MisOr to build P90-M sports oval facility

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY - The provincial government of Misamis Oriental will pursue its construction of a PHP90-million worth track and field oval facility in Balingasag town of the province as part of its sports development program.

In a statement Friday, the provincial government said the fund will be sourced from the Special Education Fund of the provincial Local School Board and built within the compound of the Balingasag Central School.

Cops nab US citizen in CdeO, arrest most wanted suspects in Bukidnon

POLICE authorities arrested an American citizen who was found to be coddling minors inside his condominium unit in Cagayan de Oro City.

Lt. Col. Lemuel Gonda, acting chief of the Northern Mindanao Police - AntiCybercrime Unit (RACU10), said in an interview that they will be filing criminal charges against Sebastian Alexander Altamirano, who claimed to have a residence in Barangay Camaman-an.

Gonda said police raided Altamirano’s condominium unit and found three minors aged 13, 16, and 17,

who were unrelated to him.

Operatives also found from the suspect’s possession assorted gadgets that were allegedly used to exploit the three victims.

He said the police acted on a complaint lodged by a 34-year-old mother.

Pasion said the person referred to as case number four underwent RT-PCR swab test last December 11, 2021 with her specimen sent to the UP-PGC only last December 23, 2021 and confirmed the Omicron variant of the COVID-19 infection.

“Persons with flu-like symptoms must isolate right-away to prevent transmission,” she said.

However, Pasion said the RT-PCR testing remains the gold-standard to confirm that one’s infection is COVID-19.

Caraga starts rehab of rice farms hit by ‘Odette’

BUTUAN CITY – The Department of Agriculture - Caraga (DA-13) on Thursday reported the arrival of 1,500 bags of certified seeds that will be distributed to rice farmers whose farms were devastated by Typhoon Odette.

In a statement, the DA-13 said the certified rice seeds came from the agriculture offices in Region 12 (Soccsksargen) and Region 11 (Davao Region).

OneDA unifies food security, logistics plan for NorMin CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The Department of Agriculture and its attached agencies, bureaus, and corporations in Northern Mindanao met on Wednesday, January 12, to craft a unified Regional Food Security and Logistics Plan for the year 2022.

DA-10 Regional Executive Director Carlene C. Collado called on the said gathering in response to the identified action areas to mitigate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, African Swine Fever, and Typhoon Odette on the region’s food production and movement of basic food commodities.

The plan is guided by the region’s supply and demand situation with the ultimate goal of

food availability and affordability.

The key activities of the said plan include the continuation of the issuance of food passes, improvement and mobilization of Kadiwa, close monitoring of planting and production areas, ascertaining NFA buffer stocks, availability of buffer seeds stocks (rice, corn, and vegetables) for the wet season.

Social Change to Democratize Wealth & Power

AS the Pandemic has put the country in so much disarray, it has become imperative for all of us Filipinos to have even a little reflection on the socio, economic. political and ecological realities besetting our country. Even prior to the pandemic, the Social Weather Station, in a survey disclosed that 17 million Filipinos are subsisting on $1/day while 43 million on $2/day. It also disclosed that 15% of household heads reported that their families had experienced hunger, without having anything to eat, at least once in the last three months. In Northern Mindanao, The Mindanao Daily in its January 11 issue bannered that the “poor population in the region has reached 33.8% or some 1.72 million individuals living below the poverty threshold. Around 312,000 poor families and some 130,000 families cannot afford their basic food needs.”

As stated by development experts, “despite years, efforts and funds to fight it, abject poverty continues to afflict our country such that it has become a second skin to more than a third of our people. We have made no significant headways in improving our quality of life.

Poverty is one of the main culprits behind the sad tale that is told too much too often- the thief to many a child’s dreams.

We have to reverse the poverty trend which is worse in Mindanao that is suffering high poverty gap ratios than the rest of the country.

In fact, 14 of the poorest provinces in the country are found in Mindanao.

Many of the children about 85% are malnourished, a great paradox in an island that has been described as “food basket,” and where 2/3 of total exports are coming from. The 200,000-ha. plantations in Mindanao are the ones supplying the consumerists’ needs of the people in advanced countries, i.e., pineapple, banana, palm oil, etc. but we cannot even satisfy the basic staple needs of the people, i.e., rice and milk. With the onslaught of the pandemic and typhoon Odette, there is now an unprecedented demand for food, water, shelter and job for some nine million Filipinos,” as indicated in the Human Development Indicators.

