3 suspects in Doc’s slay in Cagayan de Oro fall By CRIS DIAZ Executive Editor
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY: Three suspects, one of them confessed as the alleged trigger man, in the shooting to death of the director of a hospital here fall Friday morning in Balingoan, a coastal town of Misamis Oriental, 89 kilometers east of here. Lt. Valiente Macarayo, the town police chief of Balingoan, identified the suspects as Jomar Adlaw 30, Maramag, Marjun Cabog, 39, of Don Carlos, Joel Nacua, 37, farmer, of Lingayon, Valencia City, all of the province of Bukidnon. Macarayo said that the fourth suspect identified as Rene Dortosa of Balingoan, allegedly a former military man, is now the subject of police manhunt. According to Macarayo, Dortosa was the alleged middleman who hired the three suspects in consideration of P 150,000. Tangub City opens Christmas Symbol Festival 2021 TANGUB CITY, Misamis Occidental (PIA)--The City Government of Tangub kicked off its 29th Christmas Symbols Festival 2021 with the theme: We need a little Christmas “Christmas Around the World.” The activity aims to showcase Tangub’s creativity, ingenuity, mastering of the art of lights, and Tangubanons unbeatable spirit of volunteerism. The opening of the Christmas village was highlighted with singing and dancing of the Sinanduloy Cultural troupe. “Today marks the 29th year of our Christmas Symbols. Every year, we showcase the ingenuity and bayanihan spirit of the Tangubanons. During the height of the pandemic, we had to downsize our Christmas Symbols but we did not put off the symbol of hope for all Tangubanons,” Mayor Jennifer Wee Tan said. The mayor also added that every light symbolizes the hope and dream of every Tangubanons, touched by the hands of the employees whose Bayanihan spirit is felt by everyone. Instead of replicating landmarks from various parts of the world, the different entries take inspiration from decorative and artistic trademarks and motifs of different cultures around the world. We must understand how innately our mind is linked to our body and how any effect on our mental health will directly or indirectly impact our physical health and vice versa. When we’re stressed, our bodies perceive an imminent threat. When the stress becomes constant so does the feeling of threat. In response, our glands release adrenaline and cortisol so we can fight or find a way to escape (hence the so-called fight-or-flight response). The PSA is targeting to process the PhilSys registration of up to 50 million by the end of 2021, and 70 million in 2022. The PSA earlier apologized for the delay in the delivery of their PhilID cards due to quarantine restrictions and other rea-

HOW amazing it was to listen to the 200 world leaders attending the recently concluded Conference of the Parties (COP26) on the G20 Summit on Climate Change, pronouncing that it is our duty to save the Earth with no less than Prince Charles giving the opening statement that “we don’t just need finer words but more on finer actions!” Everyone is singing that tune now of saving the Earth but still it is business-as-usual. While environmentalists worldwide are serving notice to one and all that in the absence of a major change, the global system will collapse in less than 100 years as the “tipping point” has already been reached because of two major reasons namely: Climate Change and Economic Unsustainability. Climate change is glaringly manifested by global warming, the melting of the 386-meter-high iceberg in the Arctic and the Antarctic resulting to the rising of the ocean level, the acidification of the oceans, the extinction of the species, among others. The unsustainability of the economy is shown in what His Holiness Pope Francis described as “glaring and scandalous social inequities,” stating further “it bids us all to break the bond of oppression and social injustice.”

