DOT-10 exec: Camiguin, top eco-tourism destination

THE Task Force Bangon Marawi (TFBM) on Friday said residents of Marawi are in favor of the government’s plan to build a military camp in Marawi City. TFBM spokesperson and Office of the Civil Defense Assistant Secretary Kristoffer James Purisma made this clarification following reports that local residents are opposing the creation of a military camp as part of the city’s reconstruction plan. “Based on feedback we got from consultation with our brothers, they are in favor of military camp because we must remember that we need security measures for most affected area,” Purisma said in a Bangon Marawi press briefing in Malacanang. Purisima said the task force has been conducting series of consultations with the residents to get their suggestions on how to rebuild Ms. Irene S. A TOURISM official in Northern Mindanao clarified that Camiguin has a different positioning compared to Boracay, contrary to a news article that said not much should be expected from the “laid back” province. Department of Tourism (DOT 10) Regional Director Marie Elaine S. Unchuan was reacting to an article by Cagayan de Oro reporter Mark Francisco titled “Camiguin ain’t no Boracay, don’t expect too much: DOT executive” published in Mindanao Daily News and several other outlets on April 16.

In her statement posted on the Facebook page of DOT 10 on April 19, Unchuan said, “while Boracay is a beach destination with a party atmosphere, Camiguin is a top eco-tourism destination that boasts of sites like the ASEAN Heritage mountains like the Mt. Timpoong Hibokhibok, waterfalls, cold springs, hot springs, the famous White Island Sand Bar, Mantigue Island Marine Sanctuary and a unique soda water spring among others that can only be found on the island.” She said the DOT regional office is happy with

Congressman XJ Romualdo’s offer of Camiguin as a summer destination alternative while Boracay is closed to the public starting April 26. It highlights the cooperation of the local government units (LGUs) and the private sector in this campaign, she added. Unchuan expressed dismay and disappointment that Mr. Francisco did not even bother to adhere to the basic rules of ethics in reporting. “He came out with an article that was totally inaccurate and fabricated – with many statement attributions See top, page 11

Govt’s health insurance programs benefit poor Filipino children: study FILIPINO children from poor households who are part of the government’s health insurance program have increased access to health care, both for preventive and curative care. A recent study published by state think tank Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) recognized the role that the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps)

has played in this positive impact. The 4Ps automatically enrolls beneficiaries to the country’s social health insurance program and requires preventive check-ups for children aged 0 to 5 years old. In the discussion paper, authors PIDS Senior Research Fellow Michael Abrigo and Visiting Research Fellow Vicente Paqueo explained that, while

there is no direct impact on morbidity, the results suggest that “the social health insurance and the CCT program, jointly, were able to induce greater hospital visits for both preventive and curative care, and lower out-of-pocket expenditures.” Access to health care in developing countries Homemade Sniper Rifles.
