CAGAYAN de Oro City-The P4 billion 12.8-kilometer coastal highway, bypass road here was formally opened to the commuters and pedestrians Friday afternoon, traffic officials said.

Engr. Nonito Oclarit, the deputy head of the roads and traffic administration

here, said that the newly opened coastal highway would serve as a bypass road from the coastal village of Gusa to Igpit in Opol, Misamis Oriental.

Oclarit said that the coastal highway would certainly decongest the traffic in the city’s major thoroughfare along Claro M. Recto Avenue here.

“Traffic congestion is

one of the problems here during peak hours of the day and the opening of the bypass road was a relief,” Oclarit said.

The P 4 billion coastal highway was one of the flagship projects of former Congressman Rufus Rodriguez three years ago.

BPO revenues are expected to outpace remittances from overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) by 2018, thanks in part to the rise of New Wave Cities.

The Philippines has been the world leader in the BPO industry since 2010, surpassing India in the global ranking. As of 2015, there were already 1.2 million Filipinos employed in the BPO sector compared to an estimated 2.4 million OFWs working anytime during the period April to September, 2015.

In 2014, the country’s BPO $18.9B BPO earnings were still overshadowed by the $24.6B OFW remittances in 2014, comprising almost 10 percent of the country’s GDP. But revenues from the

BPO sector would very likely to outpace remittances from OFWs by 2018,Joey Cuyegkeng, ING Bank Manila senior economist, said during a recent press conference on the bank’s global economic outlook.

Cuyegkeng said this was possible because BPO revenues are seen to grow at an average of 9 percent yearly toward 2022.

According to the 2022 Roadmap of the IT-Business Processing Association of the Philippines (iBPAP), the BPO sector is expected to generate $40 billion in revenues, 7.6 million direct and indirect jobs, 500,000 jobs outside of the National Capital Region, and cover 15 percent of the total global outsourcing market by the end of 2022.

OFW remittances may generate the projected $66.7 billion by 2022, but Cuyegkeng said the 9 percent growth of the BPO sector is double the pace of the projected 4 percent

yearly growth in OFW remittances from 2017 to 2022.

UREAU of Customs-Cagayan de Oro (CDO) (BOC-CDO) Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service (CIIS) officer-in-charge Intelligence Officer 2 Alvin Enciso yesterday denied earlier reports that the 45-year-old Roy Etulle Ancajas was a member of the Customs Police.

In a statement, Enciso said: “It was reported that last November 9, Ancajas was found lying unconscious in a ditch, and later reported to have died. It was believed that he might have been involved in an exchange of gunfire with customs broker Joed Pasasadaba.”

He said: “Based on our investigation, we discovered that Ancajas is not a member of the Customs Police nor is he an employee of the bureau.”

“We have also checked with the Customs Police and our administration/ personnel and learned that there was no BOC employee bearing the name Roy Ancajas,” he added.

The Customs Police ID that was recovered from the crime scene was also fake.

But while the identification card was bogus, the BOC would still look into how Ancajas obtained a Customs Police ID and for what purpose.

The alleged signatory on the ID was Special Agent II Pedro Amante Jr., who is the Enforcement Security Service (ESS) administration officer.

The Customs Police ID should have been signed by the ESS commander. The Customs Police is a unit under the ESS. In the Philippine National Police (PNP) Incident Record Form,

used since there were eight pieces of empty cartridges found at the crime scene.

They also recovered a G-Shock brand blackcolored wristwatch, one light blue-colored sling bag, and one green-colored packed bag containing several documents.

The body of Ancajas

was brought to the Bollozos Funeral Homes in Bulua, Cagayan de Oro City.

According to news reports, Ancajas might have exchanged gunfire with alleged customs broker Joed Pasasadaba in Barangay Macasandig.

Pasasadaba was taken to the JR Borja General Hospital for medical treatment after he allegedly suffered five

gunshot wounds.

Meanwhile, Pasasadaba’s driver Segfried Roxas was reportedly arrested by the police.

Roxas reportedly helped the authorities in recovering two .45 caliber pistols with live bullets in a grassy area near the crime scene.

The authorities are still determining the other facts that led to the shooting incident.

admitted that the Metropac has started to control the Rio Verde operation two years ago.

In the past weeks, the people in Cagayan De Oro have been made to believe (although many have already suspected) that the Metropac has nothing to do with the Rio Verde. The controversy goes off hand when the COWD and its officials signed a contract with Metropac as the new bulk water provider at a higher than the existing rate charged by the Rio Verde.

