NPA to free 2 captive cops in Surigao Norte

SURIGAO City--Communist rebels have agreed to release on Wednesday the two police officers they captured early last month in Placer town in Surigao

del Norte.

“As a goodwill gesture to promote the peace talks between the Government of the Philippines and the National Democratic Front of the Philippines, and as a response to the appeals of the families of the Prisoners

of War (POWs), the NDFP is releasing the two POWs recently taken into custody by the New People’s Army,” said Ka Oto, spokesperson of the NPA’S Guerilla Front 16.

OPAPP, Duyog Marawi share Christmas joy with Marawi bakwits

ILIGAN City--In celebration of the season of hope, love and peace, the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process (OPAPP), partnered with Duyog Marawi, to spread the spirit of Christmas to the communities of internally displaced persons (IDPs) from the Islamic City of Marawi, December 16-17.

With the theme “Puso at Kapayapaan: Magbigayan at Magmahalan”, OPAPP serenaded the IDPs with Christmas carols while the children in return sang their own renditions of ‘Awit sa Marawi’. The kids also engaged themselves on warm-up activities such as dancing along with the ‘Baby Shark’ and ‘Chicken Dance’ songs, coloring activities, and peace lectures.

PHILIPPINE Army commander Lt. Gen. Rolando Joselito D. Bautista honored troops and units from various services involved in the five-month battle to liberate Marawi City from Maute Group terrorists in a short ceremony in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City Friday.

Bautista led the awarding ceremony where personnel and units of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Philippine National Police (PNP) and Philippine Coast Guard were honored for their contribution in defeating the terrorists, Army spokesperson Lt. Col. Ray Tiongson said.

Tiongson said a total of 39 Combat Commander Kagitingan badges, four Silver Cross medals, and 14 Military Merit medals were awarded.

1st CDO Millennials Music and Arts Festival this January MILLENNIALS seem to have taken listening to music to a new level. More and more, millennials are merely turning to music to make their days go by better. But why is it so effective?

Interestingly, the millennial obsession with music has resulted in what appears to be stronger emotional engagement, with millennials listening to the same music longer, as compared to our hit-hopping parents and grandparents, whose selections generally spent far less time on the charts.

Millennial attendance of music festivals has nearly doubled in just three years. Studies show that at least 29% of millennials have attended a music festival or live concert in the last 12 months.

This increase hasn’t been caused by millennials’ desire to passively view live performances. So why are millennial fans flocking to concerts and music festivals?

Music events are a great way for people to take a mental break from their day-to-day reality.

So it’s no surprise that most millennials attend music festivals seeking escape. Multiday events offer this experience, but single-day events and concerts can do so, too, with a little creativity. These conditions are no longer present because: One, there is no more actual rebellion, but only looming threats thereof, and Two: the civilian government agencies in Marawi City and in other areas are already functional.

Flouting the Constitution and insisting on the extension of martial law will only exacerbate attempts of terrorists to recruit people by highlighting the evils of martial law abuses as propaganda to join them to rise up against the government.

No one – not even the President and the Congress – is above the Constitution. We are not ruled by kings or politicians; we are a government of laws and not of men. Verily, to insist on extending martial law when there are no more constitutional grounds to uphold it is to violate their sworn oaths to uphold the Constitution.

O ​ ur ancestral homes, torogans, and grand mosques were destroyed. Most of the buildings and streets as we remember it are gone; what remains of Marawi is within ourselves. We, the people of Marawi, are still in the process of healing and rebuilding our lives, our homes, and the future. For a while, we were hopeful because the fighting had already stopped and the government allowed many residents to return to their homes. Can we not rebuild our City without Martial Law? In view of the unfortunate decision of Congress to extend martial law to another year, we call on the military to police their ranks and ensure that there are no more trampling on the rights of the people, especially the embattled Maranaos. We call on our people and our local leaders to be vigilant even against the slightest of terrorist threats and to help our government battle the spread of extremist ideologies.

As always, the IBP Lanao del Sur Chapter shall also be vigilant and willing to assist anyone whose rights have been violated by martial law abuses.

