Problem of illegal drugs in PHL poses threat to nat’l security The Philippine illegal drugs trade is now a PHP120-billion industry supplying over four million users.

The country’s anti-drug agency said some PHP14.49 billion worth of illegal drugs have already been seized, or 12 percent of estimated supply, in the government’s anti-illegal drugs campaign since President Rodrigo Duterte assumed office last June 30.

“The drug problem of the country is massive and now poses a threat to the national security. Status quo is not acceptable, we need to do something now,” said Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) director general Isidro Lapeña.

Lapeña stressed that illegal drug users must be treated from addiction to reduce the demand for drugs, and eventually stop this problem in the country.

Callamard conclusion on PHL drug war ‘arbitrary and unilateral’ – Sen. Lacson Sen. Panfilo Lacson on Sunday said the recent statement of United Nations Special Rapporteur Agnes Callamard about the war on drugs being ineffective is “high-handed.”

Reds face 19 charges for CARHRIHL violations

DAVAO CITY -- The Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) and its armed wing, the New People’s Army (NPA), were slapped with 19 charges for alleged violations of the Comprehensive Agreement on Respect for Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law (CARHRIHL).

Capt. Rhyan Batchar, 10th Infantry Division spokesperson, said Monday they filed the complaints before the Secretariat of the Joint Monitoring Committee (JMC).

Teaching Mathematics in the 21st Century

The system of teaching Mathematics has been reliant on the simple provision of equations, formulas, and solutions handed down by the teacher to the students.

This has always been the trend ever since Math was introduced in the education system. But this system has now been deemed flawed and hardly effective since it simply narrows down

Mathematics into a set of skills and formulas and only those who have a strong grasp of the process will succeed in learning.

So how is the teaching of Mathematics better now, or yet, changing?

Nowadays, other than teaching and providing students the necessary skills and formulas to understand the different concepts in

Mathematics, students are also taught how manipulating numbers and formulas work in context.

This means that there are many ways to apply a certain formula or that there are certain ways to manipulate numbers in a real life scenario to solve a problem.

Mathematics is now being taught not just for simply solving problems in the books and by the books

but also as a skill that goes beyond the traditional expectations. Teachers of Math are now highly encouraged to support their students to become more flexible thinkers about numbers and the craft. With this view mathematics teachers are challenge to upgrade their teaching strategies geared toward competency base and evidence base practices addressing the millennial or the 21first century learners.

DAVAO CITY – Local halal industry players urged Thursday the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to fast track the completion of the implementing rules and regulations (IRR) for Republic Act 10817 or the Halal Export Development and Promotional Act. Malou Ampuan, of the Mindanao Islamic Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MICCI), said the IRR is a vital component in making Philippine halal products competitive in ASEAN and BIMP-EAGA markets.

ASEAN stands for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations while BIMPEAGA for the Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines - East ASEAN Growth Area.

“DTI must finish the drafting and finalization of the IRR. This is important to the halal industry in the country,” Ampuan said.

RA 10817 was signed into law by former President Benigno S. Aquino in May last year.

The IRR, she added, will set the National Certification Scheme and Standard

for halal products in the country.

She said the global halal market is now valued at US$ 2.6 trillion.

With the absence of the IRR, Ampuan said five groups are currently recognized in the Philippines to certify halal products.

“This is only recognition.

With the IRR, the standards that will certify our halal products will officially be set,” she said.

The five recognized groups include the Islamic Dawa Council of the Philippines (IDCP), the Halal Development Institute of the Philippines (HDIP), Mindanao Halal Authority (MINHA), Muslim Mindanao Halal Certification Board (MMHCB), and the Halal International Chamber of Commerce (HICCP).

RA 10817 names the DTI secretary to head the Halal Export Development and Promotional Board (EDPB), which is tasked to oversee the halal development and promotion programs in the country.
