Legarda’s plastic solution

SENATOR Loren Legarda has lately announced she would file a bill banning the use of micro-plastics in consumer products that harm the environment and threaten marine life. With all her accolades as a self-proclaimed environmentalist, Legarda’s move (read: dream) to come up with that bill is another political grandstanding. Too late the hero and here’s why. For a long, long time, Mother Earth has a plastic problem, even before Legarda came into being. Already more than 9.1 billion tons of plastic of any kind and in any form are produced on Earth regularly and dumped into open spaces -- landfills, seas and oceans, mountains, plains and plateaus.

Name it, the Earth have it. Plastic is everywhere. The report in the journal Science Advances is described as the first global analysis of all mass-produced plastics and warns that an even more dire scenario lies ahead. At the current pace, over 13 billion tons of plastic waste will be discarded in landfills or in the environment by 2050. This amount -- which converts to 12 billion in metric tons -- is about 35,000 times as heavy as the Empire State Building in New York. Most plastics do not biodegrade in any meaningful sense, so the plastic waste humans have generated could be with us for hundreds or even thousands of years. The estimates underscore

the need to think critically about the materials we use and our waste management practices. Researchers compiled their data from production statistics for resins, fibers and additives from a variety of industry sources. The report found out that as of 2015, nearly seven billion tons (6.3 metric tons) of plastic waste was generated on Planet Earth. A total of 79 percent of that plastic waste accumulated in landfills or the environment, including the oceans. Despite widespread efforts toward re-usability, only nine percent was recycled. Another 12 percent was incinerated, a process that can also be harmful to the environment. Recycling is not much help when it comes to plas-

tics, because they do not dissolve in the environment. None of the plastics in widespread use are biodegradable. Just over two tons of plastics were produced globally in 1950, when mass manufacturing of the durable material began, said the report. By 2015, that number skyrocketed to over 440 million tons, outpacing most other man-made materials, with the exception of steel and cement. About half of the total See PLASTIC, page 11

Elections As Showbiz

DAVAO CIT Y (MindaNews/25 April) – Writing from Kiev in the Ukraine, Simon Shuster (whose article for Time magazine appeared in the 8 April 2019 issue) wrote about the current Presidential elections in that country. Referring to the fact that the frontrunner among those running for the office is the country’s famous comedian – Volodymyr Zelensky – Shuster posits: “No other politician (except perhaps the former realityTV star who occupies the Oval Office) has provided a truer test of the theory that politics in our age is just a form of show business.” Perhaps we need to inform Shuster that this theory has been working in the Philippines already for a long time. What he wrote in regard to Ukraine’s electoral exercise might as

well refer to our own brand of conducting elections. As what is happening now in the run-up to the May 2019 elections, one can refer to this exercise as a form of show business. Just take a pause and reflect on who are running for the various offices and what they do to get the voters’ nod. Either the candidates are from showbiz or they are adopting the showbiz tactics that effectively draw viewers’ attention. For about four decades now, those from showbiz – movie and TV stars, athletes and other celebrities made famous by popular media – have increasingly made their presence as candidates for electoral positions from local to congressional to national levels. First there was the matinee idol of the 1940s-50s Rogelio dela Rosa followed by the likes of Erap

Estrada and Fernando Poe Jr. who both run for the Presidency. As everyone knows, Estrada won but was booted out of office only to return later as Mayor of Manila. Many believe that Poe should have won but his camp did not have the efficient machinery that Macapagal-Arroyo was able to set up which guaranteed her winning that hotly contested elections. Action stars seem to have the edge when it comes to shifting from movies/TV to the Senate. From Estrada and Poe, we now have the likes of Lito Lapid, Jinggoy Estrada and Bong Revilla. Despite their lackluster performance as Senators and cases of corruption (for Estrada and Revilla), the current survey shows they are bound to win again in this year’s elections. Even the likes of Gen. Bato and

Bong Go know the power of media, which was why they found ways to have the dramatization of their lives made into a movie or TV film. (Remember Marcos’ film Iginuhit ng Tadhana? That movie was one reason he won when he run for the Presidency). But there is also the comedian, Tito Sotto who is now Senate President. In past and present elections other movie/ TV stars have successfully used their popularity to win seats as Congresspersons, Governors or Mayors. The list is quite long as it includes: Loren Legarda, Noli de Castro, Vilma Santos, Richard Gomez, Lucy Torres, Herbert Bautista, Lani Mercado, Isko Moreno and many others. There are also those who tried their luck and ended up losing See SHOWBIZ, page 11

