MisOr officially kicks off 9th Kuyamis Festival 2022 MISAMIS ORIENTAL -The Provincial Government of Misamis Oriental officially kicked off its 9th annual Kuyamis Festival during its 92nd founding anniversary commemoration at the Provincial Capitol Park, January 10.

“Kuyamis Festival is a source of pride and inspiration for Misamisons, for this festival has established a cultural identity of Misamis Oriental, this festival has become one of the great reasons for people to explore MisOr,” said Provincial Tourism Chief and 9th Kuyamis Festival Chairman Jeffrey Saclot.

9 dead, 33 injured in a road accident in Balingasag town

BALINGASAG, Misamis Oriental – At least nine persons were confirmed dead and 33 others were injured when an elf truck carrying 42 passengers accidentally lost its brakes in sitio Bagaay, Barangay Baliwagan, in Balingasag town, this province.

The identities of those who died and those who were injured from the accident have yet to be verified.

ILIGAN CITY -- Families affected by typhoon Odette here thanked the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) through its Revenue District Office (RDO) 101 for their outpouring assistance.

Rohaima Panandigan of Barangay Mandulog expressed gratitude to the RDO 101 for the support extended to them. According to her, the onslaught of ‘Odette’ caused their house to vanish.

“Maraming salamat sa tulong ng BIR. Malaking halaga itong tulong sa amin kasi inaasahan lang namin iyong sweldo ng asawa ko,” said Panandigan.

[Thank you very much for the help of the BIR. This is a big help to us because we only rely on my husband’s salary for our needs.]

Jennifer Estrellanes, a resident of Barangay Dalipuga, recounted how the typhoon damaged their house, forcing them to relocate due to the risk of landslides in their location.

She said the relief aid is helpful for them as they have difficulty in recovering from the incident.

“Dako kaayo mig pasalamat sa BIR. Dako kaayo ang i-katabang sa karon na perti pang kalisod na naa ang ilang gipanghatag,” she said.

BUTUAN CITY – Amid the government’s continuing relief mission in Typhoon Odette-devastated areas, residents of Del Carmen town in Siargao Island of Surigao del Norte province received their cash aid Tuesday from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) through the agency’s Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS) program.

In a statement, the DSWD - Caraga (Region 13) said a total of PHP16,710,000 in AICS assistance was released during the pay-out activity that benefited 3,542 families severely affected by Typhoon Odette in December last year.

Last December 30, the agency also released through the AICS program some PHP23,010,000 in cash aid to 4,602 families in Dapa town in Siargao Island.

Also, the agency reported that a total of 400 laminated sacks and 379 family tents were also provided to the affected families in the towns of San Jose, Tubajon, Libjo, Basilisa, and Loreta in the province of Dinagat Islands.

The laminated sacks and family tents were augmented during the three-day distribution activity conducted by the agency in Dinagat Islands from January 7 to 9 this year.

The augmentation of the non-food items was based on the request by local government units (LGUs), the agency pointed out.

DOT exec: MisOr’s tourism, a key factor to tourism circuit MISAMIS ORIENTAL -Department of Tourism (DOT)-10 Regional Director Marie Elaine S. Unchuan said during the opening of the ‘9th Kuyamis Festival and Taho sa Katawhan’ that Misamis Oriental is now a key component in both inter-and intra-regional tourism circuit development.

“For the past five years, we always stood in awe as we visited many tourism gems of Misamis Oriental. While exploring the province, we have made new and amazing discoveries creating pos-

sibilities which have made the province rise to its full potential as a tourism hub that is worthy of international renown,” Unchuan said.

Gov. Yevgeny Vincente Emano has likewise emphasized that tourism is one of his administration’s flagship programs that has paved the way for the tourism industry to flourish and be recognized nationally.

The tourism chief, thus, said the province has a lot of potential as a tourism hub in the region because of the beauty that nature provides,

as well as the wonderful people and hospitality that they extend to everyone.

