Drop plan on Chinese telco, group tells DU30 UNRELIABLE services including slow internet connection amid high costs will not necessarily be solved by allowing a foreign player in the country’s telecommunication (telecom) industry, a research group IBON Foundation said. The group made the statement following Malacañang’s announcement last week that the President has invited China to field in its own telecommunication company (telco) to supposedly challenge the duopoly of the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT)-Smart Communications and Globe Telecom.
IBON urged President Rodrigo Duterte to reconsider the plan pointing out that the poor services that consumers of telcos endure today arise from the defective policies of privatization and deregulation of the telecom sector in the past three decades. These paved the way for the consolidation of market power by PLDT and Globe. It said further liberalization of the industry by letting China or any other foreign entity, for that matter, to operate a third telco could only create additional problems for consumers and even complications for national security.
Despite their very high profit margins, the group said the reigning telco giants are apparently not investing enough in infrastructure development to meet the growing needs of consumers and improve their provision of telecom services, especially in the country’s remote areas which are less commercially viable. From 2000 to 2015, it said the average profit margin of PLDT is 40.2%; Smart, 50.4%; and Globe, 46.5 percent. Ma Chung University tackles scientific writing THE Ma Chung University in Malang, Indonesia invited two speakers on December 7, 2017 to discuss strategies on how to write academic journal articles published in international journals. The topic is actually now discussed by all the universities throughout the world. All universities request their faculty members to do research and publish it in the academic journals. During the occasion, the Rector of Ma Chung University, Dr. Chatief Kunjaya, realized that writing academic articles is needed. He suggested that his faculty members can write the articles in English for international publications. The head of the international journal publication and selection, Dr. Leny Yuliati, M.Eng, invited two speakers for the event. The first speaker is Prof.
E. Sadtono, PhD, a professor of linguistics and language teaching. The second speaker is Dr. Djuwari, the specialist of academic journal article writing for publication. “Dear teachers and fellow researchers, International journal article is important for us as faculty members. Since it is written in English, we have to know the strategy in writing an academic journal article. Therefore, lest discuss this topic together with these two distinguished speakers,” said Leny Yuliati, before the agenda was started. Actually, Prof. E. Sadtono was Djuwari’s former advisor of Dissertation when Djuwari was still a student of Doctoral Degree.
