Environment watchdog on Trudeau’s promise to address garbage issue: ‘We’re watching you’ ENVIRONMENTAL justice group BAN Toxics yesterday welcomed Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s commitment to find a solution to the Canadian waste that has been sent to the Philippines in 2013. “We appreciate Prime Minister Trudeau’s pronouncement that he will address the garbage issue. It’s about time that he brings it back home with him to Canada,” Anna Kapunan, BAN Toxics’ Campaign and Advocacy Specialist said. “Prime Minister Trudeau, we are watching you. We will set a meeting immediately with the Canadian embassy so that you do good on your promise. As we have always said, Filipino lives matter too. We don’t want our countrymen to suffer from the health and environmental impacts of your trash,” Kapunan added. Earlier today, Trudeau said that he has committed to President Rodrigo Duterte that his government will work on finding a solution to the garbage issue. In mid-2013, Canada sent 103 container vans with

1,300-ton of trash declared as recyclable materials. The vans contained household wastes, diapers, among others. Today is the first time that Trudeau committed to take action on the Canadian waste that has been rotting in the Port of Manila for years. “I know it has been a long-standing irritant and I committed to him (Duterte),

and I’m happy to commit to all of you now that Canada is very much engaged in finding a solution on that,” Trudeau said in a press conference at the World Trade Center in Manila. New Zealand, UN-FAO, PH renew partnership for Peace, devt in Mindanao MANILA – Rt Hon Winston Peters, Deputy Prime Minister of New Zealand and Minister of Foreign Affairs announced that New Zealand has earmarked US$2.5 million to support agricultural development and food security in Mindanao. The New Zealand assistance will fund a project that aims to reach at least 3,000 farming families in Maguindanao and Cotabato provinces. It will build on the gains of the efforts by New Zealand and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in collaboration with the Government of the Philippines to restore the agricultural livelihoods of communities affected by armed conflict, drought and floods in the provinces of Cotabato, Maguindanao and Lanao del Sur from 2015 to 2017. “Agriculture sits at the heart of the development opportunity in Mindanao. Half of the Philippines’ agri-businesses are located in Mindanao. An efficient agricultural sector will enable Mindanao to fulfill its reputation as the food basket of the Philippines. The Mindanaoan economy and the health of its people depend on agricultural success.” Rt. Hon. Peters said. The project will include the improvement of productivity, food and nutrition security and resilience of smallholders through the provision of farming inputs, agricultural machinery, post-harvest facilities and training, among others. Farmer organizations would also be integrated into the value chain through skills development and market linkages. Another key component of the project is equipping communities with disaster risk reduction and management tools and increasing their knowledge of

approaches that consider agro-ecological and socio-political-institutional contexts. “New Zealand’s contribution to FAO’s work in the country in recent years has resulted in more than 52,000 farming and fishing households receiving the assistance that they needed to rebuild their lives and livelihoods and become more resilient to future threats," said José Luis Fernández, FAO Representative in the Philippines. "The new project will provide vulnerable communities with the means to establish micro and agribusiness enterprises that can compete in new and existing markets, and also become more proactive in dealing with natural and humaninduced disasters. With improved yields, increased incomes and resilience, they will have better chances to break the cycle of poverty and food insecurity,” Fernandez added. New Zealand and FAO cooperation The New Zealand Aid Programme is managed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. MFAT has funded FAO projects globally, supporting economic and human development, improving resilience and responding to disasters, and building safe and secure communities. In the Philippines, FAO has implemented several New Zealand-funded projects between 2011 and 2017. CAGAYAN de Oro City-Residents of a barangay here are clamoring for the northernmost portion of Corrales Extension to be opened. In an interview over Magnum Radyo, Macabalan Barangay Chair Norbel Saa said his constituents are already complaining that the closure of Corrales Extension from Vicente Mendoza Street to Julio Pacana Street have caused heavy traffic in the area every day. Saa said container vans going to the Port of Cagayan de Oro and to the dozens of warehouses along Julio Pacana Street crammed in one street have caused undue clog.

In late May, Mayor Oscar Moreno issued an executive order authorizing the indefinite closure of the block for security reason, because along the road sits the biggest depot of Pilipinas Shell in Mindanao. Families displaced by clashes get aid CARMEN, North Cotabato --- The local government, through the town’s social welfare and development office, on Tuesday extended assistance to some 210 families displaced by military air strikes on suspected positions of an ISIS-inspired armed group over the weekend in a mountain village here.

The families fled to safer grounds after the Army’s 6th Infantry Division conducted two bombing sorties Saturday in the villages of Tonganon and Bentangan where the group of Esmael Abdulmalik, alias Commander “Abu Torayfe,” leader of a faction of Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF), was sighted.

Carmen Mayor Roger Taliño, in a statement, said the municipal social welfare office had extended rice, canned goods and other non-food items while the displaced families stay in the village of Lawili in nearby Aleosan town. The Army also extended help to the affected families and assured them they will

be safe from military action aimed at neutralizing the lawless elements. Army Capt. Napoleon Alcarioto, 602nd Infantry Brigade Civil Military Operations (CMO) chief, said aside from Carmen, the local government of Aleosan also extended assistance to the affected families. The ISIS-inspired group

has been the subject of massive military operations in Maguindanao’s second district and, according to Army intelligence reports, has moved to North Cotabato to evade the combined forces of the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF). Under the GPH-MILF peace agreement forged in

2007, the MILF will provide intelligence information to government forces on the presence of lawless elements and terrorists in areas identified with the MILF. The speakers discussed at length the various forms and types of illegal drugs, their street names, the effects of the drugs to the human body, the laws concerning their proliferation and use, and the punishments regarding the distribution and consumption of illegal narcotics. Another batch of pawikan hatchlings released in the Cleanergy Park Just three weeks after the release of the new set of pawikan hatchling, another batch of baby pawikans was set out to the sea at the Cleanergy Park in Sitio Punta Dumalag, Matina Aplaya Davao City last November 10, 2017. A total of 70 baby pawikans were released, giving a total number of 1,023 hatchlings released for the year. These baby sea turtles came from the 7th nest discovered last September 14, 2017 at the Cleanergy Park. Present during the release were the Davao

Its dissolved oxygen has though been slightly higher at 3.2mg/L compared to the EMB limit of 2 mg/L. On November 9, Dahino visited the area. She has yet to make a report to her committee on environment and natural resources about the new findings. Nacario sounded the alarm bells last October before the committee, stating aloud his observation of the alleged fishkill.
