CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY - Police authorities in Cagayan de Oro City arrested on Monday three persons who were suspected of making and selling fake vaccination cards for Covid-19. Arrested during an entrapment operation along Chavez and Pabayo Streets in Barangay 3 were Faisodin Dimakuta Comacasar, 32, a resident of Marantao, Lanao del Sur; Acmad Macapaar Musa, 28, and Jamaloden Ampaso Pacasum, 36, both residents of Marawi City. Police said the three were
believed to be behind the proliferation of fake vaccination cards in the city and nearby areas. Recovered from their possession were seven pieces of Php500 bills, three lap-

MAGUINDANAO - The recent ambush in one of the remote villages in this province has been linked to an unsettled ‘rido’ between feuding cousins who are both commanders of the Bangsamoro Islamic Armed Forces, the police reported. The Maguindanao police, in its initial investigation, disclosed to the media that the killings were between two commanders of the Bangsamoro Islamic Armed Forces-Moro Islamic Liberation Front (BIAF-MILF). One of those who died was a certain Peges Lentagi Mamasainged, also known in the muslim rebels as Black Magic. Based on reports, he was a BIAF commander. CAMIGUIN -- In light of the new Alert Level 2 status in Camiguin, health authorities here urge locals to get their COVID-19 vaccine and to continue observing public health standards. “Dili ta magsalig nga nius-os atong kaso [sa COVID-19]. Magpabakuna gyud gihapon ta, dili ta maghulat nga muabot ang lain variant nga delikado,” Mambajao Municipal Health Officer Dr. Lyndon Aclan said during ‘Alerto!’ radio program, February 15. (Let us not be too lax that our [COVID-19] cases have lowered. We should still get vaccinated, instead of just waiting for another fatal variant to spread.) Aclan said there is still a considerable number of people in Camiguin who
have not yet been vaccinated against COVID-19, including senior citizens, because they have been misinformed about vaccination and its effects. Man, cohort get meted jail term for sex trafficking in Iligan By NEF LUCZON
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY A regional trial court (RTC) in Iligan City has sentenced a male offender and his female accomplice from four to 15 years in prison after pleading guilty for online sex trafficking of children. In a statement Tuesday, the International Justice Mission (IJM) in the Philippines, said the verdict was meted on February 9 by RTC Branch 2. The male trafficker was
sentenced to 15 years imprisonment after pleading guilty to attempted trafficking under Republic Act 9208, as amended by Republic Act 10364, or the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act. New rice pest control lab to serve 5 Surigao Sur towns By ALEXANDER LOPEZ
BUTUAN CIT Y – Rice farmers in five towns of Surigao del Sur can now benefit from a laboratory that will help eliminate pest infestation and rice farm diseases in the area, the Department of Agriculture in Caraga (DA-13) said Tuesday. In a statement, the DA13 said it formally opened a Biological Control (Biocon) Agent Laboratory in
the town of Cantilan on Monday. The opening of the laboratory was led by DA-13 Regional Executive Director Ricardo Oñate Jr., Cantilan Mayor Carla Lopez-Pichay, and Surigao del Sur 1st District Representative Prospero Pichay. “The laboratory will directly benefit the farmers in the towns of Carrascal,
Cantilan, Madrid, Carmen, and Lanuza,” the DA-13 said. The agency added that the laboratory will supply Biocon agents, such as the Metharizium anisopliae, a fungus that grows upon insect host cuticle that controls the population of rice black bug (RBB), locust, mosquitoes, and soil termites.