The Rio Verde charged only P 10.45 per cubic meter of the bulk water, it has been supplying to the COWD since 2007.

The new contract reportedly provides that the Metropac would supply 1 million liters daily (MLD) bulk water to COWD at a cost of P 16.00. The Cagayanons have expressed the alarm that the new rates would be passed on to the city’s water concessionaires.

Of course, that would be the case. In a city where poverty remains a stigma,

another round of water or power rate increase would certainly invite protest and mass actions.

Metro Manila Development Authority @ 42 On his very first speech during an MMDA anniversary, Chairman Danilo Lim, who has been on the job only for the last 5 months, could not hide his amazement at how complex the MMDA’s responsibilities have become.

The MMDA evolved from the Metro Manila Authority (MMA) which, in turn, originated from the Metro Manila Commission (MMC).

The MMDA performs planning, monitoring and coordinative functions involving Metro-wide services within Metro Manila.

These services include development planning, transport and traffic management, solid waste disposal and management, flood control and sewerage management, urban renewal, health and public safety.

But, according to Lim, the situation in Metro Manila today is very different.

The problems of the large metropolis have since magnified.

Metro Manila – which embraces 16 cities and one municipality – is now practically exploding with a population of close to

thirteen million, which, in turn, produces 11,000 tons of garbage daily.

Close to a hundred new cars are added daily to the 2.5 million registered vehicles, not to mention to the thousands more which come from nearby provinces.

And yet resources allocated for MMDA have remained flattish through the years.

Roads and thoroughfares have not been expanded.

Manpower has stayed at around 10,000. Equipment have not caught up even with MMDA’s basic requirements.

YES, nowadays, for many of us life is indeed an emotional roller coaster. All over the world. Political instability, wars, terror attacks, climate change with extreme natural disasters, questionable global economical situations, illnesses or diseases....

A day starts with traffic jams and continues with terrible conditions at the workplace. The crab mentality seems to become nothing unusual now. In any case: everyone for himself. Each one by himself/ herself/itself alone is quite nice, but together...? We have a problem? So what!

It’s not everyone’s cup of tea.

Well, sweet words might be easy to say; nice things are easy to buy; but good people are different to find.

Life ends, when you stop dreaming; hope ends, when you stop believing; friendship stops, when you stop sharing. A good friend of

mine sent me this quotation. I commented back: So very true and very well said!

Our life is borrowed - from God. No rental charges are collected from us. Many of us have forgotten this and live life at his fullest. Our life is equal to a book from a library that lends one. But, how insatiable and unbearable are we in disdainful acting towards life and therefore to ourselves?

Life seems to be nothing, just being ready to riddle one with bullets. Life seems to be nothing, just being broken through the indifference and unreliable and immoral behavior. Life seems to be nothing for those people who don’t understand cries from the heart of other people around them - cries of their hearts and families, for justice and for many other things.

Life with all its ups and

downs, is just a loan, but for many of our fellow creatures it just seems to be nonsense to be littered like a dump. And, if people try to survive, especially during these days, and if they just experienced (once more!) indifference, arrogance, ignorance or cheating by whomever - they will give up!

I can assure you that every one of us can at first help in prayers and, in reading the bible. “Proverbs” is the probably most down-toearth book in the bible. Its teachings prepare you for the daily life, the street and the marketplace, but not for the schoolroom. The book offers warm pieces of advice you get; practical guidance for making your way on earth. Proverbs covers any kinds of questions you might have right now.

Anybody can relate to the generalities of Proverbs, because this book simply

While writing this piece, I observed that more and m ore p e opl e st r u g g l e through life: tired, hopeless, experiencing their rock-bottoms, believing in fallacious “people” around them. I also observed a lot of people living a thief ’s life, as if it has given them without limitation.

CAGAYAN de Oro City--Being the nearest region to damaged Marawi City, the Northern Mindanao regional office of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) will play a key role in the rehabilitation of key infrastructure facilities there.

Public Works and Highways Secretary Mark Villar made this clear on Friday as he inaugurated two huge projects – the Cagayan de Oro coastal highway and Igpit bridge, part of the broader Laguindingan airport access widening.

Villar ordered the DPWH 10 office under director Virgilio Eduarte to assist the agency’s

central office and its counterpart in the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (Armm) while reconstructing the torn city.

The first accomplishment of the agency will be the November 25 completion of the road network leading to the resettlement site of people displaced in the five-month war against Islamic State-inspired Maute terrorists.

