Ozamiz City has new Mayor, Vice Mayor

CAGAYAN de Oro City-Second Councilor Girlet Luansing is the new acting City Mayor of Ozamiz City pending the resolution of the case filed against Vice Mayor Nova Princess Parojinog for alleged possession of illegal drugs and illegal possession of firearms.

Vice Mayor Parojinog was arrested during the simultaneous raid of the Parojinog houses early dawn Sunday of the combined police team of the provincial police office, the Ozamiz City Police, and the provincial Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) where Mayor Reynaldo “Aldong” Parojinog and 14 others were killed in an alleged shootout with the raiding team.

Peace education pushed as antidote to extremism

CAGAYAN de Oro City-Apart from restoring the physical facilities and infrastructure lost in the siege of Marawi, a Maranao educator urged the country’s education officials to make the rebuilding effort an opportunity to revisit the education curriculum.

Dr. Nagasura T. Madale, a cultural anthropologist, said it is important to strengthen peace education and start it among the young to prevent, in the longer term, the growth of violent extremism especially in areas of the country vulnerable to inroads by Islamic Statelinked militants.

“Educational institutions must teach the concept of peace and non-violence as an alternative option to resolve conflicts,” emphasized Madale, a retired professor at the Mindanao State University.

He cited as an instance that as a result of the Marawi siege, there is a

need to “manage the relations between and among Maranaos, Maranaos and non-Maranaos, and Maranaos and the broader society.”

Interviewed Saturday in the sidelines of the International Conference on Marawi Post-Conflict Reconstruction here, Madale explained that the effort at fostering inter-cultural understanding among the various peoples of Mindanao and the rest of the country “must be boosted in order to increase our society’s collective capacity to address the phenomenon of extremism and radicalism.”

Madale’s proposal echoes the sentiments of the Bishops-Ulama Conference (BUC), a key institution for dialogue in Mindanao, and Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana, a retired soldier.

In a recent statement, the BUC and its dialogue partners said “peace education is one best antidote to violent extremism.”

“Rebuilding Marawi means restoring broken relationships among peoples and the key institutions for fostering inter- and intra-faith dialogue, and inter-cultural understanding,” the statement read.

“For us, rebuilding Marawi is about cultivating a society that embraces social, cultural, political and religious diversity… (and) a national community that is respectful of the aspirations of various peoples,” the statement further read.

“I believe in the need to rebuild relations,” Lorenzana said in his keynote address.

Bringing normalcy In a message read for her, Education Secretary Leonor Magtolis Briones told conference participants that “more than just repairing and rebuilding classrooms,” the challenge for the Department of Education (DepEd) is “how we can bring back normalcy to our students’ lives.”

“Education must con-

tinue (as) education cannot wait,” Briones said.

Briones added that the agency is now in the thick of preparing for the eventual reopening of classes in war-torn Marawi “once the go ahead has been given.”

She is confident the agency’s ‘Adopt-A-School in Marawi’ initiative, students “are able to come to class with books, and pencils, and paper, and more than just a roof over their heads.”

DepEd assistant secretary Resvee Escobido said that as a result of the continued fighting, some 14 schools have sustained damages, all accounting for about 203 classrooms.

Total cost to rebuild these infrastructure and restore its related facilities is estimated to be P2.3 billion, Escobido added.

House support for rebuilding Cagayan de Oro Rep. Maximo Rodriguez assured the conference participants, mostly coming from the Maranao civil society community, that

the House leadership is committed to supporting the needs of Marawi’s reconstruction.

Rodriguez disclosed that part of the financial requirements for the effort will be contained in a supplemental budget being drawn at the House.

Apart from Rodriguez, some other current stalwarts of the so-called Mindanao bloc in the House attended the conference: Bukidnon Rep. Malou Acosta-Alba, Iligan City Rep. Frederick Siao, and Deputy House Speaker Ferdinand Hernandez of South Cotabato.

Rodriguez said the Mindanao bloc will ensure the funds for rebuilding are made available through the necessary legislative actions.

LGU-owned science-tech school now recognized as ‘higher education institution’

KIDAPAWAN City--After four years of waiting, the first technology school in North Cotabato managed by a local government, finally got the nod of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).

The CHED’s regional office in Soccsksargen (Central Mindanao) region, sitting en banc, passed Resolution Number 463-2017 on July 4, 2017, recognizing the Makilala Institute of Science and Technology (MIST) as a higher education institution (HEI).

