CAGAYAN de Oro City-Cagayan de Oro has declared war against Dengue as “Oplan Kontra Dengue,” a massive cleanup drive, kick off in a motorcade here Tuesday.

Just as Cagayan De Oro City raises armed against Dengue, the city of Iligan was declared under “the state of calamity” as Dengue cases climbed in that neighboring city, 88 kilometers west of here.

Fe Bongcas, the City Health Officer of Cagayan De Oro City, said that the city health office has adopted various dengue awareness campaign where all barangay units are mobilized to join in the massive cleanup drive.

ILIGAN City--A parish priest from one of the parishes in Lanao del Norte died due to cardiac arrest, Tuesday morning, August 20, in Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay.

Fr. Chito Soganub said around 250 priests from all over the Philippines were preparing for the Episcopal ordination of Bishop-elect Jose Rapadas at 9 a.m. on August 19 when Fr. Albert Trazo was seen sweating.

He was immediately brought to the nearby hospital but expired while on the way.

“I just heard they are looking for a rescue and ambulance and I learned that Fr. Trazo was brought to the hospital,” Soganub said in a phone interview.

While the homily was ongoing, somebody was looking for “a priest from Iligan” because Trazo has to be prayed over.

“The next information we got, he was dead,” Soganub said.

Trazo is presently serving a parish priest in Maigo, Lanao del Norte, which is under the territorial

Clarin town launches Balay Silangan CLARIN, Misamis Occidental, Aug. 13 (PIA) --The Municipality of Clarin, together with Philippine National Police (PNP), Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and other partner agencies, launched Balay Silangan, the 4th in Misamis Occidental and 9th in Northern Mindanao.

The ‘Balay Silangan’ offers a three-month in-house program with three phases focusing on Republic Act 9165 otherwise known as ‘The Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002’, personal and life skills, and livelihood programs primarily for the drug pushers.

This serves as an instrument for the reformation of drug personalities who availed of the plea bargaining.

A community- based reformation center called “Balay Silangan” or House of Hope intended for the use and rehabilitation of drug offenders is formally turned over and opened at Barangay Lapasan, Clarin, Misamis Occidental. IDPs in Marawi mark 79th City Charter Day

MARAWI City--Hundreds of internally displaced persons joined on Monday, August 19, a motorcade and program to celebrate the 79th charter anniversary of Marawi City, with changes and high hopes to rise again after the five-month war in 2017 that killed thousands of civilians, extremists including government forces.

The displaced families who are still living in an evacuation tents and

some are living in transitory shelters joined with the employees of the local government unit (LGU) and other government agencies and humanitarian groups to celebrate the event that made the former Dansalan became Marawi City in 1940.

This year’s charter day celebration is the first celebration since the siege in 2017 and the second after Marawi City Mayor Majul Gandamra was elected for his first term in 2016.

The siege was ongoing in August 2017 and the security was not yet stable in 2018 that the LGU was not able to celebrate for its 77th and 78th years, respectively.

This year’s anniversary brings hope to Marawi residents according to Gandamra.

The gathering, he said did not only to mark what can be considered as Marawi City’s birth but also to ponder and reflect what Marawi means to them.

My understanding with Cathay Pacific CEO’s Resignation RUPERT Hogg had been CEO for Cathay Pacific since May 2016 and has done a really good job. Was with Cathay Pacific’s parent company for over 30 years.

As he described his resignation: “It has been my honour to lead the Cathay Pacific Group over the last three years. I am confident in the future of Hong Kong as the key aviation hub in Asia. However, these have been challenging weeks for the airline and it is right that Paul and I take responsibility as leaders of

the company.”

The Chinese government has accused Cathay Pacific employees of participating in “illegal protests,” and requested that the airline start sharing all information about employees not only flying to China, but also passing through Chinese airspace.

This led to Hogg’s resignation. According to my source China’s Civil Aviation Administration asked Hogg to hand over a list of Cathay Pacific employees who had participated in the protests.