Bong Go backs Duterte’s call for creation of Department of Disaster Resiliency; stresses need to level up disaster preparation and response FORMER Special Assistant to the President and 2019 senatorial candidate Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go threw his support behind President Rodrigo Duterte’s call for the creation of a Department of Disaster Resilience amid the deadly 6.1 magnitude earthquake that hit Luzon on Monday. It could be recalled that in his 3rd State of the Nation Address last July 23, 2018, President Rodrigo Duterte reiterated his call for Congress to pass a law creating a more empowered department that would provide full-time focus on disaster management and

would take charge of disaster risk reduction, preparedness and response with better recovery and rehabilitation. “Madalas po tamaan ng bagyo, lindol at iba pang kalamidad ang ating bansa. Kung may iisang ahensya po na nakatutok dito, mas maayos, mabilis at maaasahan ang serbisyong maibibigay ng gobyerno para rumesponde at ihanda ang bansa sa ganitong mga hindi inaasahang pangyayari,” he said. As of 6:00 a.m. Wednesday, a total of 16 people were killed, 86 wounded and 14 persons still missing in Region III, according to the of-

ficial report of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council. A total of 80 structures and buildings in Region III and NCR sustained damage as a result of the quake. NDRRMC also reported that at least 10 persons were injured in Region VIII as a result of the 6.5 magnitude quake in Eastern Samar. “Kailangan po talaga natin na ang i-scale up ang preparedness to resilliency against earthquake….Ibig sabihin napapanahon na din na talagang magkaroon ng sariling departamento na nakatutok talaga dito sa mga ganitong pangyayari.

Ako suportado ko po ito,” Go said in a radio interview. Go said the matter was brought up anew during the briefing led by President Duterte in San Fernando, Pampanga after conducting an ocular inspection of the damage caused by the tremor. The former SAP said that if he is elected to the Senate, he would press efforts to pass a law creating such a department. “Nasa kongreso na po ito itong creation of Department of Disaster Resilience (DDR) at napapanahon na (ito). Aprubado na ito sa House of Representa-

tives and pending na ito sa Senado. Asahan niyo, supportado ko ito pag nasa Senado na ako, “ Go said. Go has been advocating for the establishment of strong, safe and wellequipped evacuation centers in the country as part of his legislative agenda. Meanwhile, Go assured the people of Samar and adjacent provinces rocked by the 6.5 magnitude earthquake on Tuesday that the Duterte administration will extend to them the same kind of assistance extended to the victims of Luzon earthquake. MANILA -- Philippine authorities have announced the list of foreign banks tapped as coordinators and bookrunners for its planned Euro bond offering but National Treasurer Rosalia de Leon remains mum on additional details. “Cannot disclose yet. Have to see market appetite,” she said. News reports said the Philippines has appointed Deutsche Bank and UBS as joint global coordinators for the planned debt issuance. These two, along with BNP Paribas, Credit Suisse and Standard Chartered were also appointed as bookrunners. Treasury officials said they are considering the issuance of benchmark offer volume, or about USD500 million, worth of Euro bond as part of the government’s decision to diversity its securities investments. Ground motion data crucial in designs of building, infra By JEANEVIVE DURON ABANGAN

DAVAO CITY -- Data on ground motion characteristics play a crucial role in ensuring seismic resilience of buildings and infrastructures. Department of Science and Technology Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOSTPhiVolcs) Undersecretary Renato Solidum pointed this out during the recent launching of the “Metro Davao Site Response Atlas” in Davao City. He deemed the Atlas as important for Metro Davao which he said “has been hosting residential, medium

to high rise buildings to accommodate the increasing population.” “If construction is not properly guided with appropriate earthquake data, this could give rise to prob-

ability earthquake hazard,” he pointed out. Aside from Davao City, included in the “Metro Davao Site Response Atlas” are the cities of Digos in Davao del Sur; the cities of

