NorMin’s economy expands by 7% in 2019

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- The economy of Northern Mindanao expanded by 7.0 percent in 2018 due to the accelerated growths of the services and industry sectors.

Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) Region X Officer-in-Charge Janith Aves said in a news conference that services posted an accelerated growth of 8.9 percent in 2018. Industry likewise grew by 8.8 percent.

Services account for 44.1 percent of the regional economy while industry shares 35.6 percent.

Aves said the robust performance of the services sector was propelled by the double-digit growth of 12.88 percent of the Transportation, Storage and Commu-

nication sub-sector. Public Administration and Defense also expanded by 12.6 percent while Other Services grew at a faster rate of 8.9 percent.

The growth of the industry sector, on the other hand, was fueled by the Construction sub-sector which grew by 16.3 percent. Mining and Quarrying also expanded at a faster rate of 14.6 percent while manufacturing sped up to 6.6 percent.

Mylah Faye Aurora Cariño, National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Region X director, said the dominance of the services and industry sectors is a testament that Northern Mindanao has gained foothold as an industrial core and trade center in

the country.

She cited the increases in air and sea cargoes, registered motor vehicles, and the number of cell sites and internet subscribers as indicators supporting the growth of the Transportation, Storage and Communication sub-sector.

“The double-digit increase in airline passengers also gave domestic tourism a boost as a result of new and additional air routes catered

by Laguindingan, Ozamiz, and Camiguin airports,” she further said.

Camiguin LGUs prep for 2019 SGLG implementation CAMIGUIN -- As part of the core values of the department in providing technical assistance to the local government units (LGUs), the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Camiguin Provincial Office conducted a one-day SGLG Orientation April 2 at Clubhouse, Villa Paraiso Resort and Apartelle.

The assessment context criteria were discussed thoroughly by select Local Government Operations Officers (LGOOs) who attended the national and regional roll-out to ensure readiness of the LGUs in the upcoming onsite regional validation.

DILG Provincial Director Rhona G. Pedraza-Abadilla said passing the seal rests upon the shoulders of the local government heads as the implementers in their respective service delivery areas who will take the lead in the successful operation of LGUs. Abadilla said all five municipalities and the province will hurdle this year’s assessment.

‘Kathanor’ yields exact number of true Marawi IDPs ILIGAN CITY -- The Task Force B angon Marawi (TFBM) releases today the exact number of legitimate Marawi siege victims.

Based on TFBM’s new masterlist from Kathanor, a biometrics-based profiling of internally displaced persons (IDPs) here, there are only 39,000 families displaced after the ISISlinked Maute terrorist group attacked the Islamic city on May 23, 2017. Kathanor is a Maranao term for organization.

“From 78,000 families, we are now down to 36,000, as of today. Meaning to say, the 78,000 families are a bloated figure. Man knifes woman 3 times for calling him ‘old maniac’

ILIGAN City––Police arrested a sexagenarian after he stabbed a 45-year-old woman three times last April 25 in Purok 22, Barangay Dalipuga, this city.

Police identified the victim as Analyn Burac Paduala while the suspect

is a 60-year-old Recarter Pelone Elew, known in the neighborhood as “Ante.”

Police Master Sergeant Mardel Dayday, an investigator of Police Station 3 here, said Paduala has been provoking the suspect by shouting at him “old maniac.”

Previously, the suspect

said, they met in the barangay because the victim whipped his wife with a chain that made the latter collapsed.

“I was not able to control myself because she has been provoking me for many times, I just kept my silence.

But I threatened her before I’m gonna kill her if I can’t

control myself,” the suspect said.

But the victim said, she was with a friend passing at the suspect’s house when the couple was having a quarrel.

Medical doctor linked to Reds fears for his life

ILIGAN City––A medical doctor started to fear for his life and security after leaflets tagging him as a recruiter, supporter and protector of the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army (CPP-NPA) were posted at the gate of their house by unidentified persons.