My sources, he did provide that report… but he put only put his own name on the list.

I understand that this is a very sensitive issue. I have respect for what the people of Hong Kong and those opposing to it.

I was once in the same shoes, I have so much respect for what Hogg has done. I feel like for the most part there’s such little accountability among corporate executives, especially in the airline industry.

and defend the workforce even at the expense of his own career is something you don’t often see in the corporate world.

I’d say that any airline or company would be lucky to have him, though I guess we’ll see how that plays out, since I imagine many airlines wouldn’t want to do something that would so obviously annoy China.

Corruption in Malacanang

VALENCIA, Bukidon -The Crusade for Clean Government, a volunteer anti-corruption watchdog sees corruption happening right at the very seat of power – in Malacanang.

Presidential AntiCorruption Commission (PACC) says two cabinet secretaries are now under investigation for corruption, and more --with around 200 government officials are listed for alleged involvement in corruption.

With this sad note, corruption remains pervasive as ever despite the effort of President Duterte to curb this malpractice in his three

years of ascendancy.

Because of insatiable greed, these workers in government had continuously betrayed -- one after the other -- their pledged of incorruptibility before President Duterte.

Corruption in government is massive and packed with immense power and dominance, placing the Philippines in the list of most corrupt countries in Asia.

This menace is a fight of man’s indefatigable greed, where power corrupts, and where the powerful is corrupted in high places and down to the last man in public service.

That said, there is one thing Malacanang needs to address in earnest -- and that is the drive against graft and corruption in all fronts of the bureaucracy.

Sinking a warship, not a declaration of war

THE unauthorized and illegal sailing of China’s battleships in the Philippine waters without being accosted only shows the demeaning and weak Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

The action of China violated the territory of the country. It was a direct assault on the country’s sovereign rights as a country and as people. China losses respect on the Filipinos because of the Philippine government’s willingness to become a “laughing stock” in Southeast Asia.

True, the government is raising diplomatic protest.

However, a diplomatic protest is irrelevant to a country where human dignity is a taboo. A country driven by greed, whose power is derived out of the barrel of the gun, is disrespectful of life.

The Philippines must assert its sovereign rights at all costs. It has the right to sink an unknown vessel who refused to identify itself, much less, declare

its purpose in sailing the Philippine sea.

When an unknown vessel (warship or not) sneaks unto the Philippine territory, without identifying itself, the AFP could use force to neutralize it. The AFP’s jet fighters must scramble and bomb the unknown vessel who refused to communicate and declare their intention.

This is discussed in response to a query on how to deal with China’s battleships, which sneak throught the Philippine waters without communicating to the AFP. The reply is direct and certain: Sink them!

If the Chinese battleship responds, then the battleground is drawn in the area where the incident is taking place. It does not mean that the Philippines would be officially at war with China. After all, it is Congress who could declare war against any country.

The militar y action taken by the Philippines would, however, send a strong message to China that the Philippines could not

be bullied by any country professing to be militarily powerful. When a robber sneaks and enters a house, the occupants have the right to depend themselves by all means.

One remembers Taiwan, a fraction of a nation who refused to be bullied by China. In 1949 and during China’s infamous “cultural revolution,” thousands fled from mainland China and settled in Formosa, now known as Taiwan.

The settlers of Taiwan then were known as the “Koumintang.” The Koumintang Party State has their own “National Revolutionary Army” also known as the Republic of China Armed Forces when the Republic of China was promulgated in the 1947 constitution.

The Republic of China Armed Forces fled the mainland China toward Taiwan after losing the civil war to the communist in 1949. One of the major opponents of the RCAF was the communist People’s Liberation Army (PLA), the army of

the modern day aggressor, China.

At present, China claims Taiwan to be part of their country and wants to attach to the mainland China at all costs. The Taiwanese government refused and maintain its independence as a sovereign nation. In response to China’s threat that it would take Taiwan at all costs, the Taiwan government warned China that it would shoot down any fighter jets that will encroach Taiwan’s airspace.

