2 security guards selling loose firearms busted By CRIS DIAZ Executive Editor

CAMP ALAGAR, Cagayan de Oro City: Two private security guards selling loose firearms were collared in an entrapment operations in Bukidnon, a police report reaching here said Friday. Lt Col. Randy T. Anito, of the Police Mobile Force Command in Bukidnon, reported that elements of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) posing as buyers nabbed the suspects and seized the unlicensed firearms. Anito identified the suspects as Merjon P. Balasta, 32, of Purok 4, Barangay Dumaluma and Rolando A. Galendez, 37, of Purok 6, Barangay Merangeran, all of Quezon, Bukidnon. It has also a 24” HD Max Display which could also convey a lifelike image display through its TrueVue Volume. It combines 3D and 4D imaging wherein it cannot be pixelated for it has 1.7 million pixels installed. The installation of this ultrasound machine was led by DR. Ferdinand Bautista, the Radiology Department Head, last March 22, 2021. Since the day of the installation, the machine delivered a consistent and accurate diagnosis to various patients in less time. The EPIQ Elite machine is expected to bring ultimate solutions to elevate the diagnostic service offered by the LNPH to the people of Lanao del Norte and even to nearby clients. WHEN my brother-in-law Archie was torn from the center of his and our life by a heart attack a few days ago, I was in shock. Not only me. The whole family. He was just 59. Minutes before his death, we kept on joking. The whole family had to accept it his sudden death, Have you ever wanted something so badly but you felt like you couldn’t do anything about it? How would you describe your state during those times? Archie is in heaven now. Sure. Thank you Lord. Chances are that you experienced one or more of these emotions: frustration, neediness, helplessness, powerlessness, irritation, desperation, anxiousness, nervousness, anxiety, and possibly depression. Before you beat yourself up for feeling this way, you should know that your feelings are perfectly normal. Most people experience inner turbulence whenever they feel unable to control an outcome that’s important to them. That’s because we dislike the unknown. We perceive the unknown as a threat to our survival. We tend to associate control with security and even power. Currently, things are in flux, but our response to

uncertainty hasn’t changed. We still have a need to try to control our environment. The possibility of losing a job or a business deal or being rejected by someone we fancy is not going to kill us, but we may feel as if it could. Accepting what we don’t like may be one of the most difficult aspects of life. To solve challenges, we normally try to take positive action and change what we can, but inevitably there will be people, situations, and events we don’t like and that we aren’t able to change. Do you find yourself trying to change things you have no control over? If so, you probably find it difficult to be satisfied and content with life. If we can’t change a situation or an outcome our best option is to learn how to accept it and deal with it. Acceptance is not the same as resignation or passivity. We can continue to push forward despite accepting that there are things beyond our control. Here are a few tips to living with greater acceptance so you can have more joy and peace of mind. We all have baggage that we carry from our past, and this baggage gets heavier

the longer we hold onto it. Many people have a hard time letting go of the past. We carry a mental reminder of our mistakes and losses with us everywhere we go, not realizing how much they steal from our present joy and contentment. We can’t change the past. What happened in your past happened, so our only hope is to learn how to accept our past and move forward. At one point or another life will present us with an unexpected turn of events. It may be a difficult loss or a failure of epic proportions that we aren’t prepared to deal with. Sometimes these events are beyond our current ability to cope. So, part of the acceptance process is learning new ways to cope with a crisis. Keep your emotions in check so you can make a more conscious decision about how to deal with a difficult situation. Pandemic Essentials: Breaking through bad money habits WHEN the government first implemented the Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) from March 17 to the end of May 2020, a study released by AdSpark, Inc.—a portfolio company under Globe Telecom’s 917Ventures—revealed that searches and media consumption on personal finance as a topic grew by 800% among Filipinos. Now that the National Capital Region (NCR) and adjacent areas are once again under ECQ, it wouldn’t be surprising if financial stress and recovery would be among the top most searched topics online, as more Filipinos feel the impact of the situation on their finances. The question in the minds of many would be: “How can we best manage our money during these uncertain times?” In a World Bank (WB) Policy Research Talk in 2017, Bilal Zia, an economist from the World Bank research department, gave an overview of a decade’s worth of research on what works and what doesn’t in boosting households’ financial capabilities. This includes financial education. This groundbreaking