The resolution states that the school has complied with the requirements set by the Commission, under its Memorandum Order Number 32, series of 2016 and Memorandum Order No. 42 series of 2016.

On July 28, the investiture of Dr. Pedro Rigonan as the first duly-recognized President of the MIST was held at the Pedro Martinez gymnasium in Makilala. CHED-12 regional director Dr. Maximo Aljibe led the ceremonies.

The MIST, the first LGUled tertiary school in North Cotabato, was established after the Sangguniang Bayan passed Municipal Ordinance Number 275 on March 31, 2014.

The school offers free tuition and miscellaneous fees for bonafide residents of Makilala, according to Mayor Rudy Caoagdan.

The school opening was held on June 14, 2014, offering only two degree courses, Bachelor of Science in Entrepreneurship and Bachelor of

In June 2015, it offered additional courses, including Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, Associate in Computer Technology, Diploma in Midwifery, and Bachelor of Public Administration.

Last year, the MIST established a senior high school that offered all strands in the academic track.

Caoagdan said that every year since MIST was established in 2014, the LGU has allotted P10 million for its

annual operations.

Cops hunt down BIFF COTABATO City--Police and militar y forces are hunting down members of outlawed Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) who tried to shoot down a private chopper carr ying Maguindanao Gov. Esmael Toto Mangudadatu and his brother Saturday, police said Sunday.

Mangudadatu, his brother Mayor Freddie Mangudadatu of Mangudadatu town, Maguindanao were aboard a helicopter piloted by Capt. Dennis Figueroa en route to the Army’s 6th Infantry Division headquarters for a speaking engagement when the shooting occurred over the town of Datu Salibo.

They were all unharmed. ” We are hunting them down, we have intelligence information about the attackers,” Senior Supt. Agustin Tello, Maguindanao provincial police director, said.

Mangudadatu who was seated beside the pilot of the three-seat aircraft said a bullet almost hit his head.

A bullet hole was found in the glass right window.

The Maguindanao police, in hunting down the attackers, were backed by elements of the 40th Infantry Battalion.

Tello said the gunmen fired at the chopper as it passed above Sitio Dagading, Barangay Tee, Datu Salibo town at 10 a.m.

A day earlier, BIFF members who pledge allegiance to ISIS, set off an improvised bomb that injured nine soldiers of the 40th IB in Raja Buayan, a few kilometers from Datu Salibo.

Mangudadatu has been known for his hard stance against jihadists believed to be hiding in Maguindanao. On several occasions, Mangudadatu spearheaded summit against terrorism in the province that earned the ire of the BIFF. He said he was not cowe d by t he attempt against his life, stressing what he has been doing is for the sake of poor Moro people in Maguindanao.

Instructional Materials: It’s Beneficial for Learners

The essence of instructional materials is congruent to many specifically to teachers who really love doing it. Though its quite strenuous at some point but the eagerness of doing it is beneficial for the learners.

A different type of instructional materials permit teachers to be more creative and profound in doing so. It builds confidence and a sense of gratification because the main drive is for the learners to understand the lesson easily. Thus, the power to grasp provides significance in teaching.

Its benefits however, probably engrosses learners in the class ,motivate critical think-

ing skills which allow them to become reflective and independent and can relate on real life situations making them highly motivational too .To which the pacing of learners in understanding is quite rapid.

Much more that instructional materials is being designed to develop skills, depending upon the goals and objectives like the listening skills, teamwork and cooperation, giving and receiving feedback.

That the art of independence is more acceptable in having an interactive response in the class.

It is vivid to the educators that having an instructional materials enable learners to be involve in the class and develop their self esteem to its full potential as

a good competitor among the group.

Towards the end of the lesson the feeling of fulfilment and realization from teachers point of view encapsulate the core of teaching that providing an instructional material to the learners is a great achievement .

Thus, department of education must always support and extend more aid that the creativeness of a teacher be supported constantly to provide a quality education by setting standards in real world. The art, goal objective and benefit of instructional materials is a pivotal in teaching and attaining learning to every learner in terms of materials to be used.

CONTINUING SPORTS ENGAGEMENT IN CASINGLOT, TAGOLOAN, MISOR – VICE GOVERNOR JJOEY G. Rest in Peace Mayor ‘Aldong’ The killing of Ozamiz City Mayor Reynaldo “Aldong” Parojinog sent a Shockwave in the island of Mindanao.