On Thursday, the DPWH has just received P195 million from the 2017 National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Fund as initial coverage of its Marawi City rehabilitation.

This, even as a Mindanao State University (MSU) based think tank had released a proposal covering P67 million for the infrastructure rehabilitation

there.

Earlier estimates by the government put the amount at P50 million.

In the MSU Technical Working Group proposal, there must be a comprehensive reconstruction of all government facilities that were damaged in the battle that started in May and ended last month.

Handicraft maker from Agsur made it to Manila FAME

Liza Maynagcot, owner of Liza’s Palm Strips Handicraft was Manila FAME’s Editor’s Choice Award 1st Series winner. Her winning products were designed by Gina Catuburan-Bagasbas, a

native of Bunawan and now a member of Caraga’s pool of regional designers of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).

The award, which was signed by Blair Villanueva, CITEM Chief Content Manager ,was given for “design that symbolizes an untouched beauty of a Filipina: classic and timeless. Each weave expresses strength, loyalty and being resilient – characters that make us more proud of our culture.”

Maynagcot hails from the Municipality of Trento.

She was one of two producers from the province of Agusan del Sur to be featured in the Mindanao One Pavilion at the Manila FAME. The other producer was Anavilla Gam, sinamay producer from the Municipality of Sibagat.

Maynagcot is set to join DTI Agusan del Sur’s Trade Promotion Officer Corazon dela Pena for the Branding and Packaging Design Mentoring and Coaching of the Association of Accredited Advertising Agencies of the Philippines or 4As after her stint at the Manila FAME.

An SUV for millennials – Suzuki unveils the all-new Vitara

L

SUV’s original styling, the exterior design of the new Vitara exudes a strong yet sophisticated presence achieved through the modernized Suzuki SUV signature clamshell bonnet. The side press lines and smooth roofline suggest a youthful, rugged look, and strong aerodynamic performance, respectively, complemented by the rear that gives off a stable look.

The new Vitara has an overall width of 1,775mm, height of 1,610mm, length of 4,175mm and a minimum ground clearance of 185mm, making it the longest and widest in its class with the best turning radius performance.

Unique daytime running lamps with vertically placed LEDs are standard in the GLX model. Energysaving LED headlamps with a blue projector cover come standard with the GLX model, while Projector halogen headlamps featuring good light distribution for the low beam are used in the GL and GL+ models. It model’s 6-point airbag system comprising of dual, curtain and side airbags for the driver and passenger provides greater protection.

The Vitara also features cruise control system and speed limiter, ultrasonic sensors in the front and rear bumpers with reverse camera that detect obstacles during parking, an automatic light system that turns headlamps and tail lamps on and off, and automatic wipers triggered depending on the extent of rainfall and vehicle speed.

the engine torque and brakes upon detection of a wheelslip to ensure the driver maintains directional control. The hillhold control helps the driver to prevent the vehicle from rolling backward on an upward climb.

In the event of a collision, the new Vitara has an impact-absorbing design focused on the front bumpers. The brake pedal release system limits the pedal’s movement toward the driver in case of a frontal impact. For further protection for the occupants, the Vitara’s Total Effective Control Technology (TECT) absorbs impact and the seatbelts use force limiter to mitigate impact to the chest.

Boasting the lightest curb weight in its category, the new Vitara delivers enhanced fuel efficiency. The SUV’s updated 1.6-liter engine is designed to deliver the highest torque performance of 156Nm at 4,400rpm and best maximum output in its class at 115hp at

Displaced flood victims now living in decent new homes

LA PAZ, Agusan del Sur--- Some 44 families in Barangay Angeles who were displaced by the disastrous floods that hit the province in February this year now lives in decent new homes to a safer relocation area.

The recipients of new wooden shelters were recently moved to a new resettlement area thanks to the joint efforts of the Local Government Unit of La Paz (LGU La Paz), the Provincial Government of Agusan del Sur (PGAS), Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

Cop, infant killed in ambush in Bukidnon, police say

CAGAYAN de Oro City-An armed group believed to be members of the New People’s Army (NPA) waylaid a police vehicle resulting to the death of a police officer and four-month-old

child in a town in Bukidnon late Thursday afternoon, authorities said Friday.

Per report from the Phil. National Police-10 (PNP-10), the casualties were identified as a certain SPO3 Arnel Carillo, of the Bumbaran municipal police, and a still-unnamed

infant. Also wounded were three police officers and two civilians.