Our survival as a people is now at stake. Our country has already lost our ecological security, the Philippines being the 4th worst hit by climate change in the whole world based on the UN Disaster Risk Index. We have no more food security as our ecological people particularly the peasantry and the fisherfolk, especially the young ones have already left farming and fishing, to work in the urban centers that are now becoming highly congested. Indeed, farming has become economically non-viable anymore as during the height of the harvest seasons, because of Rice Tariffication Law, millions of tons of cheaply produced rice are being dumped in our country through corporate globalization. and of climate change.

Despite these painful realities, all focus is now on the “big circus” called Philippine elections that saw politicians doing gimmicks of opening-up the “floodgates” of their fund reservoir to finance campaign shows that would include movie stars and assembling their political machineries for massive propaganda and vote-buying. Such outpouring of funds is easily recovered once they are back in power. We must now discard all illusions that such exercise of our right of suffrage will make a difference in effecting the much needed social transformation. Let us not be deceived by the gospel of information and disinformation as elections in this country are just seeing the outpourings of illusions through body languages and rhetorical style, centered on personalities and never on platforms on social transformation.

It is only by harnessing the collective power of the people that social change can be had. But first the people must be well-informed and conscienticized. But how?

In the Old Testament laws recorded in Leviticus and Exodus, just to mention these two, seem dull and long-winded. These were the entire set of laws , as far as I can tell you. Their most striking feature to a lawyer is brevity and simplicity. You don’t have to study law to understand them.

In comparison with laws from other countries at that time, the Old Testament made a considerable advance. Indeed, these laws have greatly influenced laws of our days: People were more important than property. There was no class system, The punishment fit the crime. Sexuality mattered. The poor and the weak had protection.

Yes, attitudes as well as actions mattered. One of my favorite quotations from Leviticus is 19:33-34: “When

USTP launches masterplan for 3 S&T Parks CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- The University of Science and Technology of the Southern Philippines System (USTP) recently launched its masterplan for the upcoming Science and Technology Parks to be situated in three sites, namely the AGILA (Alubijid, Gitagum, Laguindingan), Claveria Agropolis, and Villanueva S&T Park.

The launching was held during the Science and Industry Summit which gathered researchers, industry practitioners, policymakers and planners, USTP community and its partners.

“The theme of our Science and Industry Summit is “Trailblazing Innovation Ecosystems in Northern Mindanao.” In this summit, we hope to foster and share our knowledge in Science and Industry,” said USTP Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Maria Elena L. Paulma.

Carino also expressed support to the said endeavor saying, “In our effort to establish a one-stop government center, the Regional Development Council of Northern Mindanao which is the highest policy-making body of the region approved the proposed Regional Government Center within the USTP property in Alubijid, Misamis Oriental.”

To support this, the USTP prepared three volumes of the AGILA S&T Park Land Use Infrastructure Plan detailing the profile and situation analysis

MANILA – Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Ramon Lopez believes that vaccines will not only save lives during the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic but also jobs for Filipinos.

During the launch of “Resbakuna sa Botika” at Southstar Drug in Marikina City Thursday, Lopez highlighted the critical role of vaccines in helping the economy to remain open despite the surge in Covid-19 cases due to the Omicron variant.

“We now see in Omicron, cases increased to 35,000 but only below 2,000 are severe and critical. During Delta (surge), that immediately rose to 3,000 to 4,000 cases, but now it is only at 2,000,” he said in Filipino.

Government data show that as of January 16, around 1,780 cases were severe and critical despite active Covid-19 cases climbing to 287,856.

SSS promotes its online channels amid rise in COVID-19 cases

A Tale of Two Victims: Lacson Digs Deeper into Lolo Narding’s Case

THE Social Security System (SSS) is once again urging its members, pensioners, and employers to use its online services as the country continues to record a high number of COVID-19 cases.

SSS President and CEO Aurora C. Ignacio said transacting with the SSS using its online channels is the simplest, safest, and most convenient option for SSS stakeholders.

“Through our online channels, our stakeholders can avail of our services without the need to go out of their homes or offices, minimizing their risk of exposure to COVID-19,” Ignacio said.

Among SSS’ online channels are the My.SSS Portal at www.sss.gov.ph, SSS Mobile App, and uSSSap Tayo Portal at https://crms.sss.gov.ph.

Using the My.SSS Portal, members, pensioners, and employers can access their SSS information including contributions, loans, and status of benefit claims or reimbursement; open the Disbursement Account Enrollment Module (DAEM) and Benefit Re-Disbursement Module (BRM); and generate Payment Reference Numbers (PRNs) for contributions and loans.

