LL 121 rural electric cooperatives in the Philippines have bonded together and fielded four party-lists in the May 13 midterm election to counter the alleged looming threat from the Department of Energy (DOE) to disband them and privatize electrification in the provinces.

In a press conference on Monday, Northern Mindanao Rural Electric Cooperatives Association president Adrian Ebcas said that rural electric cooperatives nationwide need to defend themselves from DOE actions that are starting to hound them. Ebcas is the first nominee of Ako Padayon Pilipino, one of four partylists of the rural electric cooperatives sector. DAVAO City--Japan wants more workers from the Philippines to address the looming shortage in its labor market, Japanese Assistant Press Secretary Natsuko Sakata announced. In an interview on Sunday at the Waterfront Insular Hotel Davao, Sakata announced that the Philippines has been identified as one of the nine priority

countries where the Japanese government plans to source out workers with the opening of its labor market on April 1, 2019 to augment its workforce in at least 14 specialized fields. She said they estimate around 345,000 migrant workers will be needed in Japan over the next five years from China, Nepal, Mongolia, and six countries in the Association of Southeast See JAPAN, page 11

DAVAO City--The Philippine government is set to sign a loan agreement with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for $202.04 million or P10.54 billion to improve the road network in Mindanao after the exchange of notes between Foreign Affairs secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. and Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono on Sunday.