Parojinog and wife Susan along with brother provincial board member Octavio of Misamis Occidental and sister Mona, were killed during a raid on his house in Barangay San Roque, Lawis , Ozamiz City early Sunday dawn.

According to Police Chief Insp. Jovie Espenido, the Ozamiz City Police Chief, the security personnel of Parojinog who were designated as Barangay Peacekeeping Action Team (BPAT) fired at the raiding team, which resulted in the firefight.

For instance, why the raiding team has to serve the search warrants at dawn when they could have served the warrants during office hours of the day? Espenido told the media that they could not serve the warrants during the daytime because there many people in the Mayor’s house. Isn’t it incredible?

One could simply recall the case of Albuera town Mayor Rolando Espinosa, killed inside his detention cell in Baybay Provincial Jail in Leyte, in an alleged shootout with the police who were reportedly serving a search warrant midnight of November 5, 2017.

transparency, all searches by the law enforcers should be witnessed by a representative from the media and the local government unit (barangay officials). Did the raiding team follow this procedure? If the security men of Mayor Parojinog were armed to the teeth, as alleged, and that they fired first isn’t it incredible that the raiding them suffered no casualties at all?

News around the world will always go on parade for cash. I have yet to see a single city in the country that does not cater “girls with bed habit” as young as 16 years old and up. And because of their massive presence in society, the police do not mind them anymore thus making it a regular part or fixture of life. To them there are more important crimes happening in the country that need more attention.

Prostitution is the oldest profession that nobody can touch. It is a thing that pleases everyone and surely it proliferates anywhere.

Saving an almost extinct heritage in my milieu WHEN we talk about arnis as the national sport, we could say that in Bohol, that is only on paper. The law, indeed, declares arnis as the national martial art and sport of the country through RA 9850. But in my milieu, we can hardly find arnisadors in school athletic meets. Arnis clubs are rare.

This scenario led me to forget about my academic qualifications and teach arnis, at least for a while, at Busao National High School (Maribojoc town) through the initiative of my friend, Florante Evasco, who is a member of the Philippine Sports Commission.

Anyway, aside from being an erstwhile academician in a Center of Excellence

business program, I also trained in dynamic arnis style in Iloilo until the Philippine Dynamic Arnis system-- where I enrolled under the direct tutelage of Grandmaster Rogelio Galvarole--gave me a fourth degree, black belt. What is this rank for if I really sweat for the advanced skills, now that I behold a dim prospect of the heritage in my home province?

Losing this heritage could be as tragic as forgetting our national language that is why I momentarily strip myself of a perceived academic “decoration” as a former research-productive associate professor who had mentored for 17 years and holder of Master of Management specialized in

Public Management from the University of the Philippines in the Visayas, among others. I do not take my qualifications as hindrance to take a “menial task” because I want the public to understand that forgetting a national heritage is taboo and intolerable.

For me, the present public appreciation should not be the basis for defining what is glamorous and otherwise: I teach arnis because I am a Filipino and I understand what makes Filipinos become worldclass—and that is not merely copying other people’s ideas.

Randy Bañas, Cagayanon gospel recording artist in the US

RANDY Bañas is unarguably one of only few Filipinos who has landed a recording contract in the United States.

A gospel singer at his native Christ the Rock Christian Church in Balacanas, Consolacion, Cagayan de Oro City, Bañas was sent by his church to its United States counterpart, the Church for All in Owensboro, Kentucky in 2015.

Because Bañas is already a talented musician among his church fellows in Cagayan de Oro City, he was tasked to become a music minister in Church for All. And it was there that his fate began mapping out.

At Owensboro, Bañas befriended a music enthusiast named Aubrey Nhering.

Nhering introduced Bañas t the bigwig music recording producers in Owensboro.

The rest is history.

In a span of seven weeks,

Bañas was able to compose seven original tracks. “I had all the time in the world.

BUTUAN CITY – Hospital officials said they expect 500 blood donors will come to the Butuan Medical Center (BMC) ON August 2, 2017 in conjunction with the Citywide Bloodletting by the hospital.

The one-day bloodletting will start at 9 am, considered as Biggest and most-awaited bloodletting program in the city.

