DAVAO City--The Mindanao grid would not be affected by the El Niño phenomenon due to its current energy mix and sufficient supply status, Mindanao Development Authority Assistant Secretary Romeo Montenegro said.

“Mindanao’s current energy mix and supply status may be able to spare Mindanao from the effects of long dry spell to our power situation,” Montenegro said on Tuesday.

He explained that the hydropower sources now accounted for 30 percent of Mindanao’s energy mix unlike five years ago when it was 50 percent, making the island’s power production vulnerable to environmental disturbances.

AROUND 600 students of Southwestern University (SWU) PHINMA enjoyed a day of fun, games, and competition during the annual Basic Education Day on Feb. 22. They showed their knowledge, talents, and capabilities and displayed STEM (Science Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education in action through problem-based learning.

The event featured one of the biggest chess tournaments in Cebu City with about 280 pairs of players facing off against each other at the University Coliseum.

SWU PHINMA’s School of Education invited National Masters Eduard dela Torre and Rommel Ganzon who gave a talk to inspire future chess grandmasters. Ganzon also demonstrated an exhibition game in which he competed simultaneously against elementary teacher and chess coordinator for Grades 4 to 6 Jonathan Paradero and Junior High School Chess Tournament champion Anton Bayno.

Students of Southwestern University Phinma compete to solve Rubik’s Cube puzzles in the shortest time possible, in one of the highlights of the school’s recent Basic Education Day.

PHINMA’s initiative called Chess Time which students are required to attend for a specific number of chess hours every week, giving them the opportunity to earn badges for every win and to enjoy and master chess under the spirit of sportsmanship.

Chess Time is one of the initiatives under the STEM-based curriculum being implemented this school year for Grades 1 to 7, and is designed to teach students 21st century skills, such as communication, collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, computational thinking, decisiveness, and wise judgment.

kids all these skills while developing their focus, discipline, and strategic thinking. It is one gateway for STEM education, and our chess program in the school is the path through that gateway for our budding future grandmasters,” said College of Education Dean Roselyn Fortunado.

Another highlight of the Basic Education Day is the Robotics SumoBot Competition in which robots made by the students attempt to push each other out of a circle. Students also participated in Rubik’s Cube Speed Competition, with speed cubers solving the Rubik’s Cube at lightning speed.

Grade 1 Engineers also staged their project-based learning presentations while Kinder princes and princesses offered a special number. At the same time, obstacle and lego inflatables were provided for additional fun and play. “ We c h a l l e n g e o u r students to expand their imagination while learning to sharpen critical and creative thinking,” said Fortunado.

Plant-inspired buildings to rise on Victoria Plaza Thursday, April 4, 2019

AVAO City––A mix of “iconic” medium- and highrise buildings inspired by some exotic and endemic plants of Mindanao will rise within the 9.6-hectare property of the Victoria Plaza mall complex, an official of a Hong Kong-based design company said.

Walter V. Melicor, chief financial officer of the Elements Habitare, told reporters in an interview during the formal takeover ceremony Wednesday held inside Victoria Plaza’s Cinema 5, which currently houses the Harvest House City Church, that the development would have five phases.

The Lim family, which operates the homegrown New City Commercial Corporation (NCCC), took over the mall management on Wednesday after announcing its acquisition on March 12, at an undisclosed amount.

Melicor said the first two phases would have a five-star hotel, a condominium and serviced apartments; a twintower in phase 3; NCCC headquarters in phase 4; and a four-story mall in phase 5.

The designs of the most iconic components of the 9.6-ha development, such as the twin-tower, NCCC corporate building and mall

took inspiration from the exotic plants of Mindanao, he said.

He added the design of the twin tower would be inspired by the pitcher plant, a carnivorous plant found in Mt. Hamiguitan in Davao Oriental province and other forests of Mindanao, the corporate building by the exotic mangosteen fruit, and the mall by the petals of the waling-waling plant endemic to the island.

Melicor’s team designed some of the world’s iconic buildings, among them Marina Bay Sands of Singapore, Galaxy Macau, a casino resort in Macau, and Okada Manila, a luxury hotel casino in the Philippines.

Melicor said the Lim family would decide if it wants to retain the old structure of the mall, but added the current conceptual design might require a total demolition of the old structure to give way to a new one.

He said the current structure might not support the proposed expansion of the mall.

“We are moving forward to the future. The sentimentality will always be there, in the place but not in the building. I think the building — we have to enhance and make it iconic building at par with the world,” he said.