To our dear President, it is our stand that the extension of martial law is against our constitution. Nevertheless, for the good of our country and the Maranao people, whose blood you say runs in your veins, we hope that history will prove your decision correct.

Engaging Students in Ecological Literacy

Ecological literacy is learning the right way to protect and preserve the environment. It is in the Constitution that we must protect the Environment. Most of us doesn’t care of the environment, some will just throw garbage anywhere. Students nowadays do not care of the environment. Some would just drop their plastic wrapper on the ground, or throw away their food

wrapper while they are riding a motorcycle, jeepney or tricycle. They don’t have love of country and discipline.

It is one of the duties of the teacher to help preserve the environment. Teachers must have intervention and help disseminate the information that we only have one world to live. And that ecological literacy must be developed in every learner.

There must be integration of the lessons with regard to the valuing of the environment.

My challenge is to educate these students on how to properly manage garbage and inculcate into the minds of students the love of nature. My way of educating them is integrating the care for mother earth in some of my classes. Once students learn the value of taking good care of the environment, they will be the one to educate their parents, siblings and friends to be responsible guardian of mother earth.

One of the highlights is the Daily Noon time Mass held at the Fatima Chapel.

The school is grateful to the St. Paul Sisters for accommodating the MOGCHS students in this daily Mass.

The school caters to the graduating students in their Sacrament of Confirmation before they graduate from the school. The confirmation had their orientation during recollection for them to understand what the sacrament of Confirmation is all about. Confession for the confirmants is given also to students prior to their Confirmation. The confessors come from the diocesan clergy and religious priests like Jesuits, Sacred Heart Fathers and the Calabrian.

Year level spiritual formations are well taken cared by different organizations.

One day recollection has been made possible by the

Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro Campus Ministry Association (ACCMA) and Xavier University United Religious Organizations (XU URO). These two organizations facilitated the first and second year level Recollections. The Third year level is given catechesis by the Alpha Course program.

When students reach 4th year, they undergo a one day recollection facilitated by the seminarians of St. John Vianney Theological seminary.

Last school year 20132014, Xavier University opened its doors for the public high schools to have their recollection at the XU campus. The students had positive feedback since the place is new to them. A confession was conducted before the Mass. Mass sponsorship for the Feast of St. Augustine at the Cathedral is also being supported by

the school. Teachers and students are encouraged to join and offer something whether in kind or cash as a form of gratitude for the blessings they have received.

The school is grateful for the teachers of the Values Education Department headed by Dr. Helen E. Maasin because of their zealous dedication to help the spiritual aspect of the students to grow. The school is considered to be the seed bed of vocation especially for priesthood.

Worth to mention, there are seven Archdiocesan priests who are graduates of MOGCHS such as Fr. Ronald Ledesma, SSJV and Fr. Jobel to name a few. For the formation of the Values Education teachers, a recollection is conducted before the school year starts as well as a treat before the school year ends. Non-Catholic teachers are encouraged to join in this activity.

Preparing a classroom is not an easy task because it needs time, money and effort. It needs dedication and perseverance in order to realize such plan.

Maybe I just thought that it may just be a plan but I do hope that when I retire from service as a teacher in the future, I will put up my own school so I can do what I want in my school as long as it follows the mandate of the government and the department of education.

In the present, we al-

ready have good classrooms, but some would say that these classrooms are not what we wanted. We wanted something new, different and that can boost morale to teachers and students. If someday I will be given a chance to become a school head, I will ask help from my stakeholders to make good or improve classrooms by face lifting. Some teachers are becoming so uneconomical that they ask students to bring floor wax a day or a week. It would have been better if the teacher is a resourceful one, he asks help from others he knew

who can vouch to help the project of tiling and ask help to the hrpta.

Provided that the building will not be demolished in order to exhaust all mean of maximizing the use of these rooms. The rooms must belong to a building that is newly built.

In the hinterlands, classroom beautification is not a big issue, the issue is that students must be inside classroom to learn from their teachers. It is enough that these classroom made of bamboo or nipa are used a place for learning.

Utilization of Worksheets to improve Students Performance

Students’ activities in class are important in order to hook their interest and understand more of the subject matter.