The tourism gems she said had left DOT Region 10 in awe as they continued to explore its majestic spots over the years.

The Omicron variant is a kind of mutated COVID19 virus first discovered in South Africa last November 2021. Studies showed that Omicron is highly contagious and can even skip immune protection.

The DOH clarified that there is no data that would differentiate symptoms of Omicron variant from the other COVID19 variants.

PH Eagle released back into Zambo Norte’s wild

GODOD, Zamboanga del Norte – Onlookers were in a festive mood as officials of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), assisted by Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF) personnel, released a female Philippine Eagle back into the wild here.

The eagle, named “Godod,” was released around 10:30 a.m. Monday in an upland barangay here, Almario Caabay Jr. of the Provincial Environment and Resources Office (PENRO) said, is located 5,500 meters above sea level.

“Usually, we don’t reveal the location where we release a wildlife back to the natural habitat so as not to give an idea to the hunters,” Rosevirico Tan, DENR regional information officer, told the Philippine News Agency (PNA) in an interview.

Dr. Ernest Duldulao, DENR’s Regional Wildlife Rescue Center resident veterinarian, physically examined Godod before she was freed.

“She is healthy and ready to return to the wild,” he said.

Godod, before flying back to the wild, stood for several minutes on the wooden release platform

and looked back, giving spectators an opportunity to have their last look at the eagle and take photographs and video.

The spectators included officials of the DENR headed by Ronald Gadot, assistant regional director for technical services, PEF personnel, and Godod Mayor Abel Matildo, among others.

Dionisio Rago, head of the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO)-Liloy, said the eagle was named after the town since the bird was accidentally trapped

and captured by a Subanen farmer on Dec. 5, 2021 in Sitio Makinaryas, Barangay Bunawan.

Rago said the wildlife was confirmed as a Philippine Eagle based on the photographs given to them by the Godod Municipal Tourism Office.

He said they immediately sent a team and retrieved the wildlife in coordination with the 44th Infantry Battalion on December 16 at the height of Typhoon Odette.

Another roller coaster life

LIFE is literally just like a roller coaster. We go up, we go down. We wait for a time when it all evens out and we can trust that the falls are over. It doesn’t come.

Yes, nowadays, for many of us life is indeed an emotional roller coaster. All over the world. Political instability, wars, terror attacks, climate change with extreme natural disasters, questionable global economical situations, illnesses AND diseases... .

Questions about how to proceed and move on and nobody really has a correct answer. How then?

As usual, a day starts with a traffic jam and continues with terrible conditions at any workplace. The crab mentality seems to have become nothing unusual now. In any case: everyone for himself. Each one by himself/herself/itself alone is quite nice, but together...?

Do we have a problem? So what! It’s not everyone’s cup of tea.

Life seems to be nothing, just being ready to riddle one with bullets.

Life seems to be nothing, just being broken through indifference and unreliable and immoral behavior. Life seems to be nothing for

those people who don’t understand cries from the heart of other people around them - cries for their hearts and families, for justice and for many other things.

Life with all its ups and downs, is just a loan, but for many of our fellow creatures it just seems to be nonsense to be littered like a dump. And, if people try to survive, especially during these days, and if they just experienced (once more!) indifference, arrogance, ignorance or cheating by whomever - they will give up!

I can assure you that every one of us can at first help in prayers and in reading the bible. “Proverbs” is the probably most downto-earth book in the bible.

Its teachings prepare you for daily life, the street and the market place, but not for the schoolroom. The book offers warm pieces of advice you get; practical guidance for making your way on earth. Proverbs covers any kinds of questions you might have right now.

Anybody can relate to the generalities of Proverbs, because this book simply tells how life works most of the time.

I observed that more and m ore p e opl e st r u g g l e through life: tired, hopeless, experiencing their rock-bottoms, believing in fallacious “people” around them. Can a roller coaster go on forever?