But NCCC president Sharlene A. Lim assured the old mall building would be retained but it would have a facelift.

She said the company plans to proceed with a phase-by-phase development of the old Victoria Plaza Mall as it did for its NCCC Mall in Maa before a massive fire destroyed it on December 23, 2017.

The fire incident killed the mall’s key custodian and 37 call center agents of Survey Sampling International.

4 hurt as supporters of two political rivals clash in Lanao

ILIGAN City--Four supporters of two mayoralty candidates in Salvador town in Lanao del Norte were wounded in a gunfight yesterday morning.

The identities of the wounded supporters remained unknown as of press time, but police Major Glyndo Pujanes, chief of Salvador Municipal Police Station, said two of the victims belong to the group of Farhanie Ampaso Tawantawan, who is running for mayor under the Partido

Federal ng Pilipinas-Hugpong Ng Pagbabago, while the other two belong to the group of Bebot Umpa, a mayoralty candidate under Partido Demokratiko Pilipino (PDP Laban).

In an interview, Pujanes said Umpa’s group was passing in convoy in front of the municipal hall when the commotion, that resulted in an exchange of gunfire, happened around 10 in the morning on April 3.

“Ump a’s g roup was shouting ‘Bebot! Bebot!’ as they passed by. Tawantawan’s supporters were along the highway that

time. They responded by also shouting and both parties exchanged words that turned into a heated arguments, and later to a gunfight,” he said.

The Umpa and the Tawantawan families are known political rivals in Salvador town.

In the 2016 election campaign, where Umpa was also running for mayor against the husband of Farhanie Tawantawan, the two groups were also involved in a gunfight that resulted in the death of Umpa’s mother.

The case is still pending in court.

Kindergarten Cut-off Age

Preschool, nursery or kinder all technically refer to one thing – early childhood education for children before they begin compulsory education.

Taking it in the Philippine context, the term used entirely depends on the educational institution, especially if it’s a private school. But our Department of Education (DepEd) refers to Kinder as the level before Grade 1. In fact, the K in K-12 refers to Kinder, while 12 means Grade 1 to 12.

DepEd requires children to reach 5 years of age before acceptance to the Kinder level. Furthermore, based on the DepEd Order 47, s.

2016, Omnibus Policy on Kindergarten, the agency requires kids to be 5 by August 31st of the school year they will enroll in.

This basically means that your child’s 5th birthday should fall before the said date for him to be admitted as a Kinder student.

Private schools can be more lenient with this age requirement, with some accepting even kids whose 5th birthdays fall after August

31st. But do note that even if your child starts Kinder early, there is no guarantee that he will be admitted to Grade 1 in a big school. The DepEd requirement for Grade 1 admission is for children to reach 6 years of age or more by the August 31st of the school year they will enroll in. It must also be noted that schools and the DepEd are now more strict in terms of the child’s age, as K-12 considers the child’s readiness, social and emotional development aside from mental capacity.

It’s all about vulgarity, stupid!

GOOD MANNERS REQUIRE TIME, AND NOTHING IS MORE VULGAR THAN HASTE --RALPH WALDO EMERSON

HASTE and rashness are synonymous to being negative and destructive.

They break relationships, they wreck credibility. Unreasonable haste leads directly to the road of error and comes with a load of pitfalls.

Such classic case was the irresponsible posting on social media of a supposed sex video of APO Hiking Society lead singer Jim Paredes, a self righteous critic of DU30.

After a strong, self-denial, Paredes eventually made a complete turnaround by admitting he was the actor seen on that sex act recorded on video.

Sadly and awfully disgusting, it runs aground against his battle of morality in governance under the Duterte administration.

Deliberate or not, the

use of that sex video starring Paredes was a fine example of ‘haste makes waste‘ kind of social media blunder.

This early, Paredes’ apology on social media received mixed reactions from netizens. Of course, first to open up in defense of Paredes on the recent gaffe was Leah Navarro, another self-proclaimed critic of Duterte.

But for others, it was just a plain and simple bad karma for Paredes, a campus idol in the 70s. And to say it bluntly, it was all about vulgarity, period.

And so, what is fake in these exciting times? The term fake news has become widely used – and too wildly as well because it is being abused to the hilt.

But understandably, there is a lingering confusion when some news is

only a bit fake, or fake for an arguably legit or illegitimate reason.

Can we still make a useful definition of fake news? And should we even be worried about it at all?