Dr. Charles Marquez, 39, a resident of Barangay Tubod, said his mother first discovered the three leaflets posted outside the gate of their house, around 5 a.m. last April 25.

Marquez is active in

civil-military operations and medical missions of the Philippine Army.

Right or wrong is my country IN the developing countries, infrastructure development is really low. It is due to the low budget too. For that reason, they tend to get foreign loan. But, the paying back is always with high interest rate: a crucial problem. It is like a dilemma.

America and India—for example— have tried hard to keep themselves not to get a huge offshore loan.

This is the phenomenon nowadays.

World nation interaction can be either economic or cultural interactions. In that, the world is borderless.

This creates two poles. One is the traditional values and the other is modernization.

Developing countries have been experiencing the same thing. We have many ancestral values. These values are

still valid. Specifically, the values of life and culture.

The most common, in the transitional period, is a pseudo colonization. This type is often related to culture, economy, and ideology. Culture can be related to the values of the whole nation. They are still valid.

Many people still adhere to ancestral values. These values can be in the form of culture. The strongest value is related to religious values. Religion in majority is held by the community.

The philosophy is very closely related to national values. A constitutional value is the strong value because it is related to a nation. We must be nationalist— not chauvinism. By nationalists, we mean we must always defend our

country: right or wrong.

Lord Palmerton in the 19th century shouted about this. Right or wrong is my country. The state must always be defended. A long time ago, colonization was done by deploying the land: territory. Today, colonization can be either in the form of economy or ideology.

Economy colonization is more difficult to see.

But, it can be predicted.

All the resources are in our own country, but cultivated and manipulated by a small number of people. Natural resources are derived from such as the land, water, and even air.

All above include the state budget allocation. The allocation starts from the profit sharing. This profit sharing should be trans-

Unfortunately, there is always an information asymmetry. The condition where, the policy makers have got more information. On the contrary, public have less information.

Only do all the big corporations and oligarchies get more benefits. The people or public get nothing more than their staple food: a meager meal. This leads to a wider gap among the citizens in terms of the capital—huge wealth and properties. Yet, the majority live under the See COUNTRY, page 11

WE live in rapidly changing times, thanks to the technological wonders of internet and social media.

As fast as we can click and send, we can broadcast messages to friends, relatives and to just about anybody, anywhere in the world. This despite the fact that Philippines remains the slowest and most expensive – in terms of connectivity – in this part of the world.

Then US presidential candidate Barack Obama was among the first world leaders to realize the vast potential of social media as a platform for broadcasting campaign messages. And Obama won against a less tech savvy opponent by quite a margin.

According to Twitter, Obama was for a long time the record holder of most number of Twitter followers (47 million plus) until he

was overtaken by US TV personality Ellen Degeneris.

Following the Obama model, then candidate/now President Donald Trump likewise tweets daily, earning himself the sobriquet “Commander-in-Tweet”.

Trump has a reported following of 26.9 million Most observers, however, find disconcerting Trump’s brand of twiplomacy.

The Vatican is not to be outdone. Retired Pope Benedict XVI became the very first Pope to use Twitter. Pope Francis I, a relative late-comer, is catching up fast with 14.1 million followers and counting.

Former President Benigno Aquino III had a reported 3.4 million followers.

President Rody Duterte might not be into it personally. But his staff certainly realize the value of social

media in the presidential communication program.

Foreign Secretary Teddy Boy Locsin is quite active in Twitter.

In homes, schools, communities, and just about any place where one has access to a computer, an iPod, or a smart phone, every Juan and Maria of practically all ages are sending and receiving messages via Facebook, twitter, instagram, viber and what have you.

The message is unmistakable. Social media is a very powerful tool for communication and is with us to stay.

And here is where Uncle Ben’s advice to Spider-Man should always be top-ofmind: With great power comes great responsibility.

This message has been re-echoed by Pope Francis.