We all know, though, that roller coaster rides don’t last forever. That’s because the roller coaster loses energy to other forces as it does loop-the-loops, curves, and other hills along the way. This friction slows the roller coaster gradually, as does the air that you fly through as you ride the ride.

Our emotions can feel like a roller coaster ride when we allow our thoughts and fantasies to get the better of us. This had been the case of the ecological people in the uplands of Cagayan de Oro and Bukidnon when upon knowing that indeed, there was no such thing as rule of law in environment, they readily took direct actions through human barricades to stop the massive flow of illegally-cut logs.

No less than His Eminence Archbishop Antonio Ledesma, S.J., who was then a priest and the Director of SEARSOLIN in 1991 reported to us that some fifty ten-wheeler trucks carrying illegally cut logs were passing Cagayan de Oro from twelve midnight to four o’clock in the morning as he instructed his staff to monitor. When a security guard took pictures of these trucks, an armed escort ran after the guard. Thus, no way can deforestation be stopped but through people’s direct actions.

For ten-years, human barricades went on, beginning first in 1991 with some 300 farmers, Indigenous People and fisherfolk, lying in the street and dared logging trucks to run-over them before these 50 logging trucks every night

Then, in 1999, the number of barricades went up to 6,000 and finally, we put in clear categorical term the statement, “The people united can never be defeated.” Finally, the rule of law won. Why? This time, the people direct actions are not anymore on barricading logging trucks. The systems and structures that perpetuate oppression, social injustice and poverty are still as formidable as ever.

Three questions should now be asked: Who Controls? Who Decides? Who Profits?

CDeO Food Vendors Receive Solar-Powered Vending Carts from DOST 10 THE Department of Science and Technology regional office 10 turned over solarpowered vending carts to six ambulant street food vendors on January 7, 2021, at the Office for Senior Citizen Affairs, Cagayan de Oro City, Misamis Oriental.

The project “Build Back Better Vending Carts” is in partnership with the City Government of Cagayan de Oro. The City Social Welfare and Development (CSWD) office screened the recipients from among the long list of street food vendors all around the city. The screening included background checks, good standing records, on-site visits, and interviews.

TRANSCO teams up with DepEd on high-speed internet for public schools

THE National Transmission Corp. (Transco) has succeeded in testing and applying emerging ICT technologies that will make use of existing power line infrastructures to help the Department of Education (DepEd) to implement the Public Education Network program of DepEd that will provide connectivity and high-speed internet to public schools nationwide amid the pandemic.

Transco President-CEO Melvin Matibag said the Public Education Network-C ommunications Infrastructure for Learning (PEN-CIL) project would address the challenges of DepEd in ensuring the continuity of learning amid the

pandemic and the expected transition to the New Normal by providing internet connectivity in all public schools.

He said Transco would be involved through its Project Lightning in designing, developing and operating the PEN-CIL system with the goal of making the country’s basic education system more resilient especially in times of calamities and crises. The internet system will be developed with the cooperation of the electric cooperatives nationwide by lending to the government their power lines for the high-speed internet connection that will prioritize the remote rural areas that are expected to be left out

by the Telcos due to commercial viability issues.

PH economy seen growing 6-7% in 2022

MANILA – The Philippine economy is expected to return to its 6 to 7-percent growth trajectory in 2022 after nearly two years of grappling with the pandemic despite the threat of the Omicron variant, according to the investment banking arm of the Metrobank Group.

First Metro Investment Corporation (FMIC) said this year’s economic growth will be driven by sustained domestic demand, easing inflation, election expenditures, and accelerated government spending on infrastructure projects.

“Notwithstanding the ongoing pandemic, and Omicron sparking the third wave of infections, we are still optimistic that Philippine growth will further accelerate and get back on its trajectory of 6-7 percent in 2022,” FMIC president Jose Patricio Dumlao said in a virtual briefing Tuesday.

Dumlao said the economy registered a 4.9-percent growth in the first three quarters of 2021 and the growth momentum likely spilled over in the fourth quarter given further economic reopening and easing mobility restrictions.

