ZAMBOANGA City––A 3rd year student of the Ateneo de Zamboanga University has been reported missing and appeals for her safety have flooded social media, including Facebook. Reniel Belmonte, 19, was last seen in Ateneo de Zamboanga. She failed to return home and efforts to contact her were

futile. Her classmates and friends have put up various appeals on Facebook hoping to get some clues on where the teenager had gone. “We are looking for Ms. Reniel Jose R. WFD celebration centers on nurturing agricultural cooperatives “Empowered cooperatives equal to an empowered nation.” Such is the key message of Cooperative Development Authority - 10 (CDA-10) Director Orlando R. Ravanera in his talk during the World Food Day celebration of the Department of Agriculture (DA) 10 on October 16 and 17, 2012. This yearly observation intends to encourage attention to agricultural fo o d pro duc tion, encourage economic and technical cooperation, promote participation among rural women and cooperatives, and heighten public awareness on hunger problems around the world to provide enough food for everyone and to eliminate the incidence of poverty by enabling rural-based organizations (RBOs) and people’s organizations (POs) to play their vital role in community. In order to attain this, DA-10 Regional Technical Director Engr. Roxana H. Hojas urged everyone to partake in events such as the annual World Food Day celebration which capacitates many to promote the department’s programs and projects. As this year’s celebration bears the theme, “Agricultural Coopera-

tives: Key to Feeding the World,” DA has put the essence of such cooperatives into the spotlight. Accordingly, DA-assisted RBOs, POs and local government units (LGUs) have promoted and sold out every commodity displayed in their respective booths. Highlighted during the celebration is the awarding of the region’s 2011 Gawad Saka, winners namely: Emmanuel “Biboy” P. Patricio of Managok, Malaybalay City Outstanding Integrated Rice Farmer; Ernesto D. Leonar of Linabo, Malaybalay City - Outstanding Small Animal Raiser and Lower Balubal RIC of Balubal, Cagayan de Oro City - Outstanding Rural Improvement Club. Acenas, Saturday, urged parents, teachers, the youth and other sectors to take active part in the campaign against human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). During the observance of 24th World Aids Day at Kiosko Kagawasan, the vice mayor expressed alarm over reports of the Department of Health (DOH) that there are 88 cases of HIV in Northern Mindanao. The report indicates that 52 of these were noted in Misamis Oriental. “The city is taking actions in preventing HIVAIDS," he said even as he lauded the different sectors for participating in the program saying “this signifies support to pursue the campaign with the city government.”

The observance of World Aids Day was centered on the theme “Getting to Zero.” Earlier, the DOH in cooperation with the City Health Office and Misamis Oriental-Cagayan de Oro AIDS Network (Mocan), initiated a press conference last November 27 and a poster making contest, as part of the drive to increase awareness on sexuallytransmitted diseases, HIV and AIDS. Citing that HIV can be prevented, Acenas called on the young people to abstain from pre-marital sex and couples not to engage in sex outside marriage. To be recognized is one of the weaknesses of criminals. They are always afraid of possible witnesses. Always have a secret place in your body to secure your money or pieces of jewelries. Learn the art of ‘decoy.’ A wallet without cash and important documents, counterfeit jewelries like earring, chain, or necklace would suffice. CAGAYAN de Oro Mayor Vicente Emano will lead Thanksgiving mass at the City Tourism Office at 8 o’clock this morning after ‘zero casualty’ was attained at the height of Typhoon ‘Pablo’ Tuesday. Emano will lead the more than 4,000 city hall employees in a rare show of unity to thank the Supreme Creator for sparing Cagayan de Oro City and its people from the wrath of T-Pablo. Archbishop Antonio Ledesma is expected to lead the mass to remind City Hall that the zero casualty could not have been attained without the Divine intervention. The City Executive said without God’s blessings, the elaborate preparations adopted by the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council and other volunteer groups would not succeed. In an earlier statement, Emano said ‘he thanked the people and all those who have extended their assistance to the city government in the attainment of ‘zero casualty’ record at the height of Pablo’s fury last Tuesday.’ The city’s disaster risk reduction management council has mobilized some 200 volunteers coming from various departments of the city government. He said the police and the military along with medical workers rendered ‘beyond the call of duty’ described as the most successful disaster preparations the city ever organized.

