MAMBAJAO, Camiguin-The Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HnP), now touted as the ruling party led by Presidential daughter and Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte ended its campaign sortie in Camiguin yesterday.

Duterte urged the voters at the jampacked Mambajao Municipal Gym to bring a resounding victory to the coalition which she said could be vital in fulfilling the dreams and aspirations of her father President Rodrigo Duterte.

But the presidential daughter said she is leaving the decision to the electorate of whom they think could best serve the country.

While the Camiguin rally is the last among Hugpong”s provincial sorties, it could be noted that only two of the senatoriables were present; candidates Jiggy Manicad and Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa. The party offered no explanation on the absence of the majority of the senatoriables.

Newly opened Davao sports complex littered with trash after Palaro opening

DAVAO City––Several plastic bottles and other wastes were left on the bleachers of the newly-opened football stadium of the Davao City-UP Mindanao Sports Complex after the opening ceremony of the 62nd Palarong Pambansa (National Games) here on Sunday.

The stadium was filled with thousands of visitors cheering for the student athletes from the country’s 17 regions during the two-hour parade but an unpleasant sight of waste sitting on the bleachers was revealed when the crowd left.

Garbage – mostly plastic bottles, plastic bags, empty packs of junk foods, food packs, and even Palarong Pambansa flaglets – had been scattered even as trash bins were provided around the sports complex for proper waste disposal.

The City Government of Davao has an existing Ecological Solid Waste Management Ordinance, which “prohibits littering, scattering, throwing, and dumping of wastes in public places.”

The ordinance, approved on February 10, 2010 when President Rodrigo R. Duterte was still mayor of Davao City, also prohibits open burning of solid waste, non-segregation of solid waste, and open dumping and burying of solid waste in flood prone areas.

The Palarong Pambansa, the country’s the biggest local sporting event, was expected to draw a crowd of 20,000.

This was the second time that the City of Davao hosted the annual multi-sport event, the first being in 1950, or 69 years ago. In 2015, neighboring Tagum City in Davao del

“While Labor Day is supposed to be celebrated to pay fitting tribute to Filipino workforce, it has been historically marred by protest actions and public assemblies, often initiated by militant labor and cause-oriented groups,” PNP chief, Gen. Oscar Albayalde told reporters in a press briefing Monday.

He said the Directorial Staff convened for a staff conference on various matters, including security preparations for the nationwide observance of Labor Day on May 1.

Albayalde said the sizable security contingent will be fielded to ensure order and security in all places of engagement while policy of maximum tolerance will be strictly observed by police security forces.

“Consistent with national policy, the PNP will support all lawful and peaceful activities in commemoration of Labor Day, but only within the bounds the law,” he noted.

Toyota owners, celeb drivers race this weekend at the Vios Autocross Challenge T OYOTA Motor Philippines (TMP) brings back waku-doki this year with a bigger and better motorsports program, the Vios Racing Festival. Gear up for heart-racing fun as the country’s number one automotive brand starts the festival this summer with the Vios Autocross Challenge this coming April 28, 2019 (Sunday), 9:00 AM at Block 16, Mall of Asia open grounds.

Admission is free, so everyone is invited to come and support their favorite celebrity racers Gerald Anderson, Daniel Matsunaga, Chie Filomeno, Gretchen Ho, Aubrey Miles, Troy Montero, and Fabio Ide as they compete at the autocross tracks with other racers.

And in one of the Vios Racing Festival’s many twists, Toyota owners can now get the chance to be official racers at the Vios Autocross Challenge.

What exactly is the Vios Autocross Challenge?

“Toyota wants to make racing an accessible sport for the ordinary Filipino by providing an extraordinary opportunity to get themselves started, fueled by their passion for motorsports,” said Mr. Satoru Suzuki, President of TMP. The Vios Autocross Challenge is a new addition to the standard circuit racing format. It is a timed competition wherein drivers navigate through an obstacle course one at a time, aiming to finish the track within the shortest lap time possible.

This new format will be more amateurfriendly than a standard circuit race, where all participants are simultaneously racing against each other.

The adrenaline factor is retained through several mechanics which highlight driving

precision: for example, every pylon hit adds 2 seconds on top of the racer’s final lap time.

In order to promote a more inclusive racing

scene that fosters friendly competition, drivers from different backgrounds are invited: celebrities, social media influencers, car club

members, new Vios owners, motoring journalists, and now even loyal Toyota patrons.

