War on drugs to bring more investments to Davao -- NEDA Pres. Duterte assures ARMM policemen of full gov’t support
PARANG, Maguindanao – President Rodrigo Duterte assured police officers in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) the government will take care of them or their families if they are injured or killed while in the line of duty. Duterte issued the assurance in a brief speech that lasted only for four minutes. The President apologized to the police officers who waited for him for hours. “Your children will be assured of education, your spouses will be given employment, that is automatic,” Duterte said. “That is the least I can do for you for doing your duties to your country.” “By the time I leave the presidency, I would have invested so many billions for the trust fund for law enforcement personnel,” he added. “I have nothing but (wants the) best for the police,” he said, adding that he also wants the police to be fully equipped in fighting terrorists in Mindanao. DAVAO CITY -- The National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) sees President Rodrigo Duterte’s war on illegal drugs as a significant step towards achieving further economic progress in the region. NEDA-XI director Ma. Lourdes Lim said addressing the menace would result to a “safe and secure environment for businesses,” therefore attracting more investors to Davao. Lim added that there are already a number of rehabilitation centers put up in the Davao region to help those who needed reformation. “The drug menace is DAVAO FLOOD. The Davao City government has been leading a drugs war since the late 80s following a high profile rape case involving drug addicts. There was no let-up in the campaign waged by then mayor and now President Rodrigo Duterte, who sees to it that people can safely go home without being harassed. In an interview Friday, Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio said the campaign against illegal drugs is one of the top priorities of the city government. Pres. Duterte’s anti-poverty efforts cuts involuntary hunger incidence The drop in the number of families experiencing involuntary hunger in the first three months of 2017 validates President Rodrigo Duterte’s efforts to alleviate poverty in the country, Malacañang said. Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella noted that the Social Weather Survey showed a 2 per-
cent drop in the number of families experiencing involuntary hunger during the first quarter of the year. The March poll showed that 11.9 percent or an estimated 2.7 million households missed a meal at least once in the past quarter. The figure is 2 percentage points below the 13.9 percent or 3.1 million families
logged in the December poll. “This latest finding, conducted last March 25-28, affirms the positive impact of the Duterte administration’s poverty alleviation efforts on the lowest rung of society,” Abella said. The Palace official cited some of the government’s immediate pro-poor and in-
clusive efforts that contributed to the drop in hunger incidence. These include social protection to the poor, the marginalized and the neglected sectors such as conditional cash transfer to the poorest of the poor, higher pension for seniors, free medicine for indigents, added incentive and com-
bat duty pay for police and soldiers, gratuity pay to job order and contract workers in the government and regularization of tens of thousands of employees in the private sector. Abella stressed that the Duterte administration hopes to further reduce poverty incidence through a series of long-term anti-
poverty programs being instituted by the government. “The government’s longterm goal, however, is to improve the lives of Filipinos across sectors, through effective delivery of goods and services, like increased spending in infrastructure projects and the promotion See efforts, page A7