He added business and consumer confidence are also cautiously positive given wider availability

of vaccines and relaxation of lockdowns, quarantine measures, and mobility restrictions.

University of Asia and the Pacific (UA&P) economist Dr. Victor Abola said the 6 to 7 percent gross domestic product (GDP) projection this year will be led by the industry sector --both construction and manufacturing.

Abola said services will still be the lagging sector as the pandemic measures hit hotels and restaurants.

“The Philippine situation is that there is recovery but still on the way to reach the pre-pandemic levels,” he said.

The countr y’s GDP posted a -9.5 percent fullyear growth rate in 2020 compared to its 5.9 percent pre-pandemic performance in 2019.

THE Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) warns the public that printing images bearing the facsimile or likeness of Philippine banknotes may result in legal action.

Pursuant to BSP Circular No. 829, Series of 2014, the act of reproducing the image of any legal tender Philippine currency banknotes, or any part of one, whether in black and white, in color, or combination of colors, without authority or approval from the BSP, is subject to imprisonment of five to 10 years.

This reminder comes after the National Bureau of Investigation, together with the BSP Payments and Currency Investigation Group (PCIG), arrested an individual suspected of selling money or cash envelopes using the image and design of the 1000-Piso New Generation Currency banknote.

The public may be allowed to reproduce images of Philippine banknotes if authorization or approval from the BSP has been secured for educational, historical, numismatic, newsworthy, or other relevant purposes that will maintain, promote, or enhance the integrity and dignity of the Philippine currency.

Lacson: No more undeserving, unqualified gov’t officials once under my presidency PARTIDO Reporma chairman and standard-bearer Panfilo “Ping” Lacson has made it his mission to remove unqualified or undeserving government officials from their posts, especially political appointees, who don’t perform the duties of their office, as he sees this as a form of thievery not only of the nation’s coffers, but also of opportunities that could go to more deserving Filipinos.

In an interview over radio DZXL, Lacson said the “palakasan” and “padrino” (nepotism and patronage) systems still prevail in appointing officials to head government agencies, a system he has vowed to break once he earns the people’s mandate to lead the country following the 2022 national elections.

The longtime public servant said it was important to match an official’s skills with the position he or she was taking on, so that the plans and solutions the official will prepare will truly solve the prevailing problems of the agency he or she will be appointed to.

“Minsan may balasubas pa [na] sa halip na pagaralan ‘yung trabaho niya, pag-aaralan naman paano kikita,” he said of officials who don’t perform their responsibilities properly and even add to the country’s problems with their actions.

Gadot said the Philippine Eagle is territorial and the span of their territory is at least 10,000 hectares of forest.

“They have a territorial area,” Gadot added.

He said there are only an estimated 400 pairs of Philippine Eagle in the country and the Zamboanga Peninsula (Region 9) has four eagle monitoring stations.

The four areas where Philippine Eagles are monitored in the region include the towns of Baliguian and Godod, Midsalip in Zamboanga del Sur, and, the Pasonanca Natural Park in Zamboanga City.

“We are proud of Zamboanga Peninsula that we have monitored four pairs of (Philippine) eagle that are soaring high in our forest showing the region has a rich biodiversity,” Gadot said.

He urged the upland community, especially the indigenous peoples, to help the government protect the Philippine Eagle.

Parent-teacher partnership in the new normal

An effective education policy in the ‘new normal’ therefore requires the development of new adjustment strategies for all key stakeholders. It calls for a renewed collaboration between teachers and parents, who must work together in the best interest of learners.

Parents are a crucial link between children and schools. The importance of a healthy and strong partnership between parents and other caregivers with teachers is a well-recognized and researched topic in education.

Several studies have proven that collaboration between parents and teachers improves children’s academic achievement, work habits, social skills and emotional well-being. As per the OECD Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS) 2018, on average across the OECD, 62% of principals consider that parents or guardians contribute to learner achievement “quite a bit” or “a lot”. Recognizing the importance of collaboration with parents in improving learning outcomes for children several OECD

countries have incorporated guidelines on working with parents in their curriculum framework. Parents are key stakeholders in education, who have the authority to hold schools accountable for their child’s learning.

