Misor governor thanks CHEd for donating P29.8m worth of books

Emano said the provincial library received 406 pieces of theses and dissertation books worth P29.8 million.

LIGAN City--The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) – L anao del Norte Chapter raised more than P1.2 million from the Million Volunteer Run fund raising simultaneously conducted early morning on Sunday (December 8) around the country.

In Lanao del Norte, the start and finish line was inside the Mindanao Civic Center (MCC) in Tubod town.

Greg Galucan, officer-incharge of PRC Lanao, said the amount raised during the event is big help to the delivery of basic services of the organization such as the blood, health and safety program and activities and the training of the youth volunteers.

“This is ver y useful especially if there are calamities... in our disaster management service. We are experiencing now a lot of floods, earthquakes... the funds we raised will be used there,” Galucan said.

In Lanao del Norte, there are 8,000 volunteers based in

barangay with 44 members of the emergency response unit in each barangay according to Galucan.

They are composed of residents from different ages “who has the heart to serve the people in their barangay.

Around 2,000 volunteers participated in the fun run that has 3K (3 kilometer) and 5K categories, that was composed mostly of youth, employees and officials of the provincial government of Lanao del Norte, municipal officials and personnel of the Philippine National Police and Armed Forces of the Philippines.

Jabbar finished the run at 12 minutes and 22 seconds, a second ahead of Sultan at 12:23.

The two are coming from Munai town. Jabbar is a Sangguniang Kabataan Chairman of Barangay Poblacion.

It was their first time to join a fun run because they are into basketball.

In the 3K female category, the 24-year old Jane Tagoldol from Tubod town, Lanao del Norte, won with 15:50.

really into marathon competition but for only exercise to have a healthy body.

A Little Show Of Horrors: As diversion or defiance, the Philippine teleserye is suddenly displaying acts of resistance

YEAR ago, Oscar Alb ayalde, w ho was still getting the hang of his appointment as the new chief of the Philippine National Police, the enforcer of President Rodrigo Duterte’s war on drugs, declared how unhappy he was with an action-drama series on nationwide television. In a press briefing in November 14, 2018, he said that FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano (The Hillbilly) “gives us a bad impression.” He complained that the show, which depicted corruption in high places, was “unfair” and “very disturbing” as it besmirched the image of the police. The bespectacled police chief especially noted how the teleserye portrayed the PNP chief as a villain.

The TV series, as it happens, is a work of fiction. In real life, Albayalde, scheduled to leave the service in November 8 this year, went on early retirement in midOctober due to allegations about his connection to socalled “ninja” cops who aid, instead of apprehend, drug lords, aside from running off with the loot.

The television show still airs, carried by the Manilabased TV network ABSCBN, and is not the only teleserye that has dared to display acts of resistance.

This year, another TV series on the same network was bolder in its caricature

of Philippine politics. In The General’s Daughter, which has already wrapped up its run, politics, drugs, and social media troll farms were interwoven into a suspense thriller that triumphed in the ratings war against rival network GMA. The main character went by the surname Bonifacio; she was the long-lost daughter of an Army general named Marcial.

It’s a name game: Marcial Bonifacio was the name declared in the passport used by the late Filipino opposition leader Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. on his flight back to Manila from his exile in Boston in the United States during the martial law regime of former President Ferdinand Marcos. Aquino famously opposed Marcos rule and was assassinated upon his arrival at the Manila International Airport in 1983.

This kickstarted a series of events that led to Marcos’s downfall and the rise of Aquino’s wife, Corazon, into the Philippine presidency.

Duterte, who happens to have replaced Corazon’s son, Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, in the country’s top elected post, in 2016, has not only welcomed the Marcos family back into political prominence but has also imposed martial law in the Southern Philippines, although for reasons not related to the Marcoses.

Among the most con-

spicuous features of martial law is the curfew, which curtails the movement of citizens, especially at night.

In the past few weeks, another ABS-CBN teleserye has turned the spotlight on the curfew. The Killer Bride, a horror-drama series which began in August this year as a ghost story and gained traction with its multilayered narratives of love and revenge, featuring popular actors, has, without warning, suddenly gone all-out as a political fable. It brings its fright-fest to the terrifying arena of politics as it illustrates how a community is besieged by a killing spree orchestrated by its top political leader.

In its episodes just before Halloween, a mayor in some out-of-the-way province where banana plantations abound—some televiewers wonder if this is a sly reference to Davao City, the address of power in the Duterte presidency — orders his henchmen to slaughter those on his kill list. They are to do this at night by pretending to be the people’s worst nightmare, the spectral “killer bride” whose mythical bloodlust can be blamed for the carnage.

The mayor institutionalizes this climate of fear by imposing a curfew at night.

