FDA warns vs. cosmetics with banned ingredients

DAVAO CITY – The Food and Drug Administration in Davao Region (FDA11) warned the public on Wednesday against the use of cosmetic products containing banned ingredients, which are considered health hazards.

Village watchmen tapped for ASF checkpoints in DavOr

DAVAO CITY – To ensure that the province of Davao Oriental will remain free of African swine fever (ASF) virus, the provincial government conducted a veterinary quarantine procedure training for village watchmen or “barangay tanod” on Monday.

Some 30 barangay tanod members, also residents of the barangays where the checkpoints were strategically installed, participated in the training held at the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) Operation Center.

In a statement sent on Tuesday, the said personnel will serve as additional manpower to become force multipliers in enforcing quarantine procedures for the ASF in the province.

Provincial veterinarian, Dr. Eric Dagmang said the training will strengthen the enforcement of the checkpoints in the entry and exit points of the province.

“This has long been planned by the province

after the ASF-affected the livestock in our neighboring provinces, like Davao Occidental and Davao del Sur, and portion in Calinan, Davao City,” Dagmang said.

He also added that even before ASF hit Mindanao, there were already measures implemented in the province, like the creation of the ASF Task Force, and the banning of pork and pork products from ASFaffected areas.

However, since the quarantine is only a portion of the many tasks of the law enforcers, the province is capacitating personnel who will not only augment the manpower but also efficiently implement the ASF quarantine at the checkpoints.

“These checkpoints are located in Barangay Maylaya in Cateel town, Barangay Carmen in Boston town, Barangay Pintatagan in Banaybanay, and Barangay Marayag in Lupon,” Dagmang said. He added that the initiative is an upgrading of their measures against ASF.

DILG order affects 5,000 trikes in Zambo help the tricycle owners and drivers by finding alternate routes without violating the DILG order.

Several tricycle drivers have complained that policemen and Traffic Management Group (TMG) personnel apprehended them along Veterans Avenue, a national road.

ZAMBOANGA CITY--Over 5,000 tricycles in this city will be affected by the order of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) banning the three-wheeled vehicles on national roads.

Officials said majority of those affected are tricycle operators, including those

who recently purchased Piaggio Ape units on installment basis, which cost more than PHP200,000.

A number of private individuals who bought Piaggio vehicles for their own use were dismayed too since they are also affected by the DILG order.

What can travelers do to protect themselves and others?

IT is recommended avoiding nonessential travel to Level 3 warning countries. If you must travel: Avoid contact with sick people.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.

Discuss travel to Level 3 warnings with your healthcare provider. Older adults and travelers with chronic medical conditions may be at risk for more severe disease.

Clean your hands often by washing them with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains 60%–95% alcohol. Soap and water should be used if hands are visibly dirty.

It is especially important to clean hands after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after coughing, sneezing or blowing your nose.

If you spent time in Level 3 countries during the past 14 days and feel sick with

fever or cough, or have difficulty breathing: Seek medical advice.

Call ahead before you go to a doctor’s office or emergency room. Tell them about your recent travel and your symptoms.

Avoid contact with others.

Do not travel while sick.

Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when coughing or sneezing.

CAN Muslims & Christians live happily together? Yes of course, why not?

There was a heartsick history between Muslims and Christians in which some followers still carry with them the agony but there are good Muslims and Christians who has learned to forgive and forget the past and start loving all kinds of people. Please open your Bible & Qur’an, let us start reading some commands in it. In the Bible Romans 37:7,” Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour”. Christians should follow what the word of God says strictly and start loving Muslims and other religious groups. But the problem is Christians are also fighting

each other, crazy divisions inside Christian communities around the world. You can find them all in the social media. Read the writing of St. Peter in 1 Peter 3:10,” For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile”, this is very clear, God is not happy when we talked evil to anybody.

Muslims on the other hand have divisions within themselves, there are good and bad Muslims also. Majority of Muslims are good and peace-loving people but there are some good Christians who judged that all Muslims are extremists, they kill people, they worship a moon god, this is terrible. I think we need to do our homework in deeply obeying our holy Books. The

Holy Qur’an says, “There is no compulsion where the religion is concerned.”

(Holy Quran: 2/ 256).

Allah does not force people to believe Him. Allah doesn’t command His followers to kill, “Allah does not forbid you from being good to those who have not fought you in the religion or driven you from your homes, or from being just towards them. Allah loves those who are just.” (Surat al-Mumtahana, 8). Religious supremacy is the root of all evils. When Muslims and Christians will start to impose their own religion, beliefs and practices, it is a SIN against God or Allah and a real rebellion against the Holy Qur’an and the Holy Bible. Christians imposed that God and Jesus are the only true names and the

bible is the only true word of the Creator while Muslims also imposed that Allah is the only true Name, Arabic is the only language of the Creator and Qur’an is the only guide of true life. This will not end if we do not have an open mind for change. I personally believe which I knew some Christians will disagree that the God that I worship is the same Allah that Muslims’ worship.

