‘Sarah’ orders a security clampdown in Davao City DAVAO CITY– The military and police threw a security dragnet around Davao City as Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio ordered the law enforcers to craft a “holistic plan” to ensure the security and safety of the people in the city.

Duterte issued the directive a day after the authorities foiled a bomb plot by alleged members of the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG).

On Tuesday, the Davao City Police Office (DCPO) tracked down a suspected terrorist. The suspect was killed in a shootout with the police operatives along Magtuod road in Maa, this city.

The suspect was identified as alias “Bin Ladin.” Two of his companions,identified only as “Saqdat” and “Omar” have escaped the police dragnet.

Mindanao gets P10M community projects from hydro firm STA. CRUZ, Davao del Sur -- With a budget allotment of P10 million for this year, some Higaonons in the Province of Bukidnon, Bagobo-Tagabawas in Davao del Sur and beneficiaries in Davao City will welcome another long list of community projects focused on education, environment, health and, enterprise development after Hedcor, a hydropower firm of AboitizPower, announced its continuous drive to advance its host communities.

Providing the young people a conducive place for learning and the opportunity to contribute in building A Better Future, the company’s biggest investment this year goes to education.

This includes scholarships, construction of classrooms, computer and internet installation, feeding program for public elementary pupils, providing schools with electricity, and school supplies donation.

For projects focused on the environment, enterprise development, and health, Hedcor’s host communities will benefit from medical and dental missions, wildlife and biodiversity protection, school-based hygiene and solid waste management promotion, emergency preparedness and first aid training, and local cooperative supports.

The Department of Agriculture (DA) XI has designated two directors for farmers and fisherfolk in the Davao region as part of the celebration of farmers’ and fisherfolk month.

Acting DA-XI director Engr. Ricardo Oñate, Jr. designated Engr. Armando Angsinco as director for farmers while Randy Briones for the fisherfolk.

Angsinco vowed to strengthen the role of Agriculture and Fisheries Councils (AFC) in the various municipalities and provinces.

“Strengthening the AFCs will help in the progress of agriculture and fisheries sector in their respective communities. We will see to it that DA interventions will reach far-flung areas

so they will be able to feel the presence of the government,” Angsinco said.

On the other hand, Briones assured that he will conduct activities that will highlight the conservation, protection, and sustainable management of coastal areas in Region XI. Oñate asked the new “directors” to help the farmers and fisherfolk in improving

their livelihood.

For this farmer and fisherfolk month celebration, Oñate urged officials from DA and its attached agencies to continue paying tribute to the country’s farmers and fisherfolk, and at the same time provide them assistance in order to attain food sufficiency and security in the country.

DAVAO ORIENTAL – After decades of enduring roads in terrible state, residents of the far-flung villages of Binondo and Batawan in Baganga town are now experiencing respite as they benefit on the newly turned-over concrete roads that are opening up many economic opportunities for locals here.

On Tuesday, April 26, three road projects were officially turned over. These are the P70.1 million con-

creting of the 4.2-kilometer road from Barangay Proper to Sitio Mantapay in Binondo; P93.4 million Opening, Construction, and Rehabilitation of the 10-kilometer Baganga – Binondo Boundary Davao Oriental to Compostela Valley; and P139 million concreting of 7.6-kilometer road from Batawan Proper, Barangay Batawan -- Nursery in Barangay Binondo.

These roads are poised to generate local employ-

ment, deliver basic needs of the community and help in poverty alleviation by easingtransport of agricultural products and quick delivery of services.

Batawan Punong Barangay Chair Dionesio Bandayanan said the newly concreted and rehabilitated roads are anticipated to benefit thousands of residents here who are mostly farmers.

Danny Boy Curitao; Living his dream DAVAO CITY- In usual cases, getting a sunburn would mean spending a lot time frolicking at the beach, but for Danny Boy Curitao, he got his sunburn while staying at his room.

The hot sun rays pierced down on the rusty corrugated sheets of the family’s ramshackle home. There was no ceiling to protect him from the heat of the roof, he got sunburnt.

“Our house was really pitiful, we had amakan (bamboo ply) for our walling. The roof was also leaking, we were exposed to the elements. “ he describes the house near the port of Sasa.

Danny Boy was working as a designer for a printing press, they paid him in minimum wage, at that time Php 270.00. He was earning less than five thousand pesos a month.

“I would be happy if there was five-peso increase in our salaries.”