PAGCOR to be probed over bribery raps By Omeng Maglangit THE Senate Committee on Games and Amusement said it would investigate allegations of bribery in the Entertainment City project of the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (Pagcor). The chairman of the said committee, Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III, said he took the move following news reports that Japanese billionaire Kazuo Okada’s Universal Entertainment had paid as much as $30 million to a former Pagcor consultant, Rodolfo Soriano, in 2010 allegedly to secure a license to operate a casino in the state-run firm’s Entertainment City project due to open next year. The news reports said that Soriano, who has close ties to key members of the administration of former President and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, received the payments as Universal was lobbying for tax and other government concessions to boost the profitability of a $2-billion casino it was developing in Pagcor’s Entertainment City project

in Manila Bay. “This is a serious allegation that merits a fullblown investigation by the Senate,” Pimentel said. “Pagcor’s Entertainment City is a big-ticket project of the national government aimed at drawing more tourists to the country. It should not be tainted at all by any hint of impropriety or wrongdoing,” the senator pointed out. He added, “We have to salvage the reputation of this big project as well as of the innocent locators therein.” Pimentel said his committee would issue summons to Soriano and other former and current Pagcor officials to shed light on the matter. “The investigation is a matter of national importance as we need to plug loopholes in the law that allow under-the-table deals to take place,” Pimentel said. “Even as the alleged bribery took place during the previous administration, we need to find out the truth as the Aquino administration is determined to adhere to the daang matuwid or the straight path,” he added.

Rep. JV Ejercito urged the Telecommunication firms to comply with the order of the NTC to refund the cellphone subscribers and be sensitive to the welfare of the Filipinos since almost everyone in the country uses these services.

NTC sanctions on telecom firms for overcharging lauded SAN Juan Rep. JV Ejercito Estrada commended the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) for keeping with its mandate of protecting the welfare of the public against the telecommunications companies (telcos) that it found to have been overcharging their subscribers. Ejercito Estrada lauded the NTC for penalizing cellphone network giants found by the NTC of not following its order to lower inter-connection charges by P0.20 for every text message or short messaging service (SMS) since last year. The young legislator

said the NTC, headed by Director Edgardo Cabarios, deserves a commendation for performing its function of monitoring the inadequacy of the big telcos in the country. The NTC issued an order to the telcos to refund subscribers the 20-centavo cut in SMS rates supposed to have been implemented since December 1, 2011. The NTC directed the telcos to devise a plan on how to refund its subscribers. The San Juan representative also urged the telcos to already comply with the order of the NTC to refund

the cellphone subscribers and be sensitive to the welfare of the Filipinos since almost everyone in the country uses these services. Ejercito Estrada appealed to telcos to let the refund be their Christmas gift to the subscribers. The NTC said telcos are currently charging P1 per SMS message when they should have been collecting only P0.80 per text message. The refund order stems from the NTC’s Memorandum Circular No. 0210-2011 issued in October 2011 lowering the interconnection charges to P0.15 per SMS from the original

P0.35. This, in turn, should bring down the regular cost of text messages to P0.80 apiece from P1. The telcos were given until the end of November that same year to implement the reduction in rates. Since not one among the three firms has implemented the prescribed rate, the regulator is now ordering the refund to be paid to consumers. Ejercito Estrada said the NTC should be lauded for upholding its mandate of keeping the interest of public for affordable rates more than anything else. Before our departure to Germany, I took the effort of consulting with Dr. Michelle de Vera of the Regenerative Medicine Division of the Medical City in Ortigas. Their procedure there entails extraction of the stem cells from the bone marrow of the patient himself, (not from a fetus of a sheep as in Villa Medica) subjecting them to laboratory procedures and injecting the stem cells back to the patient for the next six (6) months for curative effect. On page 136 of the ‘BOMBSHELL,” Ms. Suzanne inter viewed Dr. Jonathan Wright, M.D., a pioneering American doctor who is the “Father” of Bioidentical Hormone Treatment, “being the first doctor in America to prescribe hormones as replacement therapy as early as 25 years ago” He said cells in the body can actually be rejuvenated to “restart themselves again”. This is reversing aging at its best, Ms. Suzanne wrote, with organs and glands rejuvenated to youthful levels using “nature’s tools”. O n ste m c el ls , D r. Wright said: “... In the late 1920s, a professor named Paul Niehans of Switzerland started using stem cells from fetal animals to strengthen the parts of the human body that were weak or diseased, for instance, “heart cells” to strengthen the heart; “kidney cells” to treat kidneys. AGING GRACEFULLY --- What is so interesting in the book “BOMBSHELL” is simply the fact that the author reminds us that what makes aging either painful and / or graceful is a combination of the food we eat, our diet, our lifestyle, our stress, our health supplements, our environment etc. We all heard the stories of some Japanese who lived in the high mountains of Yokohama, Japan who were alive in their early hundreds without disease. What were they doing, Ms. Suzanne asked. Why the long life? In our neighborhoods, do we always see our old folks painfully walking to church, some unsteady evidently with arthritis or knee or back pains? Or close relatives and friends suffering with ailments as they count their remaining days? For those who own cars, you immediately fix it when a squeak is heard or a small part gets broken. We don’t use inferior fuel; we tune it up, change oil, and fix it everytime. Are we doing the same with our body? But what do we do with our body? Do we keep eating all those “processed food, refined and chemically sprayed food”? Or stuffing our bodies with excessive al-

cohol or smoking? Or even before the usual retirement age, do you have to resort to Viagra to get your normal sex drive going? Interesting topics to discuss. Perhaps I should get more information on this next time.