“We know what is good for the people,” he tells the media. “Trust me.”

They say that education is the only treasure that can’t be taken away from us by someone else. Such fact is true.

Indeed it isn’t just a treasure but a key towards achieving one’s goals and ambitions.

A lot of youth nowadays are neglecting education. While others are struggling to finish their education, others too are not minding at all.

The government has been so pure with providing free education from kindergarten to the tertiary level. Such is being provided because the government wants to make sure that all citizens of the country are not left behind. A lot of programs about providing quality education are handed and circulating

into action with the aims that Filipino people are well rounded and are globally competitive. Yet, there are some who disregards it easily.

Education is the right of every Filipino citizen. Therefore, making it accessible to all regardless of the economic status an individual is in. When an individual is full packed with education, it is a guarantee that a brighter future awaits.

Hence, education is a key to success.

There is no reason for a Filipino citizen not to be given an opportunity to embrace education for it is a right given. Thus, we must fully embrace and give importance to education because it is one of our tickets to changing our lives for the better.

Her work place gets good business with all the killings in town. As the camera follows Emma around the mortuary, televiewers espy one cadaver after another. It’s as if the TV show haunts and taunts: This is the new normal—how we navigate around the brutal

fact of death all around us.

At a time when truthtelling in the Philippine media has become a tightrope act, a shrewd tactic has apparently emerged: fictional storytelling on television that maneuvers its way into the currents of public discourse.

By unfolding the reign of terror in its imaginary world as part-ghost story, tapping into Philippine mythology where the supernatural can be a compelling expression of the otherwise helpless citizens’ need to claim power for themselves in any way they can to subvert the status quo, The Killer Bride manages to tickle its community of viewers into the hearty

guffaw of an insider’s joke.

Fables and allegories are mainstays in the rich history of dissent in the Philippines. At the height of Marcos’s authoritarian rule, the newspaper columnist Niñez Cacho-Olivarez sneaked past the Ministry of Public Information by filling her columns with light, “harmless” storytelling, such as her version of “The Emperor’s New Clothes.”

A small farewell to Keith

Cagayan de Oro City--Allow me to use this corner for a sentimental piece on a beloved brother-in-law who recently passed away.

Larry Keith Dennis did not like to be the center of attention and kept true to that description when he took his last breath. He just faded away but the ties he had with those close to him, including myself, are a lot more enduring. It took me a while to think about what to say and write and this is what I came up with.

Keith is known for his wide smile and personal warmth to his close friends and loved ones and even to strangers. He left without saying goodbye and I think he meant it that way but he did leave behind memories and moments that can last a lifetime for all of us close

to him who can tell stories about him.

During the public viewing of his remains I saw him like he was peacefully sleeping. He was placed on what looked like a bed draped in a quilt with stars befitting a decorated war veteran. At 5’10 sure he commands attention and a second look especially with his bald head and military cadence that was evident even when he wore shorts and shirt.

Keith left behind wife Doris, daughter Lorie, son Brian, son-in-law Greg Tee, daughter-in-law, stepchildren, grandchildren and brothers Bill, Ronnie and Dean, nephews and nieces— all of whom gathered one beautiful day in autumn at Myrtle Beach Memorial Gardens to witness Keith’s

cremation. His ashes were placed in his final resting place a day before Veterans Day. Keith served in Vietnam and was a recipient of the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 DVC Vietnam Gallantry Cross With Palm. He was well loved by everyone he knew.

It was his baby brother Dean who did the eulogy, quoting Bible verses that were Keith’s favorite. The wind blew when Dean told those in attendance during the wake to ‘celebrate’ Keith’s life.

In my mind’s eye I saw glimpses of the past when Keith and Ronnie were together, when we visited them at Myrtle Beach for any occasion. Keith and

Ronnie loved talking about their childhood and their shared laughter evinced the innocence and joy of their youth.

When they ate together and Ronnie offers him a bite of his own food without actually giving it to him, they would burst into laughter and Keith’s smile would reach his ears. Keith shaved his head and it didn’t dawn on me that he used to have hair until Ronnie told me that Keith wanted to keep his hair short before.

Having been assigned in several Muslim countries from Indonesia,Malaysia, Singapore and even Thailand I have develop ( in consultation with Muslim Organization ) my own Guide for Health Care Professionals and Pastoral Carers The purpose of this information is to assist nonMuslim healthcare professionals to come to a better understanding of Islam so that they can provide appropriate and effective care to their Muslim patients.

Most healthcare professionals may have to care for a Muslim patient at some stage. Being cared for in a hospital, day surgery facility or nursing home can be a very stressful experience.