Que vadis, Philippines?

Isn’t it a shame knowing Taiwan, a small country, but willing to fight and protect its people as a sovereign nation? Perhaps, the Philippines is the most friendly nation around the world that it is able to shallow its pride amid insult, mockery, and bullying by countries whose “means” of existence is through saber-rattling and harassment.

DavOcc town bans use of plastic straw

DAVAO CITY--The municipality of Jose Abad Santos (JAS) in Davao Occidental province has prohibited the manufacture, importation, sale, and use of single-use plastic straw.

In an interview on Monday, Mayor Jason John Joyce said he signed Executive Order 19-011 last August 15, ensuring the proper segregation, collection, transport, storage, treatment, and disposal of solid waste through the formulation and adoption of the best environment practice in ecological waste management, excluding incineration.

“I have noticed a lot of

plastic straws in the rivers and seas. That’s why I initiated to ban the use of plastics here in JAS. In the next few months, we will endeavor to widen the scope, to include all single-use plastics,” Joyce said.

He clarified that he would review all policies to ensure that they are not anti-poor.

“For now, it is so hard to ban the use of shampoos, sachets for condiments and the like, since these are common products bought by our people. But for the straws, we can live without it,” he said.

More Clark City-GenSan flights urged to boost economic ties

CLARK FREEPORT, Pampanga -- Members of the Metro Clark Advisor y Council (MCAC) are asking various airlines companies here to mount flights between this Freeport and General Santos City (GenSan) to allow more possible opportunities for investments, trade, and tourism for both areas.

This was gleaned in a resolution passed by MCAC officials chaired by Clark Development Corporation (CDC) President and Chief Executive Officer Noel Manankil, and co-chaired

by Mabalacat City Mayor Crisostomo Garbo during their regular meeting here on Monday.

MCAC members include Angeles City Mayor Carmelo Lazatin, Jr., Capas, Tarlac Mayor Reynaldo Catacutan,

Bamban, Tarlac Mayor Jose Antonio Feliciano, and Porac Mayor Jaime Capil.

In the resolution, the MCAC underscored the importance of connectivity of Clark airport to major points of tourism and commerce in the country, while citing the development of the new passenger terminal here.

Prior to the resolution of MCAC, three chambers of Pampanga also expressed support and enthusiasm in the creation of a direct flight between Clark and GenSan. This is through a joint resolution passed by the Pampanga Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. (PamCham), Metro Angeles Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. (MACCII), and the Clark Investors and Locators Association (CILA).

BARMM budgetary aid seen to spur economic activities

MANILA -- The country’s chief economist expects the increased budgetary support to newly established Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) will likely result in more economic activities, which will benefit the people in the region.

During the First Bangsamoro Global Economic Summit on Monday, Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Ernesto Pernia said the national government will provide an annual block grant, which is the automatic share of the Bangsamoro government in the national internal revenue tax collections.

He said the allocation is equivalent to 5 percent of the net national internal revenue tax collection, or around PHP70 billion for the fiscal year of 2019 alone.

“A special development fund amounting to a total

PHP50 billion, or PHP5 billion per year for 10 years, is allocated for the rebuilding, rehabilitation, and development of conflict-affected communities. Subsidies for development and infrastructure-related expenditure are

guaranteed by the national government for the next five years,” he added.

Pernia, also DirectorGeneral of the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), noted that the increased budgetary support to the BARMM is in addition to the power and authority granted over certain sectors and activities to create its own sources of revenue and advance the region’s economic development.

BSP to offer P100 billion under term deposit facility

MANILA -- The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) will offer PHP100 billion under its term deposit facility (TDF) during the auction on August 22, 2019.

In an advisory, the central bank said the six-day facility, a day shorter than the regular tenor because of the holiday on Wednesday, will be offered for PHP40 billion.

Both the 13-day and 27-day facilities, also a day shorter than regular tenor, will be offered for PHP30 billion.

