosity and helpfulness in times of disasters. First launched in mid 2019, GCash for Good enables users to donate monetary assistance to social causes such as disaster relief via their mobile phones.
Proceeds of the donation drive will go directly to partner organizations such as the Philippine Red Cross, World Vision, Animal Kingdom Foundation, Ayala Foundation, the School of Deaf and Applied Studies, Hope in a Bottle, and ABS-CBN Foundation. These groups are spearheading different
humanitarian aid and relief operations for the evacuees. GCash account holders may also opt to directly send financial assistance to their chosen aid group via their own QR codes posted in social media. “No amount is too small when it comes to helping others. Each peso is a significant step towards the betterment of the lives of the people in need,” Thomas added. Aside from the GCashled donation drive, individuals are also harnessing the power of digital finance to gather donations and launch their own campaigns. Over the past few days, GCash has noted various GCash users receiving money from different people as financial assistance to humanitarian aid. “It is encouraging for us at GCash to see our platform being used for good causes. This is a huge step for us, as we transform the GCash app to a more socially-significant, responsible and sustainable platform to create an impact on millions of lives in the Philippines,” Thomas said.

As of January 2, 2020, of the total disbursements for CAP, P58.19 million were calamity loans while P308,000 were advance three-month pensions. “For all the CAPs offered in 2019, we allocated more than P2.13 billion to assist at least 10 percent of the identified potential borrowers and pensioners that were affected by the calamities,” Ignacio said. The CAP includes a loan assistance program which is a separate loan window from the
regular salary loan. Members can borrow up to P20,000 in calamity loans depending on their average monthly salary credit in the last 12 months. Financial assistance is also being offered to pensioners. They can apply for an advance three-month worth of their monthly pensions. Members can also apply for a direct housing repair and improvement loan. The calamity loan is payable in two years in equal monthly installments with an annual interest rate of 10 percent and one percent monthly penalty for late payments. To eliminate additional expenses on the part of memberborrowers, SSS waived the one percent service fee.
Applicants under the advance three-month pension, meanwhile, whose present address differs from the address in the SSS database should submit a barangay certification to prove that they reside in a declared calamity area. Aside from the calamity loan, calamity-stricken members with damaged houses can also avail of the direct house repair and Improvement loan with six months moratorium in amortization and interest payments. Members can borrow up to a maximum of P1 million under this program. To qualify for direct house repair and improvement loan, the applicant must not be more than 60 years old and with at least 24 monthly contributions, of which
2,153 billionaires wealthier than 4.6B people Last year, 2,153 billionaires from around the world were richer than 4.6 billion people, a new report from UK-based charity Oxfam said on Monday. The report, named Time to Care said: “Economic inequality is out of control. One percent of the world’s richest have more than twice as much wealth as 6.9 billion people.” During the last decade, the number of billionaires has doubled -- 2,153 -- the report revealed. The world’s richest 22 men’s wealth was over than all African women in the last year, it underlined. The report also warned about extreme poverty in the world, saying: “Almost half of the world’s population lives on less than USD5.50 a day.” It said: “At the top of the global economy, a small elite are unimaginably rich. Their wealth grows exponentially over time, with little effort, and regardless of whether they add value to society.” The report stressed that especially women and girls face poverty in the world.
three contributions were remitted within the last 12-month period prior to the month of filing the loan. Members who wish to avail of the Direct Housing Repair and Improvement Loan are given a 12-month period starting from the implementation of the specific CAP they wish to avail. “To our members who were not yet able to avail of the program, they may check our website, sss. gov.ph or visit the nearest SSS branch to know if they are still qualified to avail of the program. We hope that through the minimal financial assistance SSS can provide, they can immediately recover from their losses,” Ignacio said.
No power problem for Taal eruption-affected areas: DOE By KRIS CRISMUNDO
Women work 12.5 billion hours daily for free and their efforts are “essential” for the world, the report stressed. “Oxfam has calculated that this work adds value to the economy of at least USD10.8 trillion,” it added. Amitabh Behar, Oxfam’s India CEO, said: “They [women] spend billions of hours cooking, cleaning and caring for children and the elderly. Unpaid care work
is the ‘hidden engine’ that keeps the wheels of our economies, businesses and societies moving.” The report proposed that governments must establish a new and human-based economy. It asserted that superrich people are avoiding paying their taxes up to 30 percent. Mentioning inequality between men and women globally, it said: “Men own
50 percent more wealth than women.” The report offered a 0.5 percent additional tax on the richest people’s wealth over the next decade for meeting investment need to generate 117 million new jobs in some sectors -- elderly and childcare, education, and health. 2 village officials gunned down, police manhunt on T
By CRIS DIAZ, Executive Editor
ALAKAG, BUKIDN O N : Tw o v i l lage officials were gunned down by a lone unidentified gunman in the hinterland village of Dominorog, Bukidnon, the police reported here. The victims were identified as Lawrence Pidayanon and Mauricio Guinto, both senior citizens, and members of the barangay council of Dominorog. Pol. Capt. Dominador Orate, Jr., chief of the Talakag Police Station, said
that witnesses told police that a lone gunman shot the village officials on their way to attend the weekly session Monday morning. He said that the suspect reportedly pretended to get a Community Tax Certificate (Cedula) Monday morning and asked for the whereabout of the Village Chief. Orate said that the village treasurer Angeli Vercide told the suspect that the Village Chief was attending a seminar and
was not in office. “Vercide saw a gun tacked on the suspect’s waist prompting her to be suspicious,” Orate said. He said that the gunman went out of the Barangay Hall and wait outside, as if waiting for someone, until the two village council officials arrived where they shot and killed by the gunman. According to Orate, there is no signal in Dominorog, about 54 kilometers, from the nearest police station in Talakag, which resulted in the delay of the
police response. “Operatives used handheld radio whenever a patrol is conducted in Dominorog,” he said. He said that a police manhunt was launched to pursue the suspect who escape using a tricycle toward the mountains of Pangantucan, Bukidnon. The police are looking at the “politics” as the possible motive of the shooting because the husband of the incumbent village chief was also gunned down by unknown suspects in 2017, Orate said.

