80% of Filipinos satisfied with gov’t response to Covid-19: poll T

HE majority of Filipinos have expressed satisfaction with the Duterte administration’s response to the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic, according to the survey results released by global polling firm Gallup International Association.

Based on the April 6 to 8 poll, around 80 percent of Filipinos believed the government is handling the Covid-19 crisis “well”. Only 18 percent expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s Covid-19 response, while two percent were ambivalent on the matter. What’s there to do while stuck indoors? Complete a puzzle. The more pieces the better. Feeling extra saucy? Take on a Rubik’s cube. Start a journal or

blog. Sure, it can be about the coronavirus but it can also be a specific interest from chess to cheese. If it won’t bother your neighbors, dust off that old instrument and practice. Shell Raises Recruitment Scam Alert

ILIPINAS Shell has issued a warning to the public against unscrupulous individuals who have been using the name of Pilipinas Shell in falsely recruiting applicants and then asking them to pay for supposed placement fees and the purchase of personal protective equipment (PPE). Reports reaching Shell revealed that fraudulent individuals and/or organizations posing as the company's HR personnel have been posting fake job advertisements online instructing applicants to submit their resume to shellphilippines. talents@gmail.com, a fictitious email address which is not an official email account of Shell or any of its partner

organizations. Following the submission of the resume, applicants are then reportedly instructed to advance an unspecified amount to cover a cash bond and the cost of PPEs, with an assurance that the amount would be reimbursed once the applicant gets the job. Once monies have been transferred, the scammer cuts off all contact with applicants. In a statement, Shell clarified that these individuals and/or groups are not connected to Shell. The recruitment process is done via official channels only and without requiring placement fees. Shell advised prospective applicants to contact the company through its official channels to verify job postings.

Let’s educate the world public well! If we search in Google scholar, we can find about 117,000 pages with thousand of research articles about coronavirus. Just do it, searching it by typing “coronavirus detection”! We can find many research results on it. I don’t know why public figures whose authorities related to covid-19 seem to make the world public confused. We realize that covid-19 is considered novel. It is said novel in the sense that it is really new. But, when we search, browsing the research results in Google Scholar, we will know that it is not new. There are lots of research articles related to coronavirus detection. Milano, F., Campbell, A. P et al., (2010), Shi, R., Ma, W. Et al., (2003), Lau, S. K, et al., (2003), Corman, V.

Et al., (2012), Poon, L. L., (2005), and many others— an uncountable number of researchers—who have done their research related to coronavirus. It means that, scientifically, this virus, as said to be novel is not really new. For the field- related scientists, the novel virus may not be new. It is not a novel one. So, how to educate the world public well is required. All the whole bodies or organs throughout the world should expose the coronavirus in detail. If possible, let all the scientists or researchers related to it get involved in spreading the complete information about covid-19. There must not be a monopoly in propaganda. It will be more dangerous when the media and

especially social media are dominated by misleading propaganda. There is some news that can be either true or fake. But, how to educate the world public is needed. It is wanted. The way is that all the official news or information must be done collaboratively. For example, let’s all the researchers or scientists related to the field of virus studies get involved in providing the best information. Otherwise, there will be different angels of spotting the information to the world public. Unfortunately, we are all up to now getting more and more confused. This is really confusing: coronavirus and the propaganda. We are not all well fleshed in biology. We are only the layman, the people

who get easily tricked with fake news. However, the world public leaders in any country have a responsibility to educate their nations. Try to let the people aware of not only how to cope with the outbreak but also how to educate them, by giving correct information. It is imperative that all the national leaders can let the scientist and researchers whose experts in virus and biology. It would be better when the world organ or body such as the United Nations (UN) let the world scientists get involved in providing the best information. KARL Kendrick Chua, the new Secretary-designate of the National Economic Development Authority may be young in the eyes of his critics but he has proven his mettle when he pushed for the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion Act. The TRAIN law was doubted by the opposition to bring reforms in Duterte’s tax agenda, however, Chua, who helped craft the tax reform measure, proved otherwise. The law exempts individual taxpayers with income not exceeding P250,000 but raised excise tax on sweetened beverages and fuel. This gave them extra money to spend. When Sec. Ernesto Pernia abandoned ship amidst

the rough seas that the Duterte government has to navigate, Chua’s immediate designation to head NEDA came as a surprise but apprehension settled quickly upon learning that he is, in fact, a no pushover. Pernia made a snide remark on Chua’s appointment saying “He must not just agree to everything”. Chua’s brief repartee was crisp and sharp. “I did not covet the position” and added, “my record will speak for itself ”. That should silence Pernia for good and stop smarting. He had his time. But his time is when everything is normal and calm. He opted to leave at the height of the storm and it was good riddance.