The event will be conducted in conjunction with the formal recognition by

the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) as an authorized blood collecting unit and blood station. Because of this, BMC patients in need of blood would no longer go to the Red Cross since BMC is no longer included in the no balance billing (NBB) of said hospital.

BMC officials also urged blood donors to proceed to the hospital on August 2, 2017 starting 9 am. They said this is an opportune time for them to help especially poor patients.

MSME participants from various industries who attended seminars and trainings during the two-day event at the PTTC in celebration of the SME Week Free Seminars held on July 18-19, 2017.

DTI-PTTC SME Week Free Seminars: 39 MSMEs Sign Up for E-Commerce The Philippine Trade Training Center (PTTC), the training arm of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), recently conducted a total of 23 free seminars geared towards enhancing MSME’s managerial and technological capabilities during SME Week held on July 18-19, 2017 at the PTTC grounds.

With the theme “Moving Towards Skilled, MarketDriven and Engaged MSMEs”, the two-day event was attended by about 367 MSMEs.

After participating in the UREKA Forum, 24 signed up for Shopinas, an online store of Philippine products, and an additional 15 after attending the seminar on “Doing Business in E-marketplaces.”

This positive response from the MSMEs is an indication that by providing them free and easy access to information, entrepreneurs are ready and willing to digitize their business.

Mother-tongue based education

THERE is a growing trend around the world to support mother tongue instruction in the early years of a child’s education. In Southeast Asia, this is apparent in a rising number of educational programs that utilize this approach.

However, the Philippines is the only country in the region to have instituted a national policy requir-

ing mother tongue-based multilingual education in the primary school years.

While studies have long supported the use of mother tongue as the language of instruction, they have primarily been conducted in community rather than national settings.

Although local languages have long been acknowledged as positively contrib-

uting to the enhancement of learning in school, they have been co-opted mostly as a nationalist argument against English, American neo-colonialism and imperialist globalization.

The c ur rent init i atives to establish mother tongue-based education reconfigure the terms of engagement in Philippine post-colonial language politics. It must account for the fact that the mother tongues could be the right-

ful media of instruction. In the process, it must tease out issues concerning the decoupling of Filipino as the national language as a/ the medium of instruction and deal with the politics of inclusion and exclusion in bilingual and multilingual education.

Crucially, it is also important not to forget the polemics of content visà-vis the role of language in the reconfiguration of such politics.

Importance of Education in Human’s Life

Education, if viewed beyond its prevalent boundaries, forms the very essence of all our actions. What we do is what we know and have learned, either through instructions or through observation and assimilation. When we are not making an effort to learn, our mind is always processing new information or trying to analyze the similarities as well as the tiny nuances within the context which makes the topic stand out or seem different. If that is the case then the mind definitely holds the potential to learn more, however, it is us who stop ourselves from expanding the horizons of our knowledge with self-doubt

or other social, emotional, or economic constraints.

Getting an education is important, as most career paths require at least some education and training.

Though the decision to continue one’s education is a personal choice, it’s worth considering if knowledge and experience are important. If one has any career goals, he will most likely need an education to achieve those goals. Learning the importance of an education can help one motivate to learn more and achieve great things.

People who have completed an advanced education often have more and better opportunities available to them because of their education.

Studies have shown that

having an education - even a primary education - can help low-income workers earn more money and find a better economic situation. Employers look for educational achievements.

Even having a high school degree will reduce the risk of unemployment and increase the average lifetime earnings of most working adults.

Beyond the professional opportunities that an education affords people, having an education may also be correlated with living a better life in general. Some studies suggest that people who stay in school are less likely to end up having legal troubles later in life.

Having a higher education can help one live a longer life. This may be because of better working

conditions that come with an education, or it could be because earning an education helped remove people from adverse domestic situations.

In addition to living a longer life, people who pursue an education tend to be happier in life. That’s because having an education has been shown to make people better problem solvers who are better equipped to manage dayto-day problems.

Some studies suggest that simply earning an education, regardless of subsequent income or job contentment, helps people have better mental health later in life. In other words, having an education may help one find hobbies or passions that give him a sense of fulfillment.

and cultural life around them.

We expect schools to educate our children to become critical consumers of Internet services and electronic media. When students are using technology as a tool or a support for communicating with others, they are in an active role rather than the passive role of recipient of information transmitted by a teacher, textbook or broadcast. The student is actively making choices about how to generate, obtain, manipulate or display information. The cellular phone, also known as mobile phone, is one of the defining technologies of the early 21st century.The invention of mobile phones has helped conquer communication barriers and bridge the gap among people from different walks of life all over the world.