This could be easily traced down on being impulsive and headstrong.

In fact, fake news is a by-product of haste and therefore if haste is at all to be made, it should be made slowly but surely.

In haste, one fails to consider all the sides to the problem, issue or concern.

As a Russian proverb goes: hurry is only good for catching flies.

Rapidity therefore does not necessarily lead to something good, or something worth keeping.

Haste interferes with peace of mind. It may be a symptom of a mad man’s

THINK a minute.

One day in 1894, Guglielmo returned to his room on the third floor of his parents’ house.

He had spent several months of reading books and filling notebooks with detailed drawings and diagrams.

Now it was time to work at bringing those drawings from paper into practical inventions to use in real life.

He got up early every morning and worked all day until late at night, to the point that his mother began to seriously worry about his health.

Guglielmo pushed a button which rang a bell down on the first floor. His mother was amazed and proud of her son. But his father was not! He saw no value or use in being able to send a signal over such a short distance. So Guglielmo kept on working.

Little by little he made changes in his invention to send a signal from one hill to the next, and then beyond the hill. Eventually,

through his perspiration and perseverance, his invention was perfected.

Guglielmo Marconi became famous as the inventor of wireless telegraphy, which started the technology for the invention of radio. Marconi not only received the Nobel Prize in physics, but also a position in the Italian senate and many honorary degrees.

Someone said: “The way to get to the top is to get off your bottom.” That’s why “You gotta work it to win it.”

160-KM trail kicks off annual tribute for Bataan Death March heroes and survivors

FORMER US Navy SEALs together with hundreds of our country’s armed forces, police and civilian volunteers, paid tribute to our World War II heroes in a 160 kilometers ‘Freedom Trail’ from KM Zero in Mariveles, Bataan to Capas, Tarlac.

Freedom Trail is an annual event organized by the Philippine Veterans Bank (PVB), in partnership with the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO), and the Provincial Government of Bataan. The event honors the sacrifice and bravery of Filipino and American World War II heroes and survivors. Participants trail the 160 kilometer route that spans three provinces for 42 hours.

Veterans Bank’s Freedom Trail traces the actual route of the Bataan Death March from KM Zero Mariveles in Bataan, to San Fernando Pampanga, up to Capas in Tarlac. The Freedom Trail kicks off the 77th year commemoration of the Bataan Death March.

“Freedom Trail is our way of remembering our World War II veterans’ bravery and heroism during the war. They have sacrificed life and limb for our country’s freedom.

Let the Freedom Trail be a constant reminder for our next generations,” said Mike Villa-Real, Head of Veterans Bank’s Marketing Communications Division.

The Death March, considered as one of the darkest days in Philippine History, is the forcible transfer of 60,000-80,000 Filipino and American prisoners of war (POW) from Saysain Point, Bagac, Bataan and Mariveles to Camp O’Donnell, Capas, Tarlac. The prisoners were loaded onto box cars in San Fernando, Pampanga. The transfer began on April 9, 1942 and left thousands dead and seriously wounded after enduring torture under the hands of the Japanese Imperial Army.

The Death March route stretches from Mariveles in Bataan to Capas, Tarlac via San Fernando, Pampanga.

The total distance covered was from 96 to 112 kms.

This year’s commemoration activities also includes “Ride for Valor,” a competitive bike tour to be held on March 10 from Kilometer Zero in Bataan to Capas, Tarlac; and the Bataan Freedom Run that will be held on April 14, 2019. Bike and running enthusiasts are invited to register for the events.

Proceeds from the activities will be used for the restoration and maintenance of historical markers along the route of the Bataan Death March.

Asian media groups told to adopt new technology

BOAO, Hainan Province -Media groups in Asia are urged to innovate as the new media age has started, China’s State Council Information Office Vice Minister Guo Weimin said Friday.

During the Asia Media Cooperation Conference as part of the Boao Forum Asia (BFA) Annual Conference 2019, Guo said the media industry in the region shall embrace the omnimedia era by advancing innovation through adopting new technology.

Omnimedia is the convergence of various channels in the media industry, shifting from single platform to multiplatform –print, television, radio broadcasting, and internet.

“Innovation is the driving force for social development, and media is an important key for this change. Innovation is the key to media development… We need to take advantage of the advancement of new technology, so the latest technology can be applied in media development,” Guo said.