During the TDF auction last August 14, rate of all tenors declined which the BSP, in a statement, traced to the reduction in the central bank’s policy rates last August 8.

Toyota PH targets sales of 165K vehicles this year

MANILA -- Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) expects to double sales volume of its Hiace Grandia model, as it introduced to the Philippine market on Monday its new variants to hit vehicle sales of 165,000 units this year.

TMP president Satoru Suzuki told reporters they expect the launch of the All New Super Grandia to boost the Hiace, which had a 54.6-percent total market share in the utility van segment as of July.

Suzuki said the firm targets to sell 400 units of the new models starting next month, and hopefully maintain such sales level by 2020.

“That’s more than double because of the new model,” he said, noting family and companies in various industries prefer these van variants.

Suzuki said it is banking on other models also boosting the company’s sales goal this year.

On Monday, TMP completed the Hiace lineup this August with the launch of the All New Super Grandia in three new variants-- Elite, Leather, and Fabric.

166 health workers deployed in Davao City villages

DAVAO CITY--The City Health Office (CHO) and the Department of Health (DOH) deployed 166 health professionals to several barangays in the city to further boost the delivery of health services.

Monday’s deployment is composed of doctors, dentists and nurses under the national government’s Human Resource for Health (HRH) program with the aim of addressing the lack of doctors, dentists, nurses in poor villages, CHO chief, Dr. Josephine Villafuerte

said.

Villafuerte said the health professionals will provide public health and clinical services, strengthen the other administrative and managerial concerns in the rural health unit such as operational health planning, researches, disease surveillance, staff capability building, and program management.

“They will complete the necessary sets of health professionals in every barangay,” Villafuerte said, adding the focus of the deployment is on far-flung villages and barangays that still lack the

necessary health services.

Vice Mayor Sebastian Duterte thanked the DOH for assisting the city in filling the need for medical professionals.

“Health is one of my priorities and with this deployment, everyone in the community - even in the far-flung barangays - have easy access to (services) and medicines,” said VM Baste, who has been acting mayor since Mayor Inday Sara Duterte took a leave in July.

That said marriage did not last long due to lack of love and affection until the relationship manifested incompatibility and sustained misunderstanding between petitioners and reached the point of irreconcilability and they separated for six (6) years now, they decided to separate live physically in bed and board, thereby, executed Memorandum of Agreement in order to formalize their separation. Since there separation, they had never been communicating or supporting either financially or emotionally to each other, neither minding each other affair’s; Petitioner’s seek judicial decree of divorce, thereby, severing their marriage bond on January 18, 2003, so that they will have free hand to do what a single man or woman could do without marital burdens. Reconciliation between them has already been diligently employed but all proved futile.

WHEREFORE, finding this petition to be sufficient in form and substance, set the initial hearing of this case on September 20, 2019 at 9:00 a.m. at which time, date and place. Any interested party may appear and show why the petition should not be granted. “In order to pay for our huge hospital bills, we decided

to sell all our farm animals and consequently, our nito weaving also halted,” Joel recounted. But this trial did no discourage them. Joel and Analiza’s family rose again.

Full of hope and optimism, the family resumed their basket production using nito.

The couple also exposed themselves to several skills enhancement programs, trusting that such could help improve their lives.

“I attended a skills training in ketchup making. I was also given the opportunity to participate in a microenterprise development and basic employment skills training. Finally, I became a member of the Sustainable Livelihood Program Association (SLPA) in 2016.

I used the money from the seed capital fund amounting to Php 10,000.00 as capital for our nito weaving venture,” Analiza recounted.

Last 2018, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) conducted a four-day Training on Nito Weaving in Barangay Nueva Villa, with Joel and Analiza as resource persons. Earlier, DTI attested that the nito products crafted by the couple are of good quality.

Jose F. Villanueva Elementary School also plans to tap the couple to train its pupils in nito weaving.