Panabo, Tagum and Island Garden City of Samal in Davao del Norte. Also covered in the Atlas are the municipalities of Sta. Cruz in Davao del Sur and Carmen of Davao del Norte. To aid in the study on ground condition and earthquake hazard, Solidum recommended the use of “DOST-Phivolcs Faultfinder Mobile App” to locate active fault-lines, a necessary information for disaster preparedness. But Solidum said “the most important hazard that we wanted to prepare for would be the strong ground shaking because this can

cause collapses of houses and buildings and infrastructures”. D O ST- Ph ivol c s e x plained that the Atlas provides information “to understand the ground motion and site response during strong earthquakes, which can be used to increase seismic resiliency of residential and medium-to- high rise buildings in Metro Davao”. The Atlas shows maps on the Shear Wave Velosity 30 (VS30) Model, Peak Ground Acceleration, Short Micronization Period, and Long Period Micronization of Metro Davao. In the case of the Luzon earthquake, Go said President Duterte visited the family of the initial five quake fatalities reported and provided them assistance before the briefing in San Fernando. Go said the President was apparently satisfied with the initial response of both the concerned local government units and the national agencies. “Gusto po sana n’ya (na) siya ang mauna (pumunta sa Pampanga), pero nabalitaan niya na mabilis ang response ng local government unit, at national government at talagang nag-augment po sila sa lahat ng pangangailangan ng ating mga kababayan,” Go said. He said that President Duterte’s main directive to the concerned agencies is to restore normalcy as soon as possible. Go also thanked private individuals and entities who have volunteered their services and resources in helping victims of the quake in Pampanga. “Nakakatuwang tingnan na tulong-tulong ang mga kapatid natin, hindi lang po sa gobyerno pati po yung sa mga pribado nagpadala sila ng kagamitan para doon sa gumuhong supermarket,” he said. The former SAP said the strong quakes that hit Luzon and Samar should be reminded to everyone not to take for granted the earthquake drills. “Sana po ay huwag nating balewalain yung mga earthquake drills po…. at isaisip po natin parati kung ano ba ang dapat nating gawin sa mga ganitong pangyayari tulad ng nangyari sa Pam-

Likewise, Go said that like many of the quake victims in Pampanga, those affected by the tremor in Samar and nearby areas needing medical assistance can seek help from the Malasakit Center in Tacloban City. “Sa mga kapatid natin na sa Samar, mayroon po tayong Malasakit Center diyan sa Tacloban tulad po dito sa Pampanga. He noted that while President Duterte announced last March 21, 2019 the official termination of talks between the government and the Communist Party of the Philipines, Executive Order No. 70 the President signed last December directing the creation of a national task force to “end local communist armed conflict” remains. Go said this means President Duterte did not entirely close the doors to local rebels to come down from the mountains, as he also cited the on-going government incentives to rebel-returnees such as the e-CLIP and PAMANA programs. Likewise, the Philippine National Police announced last March that all police

Go said he is familiar with the sentiment of the communist rebels, having accompanied then Davao Mayor Duterte several times in the mountains, going into the lair of communist rebels, to facilitate the release of their hostages. It could be recalled that last February, Go and the President’s son Sebastian “Baste” Duterte, facilitated the release of the remaining eight hostages by the communist New People’s Army (NPA) in Agusan del Sur. Unless the problem of rebellion is solved, Go said it would be very difficult for progress to take off in provinces such as Agusan Del Norte despite its generous share of development projects under the Duterte admnistration. Among others, the government is awaiting proposals for the P50.46-million,

4.76-km communal irrigation system in Barangay Poblacion, Rosario, Agusan del Sur that with 23 units of canal structures to serve 264 hectares of rice area in Barangay Libuac, Poblacion and Tagbayan. Upon completion, the project is expected to increase rice production from 3 metric tons to 4 metric tons per hectare for conventional rice farming and 3 metric tons to 3.6 metric tons per hectare for natural farming. hub in Mindanao, and amplify its vast potentials as the primary growth center in the southern Philippines,” Lim added. Lim also bared the robust performance of the services sector which grew by 8.1 percent, on account of the increasing value of outputs, particularly from transportation, real estate, retail trade, financial intermediation, and public administration. She said public administration grew 12.9 percent while financial intermediation grew by 10.4 percent. Lim said government expenditures on public services, including social protection and security and defense were higher in 2018 because of the current administration’s priority on peace, public order and security programs, social welfare and protection programs. The positive growth in public administration contribution, Lim said, would not have been possible if government agencies had not achieved higher disbursement rates on their respective budget appropriations. Increases in attention and investments are also conspicuous in the financial services, especially in the cities, as demand for financial services and products grew. On security impact to the economy, Lim said there is a notable deceleration of armed groups and atrocities from armed sectors. She said martial law even has a positive effect notably on tourism arrivals. For 2019, Lim stressed there is a need to catch up with planned targets especially in the agriculture sector, particularly the fishery industry which suffered a slump in 2018. She also cited the need to improve productivity levels, capacitate fisherfolk, improve on financing and skills development and processing of products. (PNA)

year-on-year to PHP1.35 trillion. In a report to the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) Thursday, the bank said credit card loans grew by