research prompted WB and its partner countries to shift towards people-centric tools to improve the understanding and use of financial services and products. For the WB, “there is an unprecedented opportunity to use entertainment media to change the lives of billions of people, especially in urban areas. Entertainment education or edutainment can be a game-changer for development.” Following the WB recommendation, BPI Foundation, the social responsibility arm of the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI), launched a mobile game called “Breakthrough: The Financial Choices We Make.” This is the first-ofits-kind mobile gaming app that has the primary aim of educating Filipinos about personal finance while keeping them entertained. “Proper financial understanding helps us make better-informed decisions. IN the Bank’s Annual Stockholders’ Meeting held today virtually, BDO Unibank, Inc. (BDO) President Nestor V. Tan reported the Bank’s full year 2020 and first quarter 2021 results at P28.2 billion and P10.4 billion, respectively, on the back of the Bank’s resilient business franchise despite the continuing challenges brought by the COVID-19 pandemic. BDO demonstrated operational resilience and grew its balance sheet amid the difficult operating environment in 2020. Net income was lower vs. 2019, mainly due to pre-emptive provisions of P30.2 billion set aside against potential pandemic-induced delinquencies. However, the Bank’s pre-provisioning operating profit remained solid with 17 per cent Year-on-Year (YoY) growth over 2019. For the first three (3) months of 2021, net income was at P10.4 billion up by 19 per cent from a year-ago on the robust performance from service fee businesses

that compensated for the weak demand for loans. Loans dipped by one (1) per cent YoY to P2.2 trillion, while total deposits went up by two (2) per cent to P2.6 trillion, underpinned by the 11 per cent rise in CASA deposits, with the CASA ratio hitting a record 83 per cent. Non-interest income recovered driven by the strong performance of wealth management and life insurance businesses, as well as the normalization of trading and forex gains. Operating expenses were relatively flat compared to last year. The Bank set aside an additional P2.9 billion in provisions even as the 1Q21 NPL ratio of 2.81% remained within expectations, and is still below the three (3) per cent NPL ratio projected for end-2020. A safety seal tags establishments that strictly implement minimum health protocols in their stores and workplaces, such as proper wearing of face shields and face masks, good ventilation, disinfection, and using the contact tracing system of StaySafe.ph. The use of StaySafe.ph is mandatory for establishments that would like to apply for a safety seal certification program. “Through the safety seal certification, the government aims to increase public confidence in businesses at this time of the pandemic while also ensuring compliance in the minimum health protocols. This is because the signage of the safety seal —which affirms

that an establishment has been found compliant with these health protocols— will assure customers that it is safe to be in that establishment,” DTI Secretary Ramon Lopez said during a virtual presser. Learners under modular distance learning can also use other resources such as Learner’s materials, textbooks, activity sheets, study guides and other study materials. To maintain the education of millions of Filipino students, the government implemented a distance learning approach. The department of Education will be the one to provide and distribute the self learning modules to every student every week through their respective schools. They will have ample time to study and assess the modules before the start of weekly class. Students are expected to

complete the task and submit their outputs at the end of the week. Open communication between the teacher to students and/or teacher to parents/ guardians is also part of the norm. this is to ensure and monitor the progress of the students at home. Just the thought of studying at home gives students the eerie feeling of freedom and luxury of being less pressured. Morever, self love is a must, always think that you cannot give something that you do not have. Invest in yourself, do things that make you fully satiafied and happy. Fur-