Hard work pays With the family’s efforts and with the aid of Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program, all seven of the Geverola children are attending school. Presently, the eldest daughter, Angelyn is set to finish Bachelor of Science in Accountancy at John Paul College, Davao City. Angelyn is also a working student. She finished high school through Department of Education’s Alternative Learning System (ALS). Despite the hardships in life, she never stopped schooling.

“Poverty is not a hindrance to pursue your dreams,” Analiza said.

Through hardwork and their enhanced craft, family members were not only able to enjoy quality life, they were also able to share their craft to other people in the community. Through their endeavour, the practice of treasured weaving tradition could be passed on to generations to come, prospering the art of the B’laan Indigenous community in the process.

The Geverola family continues to aspire greater dreams, such as building its own space for production of nito-woven materials and at the same time, use the space to display their products.

“All of these dreams are possible, through resourcefulness and diligence. Our family has proven through our experiences that we can achieve success if we work harder together,” the couple declared. (DSWD)

As Cagayan De Oro City declared a massive antidengue campaign here, the local officials in Iligan City declared the city under the “State of Calamity” as Dengue cases climbed to about 233 cases in the past week since August 3, 2019.

On August 6, 2019, the DOH reported that the dengue cases in Iligan City totaled 867 from January 1, 2019 to August, 3, 2019 – an additional 233 cases was recorded from Aug. 3, 2019 t0 August 20, 2019 with three death reported.

“There is already a dengue outbreak in the city because of the rising dengue cases since August 3, 2019,” Jo Pantoja, the city’s spokesperson said.

Claveria town village chairman’s son lands 2nd place in Vet Med Board exam PATROCINIO, Claveria town - The government and the people of Barangay Patrocinio, this municipality, has proudly celebrated the success of one of its young professionals.

In Claveria town’s official Facebook page, the people of Claveria posted messages congratulating the success of one of the healthcare professionals and future leaders of their place.

This, as Paul Valcorza,Jr, son of Brgy Patrocinio Chairman Paul Valcorza, Sr topped the recently concluded Veterinary Medicine Licensure Examination.

Paul Jr just graduated and finished his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine course at Central Mindanao University in Maramag, Bukidnon, and he took the board examnation in August this year. Luckily, the Board of Examiners has already posted the results and Paul, Jr. bested over a thousand examinees and landed as second placer.

CHALLENGES BEFORE SUCCESS Paul Jr’s father was only a Barangay Chairman of Patrocinio, a small barangay in Claveria town, Misamis Oriental. The challenge of supporting the dream of his son was tremendous. But as a father who is always there

to support his son, Paul’s father did everything he could to support his son’s education at a very prestigious university in Bukidnon Province the Central Mindanao Unversity.

Paul’s family knew very well how hard it is to sustain his education.

More so, that his school is very far from their hometown in Patrocinio.

The finances to be incurred for tuition fees, board and lodging and all other miscellaneous were really a difficult challenge to handle every month.

But Paul Jr’s parents work hard in order to sustain and augment the monthly finances their son can incur while schooling at CMU in Bukidnon Province.

FULL OF MOTIVATION But Paul Jr was full of motivation to succeed and to follow his dream of becoming a healthcare professional. He always made sure that the hard efforts of his parents to sustain his education will be reciprocated with finishing his degree with flying colors, so he studied very hard and stay away from all temptations of being a student, such as just enjoying with friends and joining circle of people

which might only ruin his education.

As Paul, Jr was a picture of good and outstanding student, he always follow the worthwhile advice of his parents to concentrate on his chosen profession so that all the money and support coming from his parents would pay off.

He studied hard believing that finishing his degree would really make his future brighter, aside from the constant reminders of his hardworking parents, even if he was away from home.

REAPING THE FRUITS OF SUCCESS Luckily, the family’s hard efforts in sustaining his education as well as Paul Jr’s patients, perseverance and determination to succeed paid off when he finally graduated his degree in Veterinary Medicine.

Paul Jr took the board and landed second place among the more than 1000 examinees who tool the board exams held in selected cities in the country.