IKNB celebrates 15th anniversary

ILIGAN CITY -- Children aged five to 11 years old started getting their vaccine against coronavirus disease as the local government unit (LGU) launched the pediatric vaccination on Wednesday, February 16, at the Adventist Medical Center Iligan (AMCI), in Barangay Tibanga, here. Ed Krishna Alivio, Health Education and Promotion Officer of the Iligan City Health Office (CHO) said the LGU targets to inoculate 57,480 children. They will be vaccinated for their first dose in three months as per advise by the Department of Health (DOH). “We target to inoculate 1,300 kids daily to reach the 60% of the total number of children we target to be vaccinated in one month from the start of the rollout. That is the advise we got from the DOH,” Alivio said in an interview. There were 194 vials of Pfizer vaccine arrive in Iligan for the first dose of qualified children. Each vial has 10 doses but the CHO expects some waste of atleast one dose per vial according to Alivio. Challenge Department of Health Regional Director Jose Llacuna, Jr. reiterated that COVID-19 vaccine is safe for everyone, especially to the children, because there are parents who are still hesitant to get vaccinated against coronavirus but their children are willing to be inoculated. He said, the government continues convincing parents, through the peditricians, because “they are expert in pediatric care.” “We respect the parents’ opinion but we would like them to give (us) permission (to inoculate) their children,” Llacuna said. WE HAVE to be clear about this point. Our Christian life here on earth will always involve some war, some struggle and effort, some combat. But all of this would be done in peace and for peace. The combination may sound incredible, but that is what Christ is showing and telling us. “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace,” he told his disciples. “In this world you will have trouble, but take heart! I have overcome the world.” (Jn 16, 33) If by faith and effort, we do our best to stick with Christ, we know that victory is always assured for us. If we notice that we do not have peace while doing our warfare, we have reason to believe that we are not with Christ yet. We have to work on it. Perhaps a helpful prayer we can say can come from the Book of the Prophet Zephaniah: “Be glad and exult with all your heart…The Lord has removed the judgment against you, he has turned away your enemies, he has turned away your enemies; the King of Israel, the Lord, is in your midst, you have no further misfortune to fear.” (3, 15ff )
We already have been warned about our earthly predicament in the Book of Job. “The life of man upon earth is a warfare,” we are told. (7, 1) True enough, we are told that our enemies are own flesh, the world itself and, of course, the evil spirit. We actually have a formidable set of enemies. We have the “lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh, and the pride of life.” And as St. Paul warned us, “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” (Eph 6, 12) Aside from dealing with the enemies of our soul, we also have to struggle and exert great effort to be able to correspond properly to the supernatural destination meant for us. This will always involve some tension. But then again, as long we stick with Christ, we know that he is the one who will finish, complete and perfect everything for us and with us. (cfr. Phil 1, 6) We need to understand that Christian life is not just a matter of fighting against the enemies of our soul.

It is first of all a matter of pursuing a supernatural goal, for which we have to be conscious all the time, coming up with the appropriate plans and strategies so that we can properly act on this truth about ourselves. That is why aside from prayer and making all kinds of sacrifices, we need to study the life, words and deeds of Christ who is “the way, the truth and the life” for us, as well as avail ourselves of the supernatural means, especially the sacraments, so we can attain that supernatural ideal even while we are still in this world. We have to be wary of our tendency to be ruled only by our natural laws. We need to avail and correspond to the supernatural grace that God actually gives us in abundance. To be sure, doing so would help us deal properly with the enemies of our soul also. It will be Christ who will be fighting for us and with us!

Liberating Force Against Hunger & Poverty THE ecological people in the hinterlands of Bukidnon and Cagayan de Oro consisting mainly of Higaonons, Manobos and Talaandigs have discovered an amazing root crop called Taro Root otherwise known in the vernacular as Lutya which could be one to liberate them from the quagmire of poverty and hunger. This is amazing during these most challenging times when our country has lost its ecological integrity and food security. It is a great paradox in a rich agricultural country which has some 200,000 hectares of plantations in Mindanao alone planted with high value crops to supply the consumerist needs of the people in advanced countries but cannot even produce enough rice and milk for its hungry people, the reason why 85% of the Filipino children are malnourished. Yes, from the bosom of Mother Earth looms the long awaited countervailing force against the number enemy of the country which is hunger and poverty. Amazingly, it is also the one to cure the many ailments besetting the people as the health benefits of taro root include its ability “to improve digestion, lower blood sugar levels, prevent certain types of cancers,
protect the skin, enhance vision, increase circulation, decrease blood pressure, aid the immune system and prevent heart disease, while also supporting muscle and nerve health.” Taro roots contain “a wealth of organic compounds, minerals and vitamins that can benefit our overall health in a number of ways. It has a very significant amount of dietary fiber and carbohydrates, as well as high levels of vitamin A, E, vitamin B6 and folate. There is magnesium, iron, zinc, phosphorous, potassium, manganese, and copper in it.” No less than the former Spokesman of the Indigenous People to the United Nations, Datu Vic “Migkitay” Saway, who is the Chieftain of the Seven Tribes of Bukidnon based in Lantapan, Bukidnon, has been passionately advocating in its massive and intensified propagation coining the slogan, “one million Lutya for Lumad liberation.” Well, in a country that has become a dumping ground of finished products from all over the world that include snack foods and soft drinks that are glaringly unhealthy, why not give focus to a local root crop that is being grown