Bringing Reality to Classroom Management in Teacher Education

Work and life balance of teachers towards teaching proficiency
OUR attitudes control our lives: attitudes are a secret power working twenty-four hours a day, for good or bad. It is paramount importance that we know how to harness and control this great force, this is according to Charles Simmons. In the same manner, teacher’s attitude to-wards teaching plays a vital role in shaping individual’s personality and achievement. Managing our classroom and the learner’s way of learning manifest teacher’s dedication and commit-ment to teach. Hence, learning how to manage a classroom effectively is a difficult task for pre-service teachers. This is compounded by the lack of attention that classroom management receives in many teacher preparation programs and in the field of education in general. In the study of (Fideler & Hanskelhorn, 1999) beginning teachers report that weak class-room management skills and disruptive students are the most significant barriers to being a good teacher and often in their first few years of teaching blame their teacher preparation programs for failing to adequately prepare them for classroom manage-
ment. The reasons for difficulty lie in the lack of attention to the field by the profession, lack of formal preparation in the field by most teachers, and the lack of realitybased pedagogy in many teachers’ education classrooms. To generate more professional attention on classroom management, the focus needs to change. Most teachers view classroom management strategies as tools to control student’s be-havior. This manifest also that teacher should possess and look to classroom management as a resource to improve student learning as opposed to controlling behavior. We really need to di-rect the field of classroom management and evaluate the strategies based on the pupil’s learn-ing outcomes. It is where we must view the theories, strategies, rules and procedures that ap-plied most by our teachers as to evaluate the effect of learning. When we begin to evaluate classroom management’s impact on pupil’s learning we find abundant examples of both successful and unsuccessful strategies. Under the traditional models of management, an effective management strategy is