While acknowledging that “the internet, text messages,

social networks and chats are ‘a gift from God” as they can be “fully human forms of communication” the Pontiff cautions that we must “use wisely the means at our disposal”.

The papal caveat arises from the very nature of the technology available.

Messages - true or not have the potential of going viral in minutes, if not in seconds.

“The speed with which information is communicated exceeds our capacity for reflection and judgment, and this does not make for more balanced and proper forms of expression, ” Pope Francis said.

A policeman stated: “From the violence and destruction of property by kids today, you would think they have no fathers.” Late one night a young man was involved in a crime, and his unhappy father came to the police station about his car being held as evidence. The shocked policeman said to the father: “You’re worried about your CAR? How about your SON?” But the father just shrugged his shoulders and said: “Just close my car windows in case it rains.”

Fortunately, other sons are blessed with a mature, good father who takes the time to love and teach his son well—like the man who testified: “The biggest influence in my life was my

father. He spent a lot of time teaching me how to be an honest, good man.

When I was a boy, every evening my dad spent an hour with my brother and me teaching us, including reading something from the newspaper and then explaining it. This hour with my dad every evening lasted until I became an adult.

It is all the more amazing since my father had only an eighth-grade education!”

A father can even help his son find his career by taking the time to help his son discover and develop his own natural abilities. Mickey Mantle, one of the greatest professional baseball players ever, was deeply influenced by his father. Mantle wrote: “When I was just five-years-

old, Dad began to teach me all my baseball skills… Every day after work he spent several hours playing with me. And when I hit the ball over the house, he and my grandfather counted it as a homerun. But Dad did more than teach me baseball—he taught me confidence. When I was just 15, he let me play with him and the other men on the local baseball team.”

He was told by his mother to just keep it silent for security’s sake, but he decided to share it to this paper for the public to know if something bad will happen to him.

Two weeks ago, his name was also included in a leaflet circulated in Bukidnon together with the names of personalities previously tagged as members and supporters of the CPP-NPA. A friend, who is a worker of a non-government organization, informed him about the leaflet.

“I am afraid and worried that I’ll suffer the same fate with the others who were being arrested without an arrest warrant or even some were shot dead,” Marquez said.

He, howevr, admitted he is an activist and a former member of Bayan Muna but he is not a member of the CPP-NPA and he is unarmed.

“I did not deny that I am a former member of Bayan Muna and I am proud to admit that I am an activist.

But I am not a member of the ‘underground movement’,” Marquez said.

“I may have the same ideology with them, but it doesn’t always follow that I am their supporter or member, in the same way that I am active in the civil-military operations and medical missions of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, but I am not a soldier,” he explained.

Marquez is presently a medical officer of Cagayan de Oro City’s Health Insurance Office.

Prior to this, he was a Doctor to the Barrio (DTTB) of the Department of Health for two years, serving as a municipal rural health officer of the municipality of Maigo, Lanao del Norte.

From 2014 to 2016, he was a medical officer of Cagayan de Oro City’s Health Office.

He has also served in the city hospitals in Iligan and Cagayan de Oro. Marquez is a known EXTRA JUDICIAL SETTLEMENT

Agri losses from El Niño reach P7.96-B

MANILA -- The Department of Agriculture (DA) on Friday estimated at PHP7.96 billion the damages and losses caused by the El Niño phenomenon or the prolonged dry spell.

During the launch of Pilipinas Agila Tires in Ortigas, Pasig City, Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel “Manny” Piñol said the El Niño has damaged 277,890 hectares of farmlands planted with an estimated 268,656 metric tons (MT) of crops, mostly rice and corn, affecting 247,610 farmers and fisherfolks.

For rice alone, the DA recorded PHP4.04 billion in losses, with the weather phenomenon affecting 140,387 farmers and 144,202 hectares of farms, which could have yielded 191,761 MT, or 0.96 percent of the target annual production of the crop.