thermore, have more time for yourself. Well, this might sound selfish but it is not wrong to have a selftime once in a while. Most of us may have a lot of responsibilites in work and at home. Most of us is a parent, a wife or a husband, a daughter or a son, an employee or an employer, a sister or a brother, a friend or a lover but these responsibilities will not be fulfilled if you didn’t give time for your self. The center of our life is ourself, a person can’t be a loving parent if self love is not there. So, take care of yourself as much as you take of your child, love yourself as much as you love your husband. A recent review of UNHCR’s socioeconomic assessments demonstrate the need and opportunity to improve the scope and quality of data collected ono education and bring these efforts in line with international good practices which are well established in this sector. Doing so will improve the comparability of refugee and displaced populations to nationals across settings and time in core areas like school enrollment and educational attainment. Such comparisons are currently not possible on a significant scale. Access to comparable data no both of these indicators are needed to achieve the objectives of the Global Compact on Refugees which emphasizes the inclusion of displaced populations in national systems. Being able to monitor

these indicators also enable measurement of progress towards the education-related indicators of the SDGs and UNHCR’s own results-based management framework. A module is a portion of such a curriculum. It is possible to envisage and implement cross curricular modules involving several school subjects, project modules (aimed at carrying out a particular project) as well as remedial or development modules. Modules are increasingly being used in many countries as a way of organizing a language curriculum. As a consequence, many course books are now structured on the basis of modules rather than units and most teachers, when faced with this innovation, wonder whether this is really a new development.

GETTING children back to school is crucial in the wake of natura disasters such as earthquakes, floods and typhoons. But education is also key in tackling the wider climate change crisis. The links may not be obvious at first glance. But they are clear and measurable. We need to educate people to adopt a culture of caring for the environment. It needs to be a permanent fixture of school and education. We need environmental literacy. If we do not know what the problem is, it will be impossible to solve it. As young people, we have the biggest stake in the future. We are the ones directly affected by it. We

need to learn right now, to have that curriculum in schools right now. It’s the little things that will make the difference. Our youth can make those changes very easily. We want to empower the public to get behind solutions. We think they will be more inspired to act if we educate them. You can’t not be educated on our planet. We are dependent upon it for our very survival. Education can address the threat of climate change by helping people understand the root causes and impact of climate change as well as shifting their behavior and attitudes towards more sustainable lifestyles.

Collaborative learning has been shown to not only develop higher-level thinking skills in students but boost their confidence and self-esteem as well. Students often need to learn how to work effectively with others and as part of a team. It gives the students time and opportunities within the activity to develop leadership, decision-making, trustbuilding, communication, and conflict-management skills. It also develops the students active listening skills. At some point, students will want to think or talk

seriously about seeking an ideal career path. By this, education is the one will help them realize on things they want to do on future. Teachers might help them picking that career and they will guide them though the process. In schools, the main goal is to produce a ton of students who will be pursuing their dreams and live with their dreams. Help them mold and prepare for the profession they choose and embrace it. Students should have people in their lives that challenges them and hold them accountable. These are the people who will offer questions and shares their experiences, those mentors and models. We’re talking about those who have gone before them, and can help them obtain the best of themselves. Mold their education and being able to gain knowledge that they needed.

to accept something when we explore the opportunities and possibilities that come out of it. What can you learn from your difficulty? How has your difficulty made you a stronger person? We live in a world that tells us to want more, be more, and do more. This isn’t always a negative message, but it often gets in the way of our life satisfaction. When something doesn’t meet our expectations, we are disappointed and angry. Life can appear purposeless, unfair, and ruthless if our expectations are unrealistic. So, instead of expecting something to happen, or expecting a person or event to act a certain way, try to focus on accepting and creating. Focus on what you want to create instead of what you expect to happen. Creation is motivating, expectation is demanding. When we run into failure or setbacks it can feel like we are stuck with nowhere to turn. Life will take unexpected turns and when this happens our trajectory might have to change as well. There is a point where it is in our best interest to move on and let go of what we want. If something doesn’t work the way we planned, don’t get caught up in the outcome. Instead of doing the same thing and expecting different results, accept things aren’t working the way you planned and do something different. You may not be able change what you’re going through right now, but this doesn’t mean you can’t live a full and meaningful life. You can adapt and adjust to your present circumstances. Stop avoiding difficult issues and only focusing on what you can’t change. Focus on what you can do about the situation, and if you can’t change something it’s time to accept this reality. Ask yourself, “What do I need to accept so that I can be happier and more fulfilled?” Adopting a spiritual outlook provides a psychological cushion to cope with our perceived lack of control. It comforts us with the notion that there is a divine order behind everything that occurs in life and that there’s a reason why things happen the way that they do. It’s reassuring to know that there’s a benevolent force that’s got our back and supports our personal evolution. Nothing good has ever come from worrying. It induces anxiety and is a major energy drainer. Whenever you worry, you operate from the frequency of fear, which will immobilize you. If we’re not careful, we can go down a tailspin of “what if?” loops and scary visions of all the possible things that could go wrong. The only way we can get out of this rabbit hole is by letting go of our fears and worries and replacing them with optimism, faith in the future, and probably learn-