for a teacher to stop teaching to call out a pupil playing with an object, causing that ‘’misbehavior’’ to end. A more effective manage-ment strategy would be for the teacher to continue to teach, to walk over the pupil, without an-yone else noticing, take the object, and place it in the pupil’s desk. The goal for this strategy is to redirect the pupil back to the lesson in a manner that doesn’t interrupt all pupils learning. Using this type of lens for management brings into question many of the practices teachers cur-rently use in education. Furthermore, teacher must give focus on learning for classroom management is in teacher preparation. To bring the real world to the higher education classroom, we implement a philosophy of teaching and evaluating classroom management based on its effect on learning. There are five identified activities that can be used to assist our teachers to have an effective classroom management: movie study, microteaching, an animated video, an observation proto-col, and the development of a personal management system.

FIGURING out how to achieve work-life balance as a teacher is a huge challenge. Teachers enter the profession because they hope to change lives but they often find that there are obstacles in their path and the expectations teachers face can seem impossible to live up to. Finding the sweet spot between achievement and work-life balance can help teachers build a long, happy and healthy career. Here are some tips on how to achieve work-life balance as a teacher. Respect your time. Teachers tend to be hard workers. Recognize that you’re having an impact. Shut off the electronics. Learn to say no. Prioritize
your health. Don’t forget your friends outside of school. Let it go. It’s not unusual for teachers to stay at school until 7:00 p.m. helping students, to stay up until midnight correcting papers and to spend weekends planning lessons, chaperoning field trips or attending conferences. And make no mistake about it: teachers’ duties are almost impossible to accomplish without putting in extra hours. However, recognizing that you cannot plan countless field trips, attend every school event and serve on all committees can help you focus on what will have the most impact on your students’ success.

God’s grace in our effort to be like God through Christ in the Holy Spirit. We have to train ourselves to have the very mind and heart of Christ. This, of course, would require us to do some adjustments and even drastic changes in our attitudes and ways. What is needed is that we just try and try, even if our best efforts cannot achieve that ideal. Anyway, we are not really expected to reach that goal with our powers alone. It is Christ, with his grace, that will do it for us. Ours is simply to try. We, of course, have our own personal ways that can sort of define us — our temperament, personality, our biases and preferences, our culture and lifestyle, our opinions and views, etc. — but we should not be trapped by them. Our differences and conflicts among ourselves are unavoidable. But they are not meant to be divisive, alienating us from the others. They, in fact, can be the condition to generate the power of God’s love that unites everyone to work on us. That is why Christ told us to be humble, to have the attitude of wanting to serve and not to be served, to avoid the attitude of entitlement. He told us to deny ourselves and carry the cross. (cfr. Mt 16,24) St. Paul reiterates the same idea by saying that we have to regard everybody else as better than us, looking after the other’s interest rather than simply focusing on our own. (cfr. Phil 2 ,3-4) This may be a tremendous, overwhelming endeavor to undertake, but we can always start somewhere. Are we training ourselves, for example, to be more thoughtful and mindful of others? Are we developing a keen interest in the others? Are we learning to let go of our personal preferences to accommodate the way others are?