With his ten peso, he went to the internet café and retrieved his old onlinejobs account and became active again searching for prospective clients.

A graphics designer knowledgeable in Adobe Photoshop, In Design and Illustrator he met foreign clients who got him for their design projects.

One of these clients offered him P10,000 to work full-time for a Singaporean company. He resigned from his work as a graphics designer for a printing press.

DOLE boosts employment facilitation Ten months into the administration, Labor Secretary Silvestre H. Bello III said that the labor department has steadily boosted its campaign to address the problem of unemployment and underemployment in the country.

Bello said employment facilitation services to the public consisted of job fairs; labor market information (LMI) dissemination; the online job portal PhilJobNet; and the youth employment programs such as the Special Program for Employment of Students (SPES), the Government Internship Program (GIP), and the JobStart Philippines Program.

IT’s rare to find a female motorcycle racer in the country.

It’s rarer to find one who is still 19 and who looks like your regular tweetum college student. Yet that’s exactly who Syndy Domingo is.

Syndy may not be as voluptuous as her namesake Kim Domingo yet she is definitely the most adored in her league. Every circuit where she races, Syndy is showered upon with verbal accolades, egging her to level up more, honing both her confidence and the much-needed talent in this men’s world. For motorcycle circuit racing is not genderbiased. It is gender-mixed.

Thus, women are allowed to compete alongside men.

Surprisingly, Syndy pulled off some awards. Like the fourth spot she clinched in the 3R Motor Circuit Competition which was held in Iligan City in September 11, 2016. That provided an avenue of hope that women circuit racers can still out-

shine the strongest and the most cunning of motorcyclists in the track.

Yet Syndy still looks more of a girl than a woman. In this interview, Syndy recalled the first time she wanted to race.

It was during her sixth grade vacation in her hometown in Libona, Bukidnon that she admired her cousin Virgilio crisscrossing the family farm towards downtown and back.

At the meagre age of 13, Syndy asked her cousin to try the motorcycle by herself.

And she instantly fell in love with the two-stroke KMX motorcycle. Virgilio, who has racer-friends in town,

last October 3, 2012 when she joined the Araw ng Libona Flat Track. She was not among the top placers yet that activity cemented her passion to hone her desire more.

Fast forward to 2017, Syndy will be the lone representative from Cagayan de Oro who will join the

prestigious 2017 UBK/PSR Circuit Racing to be held this June 8 to 9 at Clark International Speedway in Pampanga.

Aside from being the pride of Northern Mindanao, Syndy is also the pride among all women here. Support her we must! And to Syndy, the best of luck!

House panel OKs comprehensive tax reform bill

The House ways and means committee on Wednesday approved the comprehensive tax reform package, which seeks to lower personal income tax (PIT) rates while raising excise taxes on certain commodities.

Members of the House panel approved the unnumbered substitute bill with 17 votes on the affirmative, 4 negative, and 3 abstentions.

This after the technical working group submitted the draft of the bill to the

Under the bill, workers earning no more than PHP250,000 annually will be exempted from paying personal income taxes (PIT).

After nine years of homebased online work, Danny Boy earns more than a hundred thousand pesos a month. A few blocks from his parents home, he built a comfortable home for his family, where in its comforts he could watch his three kids play at the same time do his workload- without getting sunburnt.

Among his investments is a three-storey building also near their home and a printing press which he says is their insurance just in case the outsourcing work would no longer be there.

“Filipinos are really talented and creative, Filipino graphic designers are very in demand.” Danny Boy says.

However Filipinos aren’t prone to risking their present livelihood no matter how small it pays for a future that sounds uncertain to them.

“That is why they are stuck with low-paying jobs.”

Danny says of his fellow designers’ predicament.

For those willing to try it out, he helps them by training these designers particularly in dealing with their foreign clients.

He says all are living better lives than what they had before, thanks to onlinejobs. ph “Some of them earns more than me, they were able to buy cars.” Danny

says.

Danny doesn’t have a car but not for long, hours after the interview he has an appointment with a car dealer where he would be purchasing a pick-up that would be used for his wife’s buy-and-sell business.

According to data from ICT Davao, an umbrella group of IT groups in Davao City, figures from 2010 to 2014 cited that home-based workers in Davao City earned about P124-million.

Davao City and Davao del Sur host the 4.4-MW Talomo hydros and 56.1MW Sibulan-Tudaya hydros, respectively. Bukidnon will soon enjoy the 68.8-MW Manolo Fortich hydros by the end of this year.
