The heavy encounter lasted 40 minutes before the NPA rebels retreated from their position and fled to different directions. As of Sunday noon, the Army troopers have recovered from the encounter site four bodies of suspected NPA rebels. DA-SAAD NorMin allots P775k OPV corn seeds to 2,048 farmers, Philippine Army CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Special Area for Agricultural Development (SAAD) Program of the Department of Agriculture (DA) in Northern Mindanao allotted P775,000 worth of open pollinated variety (OPV) white corn seeds to 18 SAAD-adopted towns and the Philippine Army. The 1,125 bags OPV corn seeds agri intervention is part of the priority agri-livelihood of DA-SAAD to the 2,048 corn farmers from the provinces of Bukidnon, Lanao del Norte and Misamis Occidental in Region 10 for the cultivation of their 1,125 hectares corn areas. Meanwhile, the 8th Infantry

Battalion (8th IB) of the Philippine Army is allocated with 100 bags corn seeds to support its community livelihood projects in conflict-affected areas in the region. The procured corn seeds are part of the DA-SAAD Region 10 Corn Production project in 2020. DA- 10 Regional Technical Director for Operations Carlota S. Madriaga said, OPV corn seeds require less yieldboosting inputs, thus helping farmers minimize their production cost. You need to pinpoint the agricultural assistance needed by our farmers, especially in this pandemic. Propose the desired projects, so that we will be able to allocate the required funding,” Collado called unto the local agriculturists. “As food security frontliners, we need to stay active in mobilizing assistance needed by our farmers amid the uncertainties of this crisis. We need to ensure food security,” he stressed. For her part, Letecia G. Ditucalan, Lanao del Norte’s Provincial Agriculturist said, the warehouse will be optimally utilized to secure the farmers’ seeds, providing them proper

storage facility. “We are grateful of DA-10 for granting us this project. We dream of this facility to resemble DA-10’s research center. The construction of this warehouse is a step closer to that dream,” Ditucalan accounted. In 2021, Lanao del Norte will be granted another agri infrastructure project from DA-10 for the construction of a P10 million Cold Storage in Lala, Lanao del Norte. “This facility is of great help in protecting our farmers’ seeds, machineries and equipment. However, to help solve our farmers’ problems we need to think outside the box, work together, and go the extra mile in serving our farming constituents,” Audy G. Pandemic and religiousness

HOW do you survive this time of new lockdowns and their restrictions, and daily news that only have one topic: Corona, Corona, Corona? One of the most important parts in my life is the belief in supernatural power which governs the universe. Maybe, because I was born and raised in a parish house in Germany. It doesn’t matter which religion we belong to or believe in: the recognition of God as an object of worship, the form of worship should be our primary need. Sad to say, more and more people get another opinion nowadays. Criticizing people, who are praying more especially now, hurts me. During my stay in several Western countries before this pandemic, I experienced icy and conceited comments such as religiousness isn’t popular any more. Religiousness makes people unwilling and morose because of exaggeration and sometimes even hypocrisy. How come? We want to see the religiousness of our fellow creatures. We want to understand their ideology.

But we are also poking our nose into other people’s business too much. Let’s look behind the scenes and let’s find out what religious behavior promotes: humility in actual life. Maybe. It’s hard for us to do without affecting others. We even forget the real meaning of religiousness. St. John Crysostom subscribed to the topic “Pagans and Christians” very well: “There would be no pagans if we were good Christians. But the pagans see us manifesting the same desires, pursuing the same objects - power and honor - as themselves, how can they admire Christianity?” They see our lives open to reproach and our souls worldly. We admire wealth equally with them and even more. How, then, can they believe? From miracles? But these are no longer wrought. From our conversion? It has become corrupt. From charity? surroundings who taught me how to be on the right track - unconcerned and unnoticed. Natural and uninhibited, they showed me how to put real religiousness into action besides praying and going regularly to church. I call such people religious. I mean it as praise because they don’t like to blow their trumpets while acting as Christians in our daily life. Having such people around us makes it easier to stay strong and to overcome loneliness and missing all the good things, we are no more allowed to do. Tech luxury in the new normal MORE than the Covid-19 scare, now in a global scale, we are in for a big trouble with our mobile phones— subconsciously, or otherwise. And to go offline is the new luxury these days of digital addiction. Inde e d, t ime have changed. Gone are the days when bondings are most common among friends, or members of the family for that matter. And it comes with a price, even in popular celebrations — like the forthcoming Yuletide frenzy — where we are ‘silenced’ by our mobile phones! Like it or not, mobile phones are now part of our lifestyles such that we have become immobile without these high tech gadgets. The truth of the matter is, we are now ‘addicted’ by our constant use of cell phones -- calling, texting, emailing , FB browsing, among other things. And so these troubling questions: Are mobile phones have become too much of a good thing? Are you in panic attack when you forget your phone? Mobile phones have