Asked who initiated their surrender, Jamby quickly said, “We came out on our own because we realized it was futile to pursue our cause.” In fact, Jamby repeatedly apologized to those she may have done wrong in the course of her being an NPA top officer then. The 7-man NPA leaders surrendered to Valencia City mayor Azucena Huervas and congressman Rogelio Neil Roque thru barangay Banlag councilor Saliezer Dejos. Brigadier General Edgardo De Leon, 403rd Brigade Commander said the surrender of Front Secretary is a very significant breakthrough of the Task Force ELCAC (End Local Communist Armed Conflict) efforts. He said Guerrilla Front 6 in Bukidnon is in the brink of collapse, pointing to the continued surrender of topranking NPA leaders and the fall of several members as indicators. “Joma [Jose Maria Sison] is singing his own praises. The rising number of Guerilla Fronts that Joma boastfully claimed is now waning. Jamby revealed that 18 KRBs (Kilusang Rebolusyonaryong Barangay or CPP ‘shadow government’) that she personally established in Bukidnon were dismantled due to the people’s withdrawal of membership in their “KalMas (Kalihokang Masa)” and “Sanga sa Partido sa Lokalidad (SPL),” BGen. De Leon said. Jamby and Jigger, along with their five comrades, were presented by Valencia City officials to Gov. Jose Ma. Zubiri Jr as Provincial Chairman of the Enhanced Comprehensive Local Inte-
gration Program (ECLIP) Committee. After thorough profiling, the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office will determine the package of assistance that would suit the needs of these FRs (former rebels), which the military now calls “Kauban sa kalinaw ug kalamboan.” Major General Franco Nemesio Gacal, 4ID Commander commended the 403rd Brigade, the 88IB, and the local government unit of Bukidnon for winning the peaceful war. “Our war is not focused on winning battles through the barrel of guns. Ours is a peaceful war involving communities in conflictaffected areas. We, together with local leaders and our constituents, join hands and commit to battle land issues, poverty, and other problems through dialogue with the right people, organization, and agency,” MGen. Gacal said. (RLRBalistoy/PIA Bukidnon)

ON VODKA, BEERS, AND REGRETS
Raise your glasses and toast to love this 2020 as VIVA FILMS reunite JC Santos and Bela Padilla in this exciting screen project, ON VODKA, BEERS, AND REGRETS. The movie follows the story of Jane Pineda, a washed up actress and former child star whose career hits rock bottom. Struggling to get movie roles and trying to escape from a big scandal, Jane seeks comfort in alcohol. Then one drunken night at a bar, she meets Francis, vocalist of a band. Suddenly, things
started to change for Jane. She now finds comfort in Francis’ company. For his part, Francis, who’s with Jane drunk or sober, is more than willing to love her. But will his love be enough to keep Jane or will his love fall short and in the end, he will lose her? ON VODKA, BEERS, AND REGRETS is the third on-screen pairing of JC Santos and Bela Padilla. Their first movie was 100 TULA PARA KAY STELLA, an official entry to the Pista ng Pelikulang
Pilipino. Their tandem was such a huge hit that there was a clamor to
see them paired anew, so in 2018, moviegoers were treated to another Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino official entry - THE DAY AFTER VALENTINE’S. But as it was with their previous collaboration, hopeless romantics were left brokenhearted yet again. So this 2020, will those lovesick fans finally get the happy ending they want to see for JC and Bela? Or will there be another collective sigh of dashed hopes and broken hearts courtesy of ON VODKA, BEERS, AND REGRETS? On January 3, 2020
VIVA Films posted on their Facebook page the teaser trailer for ON VODKA, BEERS, AND REGRETS and in just 3 hours, the teaser had more than 900,000 views and was shared by over 30,000 people. Within 24 hours, the film’s teaser has already reached 4 million views across all social media platforms, making it one of the most-anticipated films at the start of the year. Fans will be delighted to find out this movie is written and directed by Irene Emma Villamor, who was responsible for a string of box-
office hits like SID & AYA: NOT A LOVE STORY, MEET ME IN ST. GALLEN and CAMP SAWI. Adding a fresh dose of excitement to the movie, VIVA’s rising star Raphiel Shannon was asked to sing the movie’s soundtrack “Mundo”, the smash hit single back in 2018 by IV of Spades. So prepare for a heady mix of love and, who knows, maybe a hint of heartbreak yet again, that only JC and Bela can serve on-screen when you watch ON VODKA, BEERS, AND REGRETS in cinemas on February 5.