Mobile phones have become a widespread phenomenon in the present time with over 16 billion users around the globe. It is now a multi-billion dollar industry and it is expanding every day since people are becoming more technology-minded.

Nowadays, cell phones have come to their skyrocketing popularity.

In this modern time the idea of living without cell phones seems ludicrous. It is very difficult to imagine our lives without a cell phone as it is now a necessity. This pocket-sized tool is no less than a mini computer. They can do anything – from a standard phone call to surf the internet and do many other stuffs.

The very first positive impact of cell phones is quick and easy communication. With mobile phones, one can communicate with anyone from anywhere at any time. At a basic level, they allow people to connect with one other no matter where they are in the world.

It definitelybridges the communication gap of people from all walks of life.

Another positive point is that cell phones have become a source of unlimited entertainment. The things, which we never thought would be present in a mobile phone, are now possible.

Cell phones have come into existence which not only help someone in making calls but also help him to stay entertained. Someone can play games, listen to music, watch videos and movies, do a research and do lots of other stuffs through his phone.

In addition, cell phones have many features that are beneficial to the society.

They have also serve as handheld computers that let people quickly and conveniently perform tasks as diverse as banking, research, word processing, translation and voice recording.

Moreover, cell phone is a great tool to keep safe amidst calamities. One can easily call and ask assistance from a rescue team when disaster strikes. One can also send a group message to his loved ones and friends to get prepared and keep safe about natural or

man-made calamities.

Indeed, it is very true that cell phones carry multiple benefits; however, just like any other invention they have also negative effects if it not used properly. According to a study by the Pew Research Internet Project, people have the tendency to let cell phones distract them from important activities and weaken their interpersonal skills. They impair people’s social skills.

Besides, the accessibility and diverse features of smart phones lead people to constantly use their gadgets in situations that may be inappropriate, such as work, school and family gatherings. Furthermore, the messages and notifications that arrive to cell phones make the users constantly interrupted. As a result, they find it hard to focus on important tasks that require extreme concentration.

According to the National School Safety and Security Services, text messaging can be an aid for students to get cheating.

The camera in a cell phone can be used to photograph examination questionnaire.

It can also be used to take photos of other students in a way that is a violation of privacy.

In addition to the above mentioned drawbacks, the Pew Internet Research Project noted that people are also becoming accustomed to the brief, delayed,and impersonal communication style of text messages. These make it hard for users to effectively and confidently communicate with others in real life.

It has also been reported that most of the accidents happening nowadays are due to using mobile phones while driving and even in crossing the busy streets.

Apart from accidents, mobile phones have negative impact on health as well.

The Department of Health reported that using cell phones for a longer period of time leads to eye strain, headache, increase of weight due to lack of exercise and sleeping disorders. The most alarming effect is that he radiation of cell phone causes testicular and brain cancer.

To sum it all up, the aforementioned pros and cons of using cell phones clearly remind us to use the gadget wisely. We must bear in mind that cell phone can absolutely be our best friend. Nevertheless, it can also be our worst foe. Thus, let’s be intelligent enough to choose the first one.

She was quoted as saying Duterte has no business in her office.

Morales is one executive the country needs to dismantle corruption in the government.

I am unhappy to know many of those who surrendered in the war on illegal drugs initiated by President Duterte have returned to their old ways and went on selling the prohibited items. This is sad and as predicted by analysts the fight will not stop the illegal drug business because the matter involves addiction.

This issue is very difficult to escape from the moment the same is stuck in our body.

It can be remedied though but one has to undergo so many side effects, I had some bad experience when I departed from the ugly habit of smoking cigarettes many years ago. I needed a blind determination that led me to depart from smoking.

I wish to reiterate my previous suggestion that the government should embark on new ideas to increase food production. We must strive to stop importing rice from Thailand and Vietnam because we can produce them here. We still have vast of land to cultivate and waiting for farmers.

We need modern farming to increase yields. We need to support our farmers by way of giving them incentives to produce more.

If former President Noy Aquino has indeed committed blunders during his term and is liable criminally, he must pay for it and go to jail.

I just hope his presidential immunity cannot help him ward off the prosecution since he can avail on such thing. Anyway the highest court will determine his fate on the matter. Legal experts think he can escape the case while others have views on the other side of the coin.