Autocross Challenge?

The online promo on Facebook is open to all Toyota owners— regardless of model and year—that can drive a Manual Transmission vehicle. Toyota Motor Philippines will be lending out race-ready Vios units during the event day to at least 5 lucky participants with the best captioned entries.

Nothing comes from anything OUR globe and its population bear innumerable strange facts. Following many people’s opinion, this world shows mostly worried characteristics and symptoms nowadays. No wonder. Just try to consume and digest today’s headlines and news from all around the globe.

It is a world with quickly bridged distances - our Mother earth is becoming smaller and smaller.

Any tourist, even with little time and with only a small budget, can travel to other faraway cultures.

But joining them as well as different races and religious communities requires first of all, great care, tact, instinctive feelings, empathy, and logical ideas.

The stranger whom we meet for the first time during a business meet-

ing, for example, maybe an uncommon, odd and extraordinary guy. He may be someone from a foreign country, who speaks another language and whose skin is of another color. He may be a migrant, a restless hiker or the expatriate in our neighborhood.

The foreigner beside you and me can become a provocation or a challenge. Strangeness can become exoticism. Maybe, that’s why my family and I decided to move to the Philippines already in 1998.

On the other hand - going abroad can open other and even better horizons.

We must not feel as “a stranger in paradise”. By the way, I never did since touring around the globe many times. On the other hand, I am not putting my country of birth into the

trash. Heaven forbid, no!

However, a migrant bears a juxtaposition of optimism (even calculated optimism!), confused feelings, nostalgia, and homesickness. Yes guys, during the first years of my expat’s life in the Philippines, the round trip ticket was always in my mind, because no one among us can escape his native roots.

But, I am really a lucky guy. I experienced an amazing tolerance in the Philippines. A real practicing tolerance. I am blessed living in and with a wonderful Philippine family.

If you check my Facebook accounts, you might believe me. Already, during my first business meetings, I also met supportive, forbearing and broad minded people.

Recognizing royalty

THINK a minute.

Successful country singer Lonzo Green was visiting his relatives. His teenage nephew, Jim, and all his friends gathered in Jim’s house to meet his famous uncle. But there was one quiet 15-year-old boy whom Jim’s parents would not allow to come inside their house. Simply because this kid was poor, they treated him as an inferior, lowerclass person, even calling him “white trash.”

When Jim told Uncle Lonzo that this boy outside had a guitar but did not know how to tune it, Lonzo gladly offered to show the boy how. Since he was not allowed inside the house, they arranged to meet outside by the street.

It was obvious to Lonzo that this teenage boy was embarrassed and felt out of place in this upper class neighborhood. The boy’s guitar was old, cheap, and

DAVAO City--Writing from Kiev in the Ukraine, Simon Shuster (whose article for Time magazine appeared in the 8 April 2019 issue) wrote about the current Presidential elections in that country. Referring to the fact that the frontrunner among those running for the office is the country’s famous comedian – Volodymyr Zelensky – Shuster posits: “No other politician (except perhaps the former realityTV star who occupies the Oval Office) has provided a truer test of the theory that politics in our age is just a form of show business.”

Perhaps we need to

hung around his neck with just a piece of string. After Lonzo showed the shy teenager how to tune his guitar, he offered to teach him some songs. The boy was so surprised and happy that Lonzo would spend two whole hours playing and singing with him, he actually started feeling confident in his own ability to play and sing.

Lonzo never met that boy again, at least not face to face. For that same boy who was not allowed to come inside the house, became the King of Rock n’ Roll: Elvis Presley.

There is a similar true story about another king who was not allowed to come inside people’s homes and hearts. In fact, He is the King of all kings. Yet even though He is the Maker of the universe, He chose 2,000 years ago to humiliate Himself by becoming a human being born into a

poor, working-class family.

Most people did not even recognize Him. In fact, not only was He rejected by His own people then, but by most of us today.

Remember, Jesus never said He was only a good man, teacher, or prophet.

He absolutely claimed that He is God Himself.

As everyone knows, Estrada won but was booted out of office only to return later as Mayor of Manila. Many believe that Poe should have won but his camp did not have the efficient machinery that Macapagal-Arroyo was able to set up which guaranteed her winning that hotly con-

This list is getting longer every time there is an election. Such family dynasties include those of the Villars, Binays, Cayetanos, Pimentels, and so many others.