I respect Allah, Prophet Muhammad & Qur’an and it does not affect nor change my love and worship to Jesus Christ and my respect to our Holy Book the Bible.

Developing a sense of communion

WITH the celebration of the Solemnity of All Saints and the Commemoration of All Souls, we should be reminded of that beautiful, if very overwhelming, reality that all of us, from Adam to the last man still to be born, are meant to live in communion with God and with one another.

It is a communion of heart and mind, of spirit, marked by love and truth that can only originate and be maintained in God through Christ in the Holy Spirit. The dimensions of this communion go beyond space and time, beyond the material. They go into the spiritual and supernatural.

This is what is called the communion of saints, since as God’s creatures, made in his image and likeness, all of us are meant to form one people, one body with one soul in Christ who, as the Son of God and perfect

image that God has of himself, is the pattern of our humanity, and as the Son of God who became man to redeem us from our sins, is the savior of our damaged humanity.

In short, it is God through Christ in the Holy Spirit who is the source and maintainer of this communion. This communion of saints involves all humanity—those who are already in heaven, those still on earth and those still purifying themselves in purgatory. There is a certain God-given dynamic of interconnectivity and sharing among all the members of this communion.

It is important that we are aware of this truth of our faith so that we can both enjoy the rights and privileges of such communion, and fulfill the duties that fall on us to keep that communion going.

Yes, with the keen aware-

ness of this communion, we are assured of God’s love and mercy for us. And so, we really have no reason to worry so much about anything. We just have to try our best to do our part of deserving what God wants us to be.

Among the many implications of this truth of our faith is that we ought to broaden our attitude to things to include, first of the all, the spiritual and supernatural dimensions of our life and in our relations with others.

We need, for example, to know more about the saints through whose intercession we can ask favors from God. This is not to mention that they can truly edify us and help us in our own sanctification with their example.

They lived certain aspects of Christian life to a heroic degree. They deserve to be emulated, especially when

their particular spirituality or charism fits more with our personal circumstances.

Then, we have to exert effort to relate ourselves with everybody else in this life. While we have our own limitations, we should always try to be open to the possibility of knowing more and more people and in an increasingly better way.

We have to remember that we should not only rely on our own powers, but should first of all seek God’s grace whose effectiveness knows no limits.

With God’s grace, what is impossible to us becomes possible.

Environment group hails CDO solid waste program CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY-Environmental advocacy group Green Convergence has praised the city government for enforcing policies on solid waste management.

In a message during the opening of the 3rd National Environment Summit on Wednesday, Green Convergence president Angelina Galang said that despite some challenges, the local government managed to implement waste segregation and the banning of plastic wrappers in the market.

The local government began enforcing the “Integrated Eco-biological Solid Waste Management Ordinance” last year, the first phase of which involved the ban on single-use plastics.

The second phase, which started this year, involves garbage segregation.

DOST introduces waste mgmt tech to Zambo Norte town

ZAMBOANGA CITY -- The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has recently introduced the bioreactor and plastic densifier technologies to the municipal government of Sirawai, Zamboanga del Norte.

Martin Wee, D OST regional director, said Wednesday the two waste management technologies were presented during an information drive aimed at increasing local productivity and the implementation of the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act in Sirawai.

Wee said the bioreactor transforms biodegradable household waste and processes it into soil-enriching compost that can be used to augment local farming methods. It is currently capable of converting 80 percent of its total carrying capacity into organic

fertilizer daily.

The plastic densifier, meanwhile, uses temperature to soften waste Styrofoam and plastics, allowing them to be refigured into items such as tables, chairs, and bricks.

Wee said the two technologies, developed by the Industrial Technology Development Institute (ITDI), are directed at addressing both organic and inorganic refuse.

He said they also introduced to the municipal government of Sirawai the next phase of DOST’s SmallMedium Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP) program, dubbed SETUP 2.0.

Wee said the program follows improved guidelines to enable both firm-based and industry sectors to flourish through streamlined technology upgrading systems and procedures. (PNA)

City Mayor Oscar Moreno said that environmental protection and eco-friendly policies will continue in the city, citing the ongoing rehabilitation of the old dumpsite in Zayas, Upper Carmen, which is set to be converted into an eco-park.

Moreno, who graced the event, also reported that through the private and non-government sectors, the city has organized a cooperative of former garbage scavengers to become makers of “eco-bricks”.

Last month, Environment Secretary Roy Cimatu welcomed the city’s plan to allow neighboring towns to use its sanitary landfill for a fee.