I am thankful that in this arnis mentoring initiative at Busao, I have partnered with Mr. Evasco who is a like-minded patron in

sports. His priority aligns with the country’s pursuit for patriotism as he promotes the sport-art in his hometown. We envision the barangay to become the hub of arnis experts in the province who can multiply their skills like a virus. With our initiative to redeem this dying art, we hope to see the heirs of Dagohoy truly becoming warriors of change—no longer looking down on themselves as they compare with other nations.

We are not praying for mishaps, but the province of Bohol had just encountered some Abu Sayaff members months ago. Even without guns, the art—practiced with or without sticks or weapons--gives one more chance of survival if confronted with terrorists hostage-takers or robbers.

The training keeps one from panicking too much in crisis situations.

Arnis-- also called pananandata in Tagalog; pagkalikali, Ibanag; kabaraon and kalirongan, Pangasinan; kaliradman, Bisaya; and didja, Ilokano—has become our national martial art and sport since 2009. Based on RA 9850, it is defined as an indigenous Filipino martial art and sport characterized by the use of swinging and twirling movements, accompanied by striking, thrusting and parrying techniques for defense and offense.

This is usually done with the use of one (1) or two (2) sticks or any similar implements or with bare hands and feet also used for striking, blocking, locking and grappling, with the use of the same principle as that with the canes.

Arnis has already been prioritized in Palaro games since 2006. There have been already initiatives made by the Department of Education (DepEd) in emphasizing the national sport, such as the DECS Memorandum No. 294 Series of 1995 which entailed the Arnis Development Program Phase 1. But until now, we do not yet see a strong Filipino martial art program among many schools. In some provinces like Bohol, how can the citizens appreciate a national sport when it is “alien” or alienated as it tails in the priority of school initiatives?

What I see is the schools’ inability to deal with the supply side in bringing in the important intangible heritage. How can schools compete for a national sport if they do not have arnis mentors? How can they have competitive arnis teachers if they seem to just set aside the issue and be content with such a rationale—that there are no experts around and they do not know where to find them?

The time calls for a decisive action. I suggest that school division superintendents create items for an arnis mentor per school.

The arnis master needs not comply with academic requirements and passing the board exam used in teaching other subjects be-

Take him or her as a Filipino teacher—only that verbs are executed in solo or doble baston porma and the elegant art of surprising a weapon-yielding attacker with bone-breaking barehand techniques. The master should just be a college level and a certification that he or she is at least a plain black belt or an equivalent.

Upon entry, the arnis master can demonstrate the art with expert jurors who also validates the competence of the mentor.

School leaders should consider that there are nine types of intelligences and the Filipino martial art does not lag behind the linguistic and mathematical intelligences.

This is true, especially if we acknowledge that we have bodily-kinesthetic geniuses in our midst-- Pacquiao and a few arnis grandmasters.

Making our arnis appreciation at par with other countries’ appreciation demands that we nurture our forefathers’ brainchild.

Legislators should help by passing a law that supplements RA 9850, requiring the DepEd divisions to hire arnis teachers as specialists who do not anymore tinker with other matters in the academia.

Mayor Parojinog and his daughter, Vice Mayor Nova Princess Parojinog was mentioned by President Rodrigo Duterte as one of the suspected “drug lords” in Mindanao engaged in narcopolitics. Nova Parojinog was reportedly linked to Herbert “Ampang” Colangco, a highprofile inmate in the New Bilibid Prison, known as a leader of a robbery gang and drug lord.

While Parojinog admitted that his daughter was once linked to Colangco, he said that he did not like the affair and asked his daughter to dissociate and avoid Colangco. Parojinog also denied any business link with Colangco and has vehemently denied allegation that he was engaged in illegal drug trade.

Well, Aldong Parojinog is gone along with all the malicious accusations against him. May he rest in peace and let history prove him right or wrong.

With his exceedingly impressive academic background—graduating salutatorian at the Tagoloan Central School and valedictorian in Xavier University High School—he was prepared to receive an education with one of the most prestigious universities in the country. His academic training in Economics as an academic scholar of the Ateneo de Manila University as well as his Jesuit formation through his engagements as Senior Representative of the Cervini Eliazo Resident Students’ Association (CERSA), Assistant Vice-President of the Ateneo Economics Association (AEA), and membership with the Ateneo Student Catholic Action (ATSCA), Entablado (Ateneo theater group), Ateneo Kagay-anon Association (AKA) and NAMFREL Quick Count Volunteers in Quezon City Chapter for the 1998 National Elections would only serve to further cement the looming realization in him that what his beloved country needed most was “change.”