There also seems to be a connection between showbiz and the dramas involving political dynasties. Quite a few of the more popular teleseryes show the melodramatic incidents in the life of political families with its twists and turns.

What is happening to the Binay family in terms of who the patriarch will support among siblings running for the same office has the same dramatic content as teleseryes. Same with the continuing melodrama involving the Estrada/Ejercito siblings, which tangentially

The earlier conflict between Congressmen Alvarez and Floriendo which erupted in Congress, provoked by the catfight between their mistresses, was pure showbiz. This dramatic confrontation ended with the latter’s fall from grace as Speaker of the House.

But nothing beats the Dutertes in the contemporary political landscape.

Here is a political dynasty whose members act in a way that not even the most imaginative scriptwriter could fictionalize. All three children are now running for public offices, including the youngest son who at one time showed no interest at all in engaging in politics.

The daughter has turned into a major political force and has been tagged as the father’s successor in Malacanang. The middle child – despite the alleged link to drugs – is running unopposed and will soon be in Congress. There is even an in-law that is also getting into local politics.

So what brings about this phenomenon of “politics being a form of show business?” One cannot deny that one factor why a candidate gets elected is name recall. And celebrities have an edge over those whose faces do not appear on any screen – whether that of TVs, cinemas, social media’s gadgets and even tarpaulins advertising products. Mass media has always been an

instrument to tap if a candidate wants exposure; the advent of social media has made that need even more urgent. Which is why politicians and their parties have employed trolls for purposes of manipulating facts or popularizing fake news.

In the post-modern era, segments of our population can easily be mesmerized by those they idolize as media’s gaze is on them.

There seems to be a need to identify with those who have power which no longer demands strong adherence to moral values such as integrity, honesty and ethical behavior in society. Most of us no longer demand of our politicians the high standards of the likes of the Claro Rectos, Jose Dioknos and Lorenzo Tanadas. Many of us do not even care if there are quality debates among the candidates where they are able to articulate their visions for the betterment of this country and its people.

Sad to say, that the “ka-

babawan” that exemplifies showbiz (for we have to admit that there are but a few exceptions to films/ TV shows that have depth) makes our politics also shallow. And where showbiz has nothing substantial to contribute to a radical transformation of the ills of Philippine society then it follows there is little hope we can place on the kind of politics we have in our country today.

Gov’t revives Food Terminal to support agri producers

MANILA -- The governmentowned Food Terminal Incorporated (FTI) gets a total refurbishment in a bid to provide necessary aid to Filipino agricultural producers.

“This event marks the 50th year of the company and a major 360 degrees turn on its current operations,” FTI president Ariel Buenaventura said in his gratuity speech on Friday night.

FTI, which will commemorate its 50th year anniversary on April 30, already

started with a pre-celebration for its revival from being almost shut down following its divestment in 2012.

Over the years, the services provided by FTI continued to dwindle with the shutdown of its various postharvest services. This led to its original mandate and purpose not being met thus resulting in the government’s plan to close down the company.

“We were almost closed, almost shut but light was seen at the end of the tunnel

with President Rodrigo Roa Duterte’s mission to strengthen support to the agricultural sector,” Buenaventura added in an interview at the sidelines of the event.

FTI provides accessible and modern facilities for agricultural producers to link with consumer and promote price stability.

Currently, the agency provides services for the Department of Trade Industry, Dizon Farms, Bank of the Philippine Islands, Eikobodugo, among others.

It also functions as an estate leasing company that caters to both Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) and non-PEZA properties.

The renewal of the corporate life entails the revival of the original mandate. The five-year roadmap for FTI was created late 2018 with the theme aligned with the 2040 Philippine Development Plan of the government.

Collaborative learning is more elaborate than group work activity. Collaborative learning can be incorporated into your classroom management system. If you train your students to work effectively in groups, the results can be a very productive and fun learning environment.

One of my first experiments with collaborative learning was to let my students work in groups of their own choosing. Of course, they chose to work with their friends and were not very productive. I used this to my advantage when I later assigned group partners, careful to avoid having close friends in the same group.

Each school year I wait until October before assigning groups. This gives me a chance to get to know my students and learn about their social and academic abilities. After about 6 weeks of teacher-directed lessons, students welcome the idea of group work. I set aside an entire period for our first group work experience. I assign four partners to a group (chosen ahead of time). The partners are chosen mainly by ability so that each group will have one top-level, two middle-level and one struggling student in each group. I also try to account for personality differences. Students may choose any name for their group that is appropriate for a classroom.