20.3 percent, housing loans by 9.9 percent and corporate loans by 11.8 percent. BPI executives target to increase the share of consumer loans to around 35 percent of total in four to five years from the current 20 percent. The higher portion is accounted for by the corporate segment. BPI Chief Finance Officer and head of Strategy and Development Maria Theresa Javier, during the same briefing, said they are giving consumer and small and medium enterprise (SME) loans greater focus, with a combined target growth of 15 percent this year, higher than the 10-12 percent eyed for corporate lending. Relatively, BPI executives have set a PHP6 billion capital expenditures this year, higher than in the past, as it focuses more on digitalization of its processes as well as expanding its branch network. Javier said they target to open 14 new BPI branches and 100 branches of its microfinance arm – BPI Direct BanKo. To date, the bank has over 800 branches in the country, Hong Kong, and Europe and about 200 BanKO branches nationwide. Javier said half of the new branches that will be opened this year will be in the Visayas and Mindanao, same as their decisions in recent years as they recognize the rising economic growth in these areas. Relatively, Consing said a big chunk of the capital expenditures will be allocated for digitalization since this will have a big impact on their operations and cost in the coming years. Digitalization will eventually lessen the need to put up additional physical branches since more customers will have an option to use mobile and online platforms, he added. (PNA)

financial service providers, and enhance project management for agriculture-based micro and small enterprises. It is expected to benefit some 78,000 households. Go vowed that he would supp or t the programs and projects of President Duterte, including development projects for the countryside and the threepronged campaign against illegal drugs, criminality

and corruption. “Ipagpapatuloy ko po ang mga pagbabagong nasimulan ni Pangulong Duterte, kabilang na ang kampanya laban sa iligal na droga, kampanya sa corruption, at kampanya sa kriminalidad,” Go stressed. Also an important item in the legislative agenda of Go is his advocacy to improve the delivery of health services in the country, particularly through the establishment of Malasakit Center. A program of the Duterte administration based on Go’s idea, the Malasakit Center makes it easier and faster for poor patients to avail of medical and financial assistance from the government by bringing together in one room representatives of concerned agencies such as the DOH, DSWD, PCSO and Philhealth. “Ito po ang gusto kong isabatas pagdating ng panahon,” said Go, noting such a law would enable the establishment of Malasakit Center in more provinces and key urban centers in the country and ensure as well the continuity of the program after the term of the Duterte administration. Go assured his fellow Mindanaoans that if fortunate to win a seat in the Senate he would serve them the way he served for over 21 years President Duterte: with integrity and honesty. “Asahan nyo po, patuloy ninyo akong magiging tulay kay Pangulong Duterte. Wala po kaming ibang hangarin ni Pangulong Duterte kundi kabutihan ng bawat Pilipino dahil mahal namin kayo,” Go said. Other priority concerns under Go’s legislative agenda include programs for agriculture, housing for the poor, education, long-term sports development, fire protection and prevention, barangay welfare, creation of a Department of OFW and improved benefits for senior citizens.

Driving Motivation in Class By ANA D. ESCOBAR Master Teacher I West City Central School

How important is it to be motivated at work? What can one accomplish when he has the inspiration and the motivation to be good at what he does? Well, if you would think about it, a lot of things could be attained when a person is driven to excellence. That person could outdo himself in so many ways he never thought he could. The fact is, when people are motivated, they become efficient and effective with what they do. So,

what causes a person to be motivated? Let’s find out. What’s very common in any industry nowadays is the fact that many people don’t like their jobs. With this distortion of interest, it greatly affects the persons “working libido.” When a person is demotivated because he doesn’t have the balance he needs between work and life, he falters at almost anything he does professionally. The best thing to do, is to hire the right people. The kind of people who takes challenges positively and responds to them in a clear outlook in his professional growth. People

who learn to love what they do are the ones who truly excels in the working area. Second common issue in any workplace is the environment alone. When a worker feels that his working environment is no longer conducive for him, he begins to contemplate on whether he should have a career change, or a change of company. Now, what makes an environment toxic for employees? It’s not just his cubicle, or his working hours that managers need to consider, it’s also the people surrounding him. Bullying is one factor, or crab men-

tality. When someone is drawn out from his track because of these, it would only cause him to think of his daily working space as a pit of hell that causes him struggle. Now, if you are an employee who lacks the motivation to do your job, think about this: life is short. Don’t waste your time and your chances on things that would make you miss out on opportunities in life. Find a job that not only makes you happy, but would also make you grow professionally and individually.

