Misor braces for another typhoon as ‘Urduja’ exits

CAGAYAN de Oro City-The provincial government of Misamis Oriental braces for another tropical depression that might hit Northern Mindanao as Typhoon Urduja exits, provincial risk reduction official said Saturday.

Francisco Dy, Jr., head of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (PDRRMO), said that the weather officials warned of another typhoon identified as “Vinta” to hit Northern Mindanao before Christmas.

“We are on the high level of alert as the PDRRMO mobilizes all municipal disaster teams to adopt precautionary measures to minimize possible damage” Dy said.

On Thursday, about 1000

persons were evacuated to safer grounds in Misamis Oriental as incessant rains spawned by Typhoon “Urduja” triggered flash floods and landslide in the province.

The PDRRMO reported that a flash flood in Lagonglong, Misamis Oriental triggered the evacuation of about 204 households to the town’s covered court.

Provincial officials also reported that hundreds of commuters and pedestrians were stranded when the approach of the bridge in Balingasag, a major highway bridge connecting Cagayan De Oro and Butuan City, cave-in due to raging floodwater.

Christmas carols are in the air "THANK you. Thank you.

Ang babait ninyo, thank you!" Sounds familiar?

Every Christmas season, kids and adults alike go door to door, belting out Christmas carols -- "Jingle Bells", "Silent Night", and “Ang Pasko ay Sumapit” are among the popular ones -- hoping to get in return an "aguinaldo" of candies, chocolates, or cash.

There are those who sing a capella or to the accompaniment of a guitar, tambourine, or any improvised musical instrument.

Caroling used to be simple. These days, however,

caroling includes choreography, costumes and props.

Indeed, this Filipino tradition has evolved in many ways. Want to enjoy the music of carolers as they wish everyone a merry Christmas and a happy new year? Here's where you can catch them.

1. In offices The simplest kind of caroling could well be the one where carolers go house hopping. These days, include office hopping as well.

Usually, carolers inform the office staff the date and time they would arrive. The office management then prepares

an envelope for them.

In my previous work, one family went to the office every year. I've never heard them sing, but the kids danced to several song numbers. The employees were able to watch them because the family went there during the office's Kids Party.

2. In hotels No solicitation is involved here. Hotels around Metro Manila often hire a choir to serenade guests every Christmas season, especially on Christmas day.

Manila every December 25. Some hotels even hire OPM singers to croon as guests enjoy their Christmas dinner.

The Manila Peninsula in Makati, for instance, presented its annual benefit Christmas concert at the lobby last Dec. 10, featuring no less than the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra and singer Celeste Legaspi.

In Club Balai Isabel in Batangas, diners will be serenaded with Christmas carols at the Lakeshore buffet on December 24. The buffet rate is P1,200 per head.

3. Inside buses/ jeepneys Ever y December in Cavite, many individuals

carrying a lapel microphone and a mini stereo would ride a bus, sing a Christmas song, and hand envelopes to passengers.

In Manila, on the other hand, street kids clamber up jeepneys, hand envelopes to the passengers and sing a Christmas carol. Most of these kids carry drums and shakers made of cans.

4. In restaurants There are people who go to restaurants to sing.

I've seen a group of four, armed with a guitar and a violin. That group didn't sing any Christmas song but they still caught the attention of the diners at a pizza house through their good choice of songs and performances.

The Carnival Food Park in Marikina City will hold a Christmas concert at 6 p.m. on December 16. Admission is free.

5. Along the streets/ parks Then there are those who perform where the crowds are. Street carolers include differently abled persons singing in train stations and outside the church.

If you're looking for free performances, you may opt to go to the World Bazaar Festival at the World Trade Center as various celebrities and bands render some song numbers to entertain shoppers.

The World Bazaar is open until December 22.

Getting ready, coping risk during emergency

Just as Typhoon Urduja is making her way out, another tropical depression “Vinta” threatens to spoil the Christmas celebration this week.

The PAG-ASA has reported that “Vinta” is now gathering tons of rain clouds in the Pacific, which might develop into another tropical storm in the next few days.

The weather officials have speculated that once developed into a tropical storm, “Vinta” threatens to landfall in North and Eastern Mindanao on Friday.

There is a reason for everyone in Northern Mindanao to be on alert as the rainy days are not about to end sooner than expected.

The PDRRMO has proven that it has the capability to respond to any emergency situation.