become man’s best friends nowadays, yet for all we know, we are now entrapped subconsciously by the many ‘good things’ our mobile phones have been providing us. Mobile phones are one of the phenomenal inventions of man in this era of tech-driven society. It completely changed the way we interact these days. You can call, send text messages, read emails, play games as well as read and edit documents on the go. Almost everyone has a mobile phone. Everywhere you go, we see people sporting the latest mobile phone models. Mobile phones has become part and parcel of our lives. Leaving home without our phones is akin to leaving without brushing our teeth, or combing our hair. These days of quickies, everyone owns at least one, if not sophisticated, mobile phone. In fact, even parents have allowed their school kids to own mobile phones because of easy and convenient access wherever they are, anytime, anywhere. So what are the re-

We are reduced to interacting on social platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, Instagram, or chat applications such as Viber and WhatsApp. While there is nothing expressly wrong with chatting with our friends on these platforms, it can be a problem if it is done at the expense of face to face interaction. In a family where every member has a mobile phone and uses it every time they are together, this might cause breakdown of relationships, or worse, disorientation of values within the family. MANILA – Malacañang on Sunday assured that prices of basic goods and commodities remain stable and within prevailing prices amid the onslaught of Super Typhoon Rolly. In a press conference, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) will conduct regular monitoring to apprehend unscrupulous retailers. “Ayon sa DTI (according to the DTI), generally price and supply of basic necessities and price commodities remain stable,” Roque said. He said the DTI is also monitoring to ensure that suggested retail price will be followed particularly in areas to be heavily affected by “Rolly”. Roque, meanwhile, issued a warning against retailers taking advantage of the typhoon to jack up the prices of basic goods and commodities. Meanwhile, Department of Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said that individuals and staff from affected temporary treatment and monitoring facilities (TTMFs) were likewise evacuated and transferred to other COVID-19 isolation facilities. Secretary Duque also assured that logistical support amounting to more than P26 million worth of drugs, medicines, medical supplies, health kits, including PPEs and other COVID-19 supplies have been prepositioned. Duque added that hospitals were already alerted to have critical life-saving equipment ready, and that health

emergency response teams are on standby. Duque also reminded LGU officials to assign safety officers in evacuation centers and limit the number of people in evacuation areas if possible, in light of the COVID-19 situation. On the part of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Undersecretary Felicisimo Budiongan affirmed that the department has standby funds and stockpiles worth 884 million that includes stockpiles like family food packs, other food items, and non-food items. Usec. Budiongan said that the DSWD and all its quick response teams in field and central offices are on standby and on-call and are ready to provide augmentation with LGUs. Cash-for-Work Program with Department of Tourism and Department of Labor & Employment DEPARTMENT of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat and Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Secretary Silvestre H. Bello III last Friday (October 30) signed the DOT-DOLE Joint Memorandum Circular (JMC) No. 2020-001, which contains specific guidelines for the provision of cash assistance and cash-for-work program for tourism workers that were displaced due to the ongoing pandemic. “Our tourism workers make up the life support system of the tourism industry. We are sincerely grateful to Secretary Bello and the DOLE for prioritizing our displaced tourism workers. We likewise thank our legislators for the enactment of the BAYANIHAN 2 law that will enable us to help our stakeholders regain economic strength giving renewed vigor to our industry and to our country. This financial assistance scheme and Cash-for-Work Program will prove once more that our government stands firm with the people,” enthused Secretary Puyat. Employees of DOT-accredited tourism enterprises and local government unit (LGU)-licensed primary tourism enterprises that have retrenched its workforce or undergone temporary or permanent closure will be eligible to apply for the cash-for-work program, or avail of a one-time financial assistance equivalent to PHP 5,000. The amount will be sourced from the Php 3 billion allocation for tourism workers under Section 4 of Republic Act 11494 or the Bayanihan to Recover As One (BAYANIHAN 2). Members of duly registered Community-Based Tourism Organizations (CBTOs) that were affected by the pandemic are likewise qualified to avail of the cash assistance and apply for the cash-for-work program. According to the tourism chief, displaced employees of 7,951 DOT-accredited primary tourism enterprises and an estimated 8,433 LGU-licensed primary tourism enterprises are set to benefit from the program. “With the joint effort and cooperation of the DOT and DOLE, we will work our best to carry our tourism industry workforce across these tides,” she added. Meanwhile, the JMC also provides guidelines on how to avail of the cash assistance for distressed DOT-accredited or LGUlicensed Tour Guides, out of the PHP 100 million allocation under BAYANIHAN 2. A tour guide may be entitled to avail of the onetime financial assistance or cash-for-work program, provided he/she is a member of a tour guide organization or association that has been registered with a relevant