sustainability that is wrecking ecological havoc, gross inequities, social injustices and dire poverty. It is paradoxical and even causing nausea to hear these world leaders talked, calling to save the Earth during these most critical times of planetary emergency where the doomsday clock has been described as just “one minute before midnight,” yet, they continue to advance neoliberal economic paradigm that is causing climate change and so much inequities. While the Philippines is seen “as a frontline state in the battle against climate change, having been battered by relentless storms in recent years, it refrained from giving commitment to stop the usage of coal. That stand should be unacceptable especially to the Mindanawons because in Mindanao alone we have some 6 coal-fired power plants established in different provinces of Mindanao totaling some 2,200 megawatts. The assets of some 5,000 billionaires on earth are far greater to the total assets of the 7.2 billion people world’s population. These billionaires are fronting the neo-liberal capitalism paradigm called corporate globalization “where economic dictatorship is grafted onto representative democracy giving way to the toxic growth of religious fundamentalism and rightwing extremism, leading not only to the death of democracy but to the democracy of death,” to quote world renowned environmentalist, Dr. Vandanna Shiva. This is the root cause why elections in the Philippines are business-managed electoral system full of rhetorical style, body languages and the like where the highly financed candidates by the oligarchs almost always win to promote and protect oligarchical interest as shown by the “Rice Tariffication Law.” In our country, only 50 families are pocketing 70% of the Gross Domestic Products with only a few elite controlling businesses through cartels, conglomerate and monopolies. The growth-at-all-cost development paradigm that sacrifices Mother Earth and the people to the altar of greed, profit, fame and power is the main culprit in this above-mentioned un-

Synodality is at the service of the mission of the Church, in which all members are called to participate. This asks us how we as missionary disciples are engaged in the evangelization of all aspects of our society and various fields of life whether in politics, economics, socio-cultural and in the promotion of social and ecological justice, advocating for the rights of the poor and of all creation. How do we as the Church also help support those members who offered to serve the society in a missionary way especially as public servants? How is discernment about missionary choices made and by whom? The Synodal process also calls us to dialogue with the society which requires perseverance, patience and enables us for mutual understanding. How does the
Church dialogue with and learn from other sectors of society? the spheres of politics, economics, culture, civil society, and people who live in poverty? These are relevant questions for reflection as we prepare for the election in May 2022. First is by forming circles of discernment whereby we need to listen to the Holy Spirit in electing or building our future as a people and as a nation. What is equally relevant is the formation of ourselves as faithful disciples and at the same time responsible citizens. Here we acknowledge the insights of Aloysius Lopez Cartagenas in his book “The Catholic Church and the Philippine Politics in the Light of the Second Plenary Council: Becoming a Leaven of Society, 2014.” Call for Circles of Discernment In 2010, the CBCP came out with a pastoral statement on Lay participation in Politics and Peace. Here the Bishops call for the laity to form into circles of discernment, analyze the situation using the see, judge and act method of Catholic Social Teaching. They also encouraged the laity to get involved in direct partisan
politics, which means to exercise their right and duty to campaign for candidates who are competent, honest and public service minded. This movement continues today spearheaded by CARITASPHILIPPINES. DILAAB Foundation headed by Fr. Melo Diola in response to the CBCP’s call came out with initiatives such as Circles of Discernment (CiDE) as a way of forming effective citizen engagement during and beyond elections through access to information and involvement in a prayerful and well-defined decisionmaking process to help bring out credible public servants and engage citizens. They came out with the LASER test (Leadership, Action, Supporters, Election Conduct, and Reputation) that will serve as a guide to the electorate in their discernment process. They too came out with the I Vote Good Education campaign for election. DA-NorMin stages 3rd corn derby in its research center for upland development DANGCAGAN, BUKIDNON, November 15 The Department of Agriculture Northern Mindanao in partnership with the private seed companies commenced the planting of various hybrid corn seeds at the agency’s Research Center for Upland Development (RCUD) in barangay Barongcot. The activity aims to showcase the potentials of
different hybrid corn varieties, following the technologies brought by the seed companies namely, Bioseed Research Philippines, Inc., Asian Hybrid Seed Technologies, Inc., Corteva Agriscience Inc., Evo Gene, Green and Grow Technologies, Bayer Crop Science, Inc., and Syngenta Philippines, Inc. Earlier in October, the department has conducted a corn
derby at DA-10’s research complex and center in Dalwangan, Malaybalay City, Bukidnon and Lanise, Claveria, Misamis Oriental, respectively. bias, fairness, and justice, where it overall shapes one’s treatment of others. Particularly, it focused on gender and development (GAD), tackling gender concerns affecting public offices and clients, including the participants and their respective families. It emphasized further on the equality of women and men officials and officers in nation-building.
DA-10 Regional Technical Director for Operations Carlota S. Madriaga remarked that the training is a continual effort to show how gender shapes the roles of women and men in society, including their role in development. MANILA – The first batch of Philippine peso banknotes will arrive in the country by April next year, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Governor Benjamin Diokno said in a briefing Thursday. Diokno said the BSP and the Reserve Bank of Australia and its subsidiary Note Printing Australia have reached an agreement for the production of the polymer PHP1,000 banknotes. Australia is the first country to issue a full series of banknotes using polymer as material, and it has produced and supplied polymerized banknotes to