Let us be reminded of a truism that buying is like casting a vote, choosing from different economic alternatives, i.e, choosing between products which are either local or foreign, healthy or not healthy, essentials versus non-essentials, organic versus inorganic. Contemporaneous times glaringly shows that the Filipino buyers, having been brainwashed by advertisements without let-up promoted by the mainstream media, are buying what are foreign, unhealthy, the non-essentials and what are produced inorganically. SEC collects P119-M in fees, penalties through online tool
MANILA – The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has collected PHP119.07 million in fees and penalties, or an average of PHP11.9 million per month from March 2021 to January of this year, through its web-based system that allows cashless payment of business registrations, fees, and other charges. SEC chairman Emilio Aquino said the fees and other charges collected through the Commission’s Electronic System for Payments to SEC (eSPAYSEC) involved 16,898 transactions from the time the project was first implemented on March 1, 2021 up to Jan. 26, 2022. Aquino said the eSPAYSEC allows the online payment of fees, penalties, and other charges using debit and credit cards, digital wallets, and other cashless payment options. Another SEC initiative under Aquino –the Electronic Filing and Submission Tool (eFAST)--that covers the online submission of the audited financial statement (AFS), general information sheet (GIS), and other reportorial requirements of businesses processed 169,323 enrollments from the time of its launching on March 15, 2021 up to Jan. 26, 2022, with a total of
185,127 reports submitted electronically. The SEC’s Electronic System for Processing and Registration of Companies (eSPARC), which makes it faster and convenient for corporations to register, processed 48,266 applications from April 11 last year to Jan. 26, 2022, Aquino said in his presentation to Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez III of the SEC’s accomplishments for 2021. Impressed with the SEC’s accomplishments, Dominguez congratulated Aquino and the rest of the SEC for making significant progress in the Commission’s programs to improve the ease of doing business through its digitalization, as well as for deepening the capital markets. “I don’t know in the past, but I don’t think this has ever happened in SEC’s history that you have achieved so much in the ease of doing business, so, congratulations,” Dominguez told Aquino. “SEC has also contributed in a big way to improving the capital markets, and of course in catching fraudulent transactions.” Aquino said another digitalization initiative is the OneSEC tool, which ensures the one-day submission and See COLLECTS, page 9

DAVAO CITY – Business establishments in this city can now serve alcoholic beverages again as the city government lifted the modified liquor ban on Tuesday. The policy came after Mayor Sara Z. Duterte signed Executive Order No. 5, series of 2022, also known as “An Order Providing For The Lifting Of The Modified Liquor Ban
in Davao City,” on Monday. In a radio interview, Duterte said the EO pointed out that liquor will now be open for consumption inside establishments serving such products. Her latest EO effectively lifts the previous order providing for the liquor ban modified guidelines under in EO 59, series of 2021 and amended through EO No. 1, series of 2022.
“The prohibition on the serving of liquor in restaurants, bars, karaoke bars, hotels, and all other establishments open to the public is hereby lifted,” the latest EO stated. TO ensure the country’s food sufficiency, the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) in the province of South Cotabato recently distributed vegetable seeds and other farm implements to the members of Puti Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries Association in Barangay Puti, Norala, South Cotabato. DAR Soccsksargen Regional Director Marion Abella said the department distributes farm inputs as part of the starter kit for vegetable production under the Buhay sa Gulay project. “Buhay sa Gulay project is the department’s initiative to help the country sustain its food sources by promoting urban gardening to rural areas to help bolster the productivity of vegetable supply in the countryside,” he said. Abella said the DAR distributed seeds such as eggplant, pole string beans, green pepper, among others, as well as fertilizer and farm implements like wheelbarrows, shovels, power