Many people say that words and numbers cannot unite. They think that when words and numbers meet, they get more confused. They take the collision of words and numbers as something that can bring disasters to their brains. An evidence of this is a student who said, “Numbers and words combined are killing me!” for this student, it is not easy to say or write the number name of the number 576, 354, 691, 222, 333. 006. Indeed, there are situations when numbers combined with words become frustrating to many students or even the parents as the salient support of the

students’ learning. The foregoing matter demonstrates that mathematics is perceived by some people as difficult and confusing when it comes with words. Nonetheless, the situations that bring confusions or difficulties to some people, particularly the students, cannot be avoided as mathematics is expressed in words. Language or words and mathematics come in tandem in discipline. No mathematics subject is ever done without words. Mathematical processes are explained by words. Solutions of problems involving numbers are facilitated in words. Mathematical probabilities are understood

through words. In oral communication, numbers reach one as words. The number 358 is heard as three hundred fifty-eight. The women in the town of General SK Pendatun continue the tradition by creating woven bags made out of dried water hyacinth. The water hyacinth weaving has helped them provide for the daily needs of their families and support the education of their children. Water Hyacinth is a readily available raw material in the lakes and rivers within the province. Inaul which is a Maguindanaon word for “woven” is a traditional cloth commonly used as wraparound skirts by both men and women. To keep the Inaul tradition alive, the local government of Maguindanao created the Inaul Festival to showcase the use of the traditional loom in different forms of art, medium and in contemporary fashion. Inaul weaver Bai Hainon Odin Abdullah who is based in the municipality of Sultan Kudarat supports her family by selling Inaul that she, her mother and siblings make. “Kilala ang pamilya namin na gumagawa ng Inaul pero dahil sa pandemic nahihirapan na kaming magbenta sa tindahan,” shares Bai Hainon. [Our family is known for Inaul weaving but because of the pandemic, it’s hard to sell it in the shops.] Bai Hainon had to figure out different ways to bring in money for her family. Cebu Pacific extends flexible booking options for passengers Two-year travel Fund and unlimited rebooking now covers travels until Dec. 31, 2020 LEADING Philippine carrier Cebu Pacific (CEB) extends the coverage of its flexible booking options for passengers traveling until December 31, 2020, allowing everyjuan to travel with peace of mind. “We continue to listen to our passengers so we may also continuously review and improve our processes to better address everyjuan’s concerns. As such, we are pleased to share that we have extended our options to cover flights until end of this year, to give our passengers more flexibility when it comes to scheduling their travels,” said Candice Iyog, CEB VP for Marketing & Customer Experience. Travel Fund valid for two (2) years The Travel Fund, valid

for two (2) years, can be used to book flights up to 12 months ahead, given that transactions are done before the fund expires. This means customers can use their Travel Funds to book trips potentially until 2023. This virtual wallet will consist of the full cost of the ticket, and can be used not only for flights, but even for purchasing ancillaries, such as baggage allowance and seat blocking. This option is a great alternative for passengers who do not have fixed travel dates yet. Customers with existing Travel Funds should not fret as the two-year validity will be applied retroactively, or from the date the fund was created. Unlimited rebooking of flights

Customers will still be able to avail of unlimited rebooking of their flights, without paying any rebooking or change fees. Those who wish to postpone travel plans may opt to rebook their flights as many times as possible, allowing passengers to better manage their plans, considering the fluidity of the situation. A minimal fare difference may apply. Options for passengers with cancelled flights Those with cancelled flights will continue to have the following options: placing the full cost of the ticket in a Travel Fund valid for two years; rebooking flights with no limit - both rebooking fee and fare difference are waived if new travel date is within 90 days; or availing of a full refund.

Passengers are encouraged to choose their options and conveniently manage their bookings online through the “Manage Booking” portal in the Cebu Pacific website. Simply log-in to your Getgo account, if applicable; or enter the Booking Reference to access the booking online and easily make desired changes. Bookings can be modified up to two (2) hours before the flight. “Rest assured we remain optimistic for the industry, and look forward to the day #EveryJuanWillFlyAgain,” added Iyog. Everyjuan now has the ability to easily update their contact information and addresses through the same portal. Those who booked their CEB flights via travel agencies must coordinate requests through their re-