year, a typical coal plant (about 100MW) generates 3,700,000 tons of carbon dioxide, the primary human cause of climate change – as much as carbon dioxide as cutting down 161 million of trees. In addition to the many air toxics that are causing cancer, abortion, chronic bronchitis, aggravated asthma and premature death, a typical coal plant emits 10,000 tons of sulfur dioxide which causes acid rain that damages forest, lakes and buildings and forms small airborne particles that can penetrate deep into the lungs. Thus, it is so disappointing to note that while the clamor worldwide is to PHASE-OUT the usage of coal, yet, COP26 decided just to PHASE-DOWN, based on the dictate of China and India! Worse, the Philippines’ stand was to refrain from giving any commitment, meaning, continue the usage of coal in the Philippines without let-up. That was the government’s stand in consonance with the oligarch’s stand. Is that the stand of the Filipino People? Of the Mindanawons? NEVER. In several environmental summits, thousands of participants had expressed condemnation of the establishment of coal-fired power plants since 2010 but were never listened to. In these contemporaneous times amidst the glaring threats of climate change, there is now an on-going world shift to debunk death causing technologies and replace them with environmentfriendly renewable energy such as solar and wind to stop “businessas-usual” development paradigm perpetuated by the neo-liberal capitalism and to replace it with social solidarity economy. The time has come to give priority to the people and the environment and not to business and profits. Unless these paradigm shifts are pursued by the world leaders, then, all the talks on saving the Earth will just be rhetorical, aptly described by Shakespeare as “full of sound and fury signifying nothing.”

Ledesma’s S.J criteria on the 5 C’s.(Conscience, Competence, Compassion, companions, and Commitment or the 5 K’s: Konsyensya, Kakayahan, Kalooy, Kauban, ug Kaakuhan) Last 2016 the CBCP in their pastoral exhortation “Wise as Serpents, Innocent as Doves” also offered guidelines to our Catholic voters deriving from the moral teachings of the Church for their collective discernment. The ideal leaders are those who after Christ came to serve and not to be serve. The Catholic voter should not lend support to any candidate whose ideology binds him or her to make the Philippines a secular state that has no tolerance for religion in its public life. They should choose candidates who are upholding the Church’s teachings on abortion, euthanasia, restorative justice and not death penalty, the sanctity of marriage and not divorce. The Bishops also urged the faithful to be open to choose candidates who are non-Catholic. Many years back the CBCP issued a guide to discernment in choosing candidates who are pro-God, pro-Life, pro-Environment, pro-people, pro-Church and pro-Society. Many other initiatives were done in response to this need for guidance in the discernment of the faithful. In the archdiocese, a movement espoused by the Archdiocesan Good Governance Apostolate is the “Not for Sale Movement” and others. The Bishops in all exhortations on politics however made it clear that the Church as an institution will never endorse a particular candidate. The clergy is restricted to hold public office or have an active role in political parties and in the direction of labor unions, unless the need to protect the rights of the Church or to promote the common good requires it in the judgment of the competent ecclesiastical authority. (C. 285 #3, C. 287 # 2) The priests, as servant of the universal church, cannot tie himself to any historical contingency, and therefore must be above any political party. But they continue to issue guidelines and criteria for discernment in choosing our leaders. Current situation calls for this especially
when there is an observation how politicians are playing with and even mocking our electoral system due to this substitution phenomenon in filing their candidacy. Of course, the priest as a fellow citizen can readily share the fruit of his discernment to anybody whom to elect as our leaders not in the pulpit but in his encounter with people as co-citizens. This holds true for religious or all consecrated persons. There is a distinction between politics as field and politics as arena.