Damages to corn, on the other hand, were valued at PHP3.89 billion, with the El Niño affecting 105,937 farmers and 133,007 hectares of farms. Volume loss was placed at 254,766 MT, or 2.95 percent of the annual production target.

THE BSP published today the 70th issue of the quarterly BSP Inflation Report covering the period JanuaryMarch 2019. The BSP Inflation Report is published as part of the BSP’s efforts to improve the transparency of monetary policy under inflation targeting and to convey to the public the overall thinking and analysis behind the Monetary Board’s decisions on monetary policy.

The following are the highlights of the Q1 2019 BSP Inflation Report: • Headline inflation eases in Q1 as food supply conditions improve. Yearon-year headline inflation slowed down to 3.8 percent in Q1 2019 from 5.9 percent in Q4 2018. The headline inflation for Q1 2019 is within the National Government’s (NG) target range of 3.0 percent ± 1.0 percentage point for the year. The lower inflation during the quarter mainly reflected the significant deceleration in food inflation amid improved supply conditions.

Similarly, core inflation declined to 3.9 percent in Q1 2019 from 4.9 percent in the previous quarter. The three alternative measures of core inflation computed by the BSP were likewise lower in Q1 2019.

• Moreover, inflation expectations of private sector economists for March 2019 showed that mean inflation forecasts for 2019 and 2020 were lower relative to the results in December 2018.

Analysts noted that possible

downside risks to inflation include the implementation of the rice tariffication law and lower global crude oil prices. On the other hand, the key upside risks to inflation were seen to emanate from adverse weather conditions such as El Niño; volatile global oil prices and foreign exchange market; and higher electricity rates.

• Domestic economy continues to expand. Real gross domestic product (GDP) expanded by 6.3 percent (revised) in Q4 2018, bringing full-year growth to 6.2 percent. While GDP growth in 2018 is lower than the revised GDP growth target of the NG at 6.5 percent to 6.9 percent for the year, the Q4 GDP growth was higher than the quarter-ago rate of 6.0 percent.

The expansion in real GDP was supported by sustained double-digit growth in government spending and firm household spending. On the production side, growth was driven by the industry and services sectors, particularly the construction and retail trade and related services.

• Moreover, high-frequency real sector indicators continued to point to solid economic growth prospects in the near term. The composite Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) has remained above the 50-point expansion threshold. In addition, business and household sentiment has been more upbeat over the prospects of the economy in the next quarter and the year ahead.

Meanwhile, energy sales have continued to grow, while vehicle sales contracted during the quarter.

Gov’t agencies urged not to use unlicensed software

MANILA -- The Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) on Friday urged government agencies to use licensed software to prevent copyright infringement in the country.

“I see the need for the Intellectual Property Office to meet with relevant government agencies and departments to be able to discuss how to address this issue and be able to solve this,” IPOPHL Director General

Josephine Santiago said in an interview with reporters on the sidelines of the 2019 Intellectual Property Convergence forum in Makati City.

Santiago was reacting to the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) statement, urging the Philippines to implement effective policies to ensure that government agencies do not use unlicensed software.

She said government agencies must allocate a

budget for the procurement of licensed software that may be used by their offices, noting that the use of unlicensed software may compromise the security of data being handled by the government.

“It is very risky especially

when it is government having all the information that we have. The security is at the lowest; so you can say that IPOPHL really would like to promote the use of licensed software by all sectors of society,” Santiago said.