DTI allocates P13.7-M social enterprises in Davao City

DAVAO CITY -- The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has allocated PHP13.7 million for four projects in this city under the Shared Service Facility (SSF) program for 2020.

DTI Davao City Director Rachel Remitio said the beneficiaries are the Ateneo Shoe Academy; Agri Solutions Marketing Cooperative for its coco peat production in Bunawan; University of Southeastern Philippines

(USEP) for its Enhancement Fabrication Laboratory; and for an indigenous people’s (IP) group for its garment production.

Remitio said SSF is a continuing program that aims to provide equipment facilities to organized groups, associations or cooperatives that have shown good manufacturing practices for one to three years of operation.

Last year, she said six local organizations were also given assistance under the program.

SSF was launched in 2014 throughout the country as a major component of micro small and medium enterprises development, which aims to improve the competitiveness of MSMEs by providing them with machiner y, equipment, tools, systems, skills, and knowledge under a shared system.

Davao City to put up invention, promotion center

DAVAO CITY — The city government plans to establish an invention, innovation and promotion center, Davao Inventors Association president Virgilio Sangutan on Monday said.

Sangutan said a proposed ordinance creating the Invention, Innovation, and Promotion Center of Davao City has already hurdled three committee hearings and is expected to be passed by the City Council late next month.

The proposed measure, he said, also creates a policymaking body to oversee the center, which will have an initial budget of PHP10 million.

According to Sangutan, the creation of the center is in line with the Philippine Innovation Act and the Philippine Startup Law signed by President Rodrigo Duterte last year.

Republic Act 11293 or the Philippine Innovation Act recognizes the importance of innovation as a vital component of the country’s development policies to drive inclusive development, promote the growth and national competitiveness of micro, small, and medium enterprises, appropriating funds thereof and for other purposes.

NPA arms cache discovered in Davao Oro town

DAVAO CITY – Government troops discovered 11 high-power firearms belonging to the New People’s Army (NPA) in New Bataan town, Davao de Oro on Tuesday afternoon, an official said Wednesday.

Capt. Jerry Lamosao, head of the Public Affairs Office of the Army’s 10th Infantry Division (ID), said in a press briefing here Wednesday that the recovered firearms consist of four M16 rifles, an M14 rifle, two AK47 rifles, a Garand rifle, a Carbine rifle, and two M203 grenade launchers.

Lamosao said the firearms were found in Sitio Danawan, Barangay Manurigao by 66th Infantry Battalion troops following

a tip-off from two former NPA leaders and several concerned citizens in the area.

The two surrenderers also revealed the weakening of the NPA units in the province following the mass surrender of communist rebels in recent months, the Army official said.

“We see to it that we will be the first to recover the firearms. If not, it will be used by the NPA to terrorize the community,” Lamosao said, noting that the NPA usually hide their firearms in strategic locations for easy retrieval during an armed encounter with government troops.

DENR studying impact of ratifying total ban on imported wastes CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- The Philippines is on its way to ratifying a provision in an international treaty that would prohibit the shipment of garbage from developed countries to poorer nations, an official of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) said Wednesday.

Juan Miguel Cuna, DENR Undersecretary for policy, planning and international affairs, said the agency is still studying the impact of ratifying the Basel Ban Amendment and how would this affect the sector engaged in recycling of wastes.

“We are moving towards ratifying the Basel Ban Amendment. I have to double-check, but I think that’s our direction,” Cuna told reporters during a press conference on the three-day 3rd Philippine Environmental Summit held at the Grand Caprice Restaurant here Wednesday.

“I would like to clarify that not all Porcelana astringent products are covered by the advisory. But if we monitored anybody selling or distributing the banned cosmetic product, they will also be liable under the law,” Legaspi said.

Based on the latest FDA Advisory No. 2020-061, the FDA says they are classifying the original Porcelana astringent improved formula as an adulterated cosmetics product that poses potential hazards to the consuming public.

FDA warned using the product may result in adverse reactions including skin irritation, itchiness, anaphylactic shock and even, organ failure.

This is the second time in less than a year that the original Porcelana astringent improved formula failed to comply with the regulations of the FDA. Last year, the FDA also issued an advisory against the use and sale of the said product, after it was found that they were using hydroquinone and tretinoin beyond the levels allowed for a cosmetic product.

The Porcelana cosmetic products that the Food and Drug Administration has banned from the market.

Legaspi assured the public that FDA will continue to monitor pharmacies, department stores and other outlets selling the products.

“We are always for the safety of our consumers.

When we monitor, we will not limit it to the advisory.

We also investigate and check product labels. But if we prove that it is a banned product, we confiscate it outright,” she added.

She said that an advisory on a product means that it must be withdrawn from the shelves, and destroyed.

She also encouraged the public to read the advisories of the FDA and report any sale or distribution of the banned products to their office. (PNA)