World NTD Day 2022: Signing of the Kigali Declaration kicks off commitment to ending neglected tropical diseases by 2030 TO commemorate World NTD Day last January 30, global leaders convened to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the London Declaration and kick off endorsements to the Kigali Declaration on Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) - a high-level political declaration which aims to mobilise political will and secure commitments to achieve the targets set out in the World Health Organization (WHO) NTD road map 2021-2030 and the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target on NTDs. NTDs are a group of 20 diseases like blinding trachoma, intestinal worms and elephantiasis which are preventable and treatable, but still affect 1.7 billion people around the world. By preventing children from going to school and adults from being able to work, NTDs trap individuals and whole communities in cycles of extreme poverty. “NTDs tend to thrive in developing regions of the world, where water quality, sanitation, and access to health care are limited. We consider the Philippines as one of these target areas. These [diseases] include leprosy, rabies, and foodborne trematodiasis” said Jona Turalde, the Philippines’ representative to the Youth Advisory Board of Uniting to Combat NTDs. “With Covid-19, a lot of public health issues are being neglected and part of this are neglected tropical diseases. We must strategize and include NTDs in our health plans, especially as part of universal health coverage,”
she added. The Kigali Declaration on NTDs will be the successor to the ground-breaking London Declaration on NTDs that was launched in 2012 and expired in 2020. The London Declaration galvanized donor countries, philanthropists, private sector companies, non-governmental organizations, academia and research organisations to come together and commit to prioritising NTDs. Key successes since the London Declaration include over one billion people reached with treatment for NTDs each year, five years in a row; 35 countries have eliminated at least one NTD bringing the overall total to 43 countries; and 600 million fewer people now require NTD treatments. Preliminary data shows that only 14 cases of Guinea worm disease were reported globally in 2021, representing the lowest case total, since the beginning of the eradication programme in the mid-1980s. This progress proves that ending NTDs is possible, however, there is still more to be done. The Kigali Declaration aims to protect the gains that have been made, whilst accelerating action by putting country ownership, integration, and cross-sectoral collaboration front and centre. The 100% Committed campaign will be led by countries affected, backed by bold financial and political commitments, and championed by civil society, influencers, and people affected by NTDs calling for action. Education is a human right that can contribute to a more just and peaceful world. Human dignity, the ability to better one’s lot in life, and civic duty hinge on a person’s education. The 2030 Agenda is all about achieving this goal. We’ve set up a Learning Action Cell in our school for teachers to focus on issues related to educational technology in the year 2030. Through hands-on learning regarding curriculum, instruction, and assessment, it hopes to support and develop teachers in doing a great job. We focused on how teaching and learning 2030 is what I’m doing as a LAC facilitator. During our LAC session, we’ll be discussing how to best prepare students for the future of education. We need to rethink the way we educate our students. I’m doing this because I’d like to take a risk like that, regardless of whether or not our current ways of teaching are a waste of time and money. Teachers must assist their students in discovering how to learn. Already, our world is shifting. This generation’s education must look forward rather than backward to prepare them for the difficulties of the coming decades. Because teaching young people how to deal with uncertainty is more crucial than ever, this positive development. The only way to make instructors more tolerant is to reexamine our entire approach to life and how we perceive the world. As a result, educational institutions and curricula must be updated to keep pace with teachers’ advancements. Instead of memorizing facts, “learn how to learn.” They should also be taught problem-solving skills. We need to rethink the way we educate our students. Teaching pupils how to learn and solve issues should take precedence over teaching them facts and figures. If a child is capable of learning independently, it is equally significant. We need to make adjustments at all levels. Technology advances so rapidly that we now have to include entrepreneurship as part of our curriculum, and we must do so. Many people will have more new jobs as a result of this. Self-employed contractors are becoming increasingly commonplace rather than long-term employees. However, this is something that could happen in the future. To avoid repeating the same mistakes, we must improve how we teach our students. How possible for schools to remain relevant in an ever-changing world? In my opinion, education and the current world must be brought closer together. There is a long way to go before students can go to school and work simultaneously. People use education simultaneously as a one-time investment. If we don’t have much time to practice, we won’t succeed. When we learn a new talent, we don’t merely put it to use in our daily lives. People in the modern world must balance their time between school and work. We need to hire people who have a lot of experience teaching people new things. The first thing we should do is work on actual projects for real companies. There is no substitute for going out into the world and meeting people in
their communities. The best way to grasp real-world issues is to be conscious of what others are going through in the world. When a student first starts school, work must be integrated. Being in an area undergoing such rapid development, I will urge my colleagues to get a master’s in their chosen subject. To remain relevant, we need to keep up with the pace of technological advancements. I’ll explain to them that there will always be a demand for teachers who can concentrate in specific areas to the point where they are considered experts in those fields. However, we must also keep in mind elements specific to our sector. We need to know a lot about a topic of interest before we can begin. Isn’t it amazing how the world has transformed over the last few decades? Changing our ways is necessary. No matter what we decide to do in the future, we’ve already invested time will not be lost. As long as our subject profession remains relevant, we should be content. I’d like my colleagues to reflect on a wide range of topics and keep in mind the following: “When things don’t go according to plan, what’s our “B” option? We need to know what plan C is. Do we have a backup plan? “We’ll have to keep this in mind moving forward. Our education shouldn’t be aimed at conforming us to a preconceived notion of who we should be. Instead, it should allow us to be more adaptable. Let kids take greater responsibility for their education and grade them on projects and portfolios rather than tests. In my opinion, students should be given a list of challenges and concerns that the world is currently facing rather than a list of academic subjects. As soon as they pick one, we should allow them to work on it as part of their educational process. To achieve this goal, we must teach students how to learn rather than just learn. Instead of focusing on facts and figures, our goal is to help students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. If we want our kids to have a say in what they learn, we need to expose them to a broad spectrum of current events and issues. Let’s focus our efforts on gaining a better understanding of an issue. It’s not enough that we want to study; we also need to put our knowledge to use. Additionally, it’s essential to learn for the right reasons and not just for the sake of it. No one can avoid coping with problems, no matter how much the world changes. Teachers should demonstrate to their students how to handle difficult situations. This explains why we’ll be just as vital as before until the machine takes over. Those are the most important topics for me to focus on for my co-teachers in our LAC session. To address the problems and challenges of Education 2030, I need to tackle teachers’ growth and development in our LAC session. These and more are why I’m putting so much emphasis on teachers, aside from the fact that I’m also a teacher. A teacher’s impact on a student’s thoughts and feelings is enormous. A country’s culture is ultimately shaped by its teachers.