Be it ordained by the Sangguniang Panlungsod in its session assembled, that:

SECTION 1. Section 2 of City Ordinance No. 17-6634, entitled; “An Ordinance Amending Section 1 Of City Ordinance No. 04-4524 Otherwise Known As “An Ordinance Amending Section 1 (A) Of City Ordinance No. 03-4297; Otherwise Known As “An Ordinance Adopting And Approving The New Rates And Charges For The Iligan City Jeepney – Bus Terminals” By Increasing The Terminal Fees On The Use By Passenger Utility Vehicles (Puvs) Of The East (Formerly Ibjt Northbound) And West (Formerly lbjt Southbound) Integrated Bus And Jeepney Terminals” is AMENDED as the same is hereby AMENDED to read as follows: “SECTION 2. Impounding – Apprehended that has NO FRANCHISE will be impounded and the City Government of Iligan may take in charge, remove and keep in its custody under the direction of the Iligan City Traffic and Parking Management Office (ICTPMO) and be released only upon the settlement of the charges.

RESOLUTION NO. 18-720 WHEREAS, presented to the body for deliberation was the proposal to amend Section 2 of City Ordinance No. 17-6634, entitled; “An Ordinance Amending Section 1 Of City Ordinance No. 04-4524 Otherwise Known As “An Ordinance Amending Section 1 (A) Of City Ordinance No. 03-4297; Otherwise Known As “An Ordinance Adopting And Approving The New Rates And Charges For The Iligan City - Bus Terminals” By Increasing The Terminal Fees On The Use By Passenger Utility Vehicles (PUVs) Of The East (Formerly IBJT Northbound) And West (Formerly IBJT Southbound) Integrated Bus And Jeepney Terminals”;

WHEREAS, Section 2 of said ordinance states: “Section 2. Impounding - Apprehended vehicles that has NO FRANCHISE will be impounded and the City Government of Iligan may take in charge, remove and keep in its custody under the direction of the Iligan City Traffic and Parking Management Office (ICTPMO) and will be released only upon the settlement of the charges and presentation of APPROVED FRANCHISE. All impounded vehicles still unclaimed for a period of Six (6) months shall be in favor to the Local Government Unit (LGU) and may auction the confiscated vehicles subject to existing laws, rules and regulations”

WHEREAS, when the Ordinance took effect, city authorities sprang into action and implemented it. When several violators were appended due to the intensive operations of the traffic authorities of the city, it was found out that the apprehended vehicles do not have approved franchise or Certificate of Public Convenience (CPC) to operate as public utilities.

The record showed that some of the violators were first time offenders and it will be too harsh for them that their vehicles are confiscated;

SECTION 2. Repealing Clause - All previous ordinances, executive orders, rules and regulations or parts thereof which are inconsistent with this ordinance are hereby repealed and modified accordingly.

SECTION 3. Separability Clause. If, for any reason or reasons, any part or provision of this ordinance shall be held unconstitutional or invalid, other parts or provisions hereof which are not affected thereby shall continue to be in full force and in effect.

SECTION 4. RESOLUTION NO. 18-691

WHEREAS, the body deliberated on the 2nd Indorsement dated November 29, 2018, from City Mayor Celso G. Regencia, requesting for the passage of an Ordinance expropriating the 63,110 sq. m. lot in the name of Mr. Luis Alberto;

WHEREAS, said parcel of land registered in the Registry of Deeds of Iligan City as Lot No. 3351, Cad 292 and covered by TCT No. T-8167, will be utilized as public cemetery and evacuation center for Barangay Bonbonon and the neighboring hinterland areas;

WHEREAS, as to the determination of the price of the land, the Committee on Appraisal has issued CA Resolution No. 04, series of 2018 dated June 5, 2018, appraising the lot at P50.00 per square meter, including the improvements thereon;

WHEREAS, in his 1st Indorsement dated November 26, 2018, City Legal Officer Voltaire I. Rovira, recommended to expropriate said property so that the court could attain jurisdiction on the matter. Mr. Alberto has his last known address at Celdran Village, Barangay Tubod, Iligan City, but he cannot be located there, in spite of diligent effort by the residents of Barangay Bonbonon and concerned officials to locate him;

WHEREAS, in granting the Local Chief Executive the power to exercise the power of imminent domain, Section 19 of the Local Government Code states that:

RESOLUTION NO. 18-638

WHEREAS, the Barangay Government of Mahayahay, Iligan City has completed the construction of a multi-purpose hall just a stone’s throw away from the Mahayahay Barangay Hall, realizing in the process the long dream of barangay officials to have a gym for the barangay;

WHEREAS, since the said barangay gym was still not officially named and that Barangay Mahayahay has this program to name barangay landmarks, facilities and streets in honor of their barangay officials, they adopted Barangay Ordinance No. 18-02 naming it as Rafael C. Canoy Gymnasium in honor of the late Mr. Rafael C. Canoy, former Punong Barangay of Mahayahay (2002-2007);

WHEREAS, the construction of said gym started in 2002 during the term of Mr. Canoy. It was he who initiated the acquisition of the lot and spearheaded the solicitation of funds from sympathetic individuals.

At present it was used as permanent sports center and multi-purpose complex;

Be it ordained by the Sangguniang Panlungsod of Iligan in its session assembled, that:

SECTION 1. The Multi-Purpose Hall in Barangay Mahayahay, Iligan City, is NAMED as the same is hereby NAMED as Rafael C. Canoy Gymnasium in honor of the late Rafael C. Canoy, former Punong Barangay of Mahayahay, Iligan City.

SECTION 2. Installation of Signs - The City Engineer’s Office is hereby ordered to immediately install the necessary signs bearing the name “ RafaelC. Canoy Gymnasium,” thereat.

SECTION 3. Repealing Clause. All previous ordinances, executive orders, rules and regulations or parts thereof which are inconsistent with this ordinance are hereby repealed and modified accordingly.

SECTION 4. Effectivity - This Ordinance shall take effect ten days (10) after the publication of a local newspaper, as set forth by law.

WHEREAS, P/Col Jose C. Orbe was bom on July 16, 1922 in Camp Keithley, Marawi City, Lanao del Sur. He spent his elementary years in Kolambugan Elementary School; High School at Lanao High School and earned his Liberal Arts degree from the Visayas Institute, in Cebu in 1941;

WHEREAS, in April 9, 1942 he was inducted as member of the USAFFE as private at 81st Div Hq and Hq Co Service Trp (USAFFE).

He was commissioned as reserve officer in December 15, 1942 and was called to active duty on April 9, 1942

WHEREAS, Orbe joined the guerilla in Sta Felomina, Iligan City as Junior Officer (1942-1943); Commanding Officer Aug 17, 1943-Feb. 1945 of the “I” Co 3rd Bn 120th Inf 108th Div (Guerr);

WHEREAS, his bravery was challenged on October 24, 1942 when he encountered enemies at Sta. Filomina, Iligan City. In that encounter, one Jitney was captured and about 7 Japanese killed including the famous Japanese leader in Iligan, Lanao Capt. Ohura. On December 24, the same year, they attacked Japanese garrison at Iligan and then on February 6, 1943 they attacked Iligan wharf with only one squad;

WHEREAS, in granting general powers to the Local Government Units to name public places, streets and structures, Section 13 (b) (2) of the Local Government Code is crystal-clear in its stipulation that the Sangguniang Panlungsod of a Highly-Urbanized City may change the name of city roads, avenues, thoroughfares and bridges within its territorial jurisdiction, in consultation with the Philippine Historical Commission (PHC);

WHEREAS, in his extensive j^ears of military and police service, the late Col. Jose C. Orbe served with dedication and a well-merited reputation by reason of his bravery, diligence and fidelity towards the public;

WHEREAS, in granting general powers to the Local Government Units to name public places, streets and structures, Section 13 (b) (2) of the Local Government Code is crystal-clear in its stipulation that the Sangguniang Panlungsod of a Highly-Urbanized City may change the name of city roads, avenues, thoroughfares and bridges within its territorial jurisdiction, in consultation with the Philippine Historical Commission (PHC);

Approaches to improve English reading proficiency

DEPED and individual schools must develop a reading intervention progam that will cater students who are in the frustration and instructional levels.