IPC, TESDA Hold Graduation Ceremonies for 15th Batch of Auto Mechanic Training Program in Tacloban City ISUZU Philippines Corporation, in pursuit of its corporate social responsibility objective of uplifting the lives of the youth through free training and education, held the graduation ceremonies of the 15th batch of the IsuzuTESDA Auto Mechanic Training Program at the TESDA (Technical Education and Skills Development Authority) Region 8 Training Center Compound in Barangay Abucay, Tacloban City, Leyte province.

On the same occasion, IPC and TESDA conducted the recognition ceremony for the 16th and 17th batches of the Program.

Started in November 2008 conceptualized by Isuzu Motors Limited (IML), the vocational training program has seen IML, IPC, and TESDA collaborating to impact the lives of a total of 248 disadvantaged youth.

IML supports the ISUZUTESDA Auto Mechanic Training Center Project by providing funds needed for the project operation while IPC hasprovided technical guidance to both students and trainers.On the other hand, TESDA provides the training center, equipped with all the needed equipment, to implement the training programs up to National Certificate (NC) Levels III and IV. After the trainees’ graduation, both entities actively endorse these graduates

to industry firms (preferably within the IPC network) that need highly skilled mechanics for permanent jobs.

The 15th batch had a total of 18 graduates come up on stage to receive their certificates.

The moment these youngsters receive their certificates have often been a highly emotional experience, as their parents tearfully embrace their sons or daughters, knowing that their lives have most likely turned for the better from then on.

This opening up of opportunities was reflected in the inspiring message of IML Senior Counselor Yoshinori IDA when he addressed the

15th batch of graduates and Batch 16 and 17 trainees: “Since you left home and your parents two years ago, you have worked diligently so much so that all of you have successfully passed the NCIV. Your father, mother, teachers and everyone involved are all delighted with your achievements. Tomorrow, you will set off on a new journey after two years of hard work and turn your dream into a reality.

You will be pursuing different career paths but keep a close-knit relationship with your fellow graduates and march forward.”

in the local and global automotive arena. “ 32 of them have chosen to work overseas and the number is increasing year by year.

In October 2018, two of the graduates joined a dealership in Tokyo, Japan and one graduate currently works for Isuzu.

Banana exporters, growers suffer losses due to fusarium wilt DAVAO CITY -- The Cavendish banana exporters and growers in Mindanao have voiced concerns over rising production losses as fusarium wilt disease continues to affect the industry, add to that the adverse impact of changing weather conditions.

Gladys Garcia, managing director of Mindanao Banana Farmers Exporters Association (MBFEA), said a large area of Cavendish banana farms have already been abandoned particularly in Sto. Tomas, Kapalong, Asuncion, Panabo in Davao del Norte and Calinan, Davao City, due to spread of fusarium wilt.

Aside from the disease, Garcia said growers are also affected by the dry season and the recent heavy rains.

“We need water but we were also affected by excessive water,” Garcia said during Monday’s Kapehan sa Dabaw at SM Davao Annex.

She said around 20,000 to 25,000 hectares are still active Cavendish bananas production areas. The adverse factors, she said, has led to declining output and exporters risk of not meeting the demand of their market abroad.

State of the City Address: Panabo to see major changes in the urban landscape

IMPROVING road connectivity and the city’s urban landscape is on top of the development direction of the city government under the administration of Mayor Engr. James G. Gamao.

During his 4th State of the City Address on March 27, Gamao promised major changes in the city’s urban landscape as he revealed the various infrastructure projects in place this year to attain his development agenda.

It includes the construction of drainage canals, riprapping of creeks, improvement of riverbanks, rehabilitation of old cracked roads, and road widening of city and national roads.

The city also invested in asphalt batching plant and paving equipment, which will make the expeditious paving of city and barangay roads possible.

DAVAO CITY -- Expecting a large volume of vacationers this summer season, Cathay Dragon has added two more flights to service Davao-Hong Kong routes starting on Tuesday, April 4.

Camille Rosales, Cathay local sales executive, said the additional two flights will only be good until the end of the season on May 4.

During the Kapehan sa Dabaw on Monday here, Rosales told reporters that the additional flights will accommodate more travelers between Davao and Hong Kong and onwards to other destinations.

Cathay Dragon, a Hong Kong flag carrier, currently flies the Davao-Hong Kong route at four-times-weekly since October last year. It

flies on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays with Airbus A320 aircraft.

Since then, Rosales said, the load factor has been doing well and with summer season she is expecting an increasing demand.

“Our target is really 100 percent load factor,” she added.