Members may also submit Maternity Notifications (for individual members), Maternity Benefit Applications and Adjustment of Maternity Benefit, Sickness Benefit Applications, Funeral Benefit Applications, Retirement Benefit Applications (subject to qualifying conditions for online filing), Salary Loan Applications, Calamity Loan Applications, and Pension Loan Applications (for renewal), among others.

On the other hand, employers may also submit Contribution Collection Lists (R3), Employment Reports (R1A), Loan Collection Lists (ML2), SS Sickness Benefit Reimbursement Applications, and Maternity Benefit Reimbursement Applications; and certify their employees’ Retirement Benefit and Salary Loan Applications, among others.

Currently, there are over 30 member services and nearly 20 employer services available in the My.SSS Portal. Some of these services can also be accessed through

the SSS Mobile App. Meanwhile, the uSSSap Tayo Portal, a self-service platform, enables SSS stakeholders and the public to conveniently find relevant SSS information to answer their questions and access a facility to communicate with the SSS for their additional concerns.

The uSSSap Tayo Portal has three sections, namely the Knowledgebase Section, which contains information about SSS programs and services, including a getting started guide, stepby-step and how-to articles, and troubleshooting information; the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) Section, where users can access answers to common SSS queries; and the Viewing and Submission of Tickets Section that allow users to check the status of their concerns or create additional tickets.

Online and alternative payment channels for SSS contributions and loans are also available. One of which is through the SSS Mobile App, wherein self-employed, voluntary, and Overseas Filipino Worker members can pay their contributions using their PayMaya account, GCash account, Credit Card/Debit Card, or Bank of the Philippine Islands account. January 21, 2022 - A victim of poverty, and a victim of bullying due to “disinformation.” This is the latest sad twist in the case of Lolo Narding Floro, who went viral after he was arrested for stealing three sacks of mangoes from a property in Asingan town in Pangasinan.

Partido Reporma Chairman and standard-bearer Sen. Panfilo “Ping” M. Lacson bared Thursday that there is a second victim in the case - Robert Hong, the caretaker of the lot from where the mangoes were taken.

Hong - who lodged a complaint against Floro for stealing three sacks of mangoes in April last year - is now in hiding after the story of Floro became viral, as he is now being bullied by bloggers and netizens, noted Lacson, who initiated his own investigation in Asingan town on Thursday.

“Before offering any assistance to resolve Lolo Narding’s problem, I would like to know the facts first,” Lacson said.

“Both Lolo Narding and Robert are victims. Lolo Narding can be considered a victim of poverty, while Robert, the new caretaker and complainant represent-

Thus he is also a victim - in this case, of bullying stemming from unintended inaccurate information,” Lacson said, citing initial information reaching him.

Lacson said his investigation showed Hong, as caretaker of the property, filed a complaint against Floro for stealing three sacks of mangoes before selling

them in the local talipapa (market) in April 2021.

“Robert’s family says he is willing to settle but requests that the apparent disinformation be rectified.

Meanwhile, Lolo Narding couldn’t settle with the property owner through the caretaker because he already spent the proceeds in the amount of P7,000,” he said, even as he noted the Public Information Office of Asingan town has apologized to Hong for the bashing he has suffered online.

“This should also be an

eye-opener for us. On social media, things may not always be what they seem at first glance,” Lacson added.

On the other hand, Lacson lamented that Lolo Narding’s case was a microcosm of Philippine society where the poor who steal out of necessity are arrested quickly while the wealthy and corrupt remain scotfree. “May nagnanakaw out of necessity. Ako naniniwala na kung ganoon ang reason, they deserve a second chance. Ang nakakagalit ng loob, ang nagnakaw ng malaking halaga sa pera ng gobyerno (There are those who steal out of poverty and necessity and I believe they deserve a second chance. But what makes my blood boil are those who steal huge amounts of money, and from public funds to boot),” he said in an interview on Bombo Radyo Philippines Thursday morning.

Lacson said the first step to correct this is to clean the bureaucracy of corruption so the criminal justice system may be implemented fairly and properly. But this must be accompanied by a change in mindset on the part of the people - to demand accountability from public servants.

Classroom education is increasingly moving away from lecturing at learners to a more collaborative project based model and digital technology plays a fundamental role in this. Despite the many benefits of using the Internet and other digital technologies there are also a number of dangers that pupils face.

which teachers should have a good knowledge of in order to be able to help learners deal with issues if they arise – and to encourage them to be responsible Web users.