This can be done by employing peer tutor to enhance the reading skills of those in the independent level.

We must also provide opportunities to reading teachers for professional development by sending them in trainings, seminars, workshops and symposia especially the design to enhance teachers’ skills in teaching reading and uplifting the reading proficiency of the pupils.

We must also device localized and contextualized reading materials, text and selection in order to connect the application of real setting with that of the

reading proficiency of the students.

We must also ensure the participation of the parents and community in uplifting the reading proficiency of the students. Parents may be encouraged to tutor their children especially in reading.

The school must allocate some budget to programs, events and activities directly related to reading activities and include in the procurement the materials and books needed for reading remediation activities.

We must regularly monitor the reading proficiency of the students and develop a reward system for pupils who have achieved the highest percentage of the reading proficiency acquisition at the end of every reading remediation program.

Maranao Mamis Desserts Not to forget the Filipino’s penchant for sugary delights, Babu Kwan will also serve classic Maranao Mamis for dessert. Unfortunately, our favorites Dodol and Tiyat’g were unavailable for the first day due to a brownout in Lanao which precluded suppliers from

preparing the raw materials.

Fortunately, we were served Balolon, pandan crepe stuffed with sweet grated and toasted coconut meat and muscovado sugar.

Pagana Maranaw Aside from the menu, Babu Kwan also aims to promote Maranao arts through its interior decoration and culture through its unique Japanese inspired circular dining tables.

“In our special gatherings in Lanao called Pagana Maranaw, we serve food on the floor where the guests squat. Food is served in ornate aluminum

ware called tabak, and this is known as the ultimate dining experience in Lanao,” Ms. Khal explained.

“However, it’s difficult to eat with this arrangement so we thought of these Japanese inspired circular dining areas with wood carved tabled inlaid with mother-of-pearl hand crafted in Tugaya, Lanao del Sur. This is not common, but we decided to showcase these as well, to help our fellow Maranao artisans continue their craft by promoting it in Babu Kwan. It is still Asian and very comfortable for diners.”

However, some people do love to perform in front of people. How amazing would it be if everyone were like them, right? But, no. Not everyone can be as brave and courageous

as they are. So, how can we fight stage fright? Here are a few tips: 1. Understand why you are there.

I remember I used to be very afraid of standing in front of everyone. My knees would go weak, my lips would tremble, and I would do uncalled-for body gestures that distracts the audience in front of me.

However, I have made a few talks start roughly but end smoothly with a perfect finishing touch because I realized that I am there because someone saw the potential in me. Someone believed that I can do it, and that I can deliver. So, think of how grateful you should

be. Think of the honor it brings you as a performer.

2. Practice.

To overcome one’s fear, is to immerse yourself more with it. Dip yourself in the pool of your fears until you grow resilient over it. It may seem easier said than done, but it’s either this way, or the highway.

When you practice, start by doing it in front of people you’re comfortable with.

Then, try to do it in front of people you’re not so close with. Even joining a local Toastmaster’s club could help, too!

3. The ‘I don’t care’ attitude.

Sometimes, our fears outrun and outnumber

us because we think too much of committing mistakes. How would people think of me? How would people react if I make a fool out of myself? Sometimes in life, we need to learn and apply the ‘I don’t care’ attitude. Human as we are, we’re not born perfect. We make mistakes every now and then, and that’s fine! It’s in our nature.

From here, as you get more comfortable with yourself, you’ll definitely ace any performance, any public speaking event, and any agenda that requires you to be in front of an audience. As they say, practice makes perfect!

Inflation pressures have eased further, reflecting mainly the decline in food inflation amid improved supply conditions, while inflation expectations have stabilized further during the quarter. Meanwhile, the BSP observed that overall prospects for domestic activity continue to be firm, supported by a projected recovery in household spending and the sustained implementation of the government’s infrastructure program.