ginger (lengkuas) . Once the meat is lightly browned, water is added along with additional ingredients like black pepper, lemongrass, and shallots and allowed to simmer until cooked. Coconut milk is sometimes added to thicken the broth. Other ingredients like tomatoes and siling haba chilis are also sometimes added, but are not traditional. Tiyula itum is traditionally served with white rice or tamu rice cakes. Tiyula itum is culturally important among the Tausug and is also known as Food for the Royalty since is usually served during special occasions like weddings and Hari Raya festivities. Piyanggang manok, (or pyanggang manok), is chicken braised in turmeric, onions, lemongrass, ginger, siling haba chilis, garlic, coconut milk, and ground burnt coconut and rather looks like tiyula itum, since both use burnt coconut. It is likewise black in color, and the chicken may also be grilled before adding the marinade. Maranao Mamis Desserts Not to forget the Filipino’s penchant for sugary delights, Babu Kwan will also serve classic Maranao Mamis for dessert. Unfortunately, our favorites Dodol and Tiyat’g were unavailable for the first day due to a brownout in Lanao which precluded suppliers from preparing the raw materials. Fortunately, we were served Balolon, pandan crepe stuffed with sweet grated and toasted coconut meat and muscovado sugar. Pagana Maranaw Aside from the menu, Babu Kwan also aims to promote Maranao arts through its interior decoration and culture through its unique Japanese inspired circular dining tables. “In our special gatherings in Lanao called Pagana Maranaw, we serve food on the floor where the guests squat. Food is served in ornate aluminum ware called tabak, and this is known as the ultimate dining experience in Lanao,” Ms. Khal explained. “However, it’s difficult to eat with this arrangement so we thought of these Japanese inspired circular dining areas with wood carved tabled inlaid with mother-of-pearl hand crafted in Tugaya, Lanao del Sur. This is not common, but we decided to showcase these as well, to help our fellow Maranao artisans continue their craft by promoting it in Babu Kwan. It is still Asian and very comfortable for diners.”

Plastic... from page 4

amount of plastics produced from 1950 to 2015 has been made in just the last 13 years. While steel and cement are used for years, most plastic is used in packaging -- think plastic water bottles that are used once

and discarded. Roughly half of all the steel we make goes into construction, so it will have decades of use -- plastic is the opposite. Half of all plastics become waste after four or fewer years of use. Plastic debris can now be found in oceans all over the world. In 2015, eight million metric tons of plastic entered the oceans. Many bags drift into the ocean, strangling turtles, suffocating seabirds and filling the stomachs of dolphins and whales with waste until they die of starvation. By 2050, we will have more plastic in the ocean than fish. Plastic bags take between 500 to 1,000 years to break down. It enters the human food chain through fish and other animals. Plastic problem is real that needs massive global surgical operation, not a kind of band-aid treatment done locally. That Legarda Bill, if ever it will come into being, is nothing but a ‘plastic’ solution. or being charged with cases in court including: Nora Aunor, Rudy Fernandez, Alma Moreno, Rhoderick Paulate, Edu Manzano, Ronnie Ricketts, Cesar Montano and others. Among those in the field of sports, there are politicians like Manny Pacquiao. There is also some kind of magic in the family name of such famous personalities, as their offspring and other relatives capitalize on such names. Estrada/Ejercito is one example. Grace Poe’s popularity is linked to the father. In many instances, such families morph into political dynasties. Sons and daughters follow their parents’ footsteps. This list is getting longer every time there is an election. Such family dynasties include those of the Villars, Binays, Cayetanos, Pimentels, and so many others. There also seems to be a connection between showbiz and the dramas involving political dynasties. Quite a few of the more popular teleseryes show the melodramatic incidents in the life of political families with its twists and turns. What is happening to the Binay family in terms of who the patriarch will support among siblings running for the same office has the same dramatic content as teleseryes. Same with the continuing melodrama involving the Estrada/Ejercito siblings, which tangentially also involve the wife and mistress. The earlier conflict between Congressmen Alvarez and Floriendo which erupted in Congress,