Children learn best when the significant adults in their lives -- parents, teachers, and other family and community members -- work together to encourage and support them.

This basic fact should be a guiding principle as we think about how schools should be organized and how children should be taught. Schools alone cannot address all of a child’s developmental needs: The meaningful involvement of parents and support from the community are essential.

These days, it can take extraordinary efforts to build strong relationships between families and educators. Schools have to reach out to families, making them feel welcome as full partners in the educational process.

Families, in turn, have to make a commitment of time and energy to support their children both at home and at school.

Intensifying campaign against online bullying among learners

According to Unicef.org, one-third of cyberviolence experienced by Filipino children are in the form of verbal abuse over the internet or cellphone, while a fourth are through sexual messages. More females received messages of sexual nature or content than males. However, twice as many males than females reported having their nude body or sexual activities, whether real or falsified, shown on the internet or cellphone.

Violence against children, in all forms including online bullying or cyberbullying, has devastating effects on the physical and emotional wellbeing of young people.

This can create lasting emotional and psychological scars, even physical harm.

It is particularly challenging to address since children are vulnerable and have easy access to the internet, making them easy targets of online violence.

Sometimes, online bullying, like other kinds of bullying, can lead to serious long-lasting problems. The stress of being in a constant state of upset or fear can lead to problems with mood, energy level, sleep, and appetite.

It also can make someone feel jumpy, anxious, or sad. If someone is already depressed

or anxious, cyberbullying can make things much worse.

As a reminder among learners, if you see something upsetting, try to step away from the computer or turn off your phone for a while. Don’t respond, and never forward the message to someone else.

Find something to distract yourself from what’s going on. Do something you love that doesn’t give you time to think about what’s happening, like playing the guitar, going for a run, or losing yourself in a book or movie.

You can also just chat with a parent or sibling or play with a pet. Walking away or taking a break when you’re faced with online bullying gives you some space so you won’t be tempted to fire back a response or engage with the bully or bullies. Responding when we’re upset can make things worse. Als, standing up to a bully can be effective sometimes, but it’s more likely to provoke the person and escalate the situation.

Taking a break gives the power back to you!

Remember, it is never okay to be bullied or when you are a bully. If you are currently experiencing it, take steps in order to respond and act on it immediately so that its damages will not worsen.

Trust the process in the face of omicron

The sudden shift of distance learning modalities during this covid-19 pandemic brings great interest to study how learners experience the new normal as particularly shaped by the parents and teachers.

Even though the Covid-19 pandemic has affected everybody, our school children are considered a highly susceptible group. Somehow that’s one of the reasons why face-to-face learning modality has been suspended.

Meanwhile, an essential feature of distance learning is that pupils resume their studies at home. In this learning environment, children will be mainly supported by their parents or guardians in their learning activities.

With this, parents, teachers, and school principals all interact with one another to align in the implementation of distance learning modality as highlighted.

More so, when teachers start a positive relationship with parents not only during face-to-face meeting but

especially in this time of pandemic the objectives of education will be attained.

Parents establish children’s learning journey at home, instruct their children, motivate and supervise them with the responsibility and involvement in their children’s endeavor.

Teachers on the other note, play as a team player with the cooperation and collaboration of the parents’ effort. Apparently, teachers help cultivate learners motivation and also as teachers, parents, and school children are facing very different situations now in terms of educational paradigms.

As school children learns at home, teachers shall continue shaping their learning inputs especially on this distance learning modality.

Indeed, cooperation and commitment between teachers and parents in the pursuit of serving the best education to the learners needs to be a collaborative effort to reap the full benefits of distance learning.