Those who sustained wounds were identified as Insp. Joven Acuesta, chief of the Bumbaran municipal police in Lanao del Sur, and his men, namely, SPO1 Pacifico Cabudoy, and PO1

Nathaniel Ibal.

The wounded civilians were Ali Citi, 53, female, who was hit on her left breast, and Ali Aminsalam, 37, who was wounded on her right arm.

The infant, who was hit on the forehead, was with the female civilians

Acuesta, SPO1 Pacifico Cabudoy, and PO1 Nathaniel Ibal.

Ali Citi and Ali Aminsalam, and several other civilians who were yet to be identified who were with Machorao on board a Toyota Fortuner, were also wounded.

According to reports, the Communist insurgents fired at the Bumbaran police patrol car and the Fortuner as they traversed the national highway in Barangay Tikalaan, Talakag town, Bukidnon.

The civilians were on their way to their residence

in Barangay Kili-kili, Wao, Lanao del Sur, while the police officers were en route to their office in Bumbaran.

In a statement it released to the media Friday night, the Phil. Army’s 4th Infantry Division (4ID) said the NPA has violated an international human rights law when it ambushed a civilian vehicle.

“These acts committed by the NPA bandits are clear violations of the Comprehensive Agreement on Respect for Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law or CARHRIHL between the government and the CPP-NPA-NDF as

this agreement prohibits attacks against civilians and non-combatants and bans the use of landmine,” the 4ID said.

In the same statement, Brig. Gen. Eric Vinoya, 4ID’s 403rd Infantry Brigade commander, called the ambush as a “barbaric act” and he lambasted the Communist fighters for “their lack of regard to human life, most especially the civilians” as evidenced by their indiscriminate use of firearms.

A few months earlier, COWD and Rio Verde agreed to res cind the 13-year-old contract between them as part of a deal with the Commission on Audit (COA) which filed a case against the water utility before the court.

But less than a month after the supposed dissolution of the contract, Rio Verde demanded a price increase of its water supply to COWD for the remainder of its doomed partnership.

In a related development, COWD chair Eduardo Montalvan also assured councilors that Cagayan de Oro Bulk Water, Inc. (COBI) will immediately take over all the bulk water supply operations left behind by Rio Verde as soon as the earlier contract dissolution takes effect.

This, even though COBI has yet to finalize a contract with COWD, Montalvan said.

COBI was the company created by the joint venture agreement signed by COWD and Metro Pacific Water last August.

At the time, COWD was scouting for another bulk supplier after its contract with Rio Verde got legally tangled, according to the utility’s general manager Rachel Beja.

COBI, which is 95 percent owned by Metro Pacific and five percent owned by COWD and has its own juridical entity, is still in the process of negotiating a contract with the utility.

Being a new company, COBI doesn’t have any fa-

#SaveSexy event raids Oro

HE revitalized Local AIDS Council in coordination with Save the Children Philippines is supporting the #SaveSexy event on November 18.

It is a project of The Red Whistle, a Manila-based youth oriented HIV awareness campaign that uses social media as its main platform, conducts interactive HIV 101 orientations and shares HIV information materials and condoms with the youth in different cities in the

country. A similar activity was held last year in this city.

The Local AIDS Council as mandated by City Ordinance 10022-2006 is the central advisory, planning and policy making body on the prevention and control of HIV/ AIDS in Cagayan de Oro City. It is chaired by Mayor Oscar Moreno.

Councilor Ma. Lourdes Gaane, chair of the committee on health, is the vice chair.

As proof of its resurgence, the Local AIDS Council has requested

an annual 2018 operating budget of P2.45 million which has been included in the mayor’s executive budget. With the support of the City Council under the stewardship of Vice Mayor Raineir Joaquin Uy, “we are confident that the Local AIDS Council would finally have the ways and means to make an impact on the city’s anti-AIDS campaign.”

“HIV/AIDS is the city’s top health concern. It is unfortunate that it predominantly affects our teens and young adults.

Worse, majority

of the infection is transmitted by men having sex with men. Thus, we have to engage and involve our youth in this undertaking towards ultimately stopping and preventing the spread of the dreaded disease,” Gaane said.

“We call on all Cagayanons, most especially the youth, to join us in the Local AIDS Council’s advocacy of eradicating the HIV/AIDS disease in our lifetime.

Supporting and patronizing this annual event would be a good start towards this goal,” she added. PR