The worksheet provides a handy place for them to summarize the critical information. It make use of it during parts of two classes: first reviewing and introducing the different rules, then developing the material on error bounds.

Students who performed good in the worksheets are also doing good in their achievements.

Worksheets provided an excellent means of teach-

ing mathematical concepts that are somewhat algorithmic. There is a positive effect as to the achievement of students as manifested in their performance in the quarter exams.

These worksheets encourage students to talk through the material until they reach a good understanding of it.

Teaching students how to learn from their textbooks Having students write out responses encourages their engagement with the text; the questions chosen indicate areas on which to focus. Explicitly discussing the worksheets and why particular ques-

tions are asked helps students reflect on what is important. Followup discussions drawing similar information from students on subsequent sections reinforce lessons on how to glean knowledge from their textbooks.

It helped students in connecting new material to previously-covered material. Making connections can be achieved by asking students to review, and possibly rephrase, previously-covered material at the beginning of a worksheet, and then to use this material to investigate new ideas.

MICC to submit to Pres. Duterte results of studies on open-pit mining

MANILA - - The interagency Mining Industry C oordinating Council (MICC) is set to submit to President Rodrigo R. Duterte by January 2018 a memorandum regarding the results of its study on open pit mining.

Agabin said the study by MICC’s Technical Working Group (TWG) aims to fully inform the President about the findings on open pit mining.

The President has earlier decided to stand pat on his decision to ban open pit mining even after the MICC has recommended the lifting of the ban.

He said he would only

scrap the ban if he sees that mining companies are doing something to correct the destruction on environment as a result of mining operations.

Agabin said results of the TWG study is not targeted to immediately make the President change his decision on open pit mining but “to simply inform him of the findings of the

TWG.” He explained that open pit mining is being employed worldwide.

“So the conclusion we had there, as a mining method, is it can be safely done but the recommendation was of course we have to tighten enforcement,” he said.

What is a problem? A problem is a mathematically unfamiliar situation that needs a solution but for which the problem solver has no readily available algorithm to use to solve it.It is also finding a solution to a problem.

There are three types of teaching related to problem solving according to SCHROEDER (1989). The first one is “teaching for problem solving”, second is “teaching about problem solving” and the third is “teaching through problem solving”.

In teaching for problem solving technique, the problems are given to the students after needed content and skills are taught.

On the other hand, teaching about problem solving technique involves giving problems to the students after general method and different strategies of solving problems are discussed. It includes four

phases: (a) understanding the Problem, (b) devising a Plan, (c) carrying out the plan and (d) looking back.

Finally, the teaching through problem solving is the type wherein the problem is given to the students at the START. The problem is used as context to teach the topics as well as to develop skills and apply these skills to unfamiliar situations.

B eing a confident problem solver is really important to achieve success. Much of that confidence comes from having a good process to use when approaching a problem. Thus, mathematics teachers are encouraged to present a problem at the start of the class. This will serve as a motivation or springboard of the lesson. The problem given will help develop critical thinking and will arouse the students’ interest.

91 Mindanao farmers now on way home for Christmas QUEZON CITY – After staying for nearly two months in Metro Manila to join the other sectors to ventilate their grievances, the 91 farmers from Davao region in Mindanao are now on their way home for Christmas.

Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) Acting Secretary John R. Castriciones attributed the success of the send-off ceremony on Monday, December 18 to the teamwork of DAR officials, employees, other concerned agencies and the local government of Quezon City.

The formal send-off of the Mindanao farmers was realized five days after Castriciones formally assumed as DAR acting secretary.

Other top officials of DAR, to include Undersecretaries Rosalina L. Bistoyong, Karlo S. Bello, Luis Meinrado C. Pangulayan and Emily O. Padilla; Directors Leomides R. Villareal of the Public Assistance and

Media Relations Service (PAMRS) and Rene E. Colocar of the Administrative Service also joined Castriciones during the send-off activity.

Before they commenced their journey home, DAR had prepared a program where farmer leaders and members got the chance to meet and talk with the top officials of the agency where they made known their demands, among them, was on the issuance of an installation order for the agrarian reform beneficiaries (ARBs) of the Tagum Development Corporation (TADECO) in the province of Davao del Norte.