in doing so, some 6,000 Filipinos are going abroad everyday during the prepandemic period just to find jobs as there are some 14 million Filipinos who are either unemployed or under-employed. Many Filipinos are beset with problems on high sugar levels, high blood pressure, skin diseases, cancers, or what have you because of the unhealthy and chemicals-laden foods coming from everywhere. Even the way we raise chickens that is heavily using toxic chemicals is highly flawed as these are carcinogenic. But constant bombardment of advertisements coming from the mainstream media which are owned by the trans-national corporations are giving the message: buy this buy that and you will be happy. That is the way they promote unbridled materialism and consumerism. That is a societal flaw that we must now rectify. We in the cooperative movement are serving notice to one and all: if you buy the products of the Cooperatives, you are buying what are locally produced, what are healthy, what are organically grown and what are the essentials. In doing so, you promote the local economy, generate jobs for the Filipinos and you buy what are healthy and essentials. Indeed, buying is like casting a vote and our vote should be that of buying local, buy healthy, buy organic and buy what are essentials. If you buy the Filipino products, you support the livelihood of the poor and the vulnerable. If you buy foreign products in the malls of the oligarchs, you further enrich the rich and powerful oligarchs. Lutya is indeed the liberating force against poverty and joblessness and in eating Lutya, you cure not only ailments of the body but that of society as well.

The police also told the media that other members of the family who died were a certain Tani and Kamar Mamasainged. Five others who were also part of the families in the convoy of SUVs are not identified yet. Those still in critical conditions at the hospital were identified as Baunal Lumabad, Anwar Dimasinsin and Sanjen Mamasainged. Police probers said the families of the victims were in a convoy going to Barangay Kitapok, Datu Saudi Ampatuan town when the ambush took place in the morning of February 12th. They were supposed to join a kanduli (which means thanksgiving banquet) and celebrate a rido settlement. When the victims onboard on two SUVs were already in a two-lane road in sitio Dam, Barangay Kalumamis, Guindulungan in Maguindanao, armed men allegedly led by Jordan Malalintang and his son Morsid, alighted from the crime scene and peppered them with bullets. Investigators said the suspects used high-powered firearms (M14 and M16 rifles) when they staged the ambush which killed nine people instantly and others in critical conditions.