ing better coping skills with a licensed therapist. Anxiety caused by the excessive need to control circumstances will wear down your mental energy and focus. You can regain power by surrendering your control over a situation. You’ll realize that although you have no way of controlling the events or people involved in a certain situation, you do have control over how you feel and how you react. Based on what you know, you can create a plan and proactively follow through with it. You’ll feel more empowered knowing that you’ve done the best you could and you’re open to all possible outcomes. Letting go of control is, essentially, an act of faith whether spiritual or otherwise. Faith can get us through foggy times of uncertainty and help us navigate through the dark valleys where we can’t see where we’re heading. Faith will illuminate our path and lead us down to our destiny if we allow it to. My neutral attitude toward the country, the Philippines I lived in gradually made me see a more balanced view of it and eventually, appreciate the positive aspects. I noticed, for example, that the town Davao City had beautiful parks and ponds, and that some people living there were interesting and kind. Developing understanding and acceptance opened the doors for a change. As I became more openminded and happier within the years, I started noticing and acting on new opportunities. For example, I came across information about how to start my own working life and thus acted on it. This non-resisting attitude made me dissolve some of the limits of my mind and thus I became more intuitive. This intuition eventually led me to the country where I felt most at home - Philippines. If I had never learned this lesson of non-resistance, I would probably still be stuck somewhere somehow, cursing my situation to this day. Wherever you are and whatever you experience, try to be at peace with it. If it’s hard to think positively about your situation, at least don’t focus on the negatives, and instead focus on something you’d like to experience. It may help to make a list of things you’re grateful for and the positive aspects of whatever you resist. Focus on those aspects completely, and soon your mind will

This shift in focus will eventually open the door to circumstances that are more empowering and positive. Diosdado Labaso, chairman of Samahan ng Mangingisda sa Lianga (Samal), said aside from the destruction of mangroves, the coastal road project also affected the breeding place and habitat of seagrass and different kinds of shellfish at the seashore near the Sabang river. Several century-old Pagatpat mangrove near the dumped area have already died and some others were dying. Some 1,600 Catholic parishioners, sent a petition on Dec. 20, 2018, to the Department of the Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to stop the project, but so far Environment Secretary Roy Cimatu has not acted on it. “A road project is good if only they planned it accordingly that it will not affect their livelihood and marine life,” Labaso said adding that around 50 percent of the shellfish breading place were already destroyed when the seashore were dumped with limestone for the coastal road project. For his part, town councilor Samuel Dollano the coastal road project has destroyed the most diverse ecosystem found within the Lianga Bay shoreline. He recalled former environment secretary Angel Alcala once told him that coastal ecosystem conservation to ridges in the forest to the bottoms of Pacific Ocean since Lianga Bay has the most diverse ecosystem that cannot be found elsewhere in the country. He also took a swipe on the bypass road project which he said was implemented without consulting the town council and has not complied the basic requirements like environmental impact assessment before it was issued by DENR with Environmental Compliance Certificate (ECC). “The bypass road truly lived up to its name since it really bypassed all the requirements of the ECC,” Dollano said.