The CYNOSURE often snags at military personnel to head the emergency committee, because these individuals have nothing to do with saving lives and limbs. A mournful note for a worthy brother!

WE mourn for a man who in his lifetime has achieved more things than many of us could have achieved in two lifetimes. In life, he stands head above shoulders among us. In death, he is bigger than Life.

He rises from his earthly beginnings with such a sudden transformation that exemplifies a passion that would be a legend among those who know him way back from his days when he was yet foot loose and fancy free. His awakening rose out from within the God-given talents that call out from

within himself calling him to fulfill his destiny.

No one can clearly remember when he has started his transformation to become the most passionate and disciplined student in the pursuit of a reachable dream. Known for being careless and carefree, or so it seems, he started to pore on his books and magazines that in no time at all, his professors accorded him the respect of a truly intelligent and superior human being.

He can decipher the most complex mathematical and algebraic equations that

would have required many heads to understand. As one Professor would put it, “I never expected that he can earn a grade of One which I have never earned in all my years in engineering school”.

From then on, he gathered all honors, he can get his hands on. He hurdled the Electrical Engineering Board Examination in one clean sweep and became one of the youngest Instructors in his Alma Mater and the Deanship of the College of Engineering was practically prepared for his coming.

Knowing that there is much more to be done, he went on to capture a doctoral degree in Engineering at the prestigious Asian Institute of Technology in Bangkok, Thailand from which he is hailed, at the time of his graduation, as one of the four (4) Doctors of Engineering in the Philippines and the only one from Mindanao.

PH exports expand by 11% The Department of Trade and Industry through its Export Marketing Bureau sees solid growth for Philippine merchandise exports this year as it continues to expand by 11.68% with total sales of $53.11 billion for the period JanuaryOctober 2017 compared to the same period last year with total $47.55 billion of export sales.

For ten straight months, the value of merchandise exports in the review period was shared almost evenly by electronics and non-electronics at 50.78% and 49.22%, respectively.

In a preliminary report from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), YearOn-Year (YOY) growth for October 2017 showed the country’s total export sales increased by 6.6% from $5.04 billion last year to $5.37 billion this year sup-

ported by the double-digit growths of six out of top ten major Philippine exports including fresh bananas.

Six gainers for October 2017 exports sales include gold (297%), electronic e q u i p m e nt a n d p a r t s (43.3%), metal components (21.9%), fresh bananas (20.8%), other mineral products (19.6%), and electronic products (13.8%).

Receipts for top ten major exports for October 2017 reached $4.25 billion with a total share of 79.2% of the total export receipts.

Electronic products led the top ten commodities with total export sales of $2.86 billion, accounting for 53.2% of the total exports revenue for the month of October 2017.

“Export sector is a big employment generator and we welcome these positive developments as this

will translate to more job opportunities,” said DTI Undersecretary for Trade and Investments Promotion Group Nora K. Terrado.

Japan remains as the top export destination for October 2017 with total exports receipt of $871.36 million and a share of 16.2% in total exports.

“Japan is a significant trading partner for the Philippines. We are maximizing good relations that we have with them by introducing and increas-

ing awareness of various design-driven products and services that we can export. We are also seeking new markets while we continue to expand our exports to existing trading partners. DTI continues to apply new approaches and strategies based on trends and changing consumer landscape,” explained Terrado.

MANILA -- The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas’ (BSP) policy-making Monetary Board (MB) on Thursday maintained anew the central bank’s key rates after noting that inflation environment remains broadly unchanged.

The rate of the reverse repurchase (RRP) facility is still at 3 percent, the repurchase (RP) rate is at 3.5 percent, and special deposit account (SDA) rate is 2.5 percent.

In a briefing, BSP Deputy Governor Diwa Guinigundo, after reading the Governor’s statement, said the latest baseline inflation outlook points to a level that is within the government’s 2 to 4 percent inflation target for 2017-19.

This, even as price movement of oil in the international market remains an upside risk on the domestic rate of price increases.

Disgruntled NPA supply officer surrenders KIDAPAWAN CITY -- A discontented member of communist New People’s Army (NPA) operating in the hinterlands of North Cotabato yielded to military authorities, claiming the group was tainted with corruption, a military spokesperson said Wednesday.

Danny Lauda Andip, also known as “Berni”, voluntarily surrendered with his rifle to the Army’s 39th Infantry Battalion in Arakan, North Cotabato, according to Capt. Silver Belvis, 39th IB spokesperson.