School leadership in the new normal

Educators are in the midst of one of the most challenging and overwhelming times in the profession’s history. Due to the ever-changing conditions of the pandemic, teachers and schools are continuously forced to adapt in order to safely educate learners.

Learners have shown just how hungry they are to connect, learn, and grow. Classroom and school leaders are courageously showing up to lead and create innovative, ever-evolving plans to ensure learners are receiving deeply meaningful learning experiences.

As current school leaders, we acknowledge our perspective is centered around building a comprehensive school culture. We celebrate teachers as the leaders of their classroom. We encourage teachers to consider adapting the shared resources when

cultivating the culture in their classroom.

And with this change comes the need to find new ways to build trust. Trust is built when an environment feels safe and consistent.

Through consistency can one feel confident enough to let their guard down. Educators can no longer work to create a consistent routine to build trust, because the reality is, nothing is consistent in a pandemic.

As a response to the everchanging reality of education during COVID-19, educators must reevaluate traditional methods of relationship building and explore new ways to intentionally work to create trust during COVID. As we’ve led through this pandemic, we found that trust can be effectively and more strongly built by being vulnerably transparent.

ALL of us in education remember March 2020. It was the beginning of the pandemic and, as schools closed down, the end of teaching as we knew it. At the time, honestly, it felt like a much needed and welcomed break.

Eleven years into teaching, I was tired. Teaching, being a literacy coach, running dance club and school fundraisers had taken their toll, and the thought of an extended summer felt like the universe giving all of us a chance to rest. To breathe.

I mean, it was just going to last for a couple of weeks, right?

Fast forward almost two years, and man, do I wish the universe would help again, this time with a return to normal. A time when there were no masks, so students didn’t have barriers to learning phonics skills or facial cues, so they could see their teacher smiling at them to start the day. A time when assigned seating at lunch wasn’t mandatory in order to support contact tracing

for COVID exposure. A time when large amounts of student absences weren’t expected daily and the practice of constantly being OK with living in ambiguity wasn’t the norm.

But it is.

When this school year started, the hope of returning to some normalcy quickly vanished. I was faced with the reality that the trauma that our students had faced in the last two years—the real life ping-pong ball style of education, bouncing from remote learning, to hybrid, to in person, and heightened social-emotional needs—had taken its toll on all of us in ways we couldn’t even imagine. Our “surge capacity” had been depleted. How could this be? The “hope and zest” that I was known for was gone. The desire for doing big, ridiculous projects was drained. The “magic” that I pride myself on bringing to the classroom had disappeared, and, truly, I was scared.

Could I do this anymore?

Coping up with the “pandemic stress”

We all develop patterned responses to things that worry us. Keep in mind that responses are neither “good” nor “bad”—stress responses are different ways we’ve adapted to threatening circumstances. Knowing your stress response can help you determine the best coping strategies that align with your needs.

Develop a mental health plan that fits your current stress response and needs.

Remember that your response and needs may also change over the coming weeks and months. When it’s accessible, also feel and express gratitude, compassion, and hope. Recognize that most people—yourself included—are doing their best with the knowledge that they have. The goal is to have a good enough plan, not a perfect one!

Coming up with a structured plan for each day with clear boundaries between your working and private life will give you a sense of control amid the uncertainty.

Try to divide your day into small activities and make

sure you build in time to do things you enjoy, from pursuing your hobbies or exercising to spending time with your children or pets.

Thus, one must set a daily routine for work: take regular breaks, leave your desk for lunch, and have a fixed time to turn off. Additionally, focus on getting enough sleep and regularly eating healthy meals.

Moreover, excessively checking updates of coronavirus news can leave you stressed and emotionally exhausted. Try to make a conscious effort to disconnect and build healthy news habits: turn off push notifications from news apps, seek factual information from trusted sources and set specific times for checking the news. Watch the news with others to discuss any worries you might have and to avoid anxious thoughts going unchecked. Another tip is to look for positive, uplifting stories and good news amid the pandemic.

Celebrating positive stories can boost your mood and well-being.