Sat-Sun, April 27-28, 2019 provoked by the catfight between their mistresses, was pure showbiz. This dramatic confrontation ended with the latter’s fall from grace as Speaker of the House. But nothing beats the Dutertes in the contemporary political landscape. Here is a political dynasty whose members act in a way that not even the most imaginative scriptwriter could fictionalize. All three children are now running for public offices, including the youngest son who at one time showed no interest at all in engaging in politics. The daughter has turned into a major political force and has been tagged as the father’s successor in Malacanang. The middle child – despite the alleged link to drugs – is running unopposed and will soon be in Congress. There is even an in-law that is also getting into local politics. So what brings about this phenomenon of “politics being a form of show business?” One cannot deny that one factor why a candidate gets elected is name recall. And celebrities have an edge over those whose faces do not appear on any screen – whether that of TVs, cinemas, social media’s gadgets and even tarpaulins advertising products. Mass media has always been an instrument to tap if a candidate wants exposure; the advent of social media has made that need even more urgent. Which is why politicians and their parties have employed trolls for purposes of manipulating facts or popularizing fake news. In the post-modern era, segments of our population can easily be mesmerized by those they idolize as media’s gaze is on them. There seems to be a need to identify with those who have power which no longer demands strong adherence to moral values such as integrity, honesty and ethical behavior in society. Most of us no longer demand of our politicians the high standards of the likes of the Claro Rectos, Jose Dioknos and Lorenzo Tanadas. Many of us do not even care if there are quality debates among the candidates where they are able to articulate their visions for the betterment of this country and its people. Sad to say, that the “kababawan” that exemplifies showbiz (for we have to admit that there are but a few exceptions to films/ TV shows that have depth) makes our politics also shallow. And where showbiz has nothing substantial to contribute to a radical transformation of the ills of Philippine society then it follows there is little hope we can place on the kind of politics we have in our country today. him at all, I suddenly saw General Third before me. He was standing just a few feet away, looking awful. His face was deathly white and his right hand was over his heart. He said these terrible words to me, ‘There is a hell, and I am in it!’ With that, he quickly disappeared. I ran right over to you, almost out of my mind! Ah, what a horrible experience! I don’t know what to think of it.” Rostopchin tried to convince Orloff that it had been a hallucination, a trick of his imagination. He attempted to make him believe that he had been dreaming. These extraordinary, mystifying things were to be put out of his mind. He did his utmost to convince him with arguments which would ease his fears. Strong men still need to be consoled and comforted. At last, he accompanied a stupefied Orloff back to his own house. A few days later, a war report brought to Count Rostopchin the account of General Third’s death. He learned that on the very morning of that memorable day, in which Count Orloff had seen and heard him, at the exact time in which he had appeared to him in Moscow, the wretched general had been shot and instantly killed! aimed at improving the efficiency of aquaculture production should remain a government priority. Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources-Davao regional director Fatma Idris explained the three-month closure of Davao Gulf to fishing activities from June 1 to August 30, 2018 caused the decline in the output of the fishery subsector. The gulf is a spawning ground for tuna and other marine creatures. Meanwhile, most of the fish catch of the fishing vessels in the region were brought to General Santos City. To increase the output of the subsector, she said they would assist fishers in putting up an additional 300 fish cages. Lim said the overall regional performance of agriculture, hunting, forestry and fishing sector last year registered a positive growth of 2.9%, or higher compared to 1.7% in 2017. The sector’s contribution to the overall Gross Domestic Regional Product was P42.610 billion, according to the the Philippine Statistics Authority. (Antonio L. Colina IV/ MindaNews)

Governed by the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of the Philippines in Manila, Filipino delegates not only from the Philippines but also from countries such as Australia, Canada, Ireland, Japan and the United States converge in this City of Golden Friendship. Foreign dignitaries from these countries are also here to attend the Ancom. They discussed yearend reports on Masonic agendas, which include their numerous charities and philanthropies. They also voted for the “Junior Grand Warden” who will stand in line to hold the position of future “Grand Master,” the title of the supreme head of Masons. Credited as the oldest existing fraternity in the world today, Freemasonry took roots in the Philippines at the onset of the 1890s. among others. What is Freemasonry? It is a civic movement promoting brotherhood and good works. It is a system of morality, veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols. Its meetings are characterized by initiations and rituals. As such, it is viewed by churches and governments as a secret society. But their charity and philanthropy are not a secret. They are an inseparable part of Freemasonry. Millions of dollars are spent in retirement homes, orphanages and hospitals to help the widows, the aged, the orphans and the burned and crippled children. They have a saying: “No man stands so tall as when he stoops down to help a needy child.” With blazing hearts we can humbly say, that charity and philanthropy are the lifeblood of Freemasonry.