For carers, knowledge of and sensitivity towards a patient’s religious and cultural background can help in lowering stress, make the hospital stay more comfortable and speed recovery.

One Islam – Many Muslims

Though Islam is a single religion, it is important to recognise that Muslim people are not a single homogenous group. There Muslims from over 70 countries all around the world: from Europe (ie Albania, Bosnia, Turkey), Africa, Asia (including Central Asia, South Asia, South East Asia), Australia , New Zealand , Pacific Islands, and North and South America.

The cultural diversity of the Muslim community makes it difficult for anyone to prejudge the expectations or needs of individual patients, for example, with regard to religious observance. When in doubt, it is always best to ask.

Aspects of General Care • Preservation of life overrides all matters presented in this brochure.

• Islam places the onus of practising religion on the individual.

• Cleanliness is part of Islamic faith.

• Strong emphasis on

the virtues of visiting the sick.

• Where choice exists, medicines containing alcohol/pork derivates should NOT be used.

• Same sex health professional as the patient whenever possible. Unnecessary touching between non-related people of the opposite sex should be avoided.

• . For female patients, there is an overriding objective of modesty and privacy.

In some cases, a close family member of the same sex may assist in the washing of the sick person.

• A beard is considered a very important religious symbol to some Muslim male patients. Like any other patient, permission must be obtained to shave any part of the beard.

Birth • Reversible contraception (eg pill, condoms) is acceptable.

• Termination of a pregnancy is mandatory if the pregnancy constitutes a seri-

ous threat to the life of the mother, then termination is permissible irrespective of the period of gestation.

• There are other situations where termination of a pregnancy is permitted (severe congenital abnormality is an example). It is a not a decision that should be made lightly.

• Muslims consider the fetus after the age of 120 days is a viable baby.

• After delivery, the placenta (which is part baby) should be offered to the parents for disposal.

BAD days do happen! Let’s hope they will just be few and far between. But there certainly are days when we will have a perfect storm, when everything seems to conspire against us.

Physically we can be a wreck. Emotionally we are shattered. Mentally we seem to be numb and frozen.

Even spiritually we seem to be dead. Deadlines seem to be chasing us like hell. And disasters and crises seem to be all around: in the family, the office, with friends, in love life, etc. There are times when we seem to drown in our helplessness.

We have to make sure that we do not over-react to this phenomenon. We have to be ready to face them.

Ignoring them or thinking that there will be no toxic times and that everything will just be sweet and fine, is quite naïve. Things will just get worse. There is always hope, a light at the end of the tunnel. Morning will surely follow the night.

A good reaction can be what is suggested in a responsorial psalm of a Mass: “Turn to the Lord in your need, and you will live.”

Perhaps repeating those words would reconnect us

to the source of hope that does not defraud us ever.

Sometimes we just need a little of self-psychologizing to keep ourselves going and ride out the storms. We have to learn to play little tricks with our own selves.

This idea may sound insignificant, but actually, with it, many have succeeded in turning around their predicament.

But, yes, it is always with God that we can manage to deal with our difficulties.

Christ himself reassured us: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my

Selling of drugs Church leaders optimistic about new rounds of peace talks now online, says

hurch leaders have expressed optimism that the planned revival of the peace negotiations will push through for good this time, following the announcement of President Rodrigo Duterte he is reopening talks with the communist rebel movement.

“We are glad that peace still has a place in the President’s heart,” said Bishop Felixberto Calang, an Iglesia Filipina Independiente leader and convenor of the Sowing the Seeds of Peace in Mindanao, in an interview Monday (December 9).

However, Calang said “it must be Duterte who will be calling the shots” so as not to muddle the peace process.

“Let him (Duterte) decide what is best. The advisers are just there to advise, but the final say is on him,” the prelate said.

He added peace negotiations are a “political matter that must be decided by the civilian authority.”

In a statement it posted on social media Monday, the Philippine Ecumenical Peace Platform (PEPP) also welcomed Duterte’s announcement, adding they

support “a peace that is not won by the barrel of a gun, nor by demonizing the enemy, but through constructive dialogue.”

“This is through the pursuit of a peace agreement that is mutually acceptable and will address the root causes of the longestrunning armed conflict in Asia to date,” PEPP added, referring to the communist insurgency.

During the three-day 8th Ecumenical Church Leaders Summit on Peace organized by PEPP in Silang, Cavite, attended by 110 church leaders that started on December 6, the group urged both the

Philippine government and the rebels’ political arm, the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP), to work for the signing and approval of the Comprehensive Agreement on Social and Economic reforms (CASER) and for the declaration of a ceasefire.

The church leaders also urged the government to release political detainees, including NDFP peace consultants, on humanitarian grounds and for the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP), New People’s Army (NPA), and NDFP to release their prisoners of war as well.