Castriciones assured the farmers that DAR will immediately look into their demands and directed the field operations and legal services units of the department to fast-track the resolutions of the above-stated appeal for the issuance of an installation order.

Educating Children in Poor Families

Access to education for all has been a relatively recent development in human history when viewed from historical perspective.

Access to education has over many years of human development have been a privilege of those who can afford and as a result it was a defining element as to the social class of a person. Only affluent families can bring their children to better schools and generally because they were educated and able to make a more informed decision as to which school their children should at-

tend to. Children born into poor families face an educational disadvantage from before birth and throughout their education such that the socio-economic status to a large extent determines educational outcomes, which in turn determine the socioeconomic status of their next generation.

The law of the land which is the Constitution, provides that the state should promote and protect the right of all citizens to quality, equitable, and complete basic education in all levels for free and the state should take all the appropriate steps to make basic education accessible for all. The quality of a nation’s education is a

key factor in the economic growth of the nation in the labor market, performance of individuals towards national development goals and in providing a pathway out of poverty. We can’t deny the fact that the Philippine educational system has a lot of perennial problems that up to now are still existing and remain unsolved. No enough classrooms, science laboratories, libraries, books, and other learning materials are the common problems in every school.

All the needs of the school is not provided by the national government to ensure a school that has an environment which is conducive to learning. Parents whose

students are in the public schools are still obliged to spend some of their money for the education of their students despite the mandates of our law that basic education is for all and for free. These money goes to other needs of the school such as, the school uniform, school identification card, and science materials for science laboratory activities, photocopies of the activities and other subject references due to unavailability of textbooks and other learning materials at school. Another dilemma for the parents is the giving of daily allowances to their children in going to school. This is the biggest challenge for

parents whose income is below the minimum wage and living lower poverty line. This scenario is the biggest obstacle of every unfortunate students and the inability of their parents to support them in their studies which will later result to their failure.

I believed in the adage that poverty is not a hindrance to success but rather poverty is only a colossal factor that inhibits success. Money is a catalyst for success. Therefore, if a person has enough money, he can easily do what he wants to hone all the qualities he needs to help him determine his social class in the society.

Tagum recognized for winning war vs malnutrition PASAY CITY—The City of Tagum adds another feather on its cap as it bagged the highly-coveted CROWN (Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner in Nutrition) Award during the 2017 National Nutrition Awarding Ceremony, proving that Tagum City is winning its war against hunger and malnutrition.

Awarded by the National Nutrition Council, the said ceremony was held at the Philippine International Convention Center where Tagum received a trophy and 500,000 pesos cash prize.

CROWN is a national award given to local government units consistently awarded for their outstand-

ing nutritional programs for three consecutive years.

Mayor Allan L. Rellon led in receiving the award with the City Nutrition Action Officer Jan Dmitri Sator and the rest of the City Nutrition Members, City Councilor Ronald Eliot and Brgy.

DAVAO CITY – A total of 300 indigenous peoples (IPs) or lumads will lead a regimented life after graduating from an eight-week basic military training course, qualifying them as members of the Philippine Army.

DAVAO CITY -- The Compostela Valley provincial government with the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) turned over P5.7 million worth of Potable Water System at Barangay Kapatagan in Laak, Compostela Valley.

This was announced by the Compostela Valley provincial information office on Monday. The project was implemented through the Payapa at Masaganang Pamayanan (PAMANA) which was implemented

by the province.

Role of Teachers in Protecting Rights of the Child (Art.3 of the The Family Code of the Philippines)

Teachers must value the rights of the child since they are our client in school. The following are rights of the child that guide us in teaching.1) Every child is endowed with the dignity and worth of a human being from the moment of his conception, as generally accepted in medical parlance, and has, therefore, the right to be born well. 2) Every child has the right to a wholesome family life that will provide him with love, care and understanding, guidance and counseling, and moral and material security.

The dependent or abandoned child shall be provided with the nearest substitute for a home. 3) Every child has the right to a well-rounded development of his personality to the end that he may become a happy, useful and active member of society. The gifted child shall be given opportunity and encouragement to develop his special talents.