Misto – An Art-Ful Blend of Authentic International Flavors at Seda Centrio Traditional recipes served with a modern twist through innovative presentations

MISTO, Seda hotels’ signature restaurant, welcomes guests to its modern interiors – a fusion of design and function that combines its multi-faceted character with a range of offerings that will satisfy the most discerning palate. Misto is the Italian word for “mixed”, a term that describes the medley of international flavours that comprise its a la carte selection ranging from universal classics to Filipino favourites. Seda Centrio’s Hotel Manager Armand Angeles says, “We provide options for global travellers to enhance their dining experience. But we also recognize that they value authenticity and will always yearn for the familiarity of traditional flavours.” Adding the fact that original recipes appeal to all generations, Misto’s value proposition is simple -- good food with great taste that has universal appeal, many of which are considered “comfort food” that evoke happy memories, or provide a feeling of contentment simply because they live up to the guests’ expectations. Executive Sous Chef Christopher Ben “Chris” Lugtu is the master behind-the-scenes at Misto in Seda Centrio, orchestrating accuracy in food preparation. “The key,” he says, “is precise timing, plus the use of fresh, high-quality ingredients.” He mentions Sous Vide BBQ Ribs, Roasted Peruvian Chicken, Tinola de Laguna, Scampi, and Dulce de Leche Cheesecake as some of the restaurant’s best-sellers which have consistently garnered constant praises from diners who find the experience doubly impressive due to Chef Chris’ artistic presentations. “This is how we give our dishes that personal touch,” he explains. “We stay true to the original recipe, then leave our own imprint by modifying its appearance to enhance its aesthetic appeal.” It is quite apropos that the chef is teeming with creativity, as Misto, like the rest of Seda Centrio, is a showcase of art, with stylized photographs, eye-catching wall art, and other complementing pieces that follow the hotel’s contemporary theme. Even the floor-to-ceiling glass windows seem to frame the creative spaces inside and out, evoking a seamless relationship between the indoor and outdoor environments. To summarize, Seda Centrio Hotel Manager Armand Angeles says that Misto in itself fulfils the essence of Seda hotels – an incomparable location, efficient yet unobtrusive service, and excellent value. “At Misto,” he concludes, “we give diners a taste of the old and new by blending cooking traditions with modern food presentations to provide an extraordinary dining experience.” Misto at Seda Centrio serves buffet breakfast daily and Executive Lunch Sets on weekdays. Designed with indoor and “al fresco” seating, it is open 6:00 am to 11:00 pm, Monday through Sunday at the hotel’s lobby level. Seda Centrio is located at CM Recto corner Corrales Avenue, Barangay 24, Cagayan de Oro City. For inquiries and reservations, please call tel. no. (088) 323 8888 or 09175775910.

MEET OUR CULINARY TEAM

CHEF CHRISTOPHER BEN “CHRIS” LUGTU, EXECUTIVE SOUS CHEF

With experience from working in a Forbes-rated 5-star restaurant and other service areas in a 5-star hotel with an extensive knowledge of international flavours, Chef Chris brims with passion for his craft. He holds the belief that the art of cooking is instrumental in creating meaningful relationships and healthy communities. Working under different international chefs and having been exposed to an array of techniques, Chef Chris has a cooking style that is heavily influenced by the region’s rich natural resources and incorporates quality ingredients from the different areas of Northern Mindanao. In addition, his dishes are subtly influenced by Latin cuisine because of the work he’s done in Waterside, an award-winning restaurant in Solaire Resort and Casino, Manila. A strategic work ethic is what he brings to Misto, along with a caring, team-oriented philosophy that focuses on creative collaborations with his culinary team, as well as engaging with diners, whom he says are not merely guests to feed. “The love for food is universal, but to dine and share the table with family and friends is what Filipino cuisine is all about,” says Chef Chris. He is delighted to introduce several signature dishes to the new and revamped a la carte menu emphasizing that each dish is a special product, created with thoughtfulness and a keen appreciation for the warmth of feeling that exceptional food always inspires.