In addition, the PEPP has also instructed “faith communities to expand the

effort to conduct creative activities (formal and nonformal education, both in public and private schools) and dialogue under the banner of PEPP, and to further broaden the support for the resumption of the GRPNDFP formal peace talks.”

We will not stop and we will break the walls among religions and build bridges instead,” the group said.

KIDAPAWAN CITY – Selling of illegal drugs, in particular methamphetamine hydrochloride or locally known as shabu, has been “upgraded” or has changed its approach, a police officer here said.

The transaction is done through online selling and purchase or through the social media, said Lt. Col. Ramel Hojilla, Kidapawan City PNP director.

Hojilla hinted online selling of illegal drugs is becoming rampant, which makes it difficult for police and anti-drug agents to tract the operations and those behind it.

But Hojilla has yet to validate and verify if online shabu selling is becoming widespread among drug users and couriers here.

“If you ask me if online selling of illegal drugs is rampant, yes, it is. But we have yet to determine the extent of online purchase of shabu among our users and [suspected] couriers here,” he said.

Hojilla admitted that tracking of those involved in such online business is “too difficult.”

“We are of the position that the peace talks would be faster if it would resume where they left off and no preconditions would be imposed. The last document the two negotiating panels agreed was the Stand-Down Agreement that binds the military, the police, and the New People’s Army from hostilities as ‘goodwill and confidence-building measures’ for the previously agreed resumption of the fifth round of talks supposed to be held last June 2017,” Zarate added.

Both parties were supposed to take up the ceasefire and Comprehensive Agreement on Social and Economic Reforms (CASER) in the fifth round scheduled on May 27 to June 2, 2017 in The Netherlands, but the government panel did not participate “for lack of compelling reason,” due to the NDF’s instruction to NPA units to intensify offensives across the country following President Duterte’s declaration of martial law in Mindanao on May 23 that year.

The GRP and NDF peace panels signed on April 5, 2017 an interim joint ceasefire agreement that would take effect only upon the approval and signing of guidelines and ground rules.

The panels were set to discuss the guidelines and ground rules during the fifth round of formal talks.

Cullamat said the appeals and issues of the masses should be heard and attended to and the peace talks resumed so the roots of the conflict would be addressed.

She hopes the resumption of the talks is not a “patibong para sikilin at ikulong ang mga dadalo dito” (ploy to oppress and jail those who will attend).

Emma, the mortuary cosmetologist running around town in baffling off-theshoulder blouses, also uses scare tactics to manipulate the townspeople. Played with a hustler’s wide-eyed duplicity by the popular actor and singer Janella Salvador, Emma pretends to be possessed by the spirit of someone mistakenly thought of as dead. She has since grappled with her conscience, though, finding herself aghast at how she uses people as pawns in a game of deception and betrayal.

By getting everyone’s hands dirty in all this drama of manipulation (well, O.K., except for the clueless, affable character portrayed by the matinee idol Joshua Garcia), The Killer Bride aspires to an ars poetica—a declaration that, as diversion or as defiance, the show’s storytelling can be a kind of truth-telling as it goes against all-too-real odds in wresting control of the narrative.

I recalled the Dennis family Christmas party at Dean’s home when Keith would fetch Laura May, Bobi and Catherine who were cousins of their mama for the party and after the get together he would also bring the ladies home.

If anyone of the aunts are indisposed Keith would be at the doorsteps. He did not leave his brother Bill when Bill mourned his wife Cheryle’s death.

When Ronnie had heart surgery in 2011, Keith and Doris stayed with me for a week. A small gesture of kindness that would take a lifetime to remember.

Billy said he would always remember a trip he took with Keith and his wife Doris,Dean and Anne a couple of weeks before he died when they saw the Ark before heading to Ohio to attend the NFL Hall of Fame and the Ohio Amish people.

That was also Keith’s last trip outside North Carolina since he came back and spent time fixing their new home.

I heard he spent one night at the new home alone days before the heart attack.

Keith always made sure everything was done and in order, his stepson Troy said. And I can attest to that when I visited Keith and his wife Doris and I saw that everything was in place.

Their house was in order but still retained its warmth and homey ambiance.

I didn’t know he was good in playing basketball,indoor handball and saxophone and he must have joined the angels and jammed with them playing a saxophone. There is still a lot to tell about Larry Keith, the fourth son of the late William Dennis and Mary Guinn.

To his widow Doris, Keith was the best part that happened to her life. “My whole world is upside down and it will never be the same again. I love him so much,” Doris said in her Facebook post. I join Doris in saying goodbye Keith and may your memories live forever in the hearts of people who loved and continue to love you.