The emotionally disturbed or socially maladjusted child shall be treated with sympathy and understanding, and shall be entitled to treatment and

competent care.The physically or mentally handicapped child shall be given the treatment, education and care required by his particular condition. 4) Every child has the right to a balanced diet, adequate clothing, sufficient shelter, proper medical attention, and all the basic physical requirements of a healthy and vigorous life. 5) Every child has the right to be brought up in an atmosphere of morality and rectitude for the enrichment and the strengthening of his character. 6) Every child has the right to an education commensurate with his abilities and to the development of his skills for the improvement of his capacity for service to himself and to his fellowmen.

The school, through the principal, teachers and stakeholders must educate those who are still ignorant of our childrens’ right so as not to deprive them.

Developing Students to be Critical Thinkers

A lesson is learner-centered if it provides the learners plenty of opportunities to engage in higher order thinking skills. There is a need to address the needs of every student in the classroom. It is important that they must be recognized in the teaching learning process. Our lesson must be learner-centered and it must address 21st century learners.

Teacher must be thinking about how to create an environment in such a way that it is a learner-centered. One of the essential requirements in teaching learning process is the environment. It could be a physical, psychological learning environment.

The physical environment must be addressed by the principal, adviser, teachers, parents and stakeholders in the community. The school must build a good relations with the community stakeholders in order to have a better if not the best environment. The psychological environment is also needed in order for our

students to learn without fear. This connotes that teachers must recognized students background in order to understand their state of psychological preparedness.

Teachers must have activities that promote that promote higher order thinking skills. When students apply, create and evaluate

Since their separation, they had never been communicating or supporting either financially or emotionally to each other,neither minding each other affair’s; Petitioner’s seek judicial decree of divorce, thereby, severing their marriage bond on January 31, 1992, so that they will have free hand to do what a single man or woman could do without marital burdens. Reconciliation between them had already been diligently employed but all proved futile.

WHEREFORE, finding this petition to be sufficient in form and substance, set the initial hearing of this case on January 12, 2018 at 9:00 a.m at which time, date and place. Any interested party may appear and show why the petition should not be granted. With the new policy, the newly hired teachers (those with 0-3 years’ experience teaching in the public school system) shall now undergo the Teacher Induction Program for the three years, covering 6 modules, namely; The Department of Education, The Filipino Teacher, The K to 12 Curriculum, The Teaching Process, The Learning Process, and The School and Community Linkages. Aside from the quarterly training, one of the key features of the TIP is the Mentoring Program, wherein a TIP Mentor (a Department Head, Master or Key Teacher) shall be assigned to orient, mentor and supervise the newly hired teacher(s). Differentiated Supervision and Classroom Supervision will also be employed within the 3-year TIP period.

The Department hopes that the TIP can provide newly hired teachers with the necessary support, and knowledge as they embark on a journey as teachers in the public school system.

Clement hopes the IPs will be part of nationbuilding with the goal of achieving peace and sustainable development not only in their communities but within the area under the 10th ID. He said the IP soldiers are the most qualified to do the task of informing the IP communities about the real motive of the communist movement. The IP Officers and Enlisted personnel know best the culture, practices, customs and traditions and the dialect.

“I advised them not to forget but keep up the culture and tradition of their tribe because they have achieved self-determination and have become model in their communities,” Clement added.

The 300 IPs were part of the 400 new recruits of the 10th Infantry Division Academy to become soldiers.

Their recruitment was made after learning that many of them wanted to join the government forces.

The Army went through the consultation process because they cannot just accept IPs without the recommendation of the tribal leaders, who know the members of their community. To give the IPs wish to become soldiers, some requirements were waived by the Army such as education level,

age, and the civil registry documents.

The lumads, however, were required to undergo the medical examination.

All the new recruits will serve as soldiers for one term (3 years) and will be given the opportunity to re-enlist for another three years if they want. But, they will have to take the Armed Forces of the Philippines Service Aptitude Test (APSAT) to qualify for another three years of service.

The IPs will serve as soldiers and they are entitled to free uniforms, accommodation, and other benefits given to a soldier. PNA