Davao City is the fourth destination of C athay Dragon which also operates flights to Manila, Cebu, and Clark.

Donasco said there were also standing palay crops in lower portions of Barangay Baluan that were damaged due to the lack of irrigation supplies.

“Our assessment is still ongoing for our high-value crops but there were already recorded damages so far for banana,” she said in a radio interview.

The official said these are located in upland areas that depend mainly on rain for water supplies and had not absorbed substantial moisture to sustain the standing crops.

She said that if the dry spell will continue to intensify in the coming weeks, more high-value crops will likely be affected and incur damages.

Among those being monitored are coconut and fruit plantations, especially durian and mango, she said.

Donasco said they are hoping that the Department of Agriculture (DA) in Region 12 can start this week its planned cloud seeding operations.

The city government had submitted a request to DA12 to include the city in the cloud-seeding to help ease the effects of the dry spell on the remaining standing crops.

Cloud-seeding is the process of manually spreading either dry ice or salt into the upper part of the clouds to help stimulate the precipitation process and form rain.

As intervention, the city government has been providing free vegetable seeds to the affected farmers and other concerned residents.

Since 2014, the Philippine Veterans Bank together with the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO) and Bataan Provincial Government, gather in Bataan for

various activities that encourages participation of the veterans’ descendants and families as well as civilians and the military.

The month-long activities are held along the route of the infamous Bataan Death March.

Mike Villa-Real, Head of Veterans Bank’s Marketing Communications Division, shared, “Freedom Run is part of the month long activities we do to reach out and share especially to the younger generation about our World War II veterans’ bravery and heroism during the war, particularly the Battle for Bataan. They were abandoned and yet against all odds held on and defended the country for 3 months, unlike our Southeast Asian neighbors.

That’s why their captors let them go through what is now known as the Bataan Death March.”

The Death March, considered as one of the darkest days in Philippine History, is the forcible transfer of 60,000–80,000 Filipino and American prisoners of war (POW) from Saysain Point, Bagac, Bataan and Mariveles to Camp O’Donnell, Capas, Tarlac. The prisoners were loaded onto box cars in San Fernando, Pampanga. The transfer began on April 9, 1942 and left thousands dead and seriously wounded after enduring torture under the hands of the Japanese Imperial Army.

The Death March route stretches from Mariveles in Bataan to Capas, Tarlac via San Fernando, Pampanga.

The total distance covered was from 96 to 112 kms.

This year’s commemoration activities also include Freedom Trail March, a two-day event that traces the 160 kilometers actual route of the Bataan Death March. The event aims to instill the values of Bravery, Sacrifice and Love for Country. The Freedom Trail March gathered US and Filipino military and police units who marched the entire Bataan Death March route alongside with other civilians. “Ride for Valor,” a competitive bike tour was also held in March, which started from Kilometer Zero in Bataan to Capas, Tarlac.

This is the part of the BTA and future Bangsamoro governments in the same covenant, RA 11054. But no exhortation can make the Bangsamoros succeed unless present and future governments do their part as agreed – without prodding and pleading. *** *** *** In his welcome address, BTA Chair Murad said that when the President banged the “agong” that marked a new beginning for the Bangsamoro people. The BTA is the interim government of the newly established BARMM until June 30, 2022 – building on, where feasible and practicable, on solid remains of the ARMM. “We vow to make moral governance as the foundation of peace leadership.”

To realize this, he led the BTA members in vowing for moral governance before the Qur’an.

The “new beginning” – moral governance – is the biggest challenge for the BTA. The first step is for the BTA members to plant firmly the foundation. The second is for the BTA to indoctrinate the Bangsamoros to appreciate moral governance and to rally behind the BTA. The third is for the succeeding Bangsamoro Parliament, the next and the next, to continue strengthening moral governance and uniting the Bangsamoros around it.

Was the “Welcome” more significant than the “Inaugurtion”? *** *** *** Why were the inauguration, the oath-taking of the BTA members and the turn-over of the ARMM to BARMM Interim Chief Minister not held simultaneously last February 22, most preferably at Sharif Kabunsuan Complex than in Malacañan? That would have saved time, money and efforts.

The BTA could have started its mandate on February 23 rather than on March 30, a delay of more than one month. *** *** *** When MNLF Chair Nur Misuari visited Malacañan last March 20, President Duterte apologized to his “beloved friend” for their unimplemented “agreements” on federalism. Nowhere in its report did PNA mention that the President apologized to the BTA for causing the repeated postponement of the inauguration.