Until he decided to yield, Andip served the Squad Finance Logistic Officer of Squad Abe, Front Committee 53. He held the post for more than one year.

Andip revealed that a certain “Jecko,” his NPA commander, has been pocketing the cash that were promised to them when joining the NPA. Andip added that the budget for food supplies was not enough despite the huge amount of revolutionary tax the group had been collecting from multi-national firms.

“The NPA leaders inculcated in us that the government is corrupt when in truth the NPA leaders are the true vultures,” he told Army officials.

Andip told the Army that a lot of his companions in the mountains of North Cotabato and Bukidnon are planning to bolt out of the organization “but are just buying time.”

Lt. Colonel Harold Argamosa, 39th IB commander, said discontent had been spreading within the communist organization and many wanted to get out and surrender but they were repeatedly threatened by their leaders.

“The challenge is on how to reach this individual in order for them to be enlightened from these communist deceitful actions,” Argamosa

said even as he reiterated the government’s offer for them to take the right path and be integrated into the mainstream.

“We are always open for those NPA that would like to surrender, there are many ways in addressing your issues, taking up arms should not be the only choice,” Argamosa said.

OFFICES OF THE MUNICIPAL VICE MAYOR, SANGGUNIANG BAYAN AND SB SECRETARIAT “A good community comes from a good legislation” – a foundation of the Sangguniang Bayan of the Municipality of Alamada, Province of Cotabato in attaining the vision for an innovative and competitive legislation system. It is a mandate of the Offices of the Municipal Vice Mayor and Sangguniang Bayan, with the assistance of the SB Secretary and staff to provide efficient and effective governance by enacting resolutions and ordinances to suppress lawlessness and adopt measures to protect the inhabitants of this municipality.

The different Committees of the Sanggunian have conducted eightyone (81) committee meetings/hearings which catered the influx requests and other concerns that need legislative action.

With an intention of the Legislative Body to bring the government closer to the people, the Sanggunian conducted a Joint Session with the Barangay Councils of Malitubog, Paruayan, Pacao, and Guiling with an objective to conduct a joint session with other 17 Barangays of the Municipality.

This also aimed to assist the barangays to address the problems and to reach out agencies on their concerns through a resolution sponsored by the concerned Committee Chairman.

In order to cater the needs of different department and the general public, the Sanggunian regularly conducted its SB Session every Monday, and if holiday falls on Monday, the next day would be the Regular Session. Every ruling that needs further study and review will be subject for a Committee Hearing or Committee Meeting scheduled every Thursday, with the participation of the concerned heads of agencies, employees, and involved individuals.

The Sanggunian also conducted a Barangay Legislation Program to From January 2017 to present Barangays Malitubog, Paruayan, (December 11, 2017), the Sang- Pacao and Guiling. As a result, the Sanggunian of Alamada and Pigcawayan, with Barangay Councils of Kimarayag and Mapurok and other resource persons conducted site visitations, inspections and series of negotiations and settlements between Sitio Lampaki, Barangay Kimarayag, Pigcawayan and Sitio Dasomangkop, Barangay Mapurok, Alamada.

Ricardo Enriquez Rotoras, who is known to many by several names; he is Rictors to his high school buddies, friends and neighbors, RicRo to some of his long-time friends. He is Brother or Brod Ric to his Masonic and fraternal brothers and he is one great Kuya, to me.

Brother Ric, as President of the Mindanao University of Science and Technology which he helped to build and which he had amalgamated to become the University of Science and Technology of the Philippines (USTP), the first ever integrated government tertiary schools of learning in this part of the Country, has humbly declared the fulfillment of a dream for his Alma Mater and it is decidedly an achievement as President of the powerful Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges (PASUC).

He has walked on the corridors of power, not to seek or gain power for himself, but for the empowerment of the millions of the poor and underprivileged youth whose potentials to build a happy and fruitful community is waiting, is waiting to be free.

His death has not diminished his greatness.

We have enjoyed his goodness and it will be forever, even as he is no longer here.

He is truly a Man and a Mason!

“Through this project, we can also help look on border conflicts among barangays,” Kedtag told reporters after representatives of the survey firms signed the contract at the DENR-ARMM office.

Kedtag said the project aims to extend to stakeholders free land survey and titling services.

“The FLSTP will address land ownership issues and it has the support of big Muslim clans,” he said.