Change is coming Since his election, much has been done but the agenda for change needed a leader who understood what that meant for the people of Tagoloan. In 2010, Yoyoc began his crusade through his campaign for the mayoral seat; though this road would be long and hard for Atty. Yap. Despite the difficult losses in the 2010 and 2013 elections, the clamor for justice and change only grew louder and louder and for someone like Yoyoc, the sound resounded too deeply to keep him from bringing his agenda forward in the last 2016 elections.

With Vice-Mayoral Bet Pastor Timkang and Councilors Issur Alfante, Oca Baal, Vito Casiño, Eric Emano, Lamberto Neri, Uriel Paguidopon, and Mai-Mai Sabio-Pobadora, the promise that came with the national campaign of then-candidate Mayor Rodrigo Duterte of Davao City that “change is coming” galvanized the Change Tagoloan movement. The change Yoyoc envisioned may not have come for the municipality of Tagoloan, but like the driving forces behind his movement is too strong to be limited by any vote. Yoyoc would soon find himself working with the Duterte administration in a different capacity.

Unrelenting forces Much like his pursuit of justice is unrelenting, so is Atty.

His political career may not have come as conventionally as most public servants who

come from more well-known Filipino political families, but much like our unwavering President pushing past all opposition, Yoyoc shows no signs of letting up.

Much is always expected from him, but one thing is certain: the unrelenting forces of Justice and Change that have been driving this administration forward has brought Atty.

Yoyoc Yap to where he is today and will continue to do so for as long as this country needs change.

NPA releases captive police officer to President Duterte DAVAO CITY -- The New People’s Army (NPA) on Friday (July 28) released PO1 Alfredo Basabica Jr. in Baganga, Davao Oriental.

Basabica, 26, was held captive for 17 days.

He was on his way to Davao City when he was captured by the NPA around 4 p.m. on July 11 in Compostela town, Compostela Valley province.

Basabica was met by his parents and his fiancee Princess Dacuycuy, whom he was supposed to marry last Saturday (July 29).

The release came in the midst of the government’s termination of the peace talks with the communist group.

President Rodrigo Duterte earlier cited various reasons for the termination, including the ambush of members of the Presidential Security Group (PSG) and of Police Officers in Negros Oriental.

However, despite the cessation of peace talks, the Front Committee 25 of the NPA requested to release their Prisoner of

War (POW) to President Duterte.

The Office of the Special Assistant to the President of Secretary Christopher Bong Go, facilitated the release of Basabica and even transported the police officer from the area

12 DavNor PWD to open livelihood center, say TAGUM CITY, Davao del Norte -- The Davao del Norte Federation of the Association of Persons with Disabilities will inaugurate its Livelihood Center in Barangay San Isidro, Tagum City on September 2017.

Federation President Ricardo Biag bared during the Kapihan sa Kapitolyo that the livelihood center will empower the PWDs in the province as it will cater different livelihood skills.

Biag said that center within the 600sqm lot of Engr. Darlito Palermo will accommodate a plant nursery, computer works, woodworks for miniature pieces and fabrication of school chairs.

He said that the center is a concerted effort of the government agencies like the Department of Labor and Employment, Department of Science and Technology, City Government of Tagum and Provincial Government of Davao del Norte.

Biag also disclosed that they are needing volunteers right now to finish the construction of the building.

Davao Light holds its annual tree planting activity at the Cleanergy Park It was a green day for the employees of Davao Light and Power Co., Inc. as they held a tree planting activity last July 15, 2017 at the Cleanergy Park in Sitio Punta Dumalag, Matina Aplaya, Davao City.

A rou n d 3 7 0 D av a o Light Team volunteers participated in the tree planting activity, which is simultaneous with the other business units across the entire Aboitiz Group in the Philippines. The volunteers were composed

mostly of employees from Davao Light, team members from the AboitizPower Distribution IT Group based in Davao, and some members from the Institute of Integrated Electrical Engineers.

The participants planted a total of 3,360 mix of mangrove propagules and seedlings of Molave and fruit bearing trees. This is part of the 11,500 target trees to be planted within the year.