• The BSP also noted that the risks to the inflation outlook remained broadly balanced for 2019 even as further risks could emerge from prolonged El Niño weather conditions and higher-thanexpected increases in global oil and food prices. For 2020, the risks lean toward the downside amid slowdown in global economic activity.

Looking ahead, the BSP will continue to monitor developments affecting the inflation outlook to ensure that the monetary policy stance remains consistent with its price stability objective.

Ideology colonization is easily recognized. When there is a new value entering the majority value, it turns out to be controversial. Chaos and frontal defense by the indigenous people comes up. It is easy to detect. It can happen everywhere. And, the country and the government can provide measures for such a chaos. Unlike the economy which tends to be pseudo.

So, right or wrong is my country. We must be united, nationalist, but not chauvinist.

The cloak of anonymity afforded by social media has given rise to armies of trolls who derive enjoyment in disrupting/ disturbing discussions, bashing personalities or just simply annoying others.

Wittingly or unwittingly, careless social media participants give out personal information which expose them to identity theft, financial scams, blackmail, sexual exploitation and security threats.

Because of the foregoing, do we need to give up Facebook and Twitter?

Not at all. As long as we do not become prisoners in our virtual reality. And also for as long as we follow the common-sense advice of practising responsibility in the web: Think before you tweet.

“Is the salary of a mayor serving for three years enough to buy votes during the election,” he asked.

An Electronics Engineer from MSU Marawi and former ICT Chief of the defunct ARMM, Abde said they had two personal sources of inspiration for Babu Kwan.

“The Marawi siege destroyed our Maranao way of life, culture and heritage, not only in ground zero but also in surrounding towns.

Cultural practices of IDPs were displaced when they moved elsewhere where ingredients for their traditional foods were unavailable. Even artisans in far off places like Tugaya, Lanao Sur lost their markets since no one comes to Marawi anymore,” Abde shared in his welcome remarks.

“This inspired us to do something to preserve our Maranao and Moro Muslim culture and cultural practices.

Food is one of the best ways to understand the culture of the people. Through the food we serve, people will learn to identify our culture as Maranaos from Lanao or Muslims from Mindanao.”

In one of our trainings in Malaysia, we were told they are promoting Halal foods not because they only want to serve the Muslims, but to open Halal food to all peoples of the earth. By opening Babu Kwan, we are complying with that directive.”

Earlier, Chef Has won the right to represent the city in the national competition when she and team mates Ivy Ann P. Duldulao and Jade Charmaine P. Mangao won Silver, the highest award in the Chef Wars, 20th Kumbira, the longest running and biggest culinary event outside Metro Manila in August 2016.

While Babu Kwan will eventually serve Halal Moro, Filipino and other Asian cuisines, for the week-long soft opening, the menu will be limited to the following: Beef Randang, Chicken Piyaparan, Pizazati, Sambal Mussels, Chicken BBQ, Tiyula Itum, Daral and Garlic Prawns.

But for the first day of the ribbon cutting, we were treated with spicy peanuts, Sambal Mussels and Pizazati for appetizers, followed by the main courses Beef Randang, Carabao Randang, Chicken Piyaparan, Chicken Pyanggang, Kyuning Rice and Balolon for

dessert.

“In Lanao del Sur, Randang is traditionally made with carabao beef (carabeef),” explained Ms. Khal, who will initially manage Babu Kwan.

“Beef and Carabeef Randang have different sauces. Carabeef Randang sauce is stronger, with sambal and tomato paste, toasted, grated coconut meat and lemon grass (tanglad).”

Babu Kwan will also serve Tiyula Itum (Tausug for ‘black stew) and Piyanggang manok, Tausug favorites from Sulu.

Tiyula Itum is a braised beef or goat soup dish originating with a characteristic black color due to the use of charred coconut meat.