The first group work assignment is usually a simple and easy one. This gives students a chance to adjust to their partners and to choose a group name. Students love to choose group names because it is cool and because it gives them decision-making power.

Ideally, all groups should choose a name by the end of the class period. One member of each group places the name of the group and the names of its members on an index card for me.

I then create a handout that lists the name of each group and its members in alphabetical order. This handout is distributed to the class, along with a list of collaborative learning rules.

Each day I choose a different group facilitator.

For example, if the facilitator is member 1, then the student whose last name is alphabetically first is the facilitator for each group.

It is a good idea to change group partners during the school year, otherwise tempers might flare. I assign new group partners each marking period. My students look forward to this since they get to choose new group names.

Collaborative learning should not be used haphazardly. However, when used with a plan, it can offer many educational benefits.

Most of all, it is just plain fun.

In January this year, the government held a national TODA Summit in Pasay City to listen to the concern of the tricycle operators and drivers in the country.

“Inimbitahan rin po yung mga presidente ng TODA doon po sa Malacanang at naiparating ni Presidente Ace kay Pangulong Duterte yung mga hinaing po ng TODA at yung mga problema ninyo,” Go added.

“Sa katauhan ni Kuya Bong Go, may magtutulay na ng hinaing ng mga TODA sa Presidente,” said Sevilla for his part, as he also recalled how Go spearheaded the

Sevilla noted that during their meeting with President Duterte, arranged by Go, he requested fuel subsidy for tricycle drivers similar to that enjoyed by jeepney drivers. He said this would soon be realized through the help of the private sector.

For his part, Go assured the TODA that they can always count on his help if they have any concerns or problems that they want to bring to the attention of President Rodrigo Duterte.

A program of the Duterte administration based on Go’s idea, the Malasakit Center makes it easier and faster for poor patients to avail of medical and financial assistance by bringing together in one room all concerned agencies such as DOH, DSWD, PCSO, and Philhealth.

Sara said the city’s passion for sports has “inspired us to run the extra mile in preparations to give all of you an indelible, incredible experience in this annual multi-sport event.”

Duterte vows to continue support for sports programs

DAVAO City--President Rodrigo Duterte on Sunday assured the country’s young athletes of government’s continued support to the sports programs to help them hone their potentials.

In his speech during the opening of the 62nd Palarong Pambansa (National Games) at the Davao City-UP Mindanao Sports Complex on Sunday, Duterte recognized the importance of sports as an effective avenue “to instill among the youth essential characteristics for nation-building such as discipline, teamwork, and perseverance.”

Binibining Pilipinas 2019 candidates turn ‘Pet Pals’ for a day

FTER bonding with students with autism during the World Autism Awareness Day last April 2, the Binibining Pilipinas 2019 contestants spent time with pets going through rehabilitation at the Philippine Animal Welfare Society

(PAWS) in Quezon City.

Reinforcing the campaign “Beyond Beauty,” the Binibining Pilipinas 2019 candidates attended another charity activity last Friday, April 26.

After bonding with students with autism during the World Autism Awareness Day last April 2, the contestants spent time with pets going through rehabilitation at the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) in Quezon City.

The activity was initiated by Araneta Center’s Pet Pals program in partnership with Binibining Pilipinas Charities Inc. The Pet Pals initiative, which started last year, welcomes pet owners and their pets to the premier live-workplay destination in the metro. The candidates donated 140 kilos of cat food to PAWS and bonded with the dogs and cats under the institution’s care.

They also talked about ways to take care of pets especially during summer.

Night on June 9, they have also been actively personifying the Beyond Beauty slogan by attending charity events and workshops. Aside from their participation in Big Dome Lights Blue for World Autism Awareness Day and their visit at PAWS, the candidates are also scheduled to attend an activity that promotes taking care of the environment and an art appreciation workshop.

“We want the candidates to embody beauty that’s more than just physical. We want them to live the essence of a woman that is empowered, sure of herself, fearless, courageous and at the same time, loving and caring,” psychoneurologist Dr. Lia Bernardo, who facilitated their “Empowerment is Authenticity” workshop last April 11. This was the first time that all 40 candidates participated in the workshop, which in previous years was offered only to the winners of the pageant.

This is just one of the changes in this year’s Binibining Pilipinas pageant under the direction of its chair Mrs. Stella Marquez Araneta.