And of course, with the alternative work arrangements being implemented, in which we have now the privilege to work at the comfort of our homes, we must really consider trying and doing physical activities and breaks every now and then, it could be as simple

as walking and trying home workouts as possible.

In this time of pandemic, we are all managing additional stress related to the growth of the COVID-19 pandemic and its potential to threaten the health of ourselves, our families, and our communities. Please, let us consider using and doing physical activity and exercise as a strategy to maintain health during this stressful period.

Although many things may feel beyond our control right now, we do have the ability to be creative and to build physical activity and exercise into each of our days. The COVID-19 pandemic has led teachers to an unpredictable scenario where the lockdown situation has accelerated the shift from traditional to online educational methods, and relationships have been altered by the avoidance of direct contact with the others, with implications for their mental health.

Physical activity seemed to be a factor that could prevent mental disorders such as anxiety or depression in this peculiar situation.

Between the unpredictability, the isolation and the newfound challenges in reaching their learners – not only the mental health experts worry but everyone is also struggling – what little mental health support is extended to teachers feels like nowhere near enough. As this pandemic encompasses a big challenge to the education system around the world, our teachers, our learning facilitators, and the prime movers of education are also suffering and struggling.

Thus, it is very vital that we should intensify awareness on the mental health of our

teachers, as their state of mind and body will greatly affect their work performance.

One significant strategy is to boost our physical activity.

As we spend hours in a day and even in the wee hours of the night just to finish all the reports and deliverables on our assigned tasks, it is very important that we as teachers and education prime movers should do various physical exercises and activities in order to keep our minds and bodies healthy and active.

With this, studies show that it can be concluded from previous experiences that physical activity and exercise could help to mitigate the effects caused by the current pandemic on the mental and physical health of citizens worldwide. According to Amatriain-Fernández (2020), being physically active should be highly recommended considering that physical activity could help in preventing psychological or mood disorders and improving the quality of life by decreasing the negative psychosocial effects of lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Indeed, educators are in the midst of one of the most challenging and overwhelming times in the academe history. Without face-to-face classes, students also are being affected with this change, everyone is.

By now, it is evident that the global pandemic has created an unprecedented challenge for school leaders.

Although, School Heads are used to handling smaller crises such as fights in the hallway, irate students, and disagreements, but with this pandemic, school leaders have never dealt with a crisis of this scale and this scope for this long.

However, amidst the pandemic, the Department of Education still intensifies student leadership through various programs, projects, and activities through the Youth Formation Division.

Although, leading through

uncertainty can be dauntingthere are no easy solutions, and often no clear paths to follow. How do we lead when we can’t predict what’s going to happen next? Uncertainty requires leaders, especially student leaders, to adapt quickly to a rapidly changing situation, and to draw on different skills and types of leadership. When faced with uncertainty, school leaders need to deal with immediate, while remaining focused on the future, in order to achieve the best possible teaching and learning environment, and positive outcomes for students.

With this, let us hold on to our faith that everything will be okay in the right time.

While waiting for that time, let us all be positive, patient, and resilient along the way.

Our dear students are also dealing with their personal struggles aside from the academic challenges, thus, let us be each other’s inspiration and aspiration to continue life amidst uncertainties and difficulties.

Agus Bridge III, also known to locals as the Pumping Bridge, costs P79.5 million and has a total length of 70 meters and a width of 15 meters. It now consists of four lanes replacing the old two-lane bridge damaged by the Marawi siege in 2017.

Engr. Diron said the completion of the Pumping Bridge would be beneficial as it will reduce traffic congestion in the city particularly in entering the most affected area.

The repair and widening of the bridge is part of the rehabilitation efforts for the war-torn city. It was funded under the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management - Marawi Recovery, Rehabilitation, and Reconstruction Program.

The other two bridges on Agus River, Agus I bridge (Banggolo Bridge) and Agus II bridge (Matampay Bridge) were earlier opened to traffic.

(AC Health) is opening its doors to priority groups during the week-long pilot of the “Resbakuna sa Botika” program of the National Task Force Against COVID-19 beginning Thursday, January 20.

Generika Drugstore’s branch in Signal Village, Taguig City was opened as a pilot site for “Resbakuna sa Botika.” QualiMed Clinic - Makati and Healthway Multi-Specialty Center Manila will also open their doors on January 21, as pilot clinic sites to priority groups who want to avail of COVID-19 vaccine shots.

During this weeklong program, each of the branches will be allocated 500 doses of COVID-19 vaccines by their partner LGUs. Individuals 18 years old and above - except for senior citizens and people with comorbidities - can pre-register, in coordination with their LGU, and avail