But Secretary Chua has a gargantuan task ahead of him. It helps that he came from the working force of Finance Sec. Sonny Dominguez and in fact, as undersecretary, heads the economic team in the department. Not everybody knows Chua and Dominguez himself is not free from criticisms coming from kibitzers and doomsayers. However, no one can quarrel against success. As head of the economic cluster of the Duterte government, the Philippines wiggled out from getting stuck in the rut. ANILA – Malacañang on Wednesday urged the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to study the effectiveness of the Fabunan antiviral injection in curing the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19). Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said the FDA should check if Fabunan is safe and effective for use in the treatment of Covid-19. “Bakit ba hindi napagaralan ‘yung sinasabing anti-viral injection ni Fabunan at once and for all, magdeklara ang FDA -- ito ba ay safe to use or hindi (Why is there no study about the Fabunan anti-viral injection so that, once and for all, the FDA could declare if it is safe to use or not),” Roque said in an interview with state-run Radyo Pilipinas. that circulated on social media this month claimed that Fabunan, a patented anti-viral drug against dengue developed by Washington-based Filipino doctor Ruben Fabunan, has been “proven to be used to treat Covid-19” and is already an “approved” drug. In an April 8 advisory, the FDA warned the public that no drug and vaccine has been licensed “specifically for use in Covid-19 treatment.” Roque cited the need to conduct a study about the effectiveness of Fabunan to stop confusion among individuals who think that

the drug can treat Covid-19. “Habang hindi ginagawa at hindi nagdedeklara ng ganiyan ang FDA, palaging madaming maniniwala na baka ito (Fabunan) na nga ang lunas (So long as there is no official declaration from FDA, many will still believe that it is the cure),” he said. “So sabi ko pagaralan na nga kung ano iyan at magkaroon na ng pronouncement ang FDA (So the FDA should study it and make a pronouncement).” Roque said there should be a scientific basis that Fabunan can be used for Covid-19 treatment or prevention. “Kinakailangan ay siyensiya pa rin ang umiral nang malaman natin kung iyan ba ay banta o mabuti sa kalusugan ng ating mga kababayan (There should be a scientific basis so we would know if it is good or bad for public health),” he

said. In a Facebook post on March 31, the Fabunan Medical Clinic clarified that the anti-viral injection is not commercially sold. Following the circulation of viral social media posts about the anti-viral injection, the clinic said Fabunan is used “exclusively by the Fabunan Medical Clinic and its doctors in the practice of their profession.” On Tuesday, Roque announced that Duterte is offering a PHP10-million reward to any Filipino who could develop a vaccine against Covid-19.

The President, he said, would also give the University of the Philippines - Philippine General Hospital a “substantial grant” to develop a vaccine. During his intervention at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations’ Plus Three Summit on April 15, Duterte said the Philippines is ready to join other countries in conducting clinical trials of Avigan, a Japanese anti-viral drug, for the potential treatment of Covid-19. More fresh fish now available at Lanao del Norte’s rolling stores TUBOD, Lanao del Norte -- More fish products will now be kept fresh when the “rolling stores” of the province of Lanao del Norte goes around the various communities throughout the province. The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Region 10 (BFAR-10) provided four (4) units of cooler boxes to the Provincial Government of Lanao del Norte on Thursday, April 23. Cotabato Light lends assistance to frontliners, communities

S THE country faces great challenges due to the current health crisis, AboitizPower distribution unit Cotabato Light and Power Company extends a muchneeded helping hand to aid its local communities. On April 21, the Cotabato Light team donated an array of medical supplies to equip frontliners at the Cotabato Regional and Medical Center (CRMC). These donations

came at a crucial time as the CRMC continues to serve as one of the region’s primary care centers amidst COVID-19. The items distributed include 8,000 surgical masks, 1,000 nitrile gloves, 9,000 surgical gloves, 371 safety goggles, 14 IR thermometers, 127 digital contact thermometers, and 12 liters of alcohol. “We are very grateful for the incredible work that our frontliners

willingly provide during these current times, and we at Cotabato Light and the Aboitiz Group are pleased to lend our full support in making sure that they are properly equipped with all they need,” said Cotabato Light President and Chief Operating Officer Valentin Saludes III. The frontliners serving at the medical center expressed their profound gratitude for the tremendous support towards the fight against the spread of COVID-19. “The support provided by Cotabato Light and the Aboitiz Foundation allowed us to remain responsive to the demands of the current public health emergency.
